Financial Analysis With Artificial Neural Networks Short-Term Stock Market Forecasting, Andrew Linzie
Financial Analysis With Artificial Neural Networks Short-Term Stock Market Forecasting, Andrew Linzie
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Excerpt from Introduction
Seldom reward is absent from risk, and stock markets are a prime example. Stock markets across the world are viewed as profitable and risky at the same time. Companies have made a business out of forecasting these markets. Quantitative analysis companies use mathematicians, financial analysts, and computer scientists to compete in the stock market. The old days of floor trading have progressed towards high-frequency trading with supercomputers housed within the exchange. For example, the New York Stock exchange has created regulations for these companies so that there’s competitive equality. The computer’s power, length of cable to the …

Herbaceous Vascular Flora Of Forested Seep Wetlands In Winneshiek County, Iowa, Usa, Elizabeth A. Lynch, Anna Burke Weckwerth
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Forested seep wetlands dominated by skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus) occur frequently in the Canoe Creek watershed of the Upper Iowa River, but this type of wetland has not been described systematically in the upper Midwest. The goal of this study is to document the herbaceous plant flora of five seeps. Although individual seeps are small (200-500 m2), they provide habitat for a high number of plant species. Five seeps with total area less than 0.2 ha supported more than 120 native vascular herbaceous taxa, 20 of which have a coefficient of conservatism (C-value) of 7 or …
Adult Attachment Style And Inter-Parental Discrepancy On Pediatric Behavior Assessment Scales, Laura Beliech Harris
Adult Attachment Style And Inter-Parental Discrepancy On Pediatric Behavior Assessment Scales, Laura Beliech Harris
Doctoral Dissertations
The process of diagnosing pediatric psychopathology is an important and sometimes complex endeavor. Diagnoses are useful for facilitating communication among providers, setting therapy goals, and intervention selection. However, beyond their utility, diagnoses potentially can influence client-therapist rapport, therapeutic alliance, and therapy outcomes in a negative manner, as well as leading to stigma and discrimination against the client (child). Best practice for pediatric psychological evaluations includes obtaining data regarding the child's behavior in multiple settings and from multiple respondents. This is most often accomplished through administration of standardized objective pediatric behavior assessment instruments. However, collecting data from multiple respondents in this …

This article explains Donald Trump’s brutal political effectiveness in terms of his white nationalist appeal. It locates the intellectual, popular, and policy imperatives of Trumpism in a new form of racial politics that I am calling white nationalist postracialism. This is a paradoxical politics of twenty-first-century white racial resentment whose proponents seek to do two contradictory things: to reclaim the nation for white Americans while also denying an ideological investment in white supremacy. The article shows how Trump’s excoriation of political correctness, his nostalgia for the post–WWII industrial economy, his use of hand gestures, and his public speaking about race …
Young Chicanx On The Move: Folklórico Dance Education As A Mechanism Of Self-Assertion And Social Empowerment, Maya Salas
Scripps Senior Theses
In the context of Chicanx experiences in the United States, where varying generations of Chicanxs experience bicultural realities, this study shows how embodied knowledge performed through the body’s movements in folklórico dance by Chicanx youth from multiple generations, acts as a mechanism for reconnecting youth to cultural ties, reevaluating educational practices, and emplacing within youth, the ability to foster the confidence to express and create imagined futures. Data collection incorporated a series of interviews with eight Chicanx youth and adults who have either taught or danced folklórico in the Phoenix, Los Angeles, or Coachella Valley areas. Interview participants revealed a …

Diffuse radiation can increase canopy light use efficiency (LUE). This creates the need to differentiate the effects of direct and diffuse radiation when simulating terrestrial gross primary production (GPP). Here, we present a novel GPP model, the diffuse-fraction-based two-leaf model (DTEC), which includes the leaf response to direct and diffuse radiation, and treats maximum LUE for shaded leaves (εmsh defined as a power function of the diffuse fraction (Df)) and sunlit leaves (εmsu defined as a constant) separately. An Amazonian rainforest site (KM67) was used to calibrate the model by simulating the linear relationship between …

