This Amazing Place Where The Sea Meets The Land, Melinda Donnelly, Linda Walters, Joshua Sacks
CEELAB Children's Books
In this book we tell you about the plants and animals that depend on coastal shorelines. We, as humans, need to protect this fragile habitat as we depend on many of these species for our food, our recreation, and to protect our shorelines from washing away.
The Vegetation And Flora Of Edwards Air Force Base, Western Mojave Desert, California, David Charlton, Philip W. Rundel
The Vegetation And Flora Of Edwards Air Force Base, Western Mojave Desert, California, David Charlton, Philip W. Rundel
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Edwards Air Force Base extends over 121,000 ha in the Antelope Valley of the western Mojave Desert, with much of the area part of a closed endorheic basin that held the Pleistocene Lake Thompson. Notable topographic features are Rogers, Rosamond and Buckhorn dry lakes, while rounded domes and scattered hills are present to the north and east. Elevation gradients are limited, ranging from a low of 690 m to 1044 m near the eastern margin. Diverse communities of saltbush scrub dominate the lower plains, while creosote bush scrub and Joshua tree woodlands are present away from the old lake basin. …
Conflicts And Laudato Si’: Ten Principles For Environmental Dispute Resolution, Lucia A. Silecchia
Conflicts And Laudato Si’: Ten Principles For Environmental Dispute Resolution, Lucia A. Silecchia
Scholarly Articles
Unfortunately, conflicts are all too familiar in the modern world. Global conflicts claim and threaten the lives of many. Personal conflicts strike at the heart of families and friendships. Courts, workplaces, communities, the political process, mediating institutions, businesses, and media all seem fraught with conflicts that can unnecessarily divide rather than unite.
Without a doubt, there is a certain amount of conflict that is helpful, and even vitally necessary, to any society. Without it, there is no healthy debate about things that matter, a diminished ability to reach compromises that may represent the best of competing ideas, and less opportunity …
Slowing The Evolution And Outbreak Of Antibiotic Resistance, Connie Okasaki
Slowing The Evolution And Outbreak Of Antibiotic Resistance, Connie Okasaki
HMC Senior Theses
Antibiotic resistance is a problem of significant and growing international concern, in part due to the rapid evolution of new resistances. One potentially important factor in the emergence of resistance is concentrated antibiotic use in environments such as hospitals. Such high use creates a strong selective pressure for pathogens to evolve resistance. We analyze some strategies hospitals can use to slow the evolution of resistance, and estimate the length of the delay between evolution and outbreak of resistance.
Diversity And Uniformity In International Arbitration Law, Christopher R. Drahozal
Diversity And Uniformity In International Arbitration Law, Christopher R. Drahozal
Emory International Law Review
The leading instruments of international arbitration law'the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards (New York Convention) and the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration'both are widely touted for the uniformity they have brought to arbitration law, and commentators continue to urge more uniformity rather than less when proposing reforms to international arbitration law. This Essay argues for greater openness to the benefits of diversity in the legal rules that govern international arbitration. The easy benefits of uniformity have already been obtained, meaning that the marginal benefits of greater uniformity are more limited. At the same …
Exploring The Trans-Pacific Partnership's Complexities Through The Lens Of Its Intellectual Property Rights Chapter, Max Rubinson
Exploring The Trans-Pacific Partnership's Complexities Through The Lens Of Its Intellectual Property Rights Chapter, Max Rubinson
Emory International Law Review
Analysis of the Trans-Pacific Partnership's (TPP) intellectual property rights chapter indicates that the final text of the agreement is the result of legitimate compromise. Thus, concerns over the procedural dynamics of negotiating such an agreement may be somewhat overblown. Moreover, concerns over substantive aspects of the TPP may also be somewhat unfounded, as the TPP establishes a sensible regulatory regime for pharmaceutical products, providing strong incentives to innovate while safeguarding access to affordable medicines. Additionally, the TPP provides the United States with access to foreign markets, labor, and investment opportunities. Thus, Democrats and Republicans in both chambers of Congress should …

