Assessing Responses Of Betula Papyrifera (Paper Birch) To Climate Variability In A Remnant Population Along The Niobrara River In Nebraska Through Dendroecological And Remote Sensing Techniques, Evan Bumann
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Remnant populations of the boreal species Betula papyrifera, found along north-facing canyons and river banks of the Niobrara River Valley in north-central Nebraska, represent one of the southernmost distributions of the species in North America. Although, the species has persisted in the Great Plains after the Wisconsin Glaciation due to the local topography and microclimatic conditions, canopy dieback has been reported in recent years, which is believed to be attributed to temperature change. Therefore, the goals of this research are to: 1) use dendroecological techniques, or the study of tree rings to assess the responses B. papyrifera to intra- and …

Covariation In Diaspore Mass And Dispersal Patterns In Threemediterranean Coastal Dunes In Southern Spain, Carmen Rodriguez, Teresa Navarro, Ali El Keblawy
Turkish Journal of Botany
The coastal dunes of southern Spain are an original Mediterranean ecosystem, insufficiently studied under dispersal. This study explores covariation patterns among diaspore mass, size, morphology, dispersal mode, and spatial dispersal in 78 native coastal dune species. Three coastal dunes under different climates were sampled and differentiated between fixed and mobile dunes. The Pérez-Harguindeguy methodology was applied and ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests were used in order to analyze the covariation. Diaspores were essentially small seeds or achenes (2-4 mm, from 10-5 to 1 g). The study revealed that diaspore mass is a key trait in the differentiation among dunes. …

Foliar Applications Of Alpha-Tocopherol Improves The Composition Of Fresh Pods Of Vigna Radiata Subjected To Water Deficiency, Muhammad Sadiq, Nudrat Aisha Akram, Muhammad Ashraf
Turkish Journal of Botany
Alpha-tocopherol (α-Toc), so-called vitamin E, is a low molecular weight lipophilic antioxidant that generally protects plants from stress-induced cellular oxidation. It is well known that exogenously applied α-Toc is effective in improving plant growth and developmental processes under adverse environmental conditions. The current study was performed to determine the best concentration of α-Toc [0 (no spray), 100, 200, and 300 mg L-1] that could improve the biological yield and chemical constituents of fresh green pods of mung bean (Vigna radiata) and hence their quality under varying water regimes. Foliar spray of α-Toc significantly improved total soluble proteins, chlorophyll a and …

Micromorphological Studies On The Genus Lotus L. (Fabaceae: Loteae) From Egypt, Momen Zareh, Ahmed Faried, Nashwa Farghaly
Turkish Journal of Botany
Trichomes, epidermal cell features, and seed coat sculpturing of 12 Lotus taxa from Egypt were studied using scanning electron microscopy. In addition, statistical analysis for the taxa under investigation was carried out. The results revealed that trichomes have high taxonomic significances between studied taxa. Anticlinal and periclinal cell walls and epidermal cell shape for the stem, leaf, and calyx for each taxon were examined. Seed coat sculpturing exhibited 4 main different surface patterns categories: rugose, reticulate, sulcate, and verrucate. These features can serve as good diagnostic characters at the species level of the genus Lotus.

The Ascocenda flavanone 3-hydroxylase (AcF3H) gene was successfully transformed into Dendrobium 5N white orchid plants using Agrobacterium-mediated gene transformation. In this study, for the first time, we report the construction of a plant expression vector harboring the AcF3H gene using the Gateway cloning system. Protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) were cocultivated with the Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain AGL1 harboring the plant expression vector pGWB5-AcF3H, which contained the hygromycin phosphotransferase (hpt) gene as a selectable marker. The highest transformation efficiency (10.13%) was achieved when PLBs were cocultivated with Agrobacterium cells for 15 min. Three months after the transformation, the plantlets were regenerated, and the …

