Effects Of Moderate Pressure Massage On Self-Regulation And Play In Preterm Babies, Helene Chaya Hendel Jan 2017

Effects Of Moderate Pressure Massage On Self-Regulation And Play In Preterm Babies, Helene Chaya Hendel

Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to examine whether mother-administered moderate pressure massage intervention could improve self-regulation, which would result in improvements in play outcomes. It was posited that a child who is self-regulated may be more successful in his/her play and that moderate pressure massage could be an effective tool to improve self-regulation in preterm infants with decreased self-regulation. Participants in the study were five preterm children ranging from 12 to 18 months corrected age and their mothers. The study utilized an A-B nonconcurrent multiple baselines across subjects design in which each participant acted as his/her own control as …

Narrative Medicine And Health Care Ethics: Religious And Literary Approaches To Patient Identity And Clinical Practice, Tara Flanagan Tracy Jan 2017

Narrative Medicine And Health Care Ethics: Religious And Literary Approaches To Patient Identity And Clinical Practice, Tara Flanagan Tracy

Dissertations

This dissertation examines practices of narrative medicine and moral identity for end-of-life patients, with special attention given to Aristotle's Poetics and the work of Paul Ricoeur. While noting the genuine value of narrative medicine for clinicians, I examine the limits of self-narration for patients who are unable to offer a linear, coherent narrative of their lives due to cognitive deficits such as Alzheimer's disease. Nevertheless, the premise of narrative medicine, that being a close reader of texts can develop the ability to attend closely to patients, remains useful. When the sources used in narrative medicine are expanded to include those …

Social Support And Well-Being Among Foster Care Youth: Self-Concept As A Mediator, Anne Kathleen Fuller Jan 2017

Social Support And Well-Being Among Foster Care Youth: Self-Concept As A Mediator, Anne Kathleen Fuller

Dissertations

Youth in the child welfare system frequently undergo a variety of adverse experiences, including maltreatment, living in poverty, placement changes, school changes, and relationship disruptions. As a group, these youth exhibit poorer psychosocial functioning (e.g., elevated rates of mental health difficulties, poorer social and academic competence) than their peers, yet there is also evidence that a number of youth in foster care are functioning relatively well and can be perceived as demonstrating resilience. The present study examined self-concept as a mediator of hypothesized associations between social support and four domains of psychosocial functioning: internalizing problems, externalizing problems, social competence, and …

Heterocycles Via The Pd-Catalyzed Heterofunctionalization Of Alkylidenecyclopropanes, Phillip Roman Lazzara Jan 2017

Heterocycles Via The Pd-Catalyzed Heterofunctionalization Of Alkylidenecyclopropanes, Phillip Roman Lazzara

Dissertations

Natural compounds are often used as inspiration for novel chemical structures that provide medicinal benefits to human health. The unique 3-dimentional structures of these molecules make the majority of them synthetic challenges for organic chemists. While there is great diversity among these molecules, many of these carbon-based compounds exhibit similar key structural features. One of the most common features amongst biologically active molecules is a rigid carbon ring bearing nitrogen or oxygen atoms, which are known as heterocycles. The structural rigidity of heterocycles helps properly align key interactions of the molecule with those of a specific protein, which causes the …

Sleep-Wake Disturbances In Adolescents With Spina Bifida: Prevalence And Associations With Bio-Neuropsychosocial Functioning, Caitlin Beth Murray Jan 2017

Sleep-Wake Disturbances In Adolescents With Spina Bifida: Prevalence And Associations With Bio-Neuropsychosocial Functioning, Caitlin Beth Murray

Dissertations

Sleep is a critical component of healthy development during adolescence, and when disrupted, has been linked to difficulties with physical status, psychological health, family functioning, neuropsychological symptoms, and academic performance. The overarching goal of this project was to examine sleep-wake disturbances in association with bio-neuropsychosocial functioning in a vulnerable pediatric population of adolescents with spina bifida (SB). Specifically, this study aimed to 1) examine sleep-wake patterns in adolescents with SB using a multimodal sleep assessment, 2) identify daily temporal associations between sleep and pain as well as sleep and mood, and 3) identify the relationship between sleep-wake disturbances and bio-neuropsychosocial …

