Identification Of Nitric-Oxide Degradation Products Of Ascorbic Acid, Sushant Satyanarayan Kolipaka Jan 2017

Identification Of Nitric-Oxide Degradation Products Of Ascorbic Acid, Sushant Satyanarayan Kolipaka

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to possess many Anti-inflammatory effects. Ascorbic acid which is naturally present in human body is known to react with S-nitrosothiols (RSNO) directly to reduce RSNO to NO and produce free thiol groups, if present in more than millimolar concentration. Higher concentration of ascorbic acid is required because the reduction of RSNO is not caused by ascorbate instead, but instead a decomposed product of ascorbic acid. S-Nitroso-N-Acetylpenicillamine is used as an NO donor. An HPLC method is used for determination of the degradation product of ascorbic acid and simultaneously identifying the compound responsible for NO …

The Spatial Ecology Of Gray Wolves In The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan, 1994–2013, Shawn O'Neil Jan 2017

The Spatial Ecology Of Gray Wolves In The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan, 1994–2013, Shawn O'Neil

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

All natural processes are dynamic in space and time. Establishing the links between spatiotemporal patterns and ecological processes is critical for improving our understanding of natural systems. Empirical data representing wildlife populations is accumulating and increasingly involves spatiotemporal components. Wildlife monitoring programs for threatened, endangered, or other species of interest often involve radio-tracking of a sample of individual animals combined with census data. Such data are valuable both for conservation and management of populations and for testing ecological theories about species distribution and what influences patterns over time. We used 20 years of radio telemetry and snow tracking data to …

Rock Magnetic Investigation Of The Michigan Basin Soils And Sediments Overlying The Oil-Bearing Silurian Pinnacle Reefs, Jake Tresnak Jan 2017

Rock Magnetic Investigation Of The Michigan Basin Soils And Sediments Overlying The Oil-Bearing Silurian Pinnacle Reefs, Jake Tresnak

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

A relationship between the hydrocarbon migration and magnetic properties of near-surface sediments was investigated from several hundreds of samples collected over the hydrocarbon-bearing Silurian pinnacle reef belt of the Michigan Basin. The collected samples were investigated using several rock magnetic methods and optical microscopy. The investigation has not revealed a straightforward relationship between the magnetic susceptibility and hydrocarbon reservoirs within the reef belt; both anomalously high and low susceptibility values were observed. The elevated values are associated with newly formed magnetite in the form of spheroidal grains produced by hydrocarbon-related diagenesis while the extremely low susceptibilities may reflect dissolution of …

Dynamics Of Wild Red Raspberry (Rubus Idaeus L.) And The Influence On Tree Regeneration Within Silvicultural Openings In A Northern Hardwood Stand, Matthew J. Widen

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Previous studies have investigated how the abundance of raspberries (Rubus idaeus L.) impacts tree regeneration, but few have linked these impacts to location within canopy openings with a legacy tree. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated the presence, abundance, and location of raspberries within openings containing legacy trees and the resulting impacts on tree regeneration. During the winter of 2003, 49 openings were created of three sizes: small, medium, large and 20 reference single-tree selection sites in a northern hardwood stand in Ford Forest near Alberta, Michigan. Tree regeneration and vegetative species cover were recorded in 2005 and …

Laboratory, Computational And Theoretical Investigations Of Ice Nucleation And Its Implications For Mixed Phase Clouds, Fan Yang Jan 2017

Laboratory, Computational And Theoretical Investigations Of Ice Nucleation And Its Implications For Mixed Phase Clouds, Fan Yang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Ice particles in atmospheric clouds play an important role in determining cloud lifetime, precipitation and radiation. It is therefore important to understand the whole life cycle of ice particles in the atmosphere, e.g., where they come from (nucleation), how they evolve (growth), and where they go (precipitation). Ice nucleation is the crucial step for ice formation, and in this study, we will mainly focus on ice nucleation in the lab and its effect on mixed-phase stratiform clouds.

In the first half of this study, we investigate the relevance of moving contact lines (i.e., the region where three or more phases …

Methane Fluxes And Porewater Dissolved Organic Carbon Dynamics From Different Peatlands Types In The Pastaza-Marañon Basin Of The Peruvian Amazon., Jhon Del Aguila-Pasquel

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Relevant components of the carbon budget such as methane fluxes and porewater dissolved organic carbon (DOC) are poorly characterized in the Peruvian Pastaza Marañon basin (PMB). PMB is associated with a tropospheric hotspot for methane and therefore it may represent a significant methane source. We aimed to quantify the magnitude of CH4 fluxes and porewater DOC; and to determine their predictors across different peatland types in the PMB (open peatland, palm swamp, and pole forest). The study was conducted in two peatland sites covering the three main vegetation types in PMB. We collected gas and water samples using chamber-based …

Catalytic Hydrotreatment For The Development Of Renewable Transportation Fuels, Lilu Funkenbusch Jan 2017

Catalytic Hydrotreatment For The Development Of Renewable Transportation Fuels, Lilu Funkenbusch