Beta-amyloid (Aβ) immunotherapy is a promising intervention to slow Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Aging dogs naturally accumulate Aβ and show cognitive decline. An active vaccine against fibrillar Aβ 1–42 (VAC) in aged beagles resulted in maintenance but not improvement of cognition along with reduced brain Aβ. Behavioral enrichment (ENR) led to cognitive benefits but no reduction in Aβ. We hypothesized cognitive outcomes could be improved by combining VAC with ENR in aged dogs. Aged dogs (11–12 years) were placed into 4 groups: (1) control/control (C/C); (2) control/VAC (C/V); (3) ENR/control (E/C); (4) ENR and VAC (E/V) and treated for 20 months. …

Animal Law In A Changing (And Challenging) Political Climate: One Professor's Musings After 100 Days Of The Trump Administration, Kathy Hessler
Animal Law Review
This Introduction discusses the current political climate following the presidential inauguration of Donald J. Trump, with a focus on Trump's first 100 days in office and what his actions entail for animal advocates as well as for the field of animal law. The Introduction approaches the Trump presidency through a historical and practical lens, then scrutinizes the Trump administration's actions through its first 100 days. Following this analysis, the Introduction turns to the considerable number of voices that have risen in response to the President's initiatives and to those of his party. This Introduction concludes by emphasizing the need for …
Red Wolf Coalition V. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission: Better Red Than Dead, Edward A. Fitzgerald
Red Wolf Coalition V. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission: Better Red Than Dead, Edward A. Fitzgerald
Animal Law Review
This Article demonstrates how federal district court decisions have protected the threatened red wolf. The history of red wolf introduction and the Fourth Circuit decision in Gibbs v. Babbitt are reviewed. In 2012, North Carolina allowed coyote hunting in the red wolf recovery area. The District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina correctly issued an injunction stopping the action. The court held North Carolina set in motion events that led to the killing of red wolves and violated federal regulations regarding the taking of red wolves. The resulting settlement agreement precluded state interference with red wolf recovery. Genetic …

This Article offers an overview and evaluation of Taiwan's and China's draft laws for protecting animals, which were drafted by countries that have not experienced comprehensive animal welfare movements. The Article focuses on interpreting the statutory offenses for cruelty and animal welfare infringements, and the problems and deficiencies of the draft laws' substance and enforcement mechanisms-the most critical factors affecting the effectiveness of the animal protection legislation.
Menageries Multiple: An Introduction To Zoological Multiplicity In The Modern American Zoo, Emily D. Gratke
Menageries Multiple: An Introduction To Zoological Multiplicity In The Modern American Zoo, Emily D. Gratke
Scripps Senior Theses
American zoological parks have been sites of intense consumer and scholar interest since their origination in the 20th century. Today, zoos reside at a tenacious hub of ideologies, practices, and priorities contributed to by various stakeholder groups. I propose that the foundational cause of this tension is zoological multiplicity: the theory that through human practices and perceptions, animals can embody multiple identities. Via an exploration of zoological multiplicity in American zoos with specific focus on zoo management, zoogoer, and animal activist stakeholder groups, this project proposes the widespread acknowledgment and understanding of zoological multiplicity as a method to improve animal …