Characterization Of Quorum-Quenching Lactonases And Plp-Dependent Aminotransferases: Structure, Mechanism And Alternative Turnover, Romila Nina Mascarenhas Jan 2017

Characterization Of Quorum-Quenching Lactonases And Plp-Dependent Aminotransferases: Structure, Mechanism And Alternative Turnover, Romila Nina Mascarenhas

Dissertations

Cell-to-cell communication by bacteria is essential for the regulation of gene expression important in colonization, biofilm formation, virulence and other processes. This communication is called "quorum-sensing" and is mediated by small molecules called autoinducers. One major class of autoinducers used by gram-negative bacteria is N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHL's). Enzymes capable of disrupting this communication are called "quorum-quenching" catalysts and have proven to be invaluable biochemical tools for understanding quorum-sensing pathways. Quorum-quenching enzymes hold promise for application in anti-biofouling, agriculture, aquaculture, bioremediation and other synthetic biology settings. However, the mechanisms that these enzymes use to recognize and process their substrates are …

Husserl And Community, Sean Stephen Petranovich Jan 2017

Husserl And Community, Sean Stephen Petranovich

Dissertations

This dissertation is on Edmund Husserl's concept of personal community. I argue that Husserl's concept of community is based on his formal theory of parts and wholes. More specifically, it is argued that the terms Husserl uses to describe features of community in his later writings are already established early in his philosophical career. The first three chapters of the dissertation focus on Husserl's unique conception of community in general. The final two chapters turn to political communities from a Husserlian standpoint.

In the first chapter, I investigate how Husserl's account of the ontological structure of community is tied to …

Maintaining And Improving Academic Achievement In The Midst Of Significant Demographic Change: A Case Study Analysis, Aaron Raatjes Jan 2017

Maintaining And Improving Academic Achievement In The Midst Of Significant Demographic Change: A Case Study Analysis, Aaron Raatjes

Dissertations

The research of Mei Jiun Wu (2013) indicates that demographic change greater than 1% has significant impact on the achievement performance of school districts. This study analyzes a single district that experienced an average of 1.25% demographic change per year consisting of an increase of non-White students from 2002 to 2015. Despite this compounding change, the district was able to maintain and improve academic achievement. This study utilizes Marzano and Waters' (2009) framework for school leadership as well as Lindsey, Nuri-Robins, and Terrell's (2009) Framework for cultural proficiency to better understand how the district was able to maintain and improve …

The Master And The Midwife: Levinas And Plato On Teaching, Rebecca Glenn Scott Jan 2017

The Master And The Midwife: Levinas And Plato On Teaching, Rebecca Glenn Scott

Dissertations

In this dissertation, I examine the concept of teaching as it appears in the work of Emmanuel Levinas. In particular, I show how Levinas's notion of teaching arises out of both a retrieval and a critique of Platonic thought. On the one hand, Levinas embraces the transcendence of Platonism, but at the same time, he is often quite critical of Socratic education. I argue, contrary to Levinas, that Socratic education is, in fact, consonant with Levinas's philosophy, particularly when we recognize that Levinas's notion of a primordial teaching must involve a relation both with "absolute" alterity and with what he …

Role Of Jagged1 In The Enrichment Of Cancer Stem Cells In Her2+ Breast Cancer, Deep Shah Jan 2017

Role Of Jagged1 In The Enrichment Of Cancer Stem Cells In Her2+ Breast Cancer, Deep Shah

Dissertations

Purpose: Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide. Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2) positive subtype of breast cancer is driven by a subpopulation of cells possessing stem cell properties of self-renewal and differentiation, known as Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs). CSCs are implicated in tumor growth as well as radiotherapy and chemotherapy associated resistance. Notch receptors promote breast CSCs survival and self-renewal, and overexpression of Notch ligand Jagged1 predicts poor prognosis. We showed previously that Notch could be an important target in trastuzumab/lapatinib resistant HER2+ breast cancer.

