An Examination Of Low-Income Minority Parents' And Guardians' Experiences With The Special Education Process Using A Strengths-Based Perspective, Carla Braun
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of low-income, minority parents and guardians of primary-aged children in the special education process using a strengths-based perspective. Minority students are currently overrepresented in the field of special education; thus, this study sought to to uncover possible reasons for that occurrence. This study was conducted in a school district in a suburban city outside of Chicago, Illinois. Four participants, three mothers and one grandmother who was legal guardian of her grandchild, were observed in one special education meeting each, participated in two one-on-one interviews, and took part in a focus …
Vegetation Response To Repeated Prescribed Burning And Varied Wildfire Severity In Upland Forests On The Cumberland Plateau, Kentucky, Zachary W. Poynter
Vegetation Response To Repeated Prescribed Burning And Varied Wildfire Severity In Upland Forests On The Cumberland Plateau, Kentucky, Zachary W. Poynter
Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources
As a result of decades of fire suppression, oaks (Quercus L.) and other disturbance-dependent tree species are experiencing widespread regeneration failure. Today, fire takes the form of relatively low to moderate intensity prescribed fire, used to restore fire adapted ecosystems, and wildfires which often vary in severity. I investigated long-term changes to forest structure and composition in response to repeated prescribed burning followed by an extended period of no fire. Burning reduced total basal area, midstory stem density and sapling stem density. However, the fire-free interval significantly increased sapling layer stem densities of oaks and competitor species. This research …
In The Shadow Of A Myth: Bargaining For Same-Sex Divorce, Noa Ben-Asher
In The Shadow Of A Myth: Bargaining For Same-Sex Divorce, Noa Ben-Asher
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
This Article explores a relatively new phenomenon in family law: same-sex divorce. The Article's central claim is that parties to the first wave of same-sex divorces are not effectively bargaining against the backdrop of legal dissolution rules that would govern in the absence of an agreement. In other words, to use Robert Mnookin and Lewis Kornhauser's terminology, they are not "bargaining in the shadow of the law." Instead, the Article argues, many same-sex couples today bargain in the shadow of a myth that same-sex couples are egalitarian—that there are no vulnerable parties or power differentials in same-sex divorce.

Maintaining Ecosystem Resilience: Functional Responses Of Tree Cavity Nesters To Logging In Temperate Forests Of The Americas, Jose Tomas Ibarra, Michaela Martin, Kristina L. Cockle, Kathy Martin

Logging often reduces taxonomic diversity in forest communities, but little is known about how this biodiversity loss affects the resilience of ecosystem functions. We examined how partial logging and clearcutting of temperate forests influenced functional diversity of birds that nest in tree cavities. We used point-counts in a before-after-control-impact design to examine the effects of logging on the value, range, and density of functional traits in bird communities in Canada (21 species) and Chile (16 species). Clearcutting, but not partial logging, reduced diversity in both systems. The effect was much more pronounced in Chile, where logging operations removed critical nesting …

Structural And Mechanistic Insights Into Hemoglobincatalyzed Hydrogen Sulfide Oxidation And The Fate Of Polysulfide Products, Victor Vitvitsky, Pramod K. Yadav, Sojin An, Javier Seravalli, Uhn-Soo Cho, Ruma V. Banerjee
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Hydrogen sulfide is a cardioprotective signaling molecule but is toxic at elevated concentrations. Red blood cells can synthesize H2S but, lacking organelles, cannot dispose of H2S via the mitochondrial sulfide oxidation pathway. We have recently shown that at high sulfide concentrations, ferric hemoglobin oxidizes H2S to a mixture of thiosulfate and iron-bound polysulfides in which the latter species predominates. Here, we report the crystal structure of human hemoglobin containing low spin ferric sulfide, the first intermediate in heme-catalyzed sulfide oxidation. The structure provides molecular insights into why sulfide is susceptible to oxidation in human …

Short Carboxylic Acid-Carboxylate Hydrogen Bonds Can Have Fully Localized Protons, Jiusheng Lin, Edwin Pozharski, Mark A. Wilson
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Short hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) have been proposed to play key functional roles in several proteins. The location of the proton in short H-bonds is of central importance, as proton delocalization is a defining feature of low barrier hydrogen bonds (LBHBs). Experimentally determining proton location in H-bonds is challenging. Here, bond length analysis of atomic (1.15–0.98 Å) resolution X-ray crystal structures of the human protein DJ-1 and its bacterial homolog YajL was used to determine the protonation states of H-bonded carboxylic acids. DJ-1 contains a buried, dimer-spanning 2.49 Å H-bond between Glu15 and Asp23 that satisfies standard donor-acceptor distance criteria for …

