Articles

The potential of Raman micro spectroscopy as an in vitro, non-invasive tool for clinical applications has been demonstrated in recent years, specifically for cancer research. To further illustrate its potential as a high content and label free technique, it is important to show its capability to elucidate drug mechanisms of action and cellular resistances. In this study, cytotoxicity assays were employed to establish the toxicity profiles for 24 hr exposure of lung cancer cell lines, A549 and Calu-1, to the commercially available drug, doxorubicin (DOX). Raman spectroscopy, coupled with Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy and Flow Cytometry, was used to track …

Dental Pulp Response To Orthodontic Tooth Movement, Chih-Wei Wang, Kai-Long Wang, Kwok-Hing Ho, Shun-Chu Hsieh, Heng-Ming Chang Jan 2017

Dental Pulp Response To Orthodontic Tooth Movement, Chih-Wei Wang, Kai-Long Wang, Kwok-Hing Ho, Shun-Chu Hsieh, Heng-Ming Chang

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Pulp vitality may occasionally change while tooth experiencing orthodontic movement, and orthodontists are the particular group who concern this phenomenon if it happens. The respiration rate of dental pulp will be depressed inevitably in short term when tooth is subject to orthodontic force. If force level is extreme, circulatory interruption can occur and further induce pulp necrosis. When orthodontic movement on pulpalcompromised teeth (e.g. teeth with trauma history or large restorations) is required, the pulp response to orthodontic force should be monitored. This article provides an overall review on the pulpal reactions during orthodontic movement and dental movement on teeth …

Photoluminescence Of Lead Sulfide Quantum Dots Of Different Sizes In A Nanoporous Silicate Glass Matrix, Aleksandr P. Litvin, Anton Babaev, Peter Parfenov, Elena Ushakova, Mikhail Baranov, Olga Andreeva, Kevin Berwick, Anatoly Fedorov, Alexander Baranov

Articles

The optical properties of lead sulfide quantum dots (QDs) of different sizes embedded in a nanoporous silicate glass matrix (NSM) are investigated by steady-state and transient photoluminescence spectroscopy. The use of this matrix allows the fabrication of samples with reproducible optical characteristics, for both isolated and close-packed QDs. Low-temperature PL analysis of isolated QDs with sizes of 3.7 and 4.5 nm shows that the coefficient of temperature shift of the PL position changes sign with reducing QD size because of size-dependent contributions from thermal expansion, mechanical strain, and electron–phonon coupling. The PL intensity is determined by size-dependent splitting of the …

Ann-Based Shepwm Using A Harmony Search On A New Multilevel Inverter Topology, Fayçal Chabni, Rachid Taleb, M'Hamed Helaimi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This article presents the application of the harmony search (HS) optimization algorithm for selective harmonic elimination PWM (SHEPWM) in a new topology of multilevel inverters with reduced number of electronic switching elements. The main objective of the harmonic elimination strategy is eliminating undesired low-rank harmonics in order to improve the quality of the output waveform. The harmonic elimination strategy is achieved by solving a system of nonlinear equations. In this paper harmony search optimization is applied using artificial neural networks (ANNs) on a new 21-level inverter topology. The algorithm is based on a music improvisation process. MATLAB programming software is …

Natural History Of The Peaks Of Otter Salamander (Plethodon Hubrichti) Along An Elevational Gradient, Timothy Brophy, Norman Reichenbach

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Peaks of Otter salamander, Plethodon hubrichti, is a montane species found at elevations above 442 m within a 117 km2 area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia, USA. In areas of this species’ range where the Eastern Red-backed salamander Plethodon cinereus, a potential competitor, is absent, surface-active salamander density was hypothesised to decrease at lower elevations due to increased temperatures and lower humidities, which may adversely affect salamander reproductive output and survival rates. Eggs/female, % gravid females, surface-active salamander density, temperature and relative humidity were recorded from nine sites ranging in elevation from 488 to 1143 m. …

Characteristics Of Successful Puma Kill Sites Of Elk In The Black Hills, South Dakota, Chadwick P. Lehman, Christopher T. Rota, Mark A. Rumble, Joshua J. Millspaugh