Experimental Design: Here, we sought to …

Does Dietary Melatonin Play A Role In Bone Mineralization?, Martha Renee Wasserbauer Jan 2017

Does Dietary Melatonin Play A Role In Bone Mineralization?, Martha Renee Wasserbauer

Theses - ALL

Introduction: Melatonin is generated as a product of normal circadian rhythm and is also is thought to play an important role in maintaining bone mineral density (BMD) by reducing chronic inflammation. Postmenopausal women are at an elevated risk of BMD loss due to declining estrogen and a natural decrease in melatonin synthesis with increasing age. Endogenous melatonin production is largely influenced by exposure to external light cues, but recent research has indicated that serum melatonin may be increased by the consumption of melatonin-rich foods. The purpose of this study was to quantify dietary-derived melatonin and examine its effects on inflammation, …

Development Of A Localized Electrochemical Properties Test Method: A Study Of Cocrmo And Ti Alloy Localized Electrochemical Behavior, Sile Hu Jan 2017

Development Of A Localized Electrochemical Properties Test Method: A Study Of Cocrmo And Ti Alloy Localized Electrochemical Behavior, Sile Hu

Theses - ALL

Abstract: Corrosion of metallic biomaterials in biomedically-relevant environments depends on the local physical and chemical structure of the metal surface at the metal-solution interface, and the geometry of the electrode system. Local surface structure, including defects, inclusions, and grain boundaries may locally alter the electrode behavior, while local geometries, including crevice-like geometries or small electrode areas will give rise to specific changes in electrochemical behavior. Methods to detect local defects or surface flaws electrochemically may be possible with the appropriate combination of microelectrodes and pipette geometries. In order to have a better understanding of the localized electrochemical behavior under given …

The Romantic Baby Boomer: A Successful Aging Analysis Of Romantic Comedy Film Trailers, Annette Marie Schelling Masterson Jan 2017

The Romantic Baby Boomer: A Successful Aging Analysis Of Romantic Comedy Film Trailers, Annette Marie Schelling Masterson

Theses - ALL

On any given Friday night, theaters across the United States are filled with teenagers and young adults, often to see the new Blockbuster that has just been released. The film industry has responded by producing content specifically targeted to this demographic. Unfortunately, this has left a major portion of the population waiting for material that is relatable. Even when there is a character over the age of 50, they are regularly for comic relief or portrayed as weak and incapable. The recent trend of romantic comedies incorporating storylines for older adults is still underrepresented in academic research. This thesis set …

Changes In The Size Structure Of Marine Fish Communities, Richard J. Bell, Jeremy Collie, Trevor A. Branch, Michael J. Fogarty, Coilin Minto, Daniel Ricard

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Marine ecosystems have been heavily impacted by fishing pressure, which can cause major changes in the structure of communities. Fishing directly removes biomass and causes secondary effects such as changing predatory and competitive interactions and altering energy pathways, all of which affect the functional groups and size distributions of marine ecosystems. We conducted a meta-analysis of eighteen trawl surveys from around the world to identify if there have been consistent changes in size-structure and life history groups across ecosystems. Declining biomass trends for larger fish and invertebrates were present in nine systems, all in the North Atlantic, while seven ecosystems …

From Playgrounds To Plavix: Civil Cases In The Supreme Court’S October 2016 Term, Todd E. Pettys

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

During the Supreme Court’s October 2016 Term, news relating to Donald Trump’s rise to the presidency— including his successful nomination of Neil Gorsuch to fill the vacancy created by Justice Antonin Scalia’s death more than one politically eventful year earlier—frequently overshadowed news of the Court’s rulings. The Court itself contributed to that redirection of the nation’s attention: it decided more than 30 fewer cases than its recent average, and it achieved unanimity at an unusually high rate.1 With 68% of the Court’s rulings falling on the civil side of the ledger,2 however, we have much here to discuss, with significant …