A Dearth Of Kindness: Using Buddhist Psychology To Evaluate Rawls, Nozick, And Contemporary Corporate Ideology, James G. Wilson
A Dearth Of Kindness: Using Buddhist Psychology To Evaluate Rawls, Nozick, And Contemporary Corporate Ideology, James G. Wilson
Western New England Law Review
American philosophers John Rawls and Robert Nozick’s pathbreaking books establishes enduring parameters for mainstream political and legal discourse. While polarity is often exaggerated, Democrats invoke Rawls’s extension of the New Deal in A Theory of Justice while Republicans gravitate towards Nozick’s libertarianism in Anarchy, State, and Utopia. This Article argues that both approaches are valuable but incomplete. Neither philosopher could foresee the corrosion of republican norms and crippling of the middle class from centralized private power. The problem extends beyond material and political problems to spiritual issue of kindness. Because neither philosopher adequately incorporate benevolence into their visions, they fail …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) and the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) are among the main pests of maize. Both species exhibit cannibalistic behavior and quite often share the same feeding guild in maize (maize ears), which can result in several interspecific and intraspecific interactions. Paired interaction scenarios of intraspecific and interspecific larvae were assessed in arenas in the presence and absence of food to characterize movements resulting from interactions of these insects. There was a difference in the frequency of behavioral movements in all the interactions, except for S. frugiperda in the presence of food. …
Using Natural Products To Treat Resistant And Persistent Bacterial Infections, Robert W. Deering
Using Natural Products To Treat Resistant And Persistent Bacterial Infections, Robert W. Deering
Open Access Dissertations
Antimicrobial resistance is a growing threat to human health both worldwide and in the United States. Most concerning is the emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens, especially the ‘ESKAPE’ pathogens for which treatment options are dwindling. To complicate the problem, approvals of antibiotic drugs are extremely low and many research and development efforts in the pharmaceutical industry have ceased, leaving little certainty that critical new antibiotics are nearing the clinic. New antibiotics are needed to continue treating these evolving infections. In addition to antibiotics, approaches that aim to inhibit or prevent antimicrobial resistance could be useful. Also, studies that …

Biological Process: Characterization, Establishment Of Shelf Life And Optimizing Method Transfers, Syama S. Adhibhatta
Open Access Dissertations
Biological processes are complex and can be modeled using combination of linear and non-linear models. During the cell culture process, cells may change or evolve and it is extremely important to understand the variability of the process to manufacture consistent product. In order to maximize the output from the process, process parameters need to be characterized and optimized. Data from process involves linear and non-linear patterns and some of the parameters are auto-correlated. One of the objectives of study was to compare Unsupervised Dimesional Reduction methods to Supervised machine learning algorithms applied to biopharmaceutical manufacturing process data and suggest a …
Simplexity: Plain Language And The Tax Law, Joshua D. Blank, Leigh Osofsky
Simplexity: Plain Language And The Tax Law, Joshua D. Blank, Leigh Osofsky
Articles
In recent years, federal government agencies have increasingly attempted to use plain language in written communications with the public. The Plain Writing Act of 2010, for instance, requires agencies to incorporate "clear and simple" explanations of rules and regulations into their official publications. In the tax context, as part of its "customer service" mission, the Internal Revenue Service bears a "duty to explain" the tax law to hundreds of millions of taxpayers who file tax returns each year. Proponents of the plain language movement have heralded this form of communication as leading to simplicity in tax compliance, more equitable access …

Amitraz And Its Metabolite Modulate Honey Bee Cardiac Function And Tolerance To Viral Infection, Scott T. O'Neal, Carlyle C. Brewster, Jeffrey R. Bloomquist, Troy D. Anderson
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The health and survival of managed honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies are affected by multiple factors, one of the most important being the interaction between viral pathogens and infestations of the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor. Currently, the only effective strategy available for mitigating the impact of viral infections is the chemical control of mite populations. Unfortunately, the use of in-hive acaricides comes at a price, as they can produce sublethal effects that are difficult to quantify, but may ultimately be as damaging as the mites they are used to treat. The goal of this study was to …
Effects Of Neonicotinoid Imidacloprid Exposure On Bumble Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Queen Survival And Nest Initiation, Judy Wu-Smart, Marla Spivak
Effects Of Neonicotinoid Imidacloprid Exposure On Bumble Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Queen Survival And Nest Initiation, Judy Wu-Smart, Marla Spivak
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Neonicotinoids are highly toxic to insects and may systemically translocate to nectar and pollen of plants where foraging bees may become exposed. Exposure to neonicotinoids can induce detrimental sublethal effects on individual and colonies of bees and may have long-term impacts, such as impaired foraging, reduced longevity, and reduced brood care or production. Less well-studied are the potential effects on queen bumble bees that may become exposed while foraging in the spring during colony initiation. This study assessed queen survival and nest founding in caged bumble bees [Bombus impatiens (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Apidae)] after chronic (18-d) dietary exposure of imidacloprid …
The French Veil Ban: A Transnational Legal Feminist Approach, Sital Kalantry
The French Veil Ban: A Transnational Legal Feminist Approach, Sital Kalantry
University of Baltimore Law Review
After the gruesome terrorist attack that killed eighty-four people in Nice, many beach towns in France began to ban Muslim women from wearing the “burkini” on beaches. The burkini, which was created by an Australian designer, is modest swimwear that covers the body and hair. The Nice attack occurred on the heels of a series of attacks in France. The timing of the French burkini ban suggests it was targeting Muslims due to the anger over the attacks. The argument that burkinis are not hygienic is a fig leaf for other more pernicious justifications. Others argue that religious garb generally …

