A Phenomenological Study Of Lesbian And Gay People In Leadership Roles: How Perspectives And Priorities Shift In The Workplace As Sexual Orientation Evolves Through Social Constructs, Justin Moore
Doctoral Dissertations
The queer community's presence continues to increase in the United States, while more individuals become visible throughout workplaces. An increasingly diverse workforce leaves organizations struggling to leverage the knowledge and experience lesbian and gay leaders bring to discussions. Limited research informs organizations of the strategies lesbian and gay people in leadership roles use to navigate their ascension into their positions, while managing the disclosure of their sexual orientation and professional identity. This qualitative, phenomenological study involved recruiting 15 participants through purposeful, homogeneous sampling processes and snowball sampling, identifying cisgender lesbian or gay people in leadership or managerial roles, with a …

Identification And Characterization Of Dioctyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate (Doss) As An Obesogen And Metabolic Disruptor, Alexis M. Temkin
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The National obesity epidemic has reached a point where 36.5% of the adults are obese. While diet, exercise and genetics are major factors driving obesity, recent studies also implicate environmental chemical agents known as ‘Obesogens’. Research efforts have begun to identify obesogens, which promote obesity and metabolic syndrome and are especially potent during fetal and childhood development. The research presented herein provides a logical framework for the identification, characterization and validation of obesogens in environmental samples. This framework was developed based on potential obesogens present in crude oil (MC252 oil) and dispersant (Corexit) from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill given …
Genome-Scale Crispr-Cas9 Knockout Screen Identifies Huwe1 As A Modifier Of Egfr Dependence In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells, Jon Dimaina
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutations can exhibit a strong dependence on mutant EGFR signaling for growth and survival. They are also sensitive to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), which provide superior clinical benefits to conventional chemotherapy. However, despite initial response, most patients experience relapse with resistant tumors within a year. This study aims to identify modifiers of dependence on mutant EGFR signaling and the mechanisms by which they do so in order to improve therapeutic strategies and outcomes. A genome-scale CRISPR-Cas9 genetic knockout screen was conducted to identify genes whose loss-of-function confer …

A Systematic Review Of The Treatment And Management Of Pre-Eclampsia And Eclampsia In Bangladesh, Karen Kirk, Amy Dempsey
Reproductive Health
By 2015, at the conclusion of the Millennium Development Goals, Bangladesh had achieved a reduction in maternal deaths, however, despite the progress, there are still between 5,000 and 6,000 maternal deaths every year, with 20 percent the result of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E). To fully understand the key challenges, gaps, and interventions related to the prevention and treatment of PE/E at the national level, Ending Eclampsia conducted a systematic review of papers in Bangladesh published between 2000 and 2015 specifically looking at issues around the quality of care, gaps in the evidence, and barriers to accessing PE/E services. The main …

Results From Systematic Literature Review On Pe/E In Nigeria, Amy Dempsey, Karen Kirk
Reproductive Health
Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, are consistently cited as a leading cause of maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality in Nigeria. A recent, nationwide cross-sectional survey found that PE/E contributes to 28.2 percent of national maternal deaths. The other main contributors to maternal mortality are hemorrhage and pregnancy-related infection or sepsis. To fully understand the key challenges, gaps, and interventions related to the prevention and treatment of PE/E, the Ending Eclampsia project conducted a systematic review of papers on PE/E in Nigeria published between 2000–15. The methods, results, and recommendations are discussed in this brief.

Carbon Nanofiber Modified With Osmium Based Redox Polymer For Glucose Sensing, Amos Mugweru, Reaz Mahmud, Kartik Ghosh, Adam Wanekaya
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Electrochemical detection of glucose was performed on carbon nanofibers containing an osmium based redox polymer and using glucose oxidase enzyme. Redox polymer assembled on the nanofibers provided a more stable support that preserved enzyme activity and promoted the electrical communication to the glassy carbon electrode. The morphologies, structures, and electrochemical behavior of the redox polymer modified nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer and voltammetry. The glucose oxidase showed excellent communication with redox polymer as observed with the increased activity toward glucose. Both cyclic voltammetry and amperometry showed a linear response with glucose concentration. The linear range …

Influence Of Cntrene ® C100lm Carbon Nanotube Material On The Growth And Regulation Of Escherichia Coli, Brittany Twibell, Kalie Somerville, Geoffrey Manani, Molly Duszynski, Adam Wanekaya, Paul Schweiger
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
The growing use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in industrial and consumer products raises important questions about their environmental fate and impact on prokaryotes. In the environment, CNTs are exposed to a variety of conditions (e.g., UV light) that could lead to decomposition and changes in their chemical properties. Therefore, the potential cytotoxic effect of both pristine and artificially aged carboxyl functionalized CNTRENE R C100LMCNTmaterial at neutral and acidic conditions on Escherichia coli K12 was analyzed using a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay, which also allowed monitoring of non-lethal growth effects. However, there were no observable MIC or significant changes in …

Highly Selective Schiff Base Derivatives For Colorimetric Detection Of Al$^{3+}$, Zi̇ya Aydin, Mustafa Keleş
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Schiff base derivatives NBAR and NSAR were developed for selective detection of Al$^{3+}$ in aqueous solution. UV-vis spectroscopic studies revealed that NBAR and NSAR showed marked sensitivity and selectivity to Al$^{3+}$ in acetonitrile (ACN)/water (v/v, 1:1, pH 6.80). The NBAR and NSAR receptors bound Al$^{3+}$ in a 2:1 stoichiometry with apparent binding constants 4.09 $\times $ 10$^{11}$ M$^{-2}$ and 1.65 $\times $ 10$^{12}$ M$^{-2}$, respectively. They also displayed distinct changes in color upon the alteration of free Al$^{3+}$ levels in solution with reversible responses and showed little interference with other metal ions.