Investigation Of The Regulation Mechanism Of Arabidopsis Thaliana Anion Channel Slah2, Fen-Yong Yao, Guo-Ning Qi, Jamshaid Husssain
Turkish Journal of Botany
In recent years a slow-type anion channel (SLAC) family composing five members, including slow anion channel associated 1 (SLAC1) and four SLAC1 homologs (SLAHs), has been identified in Arabidopsis thaliana. The anion channels are activated by calcium-dependent protein kinases (CPKs) and play crucial roles in mediating anion fluxes across plasma membranes. SLAH2 is specifically expressed in root stele cells and has been characterized as a nitrate-selective anion channel activated by CPK21 and CBL-interacting protein kinase 23 (CIPK23). However, the interaction between CPKs and SLAH2 and how it is regulated remains to be elucidated. In this study we found that SLAH2 …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Study Of Thromboembolism As A Function Of Shunt Size And Placement In The Hybrid Norwood Palliative Treatment Of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, John Seligson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Hybrid Norwood procedure has emerged as a promising alternative palliative first stage treatment for infants with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). The procedure is done to provide necessary blood flow to the pulmonary and systemic regions of the body. The procedure can affect hemodynamic conditions to be pro-thrombotic, and thrombus particles can form and release from the vessel walls and enter the flow. Assuming these particles are formed and released from the shunt surface, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model can be used to mimic the patient's vasculature geometry and predict the occurrence of embolization to the carotid or …
The Effects Of A Yoga Intervention On Motor Skills In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Morgan K. Wright
The Effects Of A Yoga Intervention On Motor Skills In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Morgan K. Wright
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) display a range of motor delays and deficits that may contribute to ASD symptoms, including social and communicative skills and repetitive and stereotyped behaviors. Limited motor abilities may result in a less physically active lifestyle and engagement in more sedentary behavior. Few studies have examined the effects of physical activity based motor interventions on motor skills. Yoga interventions can be used to teach gross motor skills by providing explicit instruction using behavioral principles. Several studies suggest that yoga may also improve social and communicative skills and behavior problems; however, these studies have not systematically …
Establishing Applicable Water Quality Standards For Surface Waters On Indian Reservations, Jin Hyung Lee
Establishing Applicable Water Quality Standards For Surface Waters On Indian Reservations, Jin Hyung Lee
Emory Law Journal
The Clean Water Act is the foundational water law in the United States. It seeks to protect the nation¿s waters through establishing programs that limit pollutant discharge into surface waters. Although all states have water quality standards for surface waters that run through their respective boundaries, most tribes lack water quality standards that are applicable for establishing effluent limitations under the Clean Water Act. This Comment proposes a solution to this regulatory gap in the Clean Water Act. It suggests the Environmental Protection Agency ought to promulgate a new rule making tribal water quality standards applicable for Clean Water Act …
Aia Proceedings: A Prescription For Accelerating The Availability Of Generic Drugs, Nora Xu
Aia Proceedings: A Prescription For Accelerating The Availability Of Generic Drugs, Nora Xu
Emory Law Journal
The Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984 increases patient access to lower-cost generic drugs. The Hatch-Waxman framework creates an automatic stay that blocks the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from approving a new generic drug for thirty months. The America Invents Act (AIA) of 2011 created new administrative proceedings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that replace certain aspects of district court patent litigation. This Comment examines the relevant statutory provisions of the Hatch-Waxman Act and AIA and explores the scenarios that give rise to uncertainty about the thirty-month stay. It argues that the thirty-month stay should terminate when the …
The Big Patent Short: Hedge Fund Challenges To Pharmaceutical Patents And The Need For Financial Regulation, Ariel D. Multak
The Big Patent Short: Hedge Fund Challenges To Pharmaceutical Patents And The Need For Financial Regulation, Ariel D. Multak
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
The enactment of the America Invents Act (AIA) in 2011 ushered in a new system for post-grant patent review. In the interest of enhancing the efficiency of the patent regime by invalidating “bad” patents, certain requirements were relaxed. For example, the AIA created an examination process called inter partes review, which allows a party without legal standing to challenge the validity of a patent in front of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. In the pharmaceutical patent context, it was expected that inter partes review would be utilized mostly by generic drug makers seeking to invalidate patents without incurring the …
Bringing Talent Off The Bench And Into The Game: The Underrepresentation Of Women In The Boardroom, Rachel Orbach
Bringing Talent Off The Bench And Into The Game: The Underrepresentation Of Women In The Boardroom, Rachel Orbach
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
While women have expanded their footprint in corporate America in recent years, they are still underrepresented in the upper echelons of corporate governance, specifically in boardrooms, which dictate the direction of a company. At the current rate, it will take more than four decades before women’s representation on corporate boards reaches parity with that of men. Women face obstacles that make it difficult to rise in the ranks of corporate America. This can be attributed to numerous factors that collectively burden women with expectations that are at odds with success. These factors include low representation of women in traditional pipelines …