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Elk Cervus canadensis nelsoni in the Black Hills, South Dakota, have been declining since 2006 and there is concern by resource managers and hunters that puma Puma concolor predation may be contributing to declining herds. We evaluated characteristics at sites where puma successfully killed elk in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We evaluated characteristics at coarse (79-ha plots) and fine (0.2-ha plot) scales across the landscape. Our primary objective was to obtain a better understanding of vegetation and terrain characteristics that may have facilitated greater susceptibility of elk to predation by puma. We evaluated effects of road density, terrain …

Development And Application Of A Fish-Based Index Of Biotic Integrity For Lakes In Eastern South Dakota, Daniel T. Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) was developed to summarize the impact of watershed and water quality degradation to biotic communities and help to provide a more complete picture of water quality changes that are not captured in traditional physical and chemical measurements. In 2014, nearly 15% of South Dakota lakes did not meet their designated beneficial uses based on water quality measures but the impacts to the fish communities are unknown. The goal of this study was to develop a fish-based IBI for eastern South Dakota lakes by addressing three specific objectives:
1) Determine whether an IBI could be …

Dissecting The Histone-Binding Mechanism Of A Phd Finger Subtype, Daniel Boamah Jan 2017

Dissecting The Histone-Binding Mechanism Of A Phd Finger Subtype, Daniel Boamah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Disordered tails of histones are critical information retrieval hub and thus, aberrations in the flow of information through these hubs are associated with a number of pathological consequences in human. Mechanism for retrieval of information from these hubs is achieved by protein-protein interaction, i.e. proteins dock onto histone tails to initiate chromatin signaling. Eukaryotes have a number of small peptide binding domains that have evolved to specifically interact with histone tails, and these domains called histone readers as they read the information encoded on histone tails. Plant homeodomain (hereafter PHD) finger, a binucleated zinc finger, family is one such histone …

Using Rna Seq To Define Genes And Pathways Affecting Salmonella Vaccine Response In Beef Cattle, Sara Awrahman Jan 2017

Using Rna Seq To Define Genes And Pathways Affecting Salmonella Vaccine Response In Beef Cattle, Sara Awrahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A Salmonella siderophore receptor and porin (SRP) proteins vaccine is an intervention strategy to control Salmonella burden in cattle. The vaccine works by stimulating immunity to produce antibodies against bacterial SRPs as siderophore molecules play a major role in transporting iron to bacteria. Blocking iron uptake system by antibodies causes death of bacterial cells. The vaccine can also be useful to protect humans against salmonellosis, which causes high rates of illness and death annually, by reducing shedding of Salmonella in the feces of cattle. Though other researchers have evaluated efficacy and immune response of this Salmonella SRP vaccine, genes …

“Creating A New Mythos”: Reassessing Race Standards And Latina/O Students, Margarita Vizcarra Jan 2017

“Creating A New Mythos”: Reassessing Race Standards And Latina/O Students, Margarita Vizcarra

Master's Theses

This research will focus on the race and ethnicity categories used to classify people in the United States in relation to school age students. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) first standardized federal race and ethnicity categories in 1977 in order to enforce compliance with civil rights laws. In 1997 revisions were made to these standards due to increasing criticism by the public, advocacy groups, and government agencies (Williams, 2006). The 1977 decision by the OMB designated the category of Hispanic, or Latino, as an ethnicity rather than a race which was once again upheld in the 1997 update. …

The Role Of Phage Trnas In The Evolution Of Codon Usage Biases In Giant Pseudomonas Phage Phikz And El, Stephanie Steidel Jan 2017

The Role Of Phage Trnas In The Evolution Of Codon Usage Biases In Giant Pseudomonas Phage Phikz And El, Stephanie Steidel

Master's Theses

As the most abundant and diverse biological agents in the biosphere phage have significant roles in microbial ecology, acting both as lethal bacterial parasites and vehicles of horizontal gene transfer. Phage/host coevolution drives optimization of phage codon usage for use of host translational machinery, thus lowered correspondence between phage and host codon usage reduces viral fitness. Some phage may partially bypass host translational selection on their codon usage by encoding their own tRNAs, although the effects of these tRNAs on phage codon usage and translation has not been well examined. This work explores the influence of phage encoded tRNAs on …

