Measurements Of Emotional Attributional Biases : A Confirmatory Study Of Infrahumanization, Courtney Tobin
Measurements Of Emotional Attributional Biases : A Confirmatory Study Of Infrahumanization, Courtney Tobin
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This study asks if infrahumanization a detectable individual trait, and how empathy and emotional literacy predict infrahumanization or emotional bias between groups. Black and white participants did not systematically attribute more distinctly human emotions to characters of different races in a series of vignettes, nor did cognitive empathy, empathic capacity, or anti-social personality traits predict a difference in emotional bias.
The Meaning Of Sexual And Gender Identities In Transgender Men, William B. Baker
The Meaning Of Sexual And Gender Identities In Transgender Men, William B. Baker
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the complexity of the lived experiences of trans men, how sexual orientation and gender identity play out in the lives of trans men, and how that lived experience changed during transitioning. The research was aimed at finding how sexual orientation and gender identity, usually treated as separate and independent constructs, interconnect with each other. Eight transgender men were interviewed in-depth over a period of several months. Their perspectives gave insight into how sexual and gender identities are related and how one informs the other.
The present study showed that …

Adult Learners, Learning Disabilities, And Mathematics : A Case Study, Marguerite Sheehan Flood
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The purpose of this research was to understand how mathematics is taught at a small, liberal arts college that self-advertised as accommodating diverse learners. A qualitative case study was conducted on the mathematics program at Waterview College. Waterview College is unique in that almost half of their students self-identify with a disability, including learning disabilities (LD). The number of students with learning disabilities that attend college is increasing; therefore it is important for mathematics instructors to understand and accommodate diverse learners. The data for this research were collected using one-on-one instructor interviews, classroom observations, and student focus group interviews. The …
Ferrate As A New Treatment Chemical For Removal Of Effluent Organic Matter (Efom) And Emerging Micro-Pollutants In Treated Municipal Wastewater For Water Reuse, Nanzhu Li
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Rapidly expanding population, escalating water consumption, and dwindling water resources make water shortage a crisis on a global level, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas or where water sources are highly contaminated. Water reuse, accomplished by a variety of water reclamation technologies, is a strategically sound approach to this crisis. In practice, secondary effluent that is the treated wastewater discharged from municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is a preferred reclaimed water source due to its high quality and stable quantity. However, various pollutants, effluent organic matters (EfOM) and emerging contaminants in particular, are still present in secondary effluent. They should …

Background: Most tailed bacteriophages (phages) feature linear dsDNA genomes. Characterizing novel phages requires an understanding of complete genome sequences, including the definition of genome physical ends.
Result: We sequenced 48 Bacillus cereus phage isolates and analyzed Next-generation sequencing (NGS) data to resolve the genome configuration of these novel phages. Most assembled contigs featured reads that mapped to both contig ends and formed circularized contigs. Independent assemblies of 31 nearly identical I48-like Bacillus phage isolates allowed us to observe that the assembly programs tended to produce random cleavage on circularized contigs. However, currently available assemblers were not capable of …
Discovering Forensic Fraud, Jennifer Oliva, Valena Beety
Discovering Forensic Fraud, Jennifer Oliva, Valena Beety

This Essay posits that certain structural dynamics, which dominate criminal proceedings, significantly contribute to the admissibility of faulty forensic science in criminal trials. The authors believe that these dynamics are more insidious than questionable individual prosecutorial or judicial behavior in this context. Not only are judges likely to be former prosecutors, prosecutors are “repeat players” in criminal litigation and, as such, routinely support reduced pretrial protections for defendants. Therefore, we argue that the significant discrepancies between the civil and criminal pretrial discovery and disclosure rules warrant additional scrutiny.
In the criminal system, the near absence of any pretrial discovery means …

The structural, magnetic and electron-transport properties of Co2Ti1-xFexSi (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5) ribbons prepared by arc-melting and melt-spinning were investigated. The rapidly quenched Co2Ti0.5Fe0.5Si crystallized in the cubic L21 structure whereas Co2Ti0.75Fe0.25Si and Co2TiFe0Si showed various degrees of B2-type disorder. At room temperature, all the samples are ferromagnetic, and the Curie temperature increased from 360 K for Co2TiSi to about 800 K for Co2Ti0.5Fe0.5Si. The measured magnetization also …

