The Uncharted Waters Of Competition And Innovation In Biological Medicines, Erika Lietzan
The Uncharted Waters Of Competition And Innovation In Biological Medicines, Erika Lietzan
Faculty Publications
In 2010, Congress fundamentally changed how federal law encourages the discovery and development of certain new medicines and for the first time authorized less expensive “duplicates” of these medicines to be approved and compete in the marketplace. The medicines at issue are biological medicines, generally made from, or grown in, living systems. Many of the world’s most important and most expensive medicines for serious and life–threatening diseases are biological medicines.
We have a profound interest in understanding and evaluating the impact of this legislation on innovation and competition. Scholars and courts considering this question may be tempted to reason from, …

A Comprehensive Molecular Phylogeny Of Holocephalans And Identification Of Sex-Specific Genetic Markers In Chondrichthyan Fishes, Jenny Marie Kemper
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Holocephalan fishes occupy an important phylogenetic position as members of the basal clade of jawed vertebrates, as well as the sister group to bony vertebrates. Thus, they can be used to provide an important reference for comparative studies aimed at understanding early gnathostome genome evolution. However, despite this importance, holocephalans have been understudied, and no comprehensive phylogeny for their inter-relationships has been estimated. A phylogeny will provide information about ancestor-descendant relationships, forming a framework that can be used to test future hypotheses by mapping characters, identifying patterns, and estimating ancestral states. A cross-species hybridization capture method was used to sequence …

Can I Play Too? Transgender Student Athletes’ Inclusion In “Because Of Sex”, Paul Jones
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
This article seeks to explore what remedies may be available to transgender student athletes in today's changing legal field. The law is scant as to whether transgender student athletes must be allowed to play on the sex-segregated teams which correspond with their gender identity. New legislation may not be needed. Title VII and Title IX may offer protections for transgender student athletes. The legislative and judicial tools already exist.
Several federal courts have included gender identity under Title VII, yet Title VII currently only protects people who are considered to be employees. There is now a movement across college campuses …

The title diorganotin compound, [Sn(CH3)2(C28H32N2O4)], features a distorted SnC2NO2 coordination geometry almost inter-mediate between ideal trigonal-bipyramidal and square-pyramidal. The dianionic Schiff base ligand coordinates in a tridentate fashion via two alkoxide O and hydrazinyl N atoms; an intra-molecular hy-droxy-O - H...N(hydrazin-yl) hydrogen bond is noted. The alk-oxy chain has an all-trans conformation, and to the first approximation, the mol-ecule has local mirror symmetry relating the two Sn-bound methyl groups. Supra-molecular layers sustained by imine-C - H...O(hy-droxy), π-π [between dec-yloxy-substituted benzene rings with an inter-centroid separation of 3.7724 (13) Å], C - H...π(arene) and C - H...π(chelate ring) inter-actions are formed …

Snake envenomation is an important medical problem. One of the hurdles in antivenom development is the in vivo assay of antivenom potency which is expensive, gives variable results and kills many animals. We report a novel in vitro assay involving the specific binding of the postsynaptic neurotoxins (PSNTs) of elapid snakes with purified Torpedo californica nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). The potency of an antivenom is determined by its antibody ability to bind and neutralize the PSNT, thus preventing it from binding to nAChR. The PSNT of Naja kaouthia (NK3) was immobilized on microtiter wells and nAChR was added to bind …

Endothelial dysfunction caused by the combined action of disturbed flow, inflammatory mediators and oxidants derived from cigarette smoke is known to promote coronary atherosclerosis and increase the likelihood of myocardial infarctions and strokes. Conversely, laminar flow protects against endothelial dysfunction, at least in the initial phases of atherogenesis. We studied the effects of TNFα and cigarette smoke extract on human coronary artery endothelial cells under oscillatory, normal laminar and elevated laminar shear stress for a period of 72 hours. We found, firstly, that laminar flow fails to overcome the inflammatory effects of TNFα under these conditions but that cigarette smoke …

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a haematological malignancy characterized by the excessive proliferation of immature myeloid cells coupled with impaired differentiation. Many AML cases have been reported without any known cytogenetic abnormalities and carry no mutation in known AML-associated driver genes. In this study, 200 AML cases were selected from a publicly available cohort and differentially analyzed for genetic, epigenetic, and cytogenetic abnormalities. Three genes (FLT3, DNMT3A, and NPMc) are found to be predominantly mutated. We identified several aberrations to be associated with genome-wide methylation changes. These include Del (5q), T (15; 17), and NPMc mutations. Four aberrations—Del (5q), T …
