Fate And Impacts Of Priority Pollutant Metals In Coal Fly Ash–Soil–Switchgrass Plant Mesocosms, Olushola M. Awoyemi, E. Kudjo Dzantor
Fate And Impacts Of Priority Pollutant Metals In Coal Fly Ash–Soil–Switchgrass Plant Mesocosms, Olushola M. Awoyemi, E. Kudjo Dzantor
Coal Combustion and Gasification Products Journal Archive
Coal fly ash (CFA) is a coal combustion by-product containing heavy metals (HMs) that can enter and accumulate in environmental matrices. The current study assessed the fate and effects of HMs contained in CFA on Armour silt loam (ASL) soil, switchgrass plant, and leachate. Soil impact indices compared levels of HMs in the CFA-soil admixtures to control soil (without CFA). These indices include contamination factor (*C*~f~), modified degree of contamination (m*C*~d~), and pollution load index (PLI). The ratio of the levels of HMs in switchgrass root and shoot tissues to their levels in the CFA-soil admixtures were used to determine …

Solar Climate Engineering And Intellectual Property: Toward A Research Commons, Jorge L. Contreras, Jesse L. Reynolds, Joshua D. Sarnoff
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges confronting society today. Solar climate engineering (SCE) has the potential to reduce climate risks substantially. This controversial technology would make the earth more reflective in order to counteract global warming. Though the science of SCE is still in its infancy, SCE research and development should proceed in a coordinated, responsible, and expeditious fashion. However, the role of patents, research data, and trade secrets in SCE research remains unclear and contested. To this end, this article identifies concerns that may arise through the acquisition of intellectual property rights in SCE and proposes the …

In 2002, shortly after Paul Hunt was named as the first UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, he presented his vision for promoting the right to health as a fundamental human right, clarifying the content of this right and identifying good practices at the community, national, and international levels. His vision remains true today for women’s health at the workplace in global supply chains. In an era where women and families must often migrate to find work, leaving behind their homes and support networks, the workplace can be a site where they can access resources and information to …
It's Not Just An Offshore Wind Farm: Combining Multiple Uses And Multiple Values On The Outer Continental Shelf, Robin Kundis Craig
It's Not Just An Offshore Wind Farm: Combining Multiple Uses And Multiple Values On The Outer Continental Shelf, Robin Kundis Craig
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Marine aquaculture and marine-based alternative energy, especially offshore wind, are increasingly competing for space on the Outer Continental Shelf and the water column above it with each other and with more traditional ocean uses. The laws governing this increasingly crowded space need to become better aware of changing uses of and values for the ocean and to promote rational planning of how this space is used in the future.
In one approach, various regions of the U.S. coast are actively engaged in comprehensive marine spatial planning. Marine spatial planning is a process designed to prioritize, balance, and rationally allocate the …
Relationships Between Levels Of Mindfulness And Subjective Well-Being In Undergraduate Students, Rikki J. Rosini, Amanda Nelson, Eve Sledjeski, Thomas Dinzeo
Relationships Between Levels Of Mindfulness And Subjective Well-Being In Undergraduate Students, Rikki J. Rosini, Amanda Nelson, Eve Sledjeski, Thomas Dinzeo
Modern Psychological Studies
College is often a period of unique demands and increased autonomy. The heightened stress associated with this period can contribute to mental health difficulties and maladaptive behaviors in a subset of students. The goal of the current study was to examine the role of mindfulness (i.e., awareness of, and appreciation for, the present moment and experiences) in experiencing negative emotions and lifestyle behaviors in 23 male and 19 female undergraduate students. Participants were randomly assigned to a mindfulness meditation condition or a cognitive activity control condition. Results suggest that higher levels of mindfulness are associated with better lifestyle habits, lower …
Prediction Of Protected-Permissive Left-Turn Phasing Crashes Based On Conflict Analysis, Shraddha Sagar
Prediction Of Protected-Permissive Left-Turn Phasing Crashes Based On Conflict Analysis, Shraddha Sagar
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Left-turning maneuvers are considered to be the highest risk movements at intersections and two-thirds of the crashes associated with left-turns are reported at signalized intersections. Left-turning vehicles typically encounter conflicts from opposing through traffic. To separate conflicting movements, transportation agencies use a protected-only phase at signalized intersections where each movement is allowed to move alone. However, this could create delays and thus the concept of a protected-permissive phase has been introduced to balance safety and delays. However, the permissive part of this phasing scheme retains the safety concerns and could increase the possibility of conflicts resulting in crashes. This research …
Pharmaceutical M&A Activity: Effects On Prices, Innovation, And Competition, Barak Richman, Will Mitchell, Elena Vidal, Kevin Schulman
Pharmaceutical M&A Activity: Effects On Prices, Innovation, And Competition, Barak Richman, Will Mitchell, Elena Vidal, Kevin Schulman
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
The rise of blockbuster pharmaceutical acquisitions has prompted fears that unprecedented market concentration will weaken competition. Two of the most prominent concerns focus on the upstream and downstream ends of the pharmaceutical industry: (1) the concern that these mergers will concentrate the market for discovery and will therefore lead to fewer discoveries; and (2) the concern that merging large marketing, sales, and distribution forces will strengthen the hands of select pharmaceutical manufacturers and weaken downstream competition. Having considered potential dynamic effects in the industry and conducted a series of preliminary interviews with knowledgeable observers, though, this Article argues that neither …