In this article we summarize histories of nonlinear, complex interactions among societal, legal, and ecosystem dynamics in six North American water basins, as they respond to changing climate. These case studies were chosen to explore the conditions for emergence of adaptive governance in heavily regulated and developed social-ecological systems nested within a hierarchical governmental system. We summarize resilience assessments conducted in each system to provide a synthesis and reference by the other articles in this special feature. We also present a general framework used to evaluate the interactions between society and ecosystem regimes and the governance regimes chosen to mediate …

Widespread Tau Seeding Activity At Early Braak Stages, Jennifer L. Furman, Jaime Vaquer-Alicea, Charles L. White, Nigel J. Cairns, Peter T. Nelson, Marc I. Diamond
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications
Transcellular propagation of tau aggregates may underlie the progression of pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other tauopathies. Braak staging (B1, B2, B3) is based on phospho-tau accumulation within connected brain regions: entorhinal cortex (B1); hippocampus/limbic system (B2); and frontal and parietal lobes (B3). We previously developed a specific and sensitive assay that uses flow cytometry to quantify tissue seeding activity based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) in cells that stably express tau reporter proteins. In a tauopathy mouse model, we have detected seeding activity far in advance of histopathological changes. It remains unknown whether individuals with AD also …

Bathroom Laws As Status Crimes, Stephen Rushin, Jenny E. Carroll
Articles
A growing number of American jurisdictions have considered laws that prohibit trans individuals from using bathroom facilities consistent with their gender identities Several scholars have criticized these socalled "bathroom laws" as a form of discrimination in violation of federal law Few scholars though have considered the criminal justice implications of these proposalsBy analyzing dozens of proposed bathroom laws this Article explores how many laws do more than stigmatize the trans community"”they effectively criminalize them Some of these proposed laws would establish new categories of criminal offenses for trans individuals who use bathrooms consistent with their gender identity Others would transform …
The Smell Of Neglect : A Trans-Corporeal Feminism For Environmental Justice, Dayna Scott
The Smell Of Neglect : A Trans-Corporeal Feminism For Environmental Justice, Dayna Scott
Articles & Book Chapters
Environmental justice struggles are increasingly contests waged over data and knowledge, involving claims of expertise and counter-expertise (Corburn 2003). A common observation is that a reliance on formal science elevates the data generated by accredited knowledge professionals to a prime political position, ‘leaving little or no room for the layperson’ (Fischer 2000: 51; Yearley 2000). This results in a growing tension between those who have ‘knowledge’ and those who do not, as well as the active re-negotiation of those categories (Wiebe 2013). Residents of pollution hotspots and their allies in the environmental justice movement make a normative claim for valuing …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
BACKGROUND: The prognostic significance of multiple draining basins is controversial in melanoma because analyses have not adequately controlled for standard prognostic variables. We hypothesized that an analysis based on prognostically matched pairs of patients with multiple versus single drainage basins would clarify any independent role of basin number.
STUDY DESIGN: We identified patients in our 40-year prospective database, who underwent preoperative lymphoscintigraphy, intraoperative sentinel node biopsy and wide local excision for cutaneous melanoma. Overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and disease-free survival (DFS) were compared in patients with multiple versus single drainage basins after matching by age, sex, Breslow depth, …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Ion channels and transporters have increasingly recognized roles in cancer progression through the regulation of cell proliferation, migration, and death. Glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs) are a source of tumor formation and recurrence in glioblastoma multiforme, a highly aggressive brain cancer, suggesting that ion channel expression may be perturbed in this population. However, little is known about the expression and functional relevance of ion channels that may contribute to GSC malignancy. Using RNA sequencing, we assessed the enrichment of ion channels in GSC isolates and non-tumor neural cell types. We identified a unique set of GSC-enriched ion channels using differential expression …

The innate immune response to pathogenic challenge is a complex, multi-staged process involving thousands of genes. While numerous transcription factors that act as master regulators of this response have been identified, the temporal complexity of gene expression changes in response to pathogen-associated molecular pattern receptor stimulation strongly suggest that additional layers of regulation remain to be uncovered. The evolved pathogen response program in mammalian innate immune cells is understood to reflect a compromise between the probability of clearing the infection and the extent of tissue damage and inflammatory sequelae it causes. Because of that, a key challenge to delineating the …

