Mapping And Analyzing The Spatial Distribution Of Thetribe Triticeae Dumort. (Poaceae) In Turkey, Hakan Mete Doğan, Evren Cabi̇, Musa Doğan
Turkish Journal of Botany
Triticeae Dumort. (Poaceae), or true grasses, the fifth-largest plant family in the world, are of great importance in terms of human life and civilization. Therefore, understanding the spatial distribution of the family members is important for botanists, plant producers, and breeders. Turkey is one of two gene centers of this family. In this study, the spatial distribution of Triticeae in Turkey was mapped in geographic information systems (GIS) by utilizing a large number of specimens collected from 1006 georeferenced sampling sites between 2004 and 2010. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was carried out in order to understand the spatial distribution of …

Analyzing Songs Used For Lyric Analysis With Mental Health Consumers Using Linguistic Inquiry And Word Count (Liwc) Software, Ashley M. Miller
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Lyric analysis is one of the most commonly used music therapy interventions with the mental health population, yet there is a gap in the research literature regarding song selection. The primary purpose of this study was to determine distinguishing linguistic characteristics of song lyrics most commonly used for lyric analysis with mental health consumers, as measured by LIWC2015 software. A secondary purpose was to provide an updated song list resource for music therapists and music therapy students working with the mental health population. The researcher emailed a survey to 6,757 board-certified music therapists, 316 of whom completed the survey. Respondents …
Why We Sing Along: Measurable Traits Of Successful Congregational Songs, Daniel Read
Why We Sing Along: Measurable Traits Of Successful Congregational Songs, Daniel Read
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Songwriters have been creating music for the church for hundreds of years. The songs have gone through many stylistic changes from generation to generation, yet, each song has generated congregational participation. What measurable, traceable qualities of congregational songs exist from one generation to the next?
This document explores the history and development of Congregational Christian Song (CCS), to discover and document the similarities between seemingly contrasting styles of music. The songs analyzed in this study were chosen because of their wide popularity and broad dissemination among non-denominational churches in the United States. While not an exhaustive study, this paper reviews …
An Ecojustice Analysis Of Nursing Education, Kristi Jo Wilson
An Ecojustice Analysis Of Nursing Education, Kristi Jo Wilson
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The concept health is constructed within socioeconomic, political, cultural, and ecological contexts that affect how personnel in the medical and nursing fields practice. The idea of health and its associated practices in Western countries has arisen from modernist discourses such as mechanism and rationalism, which further support a capitalist economic system that stresses efficiency, specialization, and volume for profit. In Western industrial cultures in particular, health is primarily driven by consumerism and market forces and is generally defined within two categories: wellness and illness.
To explore this concept further, I interviewed seven nurse scholars who see health in a different …

Patients with cancer are emotionally affected during their cancer treatment course. Sometimes, patient’s psychological issues are overlooked during the actual disease treatment. Cancer patients are at a higher risk of developing anxiety and depression (A&D). A presumptive diagnosis of anxiety and depression was assessed based on a useful tool, the 14 item Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Patient responses were assessed for the prevalence of anxiety and depression. In all, 102 patients were studied using the questionnaires of HADS. The demographic and clinical details were collected from patients. Breast cancer patients had the highest prevalence of anxiety (31.6%) and …
Exploring The Political Impact Of Literature And Literary Studies In American Government, Taylor Dereadt
Exploring The Political Impact Of Literature And Literary Studies In American Government, Taylor Dereadt
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis explores the role of literature and practices of literary study in American government. Specifically, it looks at how the President’s Council on Bioethics (PCBE) and the Supreme Court have deliberately embraced the humanities to fulfill their respective responsibilities. I begin by examining the interpretive practices these groups employ, then turn to lists of recommended reading published by the PCBE and Justice Anthony Kennedy. I investigate how their endorsements of texts such as Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, My Antonia, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and To Kill a Mockingbird promote certain constructions of traditional American values that …

An Examination Of Attribute Trade And Weight Stigma In Online Dating, Rachel Sienko
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Weight stigma refers to biased treatment or attitudes based on weight. This has been documented to occur in a variety of settings (including relationships) and can result in many negative consequences, but its impact in the contemporary online dating arena is largely unexplored. Therefore, Study 1 of this project examined who experiences weight stigma in online dating and what factors predicted weight stigma. It was hypothesized that a) women would be more likely than men to experience weight stigma; b) compassion, beliefs about obese persons, attitudes toward obese persons, social dominance orientation, narcissism, objectification, self-classification of overweight status, and internalized …