This is a report from two surveys that I created and administered to students and faculty at Bierce library who came to the Circulation Desk or the Tech Desk, as well as some of my other findings when periodically looking around the library to see where students like to study or hang-out. There was a written survey given at the Circulation Desk, and a different survey given at the Tech Check-Out Desk. The project is for Melanie Smith-Farrell, the head of Access Services, and is based on a similar study Ian McCullough did in the science library. While this is …
Variation In Arthropod Hydration Across Us Cities With Distinct Climate, Kevin E. Mccluney, Justin D. Burdine, Steven D. Frank
Variation In Arthropod Hydration Across Us Cities With Distinct Climate, Kevin E. Mccluney, Justin D. Burdine, Steven D. Frank
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Increasing evidence suggests that altered environmental conditions within cities (e.g. temperature) can have strong effects on the biology and ecology of animals. Moreover, multiple abiotic (e.g. soil moisture, distributions of water bodies) and biotic factors (e.g. plant and animal communities) may be more similar among cities in distinct climate regions as compared to outside cities. But the mechanisms behind these patterns are unclear. We suggest that animal physiological condition responds to urbanization and may become more similar with urbanization among cities. As a first attempt at assessing this possibility, we measured hydration (water content) of field-collected arthropods, across variation in …
Workplace Management Knowledge And Support For Employee Breastfeeding Practices, Elizabeth Heimer
Workplace Management Knowledge And Support For Employee Breastfeeding Practices, Elizabeth Heimer
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Breastfeeding has many benefits to both mother and child. It also happens to have benefits to workplaces who support breastfeeding. Research shows that lack of environmental support of breastfeeding at the workplace may discourage women from exclusively breastfeeding the recommended amount of time of SIX months (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2012). To investigate the management knowledge and workplace breastfeeding support services, an online survey was sent out employees in management positions at selected workplaces in Faribault, Martin and Watonwan counties in Minnesota. Of the 98 selected participants, only 16 participants completed the survey. The study aimed to discover whether there …