A Vascular Flora Of The Kiavah Wilderness, Scodie Mountains, Kern County, California, Erika M. Gardner
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Congress designated the Kiavah Wilderness in 1994 under the California Desert Protection Act. It is located in the Scodie Mountains in Kern County, ca. 24 km (15 mi) east of Lake Isabella and 24 km (15 mi) west of Ridgecrest, and encompasses a total of 137 mi2 (354 km2) with elevations ranging from 1000 to 2200 m (3500–7294 ft). The Wilderness is ecologically important because it occurs in a transition zone between two floristic provinces, the Sierra Nevada of the California Floristic Province and the Mojave Desert of the Desert Province. It is of cultural significance because …

Plant Phenology And Water Relations In A Saline Pan-Dune Mosaic In The Western Mojave Desert, M. Rasoul Sharifi, William N. Brostoff, Philip W. Rundel
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
An extensive mosaic of small clay pans and low stable dunes exists within Edwards Air Force Base in the western Mojave Desert of California. This pan-dune ecosystem, positioned between the large Rosamond and Rogers dry lakes on the old Pleistocene lakebed of Lake Thompson, provides an opportunity to study the seasonal patterns in growth and flowering phenology and water relations in a saltbush scrub community dominated by a mix of C3 and C4 species. C3 shrubs initiated vegetative growth in February, with current shoot and leaf production largely ceasing in most species by mid-April. The deeply rooted …

Bone-Specific Alkaline Phosphatase And Bone Turnover In African American Hemodialysis Patients, Lenar Yessayan, Carol L. Moore, Mei Lu, Jerry Yee
Nephrology Articles
INTRODUCTION: Noninvasive measures of bone activity include intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BSAP). Whether BSAP measurement alone or in combination with other biochemical data provides more reliable information about bone turnover than iPTH alone in African Americans on hemodialysis is unknown.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the optimal predictor and cutoff points for BSAP, iPTH, calcium and phosphorus in classifying bone biopsy findings. Forty-three African American hemodialysis patients were available for analysis. Biochemical data on the day of biopsy across a spectrum of qualitative histologic bone features were compared. Classification and regression tree analysis was …

The Role Of Oxidation-Sensitive Nociception And Epigenetics In Endometriosis-Associated Pain, Kristeena Ray Wright
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Endometriosis is an enigmatic disease that is associated with severe symptoms and consequences such as total hysterectomy. Upwards of 10% of women of reproductive age have endometriosis, most of whom are afflicted with chronic pelvic pain and/or infertility. Despite many treatment options available to endometriosis patients, there is no cure for this condition and recurrence of symptoms is extremely common. In CHAPTER 1, we describe the mechanisms involved in endometriotic pain and the currently available treatment strategies. Our laboratory has provided evidence for the role of oxidative stress in the etiology of endometriosis and its associated pain. In this dissertation …

The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial and fungal strains poses a threat to human health that requires the design and synthesis of new classes of antimicr obial agents. We evaluated bis(N-amidinohydrazones) and N-(amidino)-N'-aryl-bishydrazones for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against panels of Gram-positive/Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. We investigated their potential to develop resistance against both bacteria and fungi by a multi-step, resistance-selection method, explored their potential to induce the production of reactive oxygen species, and assessed their toxicity. In summary, we found that these compounds exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activities against most of …

A Cmos Synapse Design Implementing Tunable Asymmetric Spike Timing-Dependent Plasticity, Robert C. Ivans, Kurtis D. Cantley, Justin L. Shumaker
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A CMOS synapse design is presented which can perform tunable asymmetric spike timing-dependent learning in asynchronous spiking neural networks. The overall design consists of three primary subcircuit blocks, and the operation of each is described. Pair-based Spike Timing-Dependent Plasticity (STDP) of the entire synapse is then demonstrated through simulation using the Cadence Virtuoso platform. Tuning of the STDP curve learning window and rate of synaptic weight change is possible using various control parameters. With appropriate settings, it is shown the resulting learning rule closely matches that observed in biological systems.