Students’ Understanding About Clinical Research And Their Willingness To Participate In Clinical Trials, Divya Pandiri
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Drug development is a tedious process involving a huge amount of time and money. Clinical trials are the important part of the drug development process. In clinical trials, subject recruitment is challenging especially when recruiting the Generation Y (millennial) population group. This might be generational or due to few barriers. In the present research, in-class surveys were done in the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University to determine whether an educational intervention impacts the willingness of Generation Y to participate in clinical research. This interventional group (active group or exposure group) …
Trust: A Model For Disclosure In Patent Law, Ari Ezra Waldman
Trust: A Model For Disclosure In Patent Law, Ari Ezra Waldman
Articles & Chapters
How to draw the line between public and private is a foundational, first-principles question of privacy law, but the answer has implications for intellectual property, as well. This project is the first in a series of papers about first-person disclosures of information in the privacy and intellectual property law contexts, and it defines the boundary between public and non-public information through the lens of social science — namely, principles of trust.
Patent law’s “public use” bar confronts the question of whether legal protection should extend to information previously disclosed to a small group of people. I present evidence that shows …

Patent Protection For Microbial Technologies, Jacob S. Sherkow
Patent Protection For Microbial Technologies, Jacob S. Sherkow
Articles & Chapters
Microbial technologies often serve as the basis of fundamental research tools in molecular biology. These present a variety of ethical, legal and social issues concerning their patenting. This commentary presents several case studies of these issues across three major microbiological tools: CRISPR, viral vectors and antimicrobial resistance drugs. It concludes that the development of these technologies—both scienti cally and commercially—depend, in part, on the patent regime available for each, and researchers’ willingness to enforce those patents against others.

The Impact Of Racial Stereotyping On Juror Perception Of Criminal Offenders, Tameka T. Price
The Impact Of Racial Stereotyping On Juror Perception Of Criminal Offenders, Tameka T. Price
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
For decades, research has consistently demonstrated that minorities are overrepresented in the prison population, yet relatively little is known about whether juror perceptions about race and criminal culpability may impact this problem in the United States. Using Hill's folk theory of race and racism as the theoretical foundation, this cross sectional study examined the relationship between perceptions of the race of the defendant and the verdicts to be handed down. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 25 people who self-reported having served on a jury or were eligible for jury service within the past 5 years in a …

Effects Of The Walters Criminal Lifestyle Program On Offenders' Criminal Thinking Styles, Alessandre Singher Singher
Effects Of The Walters Criminal Lifestyle Program On Offenders' Criminal Thinking Styles, Alessandre Singher Singher
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have documented the high prevalence of crime in society and the need for programs to assist in the reduction of crime. Social cognitive and criminal lifestyle theories were the two major theoretical frameworks applied to this study due to their focus on the influence of cognitive change on behavioral modifications. A lifestyle approach in such programs reshapes criminal thoughts and transforms criminal behaviors. The efficacy of a lifestyle program in a community correctional facility outside of federal prison walls, modified to run 3 months with parolees and probationers, lacks evidenced research. Using a 2x3 between groups factorial ANCOVA, archival …
Investigating The Incidence Of Postoperative Mild Cognitive Impairment In Cognitively Intact Patients Aged 65-80 Years Undergoing General Anesthesia For Surgery, Bryon Ward
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The purpose of this prospective, descriptive pilot study is to establish a baseline measure for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in patients aged 65-80 years following elective surgery with general anesthesia (GA). Older adults scheduled for elective surgery routinely undergo GA with a combination of volatile and intravenous anesthetic agents. Current literature shows that patients aged 65-80 who receive GA agents are at increased risk for MCI postoperatively. Data also suggests that further studies are necessary in order to more completely evaluate alternative anesthesia techniques and agents that may prove to reduce the risk and incidence of MCI associated with anesthesia …

Captive: Zoometric Operations In Gaza, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
“We are the only people in this world who are living under such total occupation. Israel sees us as being equal to our animals, and sometimes they even value us less than our animals.” This quote, from the founder of the Gaza Zoo, demonstrates both the significance and the complexities of human-animal relations in Gaza, especially at times of siege and war. My article draws on ethnographic encounters and investigative analysis to relay how Gaza’s spatial confinement generally, and the Israeli incursion into Gaza of summer 2014 in particular, has lent itself to a radicalized discursive interplay between the animalization …

Analysis Of Sideline Concussion Screening Tools In An Athletic Setting, Steven Young
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This paper serves as a primer to healthcare professionals of the now and future of sideline screening for concussion. In the past decade, significant research into sports-related concussions has expanded understanding of what is as a very complex injury. As the definition of concussion has evolved, the impact they have is put into perspective. As more research into the short- and long-term effects of concussions brings to light the effects of continuing to participate after suffering a concussion, the importance of keeping concussed athletes off the field is now understood as a potential life or death situation. With the dangers …