Intercorrelations Of Morphology With Hemodynamics In Intracranial Aneurysms In Computational Fluid Dynamics, Tianlun Qiu, Guoliang Jin, Wuqiao Bao, Haitao Lu
Neurosciences
Objective: To measure morphological indices and wall shear stress (WSS) of aneurysms and parent artery surface in order to explore the relationship of morphological characteristics and WSS. Methods: Data from 47 events of consecutive cerebral saccular aneurysms from 39 patients which were referred to the interventional Neuroradiology service of the Shaoxing People’s Hospital, Shaoxing, China between 2014 April and 2015 August. Wall shear stress and wall pressure (WP) of the pre-aneurysm, aneurysm and near vessel (<1.0 cm) surface were obtained. Correlation analysis was carried between morphological parameters and WSS and its ratio. WSS, WP, intra-aneurysmal flow pattern, and location of aneurysms were analyzed. Results: Impaction zone from inflow jet was located in the distal neck part of aneurysm with high WSS in 36 aneurysms (76.6%). There were significant differences in WSS between pre-aneurysm surface and near vessel (p<0.001), aneurysm (p<0.001), aneurysm and near vessel (p<0.001). Significant correlations were found between aneurysm WSS and aspect ratio (r=-0.296), aneurysm-artery WSS ratio and size ratio (r=-0.322), aspect ratio (r=-0.416). Conclusion: Uneven WSS distributes in the various part of the pre-aneurysm vessel. The impaction zone from inflow jet is located in the distal neck of aneurysm. Aspect and size ratios can effect aneurysm WSS
Approximating Surface Area Of Fluctuating Lipid Leaflets Using Weighted Grid Tessellation, Ahnaf Siddiqui
Approximating Surface Area Of Fluctuating Lipid Leaflets Using Weighted Grid Tessellation, Ahnaf Siddiqui
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The surface area per lipid is an important quantity useful in characterizing lipid bilayer structure and dynamics. However, simply dividing the flat surface area covered by the number of lipids does not give a sufficient characterization of surface dynamics in cases where parts of the lipid leaflets have curvaceous trajectories in three dimensions. An algorithm is proposed for modeling surface area per lipid using a three-dimensional tessellated grid. In this way both the vertical, as well as the more commonly considered the horizontal, fluctuations of lipids are used to accurately determine the area covered. This algorithm can reveal differences in …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this document is to demonstrate how I use my art making as an active meditation in order to temporarily subvert ego and create a new subjective reality in visual form. The results of my research will provide the reader with the ability to connect existing philosophies of the Yoga Sutras and Jungian Theory with new art works that explore active meditation, neurosis, and the archetypes of the collective psyche. My goal is to reconstruct these concepts into a visual medium that reshapes facts and theories into images of my own truth, giving free play to fantasy akin …
Flocks, Swarms, Crowds, And Societies: On The Scope And Limits Of Cognition, Zachariah A. Neemeh
Flocks, Swarms, Crowds, And Societies: On The Scope And Limits Of Cognition, Zachariah A. Neemeh
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Traditionally, the concept of cognition has been tied to the brain or the nervous system. Recent work in various noncomputational cognitive sciences has enlarged the category of “cognitive phenomena” to include the organism and its environment, distributed cognition across networks of actors, and basic cellular functions. The meaning, scope, and limits of ‘cognition’ are no longer clear or well-defined. In order to properly delimit the purview of the cognitive sciences, there is a strong need for a clarification of the definition of cognition. This paper will consider the outer bounds of that definition. Not all cognitive behaviors of a given …
The Sociocultural Perception Of The African American Woman's Bodily Aesthetics: Investigated In The Works Venus, God Don't Like Ugly, And Their Eyes Were Watching God, Andrene Loiten
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Despite contemporary movements towards tolerance and appreciation of differing cultural entities within the United States, the normative standard of beauty serves as a pinnacle of division amongst women. The normative standard of beauty—implemented by the dominant race within the States—encourages discrimination in regards to the perception of African American female beauty. Although information exists identifying the original influence pertaining to the negative perception of African American female beauty, the reason for its continued perpetuation within the African American community remains ill defined. Effects of this standard amongst African Americans are psychological and physiological. The destruction of self-image and appreciation for …
The Refined Approach To Punishment In Section 11 Of The Charter, Stacey D. Young
The Refined Approach To Punishment In Section 11 Of The Charter, Stacey D. Young
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
In R. v. K.R.J. (“K.R.J.”) the Supreme Court acknowledged what is intuitive but was not explicit in section 11(i) Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (“Charter”) jurisprudence: determining if something is punishment requires consideration of the impact it has on an offender. The critical question in K.R.J. was whether a section 161 Criminal Code (“Code”) prohibition order constituted punishment within the meaning of section 11(i) of the Charter. Section 161(1) orders restrict the liberty interest of convicted sexual offenders who pose an ongoing risk of committing a sexual offence against a child. These orders restrict the ability of offenders to …