Mutagenic treatment such as gamma radiation causes random changes in the nuclear DNA, leading to mutations at chromosomal, gene and genomic level that may result in plant phenotypic variability. Plants have evolved a complex mechanism for DNA damage detection and repair, involving developmental and stress-sensitive genes that are regulated by histone acetylase (HAT) and histone deacetylase (HDAC). HAT causes the chromatin structure to relax, enabling the DNA repair machineries to bind to the promoter site. The reaction of HDACs is always reversed by HATs. The aim of this study was to analyse the HDAC activities of gamma-irradiated pineapple, Ananas comosus …

Development Of An Assessment Toolkit To Measure Higher Order Thinking Skills Among Secondary School Learners, S.C. Loh, C.K. Loo, M.F.M. Mamauag, S.G. Arosh
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Higher order thinking skills (HOT) emerged as the focus of student development across the primary to post-secondary levels since the publication of the Malaysian Education Blueprint (2013-2025). This blueprint outlines the need for thinking skills encompassing creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and logical reasoning for students to adapt within the ever-changing technological landscape of the new millennia (Ministry of Education, 2013). Despite MOE's effort to implement PT3 (Form 3 Assessment) and HOTS questions in national school-leaving examinations, it apparently failed to accurately measure the levels of HOTS independent of content knowledge among Malaysian students. This study, therefore, was conceived to address …

Mass migration from less developed to more developed countries have created a shift in the global population. Urbanization and extension in industrialization of developing nations have resulted in millions migrants migrating to major urban cities around the globe to cope with expanding workforce. This has attracted many to flock to major cities in Malaysia both legal and illegally from the South East Asia (Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Myanmar) and South Asian countries (Nepal, India and Bangladesh) where endemic infections are very much prevalent and most likely to pose public health problems to the local community. Presently, compulsory medical …

Healthy Aging In The North: Sociocultural Influences On Diet And Physical Activity Among Older Adults In Anchorage, Alaska, Britteny M. Howell
Healthy Aging In The North: Sociocultural Influences On Diet And Physical Activity Among Older Adults In Anchorage, Alaska, Britteny M. Howell
Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology
Increasing rates of overweight, obesity, and related cardiovascular diseases among older adults in the United States present unique public health challenges. Cross-cultural research has shown marked variation in health across the world’s elder populations because aging is a biological process rooted in sociocultural context. The sociocultural environment contributes to complex negotiations of food and physical activity patterns for older adults. It is well established in the literature that urban residents report low levels of physical activity and have easy access to fast food outlets, which tend to be concentrated in lower-income neighborhoods. I utilize a biocultural framework, integrating nutritional anthropology …

Substituent Strength Vs Reactivity: A Study Of 1,3,4-Oxadiazoles And Electron Donating Groups, Katlynn Merringer
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
This investigation focused on determining if there was a relationship between electron donating group substituent strength and resulting percent yield values of the 1,3,4-oxadiazole product. The data obtained from this investigation aimed to help chemists better understand the reactivity of the 1,3,4-oxadiazole because of its importance in the realm of drug design and development. In order to accomplish this, electron donating groups with varying pKa values were placed on the 1,3,4-oxadiazole and the resulting percent yields were analyzed for possible trends. The substituents used represented both resonance donating and inductively donating groups and were placed in both ortho and para …
Synthesis Of Oxadeazoles With Electron Withdrawing Groups And The Analysis Of Product Yield With Bond Length, Elizabeth Ann Hall Peters
Synthesis Of Oxadeazoles With Electron Withdrawing Groups And The Analysis Of Product Yield With Bond Length, Elizabeth Ann Hall Peters
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
2,5-disubstituted 1,3,4-oxadiazoles are a class of organic compound that are widely used and successful in pharmaceutical chemistry because they demonstrate strong biological activity. They are part of a larger class of compound called heterocycles, which make up most pharmaceutical drugs today. When synthesizing the compounds, higher yield means higher reactivity of the compound, and this is important for pharmaceuticals that need to have a strong biological activity. Per past studies, electron withdrawing groups on the compound allow higher, product yields. Along with electron withdrawing group addition, the bond length from electron withdrawing group and its corresponding carbon is analyzed to …