Breaking Energy Path Dependencies, Amy L. Stein Jan 2017

Breaking Energy Path Dependencies, Amy L. Stein

UF Law Faculty Publications

f the many barriers to clean energy development discussed in the literature, the power of the status quo is not normally one of them. Yet beyond the need for more transmission lines, the need to decouple electricity sales from revenue, or the need to amend our environmental laws to more fully capture the externalities of energy, efforts to develop clean energy are faced with over a century of institutional “stickiness” associated with the legal and regulatory framework governing energy. This article explores how path dependency theories can inform the practical legal efforts to overcome such stickiness, identifying the troublesome approaches …

Straight Out Of Compton: Developmental Equality And A Critique Of The Compton School Litigation, Nancy E. Dowd Jan 2017

Straight Out Of Compton: Developmental Equality And A Critique Of The Compton School Litigation, Nancy E. Dowd

UF Law Faculty Publications

In Part I, I set out my developmental equality model in three sections. First, I briefly explore the ecological perspective on child development, a broadly accepted developmental model, and its relation to best interests. Second, I consider the limitations of a ‘neutral’ ecological perspective, using as my example data about the life course of African American boys from birth to age 18. Finally, I suggest how to shift the lens to one of developmental equality, using the theoretical models of Cynthia Garcia Coll and Margaret Beale Spencer. While linked to the experience of children of color in the United States, …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Johne’s Disease (JD), caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), results in significant economic loss to livestock production. The early detection of MAP infection in animals with extant serological assays has remained challenging due to the low sensitivity of commercially available ELISA tests, a fact that has hampered the development of effective JD control programs. Our recent protein microarray-based studies identified several promising candidate antigens that are immunogenic during different stages of MAP infection. To evaluate these antigens for use in diagnostic assays and reliably identify animals with MAP infection, a multiplex (Luminex®) assay was developed using color-coded flourescent beads …

Glocalizing Women's Health And Safety: Migration, Work, And Labor, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol Jan 2017

Glocalizing Women's Health And Safety: Migration, Work, And Labor, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

Worldwide, women's equality remains elusive in the social, political, civil, economic and cultural spheres. Such reality presents a challenge in the movement of persons across state borders because, globally, the world is experiencing a feminization of migration. In turn, the feminization of migration effects threats to the health and safety of migrant women, whose well-being is in peril at all stages of the migration journey – from the country of origin, to the transit states, to the receiving state – from smugglers and official actors alike. Because the globalization discourses exclude the movement of persons and focus on the movement …

Romantic Ends: Death And Dying, 1776-1835, Andrew J. Welch Jan 2017

Romantic Ends: Death And Dying, 1776-1835, Andrew J. Welch

Dissertations

Romantic Ends reinterprets of the origins and legacies of romantic death, the cultural spectacle exemplified by the dramatic deaths of young poets like John Keats. Against the widespread belief that romanticism ushered in a uniquely theatrical vision of death, Romantic Ends traces a long history of death as rhetorical performance, from the early modern ars moriendi ("art of dying") to the neoclassical obsession with the good death. The poetic deaths of the romantic period established a new repertoire of tropes and figures out of these longstanding and disparate deathbed traditions, set within the emerging discursive arena of "poetry." Yet while …

Theobroma cacao gives higher yield when cultivated in full sun under irrigation system with fertilization, because is a species little conservative in relation the efficiency of water use. On the other hand, T. cacao is usually cultivated under shade conditions in ‘Cabruca’ and agroforestry systems but with low yield. It has been observed under field conditions that the genotypes of T. cacao with high concentration of anthocyanins in young leaves are more tolerant to high irradiance stress when grown in full sun. The accumulation of flavonoids or other UVabsorbing compounds in the leaf epidermis is one of the …

Palencia, Victor S. Sobolev, Bruce W. Horn, Hank T. Sheppard, Marshall C. Lamb, Xinye M. Wang, Brian E. Scheffler, Jaime Martinez Castillo, Renee S. Arias

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Aflatoxins are among themost powerful carcinogens in nature. The major aflatoxin-producing fungi are Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus. Numerous crops, including peanut, are susceptible to aflatoxin contamination by these fungi. There has been an increased use of RNA interference (RNAi) technology to control phytopathogenic fungi in recent years. In order to develop molecular tools targeting specific genes of these fungi for the control of aflatoxins, it is necessary to obtain their genome sequences. Although high-throughput sequencing is readily available, it is still impractical to sequence the genome of every isolate. Thus, in this work, the authors proposed a workflow …