Using Schools To Watch Program's Self-Study And Rating Rubric To Examine Middle-Grades Education In An Urban District, Arnetta P. Thompson
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between multiple characteristics of high-performing middle schools as identified in the schools to watch rubric and how those characteristics as well as grade configurations may affect students’ progression through their first year of high school. A student’s middle level experience strongly impacts the odds of graduating from high school. This is especially true of urban districts with a high-poverty student population. This study was conducted in such a district. Middle level education is supposed to serve as a catalyst of sorts to prepare students for high school, yet the current …

An Exploration Of The Aspects Of Physical Activity And Exercise Motives That Confer Risk Versus Protection From Disordered Eating Outcomes, Megan Pejsa-Reitz
An Exploration Of The Aspects Of Physical Activity And Exercise Motives That Confer Risk Versus Protection From Disordered Eating Outcomes, Megan Pejsa-Reitz
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A long-standing health initiative has been the recommendation for individuals to engage in regular physical activity because of its numerous physical and mental health benefits. However, engaging in “excessive exercise” is a compensatory behavior found in eating disorders. The present study sought to better understand exercise as both a health- and risk-behavior. Undergraduates (N = 1010) completed an online survey assessing disordered eating and exercise behavior. Results revealed that among individuals who engaged in a low level of physical activity, exercising for socializing reasons conferred risk for disordered eating, whereas higher socializing exercise motives were associated with lower disordered …

The purpose of this study was to examine the predictability of prenatal factors, including maternal depression, reflective functioning, and romantic attachment style, on maternal mental representations at seven months postpartum. The participants were 74 mothers, a subsample of the Perinatal Imaging of Neural Connectivity study (PINC). Data from the current study were collected using semi-structured interviews, including the Pregnancy Interview-Revised (PI-R) (Slade, Grunebaum, Huganir, & Reeves, 1987) and the Working Model of the Child Interview (WMCI; Zeanah, Benoit, Barton, & Hirshberg, 1996); and self-report questionnaires, including the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) (Cox, Holden, & Sagovsky, 1987) and the Experiences …
The New Designing Of The Nano-Indentation Method To Applying On The Aisi D-2 Steel, Tangyue Wu
The New Designing Of The Nano-Indentation Method To Applying On The Aisi D-2 Steel, Tangyue Wu
Wayne State University Theses
In this thesis, it is mainly to describe the new designed nano-indenataion. This kind of nano-indentation apparatus is much more inexpensive and almost has the same function to compare with the commercial one. The nano-indentation system can get the force-displacement wave, which is the way to determine the elastic and plastic properties for the particle materials. In the structure, it would describe the designing of the nano-indentation apparatus for a big partial of the thesis. This part is divided into 3 sub-part: hardware designing, software designing and data processing. The material, D2, is chosen to do the force-displacement wave, which …

Protein Phosphatase 2a Function And Regulation In Insulin Resistant Human Skeletal Muscle Cells, Shukurat Sulaiman
Protein Phosphatase 2a Function And Regulation In Insulin Resistant Human Skeletal Muscle Cells, Shukurat Sulaiman
Wayne State University Theses
Protein Phosphatase 2A (PP2A), a major serine/threonine phosphatase involved in insulin signaling pathway, plays a critical role in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (T2D), which is characterized with hyperinsulinemic hyperglycemic condition. Moreover, majority of the glucose disposal takes place in the skeletal muscle which is also the main tissue responsible for insulin resistance. The catalytic subunit of PP2A (PP2Ac) can interact with multiple regulatory subunits and other regulatory proteins as well as substrates. These interactions are important for maintain normal PP2A function and subsequent cell signaling. We hypothesized that hyperinsulinemic hyperglycemic condition and insulin stimulation would …
Legal Issues In Ip Protection For Additive Manufacturing, Sharon Flank
Legal Issues In Ip Protection For Additive Manufacturing, Sharon Flank
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
Additive manufacturing (“AM”) offers the power to design and create in new ways but also brings challenges in intellectual property protection and unauthorized copying, along with potential liability issues. One growing problem is counterfeiting, which is recognized as part of a worldwide industry estimated at over $1 trillion. “There are two basic paths to creating counterfeits with 3D printing.” First, the print instructions, in the form of a software design file, can be stolen, shared, or mocked up. Alternatively, an existing object “(including a genuine branded or licensed product)” can be 3D scanned to create a design file to print …

Within the context of North American Indigenous culture, certain Elders are respected gatekeepers to Indigenous science, also known as traditional knowledge. Yet, while North American born minorities such as Black Americans, Amerindians, and Latin Americans may hail from cultures with a similar appreciation of their own Indigenous science Elders, these minority groups are especially underrepresented in Western science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)—both in academia and in the workforce. North American underrepresented minorities experience high attrition rates in academia generally, and in STEM specifically. Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission makes a call to action to Indigenize education to benefit all …