R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Transgender Pronoun Preference And The Application Of The Model Code Of Judicial Conduct, Francesco G. Salpietro

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Amnesty International—a civil-rights organization that “work[s] to protect people wherever justice, freedom, [and] truth . . . [have been] denied”1—put it best in its mission statement: “We all have a sexual orientation and a gender identity, and this shared fact means that discrimination against members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual[,] and Transgender community, based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity, is an issue that transcends that community and affects all of us.”2 Fundamental to this communal conception are notions of dignity and respect, both of which are to be enjoyed by all people of all backgrounds. When transgender individuals litigate …

The history of glaciations on Southern Hemisphere sub-polar islands is unclear. Debate surrounds the extent and timing of the last glacial advance and termination on sub-Antarctic South Georgia in particular. Here, using sea-floor geophysical data and marine sediment cores, we resolve the record of glaciation offshore of South Georgia through the transition from the Last Glacial Maximum to Holocene. We show a sea-bed landform imprint of a shelf-wide last glacial advance and progressive deglaciation. Renewed glacier resurgence in the fjords between c. 15,170 and 13,340 yr ago coincided with a period of cooler, wetter climate known as the Antarctic Cold …

Precise knowledge about the extent of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; c. 26.5–19 cal. ka BP) is important in order to 1) improve paleo-ice sheet reconstructions, 2) provide a robust empirical framework for calibrating paleo-ice sheet models, and 3) locate potential shelf refugia for Antarctic benthos during the last glacial period. However, reliable reconstructions are still lacking for many WAIS sectors, particularly for key areas on the outer continental shelf, where the LGM-ice sheet is assumed to have terminated. In many areas of the outer continental shelf around Antarctica, direct geological data for …

Development Of A Conditionally-Attenuated Cytomegalovirus (Cmv) Vaccine Vector Platform, And Initial Investigations Into Use Of Cmv As A Vaccine Against Pandemic Influenza A Virus, Shirin Hama Salih

School of Biomedical Sciences Theses

Abstract Cytomegalovirus (CMV)-based vectors are a promising vaccine platform with an ability to induce high levels of durable, immediate, effector memory T (TEM) cell responses against their heterologous encoded pathogen target antigen. The primary focus of this thesis is centered on a hypothesis that targeting of essential CMV tegument proteins by using regulatable protein-destabilization is suitable as a conditional vaccine attenuation strategy. CMVs are generally benign, however in individuals whose immune systems are immature or weakened, CMV can be a significant pathogen causing substantial morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have shown that replication-defective versions of CMV made by conventional permanent …

Stable And Radiocarbon Isotopic Composition Of Dissolved Organic Matter In The Gulf Of Mexico, B. D. Walker, E. R. M. Druffel, J. Kolasinski, B. J. Roberts, X. Xu, B. E. Rosenheim

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is of primary importance to marine ecosystems and the global carbon cycle. Stable carbon (δ13C) and radiocarbon (Δ14C) isotopic measurements are powerful tools for evaluating DOC sources and cycling. However, the isotopic signature of DOC in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) remains almost completely unknown. Here we present the first DOC Δ14C and δ13C depth profiles from the GOM. Our results suggest the Mississippi River exports large amounts of DOC with an anthropogenic “bomb” Δ14C signature. Riverine DOC is removed and recycled offshore, and some marine …

Understanding how microbiomes affect host resistance, parasite virulence, and parasite-associated diseases requires a collaborative effort between parasitologists, microbial ecologists, virologists, and immunologists. We hereby propose the Parasite Microbiome Project to bring together researchers with complementary expertise and to study the role of microbes in host-parasite interactions. Data from the Parasite Microbiome Project will help identify the mechanisms driving microbiome variation in parasites and infected hosts and how that variation is associated with the ecology and evolution of parasites and their disease outcomes. This is a call to arms to prevent fragmented research endeavors, encourage best practices in experimental approaches, and …