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Biologically-derived feedstocks are a highly desirable source of renewable transportation fuel. They can be grown renewably and can produce fuels similar in composition to conventional fossil fuels. They are also versatile and wide-ranging. Plant oils can produce renewable diesel and wood-based pyrolysis oils can be made into renewable gasoline. Catalytic hydrotreatment can be used to reduce the oxygen content of the oils and increase their viability as a “drop-in” transportation fuel, since they can then easily be blended with existing petroleum-based fuels. However, product distribution depends strongly on feedstock composition and processing parameters, especially temperature and type of catalyst. Current …

Modeling And Simulation Of The Peristaltic Flow Of Newtonian And Non-Newtonian Fluids With Application To The Human Body, Samer Alokaily

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Computational models are developed to investigate peristaltic motion in the human gastro-intestinal tract. The peristaltic motion is simulated by means of traveling waves which deform the boundary of the tubes. An axisymmetric tube of uniform diameter is used to model the small intestines, and an axisymmetric conical geometry is developed to model the lower part of the human stomach. The conical geometry represents a simplification of the more complicated three-dimensional models of the human stomach that have been used in other studies. Also, they seeks to reduce computational costs and circumvent difficulties of mesh generation. The computations are performed within …

Effects Of Wildfire Severity On Early Successional Dynamics In Boreal Peatland Complexes, Elizabeth Ernst

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The Arctic-boreal region is experiencing changes in climate, trending toward warmer summers, resulting in a greater occurrence of wildfires with longer burning periods and higher intensities. Drought-like conditions dry surface fuels, leading to a higher probability of ignition, even in lowland peatlands. Previous work has been done to characterize post-fire succession rates in boreal upland sites, but much less is known of fire effects and early successional dynamics in lowland peatlands. Areas surrounding the Great Slave Lake in Canada’s Northwest Territories experienced exceptional wildfire activity in 2014 and 2015. These fires burned a variety of ecotypes, including bogs, fens, other …

Fluorescent Probe Development For Fructose Specific Transporters In Cancer, Joseph Fedie Jan 2017

Fluorescent Probe Development For Fructose Specific Transporters In Cancer, Joseph Fedie

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Carbohydrate transporters or GLUTs of the major facilitator superfamily (MFS) are responsible for transporting sugars into the cell and have been of research interest for decades. Disruptions, mutations, and over-activations of GLUTs have been linked to a number of major diseases including cancer, obesity, and diabetes. Differentiating between transporters is incredibly difficult due to highly conserved structures, and so specific targeting between transporters has proven a complex challenge. GLUTs are highly flexible in their conformations however exactly what will and will not pass through the transporter is ambiguous at best, and many attempt to target these transporters have failed.

Structural Characteristics And Corrosion Behavior Of Bio-Degradable Zn-Li Alloys In Stent Application, Shan Zhao Jan 2017

Structural Characteristics And Corrosion Behavior Of Bio-Degradable Zn-Li Alloys In Stent Application, Shan Zhao

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Zinc has begun to be studied as a bio-degradable material in recent years due to its excellent corrosion rate and optimal biocompatibility. Unfortunately, pure Zn’s intrinsic ultimate tensile strength (UTS; below 120 MPa) is lower than the benchmark (about 300 MPa) for cardiovascular stent materials, raising concerns about sufficient strength to support the blood vessel. Thus, modifying pure Zn to improve its mechanical properties is an important research topic.

In this dissertation project, a new Zn-Li alloy has been developed to retain the outstanding corrosion behavior from Zn while improving the mechanical characteristics and uniform biodegradation once it is implanted …

Characterization Of Ecological Water Stress In The U.S. Great Lakes Region Using A Geospatial Modeling Approach, Sara Alian

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Anthropocentric water resources management affects aquatic habitats by changing streamflow regime. Understanding the impacts of water withdrawal from different sources and consumption by various economic sectors at different spatial and temporal scales is key to characterizing ecologically harmful streamflow disturbances. To this end, we developed a generic, integrative framework to characterize catchment scale water stress at annual and monthly time scales. The framework accounts for spatially cumulative consumptive and non-consumptive use impacts and associated changes in flow due to depletion and return flow along the stream network. Application of the framework to the U.S. Great Lakes Region indicates that a …

Effects Of In-Situ Leaf-Level Canopy Warming In A Northern Hardwood Forest, Kelsey Carter Jan 2017

Effects Of In-Situ Leaf-Level Canopy Warming In A Northern Hardwood Forest, Kelsey Carter

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Rising mean annual temperatures due to climate change have intensified the need to understand the effects of warming on plant physiological processes. Forest photosynthesis is the most important pathways of terrestrial carbon sequestration, yet continued warming could reduce this important carbon sink. Photosynthesis is highly sensitive to temperature and begins to decline after an optimum temperature (Topt) is reached, leading to reduced carbon uptake. To date, logistical difficulties have limited our ability to test photosynthetic responses to sustained warming in mature forest canopies. In order to understand how elevated temperatures will affect forest ecosystems, we need to be …