Quantifying The Effect Of Pathways On The Distribution Of Cynipid Galls In Florida Pine Flatwood, Christine R. Leonard
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
This study will attempt to add to our collective knowledge of the Cynipid species of southwest Florida, as well as provide evidence to either support or refute the generally held notion that sampling should be done away from any trails or roads. Subsequent studies within similar areas will therefore be better informed as the most accurate sampling methods.
Dna Methylation As A Mechanism For Caste System Determination In Solenopsis Invicta: Do The Genes Determine The Queen?, Kristen E. Walker
Dna Methylation As A Mechanism For Caste System Determination In Solenopsis Invicta: Do The Genes Determine The Queen?, Kristen E. Walker
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
The emerging field of epigenetics seeks to study the interactions of the environment and other factors on gene expression in organisms. Epigenetic mechanisms involve modification to the DNA and/or surrounding structures, resulting in the activation or repression of gene expression. One epigenetic mechanism, DNA methylation, involves the addition of a methyl group to carbon 5 of cytosines in CpG dinucleotide regions in vertebrates and possibly other phyla. Vertebrate genomes tend to be globally methylated, whereas genes tend to be the target of methylation in insects. Genomic analyses of the order Hymenoptera revealed the evolutionary persistence of DNA methylation in social …

Detecting Between-Groups Heteroscedasticity In Moderated Multiple Regression With A Continuous Predictor And A Categorical Moderator: A Monte Carlo Study, Patrick J. Rosopa, Amber N. Schroeder, Jessica L. Doll
Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive
Moderated multiple regression (MMR) is frequently used to test moderation hypotheses in the behavioral and social sciences. In MMR with a categorical moderator, between-groups heteroscedasticity is not uncommon and can inflate Type I error rates or reduce statistical power. Compared with research on remedial procedures that can mitigate the effects of this violated assumption, less research attention has focused on statistical procedures that can be used to detect between-groups heteroscedasticity. In the current article, we briefly review such procedures. Then, using Monte Carlo methods, we compare the performance of various procedures that can be used to detect between-groups heteroscedasticity in …
Representations Of Transgender Murder Victims In Digital U.S. News Media: A Framing Analysis, Karlynd June
Representations Of Transgender Murder Victims In Digital U.S. News Media: A Framing Analysis, Karlynd June
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
Transgender murder victims are routinely mis-identified, misgendered, misrepresented in news media. GLAAD (formerly the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), the main media watchdog for LGBTQ+ rights and advocacy, reports that transgender people, particularly transgender women of color, are disproportionately affected by hate violence and these tragedies are often compounded by reporting that does not respect (or exploits) victims’ gender identity [misgendering] (2016b; June, 2016).
This project is a qualitative framing analysis of digital U.S. news media representations of transgender and non-binary (bn)/gender non-conforming (gnc) murder victims. The framing analysis was informed by a general content analysis of the artifacts. …

Task-Dependent Fluency And Devaluation Of Gender-Ambiguous Faces: The Effects Of Categorization Disfluency On Hireability, Ilona Nemeth
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
The evaluation of faces is an automatic process that involves perceiving facial features. The allocation of attention towards certain facial features can enhance the processing of faces; however, previous research has shown that evaluating ambiguous features makes faces more difficult to process resulting in lower ratings of likability and trustworthiness. Our research tested the extent to which individuals, when primed to focus attention on gender, would experience difficulty in the categorization of faces with ambiguous gender. Further, we examined how cognitive fluency impacted the devaluation of these faces, especially within the context of hireability for genderstereotyped jobs. Our first prediction …

Who Should Manage Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) In The Gulf Of Mexico?A Study Of The Social Dynamics Of The Red Snapper Fishery, Sydney A. Alhale
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
There have been many studies of the biology of red snapper; however, there are few studies addressing the social dynamics of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) red snapper fishery1 and its effect on stock management. The GOM red snapper fishery was in decline from the 1950s through the 1980s from years of rampant overfishing. A rebuilding plan was established in 1984 under the Magnuson-Stevens Act guidelines, placing stringent regulations on red snapper fishing. To successfully rebuild the fishery by 2032, federal seasons and quotas have been shortened to allow the stock to grow. Recreational fishermen have become increasingly unhappy with …

The Role That The Quantity Of Sampling Wells Has On The Groundwater Quality Analysis At The Savannah River Site (Srs), Jerry J. Cantrell
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
Savannah River Plant was created to produce nuclear-weapons materials during the Cold War. After the end of the Cold War, Savannah River Plant has become Savannah River Site (SRS) with emphasis on environmental stewardship. This research serves as baseline data to contribute to a better understanding of the spatial distribution of the background-groundwater system at the SRS. The methods of this study systematically linearize analyte parameters and establishes rank values, weight values, and aggregates the parameters. The aggregation value establishes a means to determine groundwater quality based on the analytes sampled as a comparison to their respectively recognized Environmental Protection …