Neurobiology Of The Premonitory Urge In Tourette's Syndrome: Pathophysiology And Treatment Implications, Andrea E Cavanna, Kevin J. Black, Mark Hallett, Valerie Voon
2010-2019 OA Pubs
Motor and vocal tics are relatively common motor manifestations identified as the core features of Tourette's syndrome (TS). Although traditional descriptions have focused on objective phenomenological observations, such as anatomical location, number and frequency of tics, patients' first-person accounts have consistently reported characteristic subjective correlates. These sensory phenomena are often described as a feeling of mounting inner tension or urge to move ("premonitory urge"), which is transiently relieved by tic expression. This article reviews the existing literature on the clinical and neurobiological aspects of the premonitory urge in patients with TS, with focus on its pathophysiology and possible treatment implications.

Diversity: How Is Aall Doing?, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This paper describes the possible approaches to encouraging diversity within the workplace that are available to all professional organizations, including the American Association of Law Libraries [AALL]. Part I reviews the basic terms: discrimination, bias, and diversity. Reasons for pursuing diversity in the workplace are discussed in Part II. Two instrumental justifications and one intrinsic rationale reveal the range of motivations behind these projects. Each rationale supports its characteristic form of diversity: reflective, substantive, and cognitive. Because the kind of diversity determines the anticipated outcome, disagreement over progress may be the result of expecting different kinds of diversity. Clarity on …

The Effect Of Treatment Package Time In Head And Neck Cancer Patients Treated With Adjuvant Radiation Therapy And Concurrent Systemic Therapy, Ahmed I. Ghanem, Aniruddh Mannari, Matthew Schymick, Charlotte Burmeister, Tamer Ghanem, Steven S. Chang, Farzan Siddiqui
Radiation Oncology Meeting Abstracts
Purpose/Objective(s): In patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), the “treatment package time” (TPT), defined as the number of days from surgery to end of adjuvant radiation therapy (RT), has been shown to impact outcomes with TPT above 100 days resulting in worse survival. However, these studies were restricted to cases receiving only adjuvant RT with no data for those receiving concurrent systemic therapy (CRT). We analyzed the influence of TPT on survival endpoints for HNSCC treated by surgery followed by CRT.
Materials/Methods: After IRB approval, we used our institutional database to identify HNSCC cases treated with curative …

Capstone Collection
Music move us personally and with more meaning than any other medium in the world. In the past few decades, modern advances in neuroscience have proved via neuroimaging that musical processing involves almost every region of the brain, a task that no other stimulus can achieve. Science can show what is happening in our brain, but humans have intuitively known and utilized music for healing purposes since the beginning of humanity. This research examines the dynamics of continued scientific advancement in light of Non-Western ways of knowing. The study is an attempt to shorten the distance between music, healing and …

Aging Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: Eye-Tracking And Person-Perception Analyses Of Young And Old Faces, Stephanie M. Ha
Honors Theses
To examine possible mechanisms related to negative attitudes of aging revealed in face processing patterns, young and old participants rated their first impressions (positive or negative) of 100 faces of young and old individuals taken from the CAL/PAL Fate Database (Minear & Park, 2004) while gaze patterns were recorded using eye-tracking methods. In a follow-up study, an independent sample of young participants rated the same 100 faces on competence, attractiveness, and subjective age in order to further assess age-related stereotypes. This study replicated the T-gaze pattern in previous eye-tracking studies (Firestone, Turk, Browne, & Ryan 2007). We also found evidence …

Quantification Of Brain-Region Specific Alterations In Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 Expression During Developmental Hypothyroidism, Cari Lee Graber-Feesl
Quantification Of Brain-Region Specific Alterations In Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 Expression During Developmental Hypothyroidism, Cari Lee Graber-Feesl
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Insufficient thyroid hormone (TH) during development results in permanent neurological deficits. These deficits are the result of perturbed TH-mediated brain development. Interestingly, insufficient insulin-like growth factor 1 (Igf-1) during development results in neurological deficits that are similar to those reported for developmental hypothyroidism. This observation suggests that deficits associated with low TH during development may be the result of altered Igf-1 expression in the developing brain. To test this, timed-pregnant mice were treated with thyroid gland inhibitors from gestational day 16 (GD16) until postnatal day 21 (P21) to induce a hypothyroid state. A parallel set of untreated timed-pregnant mice were …