Factors That Influence Stem-Promising Females’ Decision To Attend A Non Research-Intensive Undergraduate Institution, Roxanne Greitz Miller, Ashley J. Hurlock
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Non research-intensive institutions of higher education are effective at narrowing STEM gender gaps in major selection and persistence to degree completion, yet the decision to attend such a setting is likely seen as counterintuitive when such institutions typically have lower levels of research, financial resources, and total student enrollments in the sciences. This case study identifies institutional factors reported by ‘STEM-Promising’ females, defined as females who completed at least one Advanced Placement (A.P.) STEM course in high school, as influencing their decision to attend their non research-intensive undergraduate institution. Using a quantitative, crosssectional research design and original survey, 23 out …

The Effect Of Justice And Injustice On Sleep Quality, Jessica Wooldridge Brown
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The effect of workplace stressors on physical health has been well documented (Ganster & Rosen, 2013; Nixon, Mazzola, Bauer, Krueger, & Spector, 2011). However, gaps in the research led to two main goals of the study: (1) understanding in a fuller range of reactions through the study of justice adherence and rule infraction and (2) exploring an explanation for the justice-health effects. This multilevel, daily diary study was designed to measure participants’ perceptions of organizational fairness and physical health. After that participants responded to daily surveys on the perceived supervisor interactions, emotions, rumination, and sleep quality over the course of …

Redox-Dependent Calcium-Mediated Signaling Networks That Control The Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype, Akshaya Chandrasekaran
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Cellular senescence has evolved as a protective mechanism to arrest growth of cells with oncogenic potential. While senescent cells have lost the ability to divide, they remain metabolically active and adapt a deleterious senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP) central to the progression of several age-associated disease pathologies. The SASP is mechanistically regulated by the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1α) whose expression and activity is responsive to the senescence associated (SA) oxidant production and the accompanying disruption of calcium (Ca2+) homeostasis. Using primary IMR-90 human fetal lung fibroblasts as a model of replicative senescence, we explored the molecular underpinnings driving Ca2+ …
Raman Spectroscopy And Chemometrics For Forensic Bloodstain Analysis : Species Differentiation, Donor Age Estimation, And Dating Of Bloodstains, Kyle C. Doty
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The field of forensic science is constantly growing, so the advancement of old and unreliable techniques is at the forefront of what will lead to future progress and improvement. Current methods for identification and analysis of bloodstains are underwhelming due to the insignificant amount of information provided in a destructive, unreliable, and unsafe manner. As is the purpose of this research, creating new methodologies that are rapid, nondestructive, robust, statistically reliable, and safe would significantly advance the way bloodstains are currently analyzed, while providing more useful and relevant information for investigations and criminal proceedings. Raman spectroscopy, along with advanced statistical …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The receptor of advanced glycation end product (RAGE) is a multiligand receptor of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell surface molecules, which plays an important role in immune responses. Full-length RAGE includes three extracellular immunoglobulin domains, a transmembrane domain and an intracellular domain. It is a pattern recognition receptor that can bind diverse ligands. NMR spectroscopy and x-ray crystallization studies of the extracellular domains of RAGE indicate that RAGE ligands bind by distinct charge- and hydrophobicity-dependent mechanisms. It is found that calgranulin binding to the C1C2 domain or AGEs binding to the V domain activates extracellular signaling, which triggers interactions of …

Mesh-Based Fourier Imaging For Biological And Security Applications, Danielle Justine Hayden
Mesh-Based Fourier Imaging For Biological And Security Applications, Danielle Justine Hayden
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Traditional x-ray imaging provides only low contrast from low atomic number materials, like soft tissue, due to the small attenuation variations producing very small intensity changes. Higher contrast can be achieved through phase information. The phase change is obtained from the x-ray refracting in a sample, or phase object, due to the difference in refractive indexes. This causes a small angular deviation from the original path. Phase contrast imaging has not been realized in everyday practice due to the requirement for large spatial coherence width of the x-ray beam which typically requires sources on the order of 10-50 m, the …