Western Australian grain production and industry value has quadrupled over the past 30 years, despite declining winter rainfall, more frost and high temperature events, acidifying soils and increasing input costs. Strong evidence links this productivity growth to R&D that has delivered genetically superior varieties, better agronomic practices and more reliable farming systems. Western Australian grain growers are innovators that rapidly adopt new technology which is increasingly sourced from a wider pool of national and global science, research and innovation. Continuing to push the productivity frontier is not only critical to grower’s profitability, it underpins the international competitiveness of our exports …
A Novel Hybrid Approach Based On A Chaotic Cloud Gravitational Search Algorithm To Complicated Image Template Matching, Weijia Cui, Yuzhu He
A Novel Hybrid Approach Based On A Chaotic Cloud Gravitational Search Algorithm To Complicated Image Template Matching, Weijia Cui, Yuzhu He
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Template matching is the process of accurately extracting the interesting regions in a source image according to reference templates. In this paper, the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is employed as a novel search strategy for template matching. However, the basic GSA is easily trapped in a local optimum and has a poor exploitation ability. In this paper, to enhance the optimization performance of GSA, a novel cross-search strategy based on chaotic global search (CGS) and cloud local search (CLS) is incorporated into GSA. The new variant is named chaotic cloud GSA (CCGSA). CGS makes full use of the ergodicity of …

Our primary goal as honors administrators is to deliver the highestquality honors education we can at our institutions; however, this has become more of a challenge since budgets at state-supported institutions have decreased dramatically over the last decade, a situation that Richard Badenhausen characterizes as the new normal. Although he paints a gloomy picture, Badenhausen also suggests that “[m]oney is always sloshing around in the institutional coffers. . . . You just need to know whom and how to ask . . .” (20). As Samuel Schuman wrote in 2006, we learn early in our honors administrative careers that a …

Moving Foward With Family Centered-Care: One Step At A Time, Adrianne Nicole Dunbar
UReCA: The NCHC Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity
Family-centered care is an evolving process between patients, families, and health care providers. The family centered care model emphasizes the strength families bring to the healing process. The research project was a quasi-experimental pre-and post-test study with a communication intervention phase. The study was conducted in a Surgical-Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU) in a university affiliated hospital in the Southeast with restricted visitation hours. The purpose of this IRB-approved study was to measure the nurses’ perceptions of communication involvement with family members before and after the intervention phase. Approximately 50% of eligible participants responded. The communication intervention phase consisted of …
Evolutionary Explanation For Invasive Abilities Of Centaurea Stoebe (Spotted Knapweed) In Introduced Areas Invasion And Its Effects On Biodiversity In Native Areas, Erin Koren
UReCA: The NCHC Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity
Exotic species are those which have been dispersed, either by chance or human action, to an environment outside of their native range. Only a small portion of these exotics are able to become well established in the invaded population and even expand beyond it. The ones that can are termed invasive species (Muller-Scharer, Schaffner & Steinger, 2004; Bais et al., 2003). Broz et al. (2007) estimates that 25,000 species of invasive plants are in the U.S. invading 700,000 hectares of United States wildlife habitat per year and tallies the economic burden of invasive plant species to be around $35 billion …