Geology Of The Nelson Limestone, Postel Nunatak, Patuxent Range, Antarctica, Kevin Ray Evans, Lawrence W. Mckenna, Bruce S. Lieberman, Wesley Donald Weichert, Kenneth G. Macleod
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Postel Nunatak in the Patuxent Range has been previously mapped as Nelson Limestone but there was no biostratigraphic support for that interpretation until now. We confirm that limestone exposures at Postel Nunatak are at least partly correlated with the Nelson Limestone of the Neptune Range, 160 km north-east, and are not correlative with the lower Cambrian Schneider Hills Limestone of the Argentina Range. Upper beds have yielded the trilobites Suludella? davnii Palmer & Gatehouse, 1972 and Solenopleura pruina Palmer & Gatehouse, 1972, which provide a basis for assignment to Cambrian Series 3 (late middle Cambrian), within the Drumian or lower …

Superficialy [Sic] And Maturity Within J. D. Salinger's The Catcher In The Rye And Mark Twain's The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn, Louise Caroline Barbosa
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The purpose of this research is to analyze the concept of maturity between postcolonialism and modem literature through a close reading of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. Both Huck and Finn reside in a world where growing older means accepting the often fake societies and communities that regulate societal norms. Both characters face mature themes, such as death/mortality/ isolation, the hypocrisy of"civilized" society, and depression. In evaluating these texts, it is reasonable to believe that Holden and Huck will forever be displaced in society because of their repression …

Good Vibrations: A Novel Method For Sexing Turtles, Donald T. Mcknight, Hunter J. Howell, Ethan C. Hollender, Day B. Ligon
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
The ability to accurately determine the sex of individuals is important for research and conservation efforts. While most species of turtle exhibit secondary sexual dimorphisms that can be used to reliably infer sex, there are some species that are very difficult to sex, and even within many dimorphic species, it is not uncommon to encounter individuals that appear to exhibit both male and female secondary sex characteristics. Therefore, we tested the novel method of using a vibrator to sex turtles by stimulating male turtles to evert their penises. We tested this method on males of four species (three families) with …
Correcting For Unequal Catchability In Sex Ratio And Population Size Estimates, Donald T. Mcknight, Day B. Ligon
Correcting For Unequal Catchability In Sex Ratio And Population Size Estimates, Donald T. Mcknight, Day B. Ligon
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Wildlife populations often exhibit unequal catchability between subgroups such as males and females. This heterogeneity of capture probabilities can bias both population size and sex ratio estimates. Several authors have suggested that this problem can be overcome by treating males and females as separate populations and calculating a population estimate for each of them. However, this suggestion has received little testing, and many researchers do not implement it. Therefore, we used two simulations to test the utility of this method. One simulated a closed population, while the other simulated an open population and used the robust design to calculate population …

Erosion Of Refugia In The Sierra Nevada Meadows Network With Climate Change, Sean P. Maher, Toni Lyn Morelli, Michelle Hershey, Alan L. Flint, Lorraine E. Flint, Craig Mortiz, Steven R. Beissinger
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Climate refugia management has been proposed as a climate adaptation strategy in the face of global change. Key to this strategy is identification of these areas as well as an understanding of how they are connected on the landscape. Focusing on meadows of the Sierra Nevada in California, we examined multiple factors affecting connectivity using circuit theory, and determined how patches have been and are expected to be affected by climate change. Connectivity surfaces varied depending upon the underlying hypothesis, although meadow area and elevation were important features for higher connectivity. Climate refugia that would promote population persistence were identified …

Remarkable productivity has been achieved in crop species through artificial selection and adaptation to modern agronomic practices. Whether intensive selection has changed the ability of improved cultivars to maintain high productivity across variable environments is unknown. Understanding the genetic control of phenotypic plasticity and genotype by environment (G × E) interaction will enhance crop performance predictions across diverse environments. Here we use data generated from the Genomes to Fields (G2F) Maize G × E project to assess the effect of selection on G × E variation and characterize polymorphisms associated with plasticity. Genomic regions putatively selected during modern temperate maize …

Salinity is a major factor limiting crop productivity. Rice (Oryza sativa), a staple crop for the majority of the world, is highly sensitive to salinity stress. To discover novel sources of genetic variation for salt tolerance-related traits in rice, we screened 390 diverse accessions under 14 days of moderate (9 dS m-1) salinity. In this study, shoot growth responses to moderate levels of salinity were independent of tissue Na+ content. A significant difference in root Na+ content was observed between the major subpopulations of rice, with indica accessions displaying higher root Na+ and japonica …

Global Stability Of Zika Virus Dynamics, Savannah Bates, Hayley Hutson, Jorge Rebaza
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
The few mathematical models available in the literature to describe the dynamics of Zika virus are still in their initial stage of stability and bifurcation analysis, and they were in part developed as a response to the most recent outbreaks, including the one in Brazil in 2015, which has also given more hints to its association with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and microcephaly. The interaction between and the effects of vector and human transmission are a central part of these models. This work aims at extending and generalizing current research on mathematical models of Zika virus dynamics by providing rigorous global …
