Student Perspectives On Daily Learning Targets, Kai Sill Jan 2017

Student Perspectives On Daily Learning Targets, Kai Sill

Theses and Graduate Projects

Content standards, most often provided by a local, state, or federal governing body, guide schools and teachers through essential knowledge and skills students need to master during the course of their education. Teachers use content standards to drive both instruction, assessment, and to help define a level of proficient achievement. Yet, how often do we explicitly define and present to students exactly the goals of our instruction and our perforrnance expectations? Educational standards arose initially in response to the 1983, "A Nation at Risk," report which found that high school curricula was not adequately preparing students for either vocational or …

Middle School Students' Perspectives On What Teaching Strategies Work Best For Them, Michelle E. Bjorklund Jan 2017

Middle School Students' Perspectives On What Teaching Strategies Work Best For Them, Michelle E. Bjorklund

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study attempts to shed a light on the perspectives of middle school students on their middle school experience. This qualitative study was conducted with 18 middle school students located in the small, rural town in the northern part of the mid-west. Data showed that students want choices and options in their learning. Furthermore, they want to work with their peers in an active, comfortable, fun space. What this space looks like may differ for each student, which is why trust and an open line of communication between the student and teacher is key. They want to know that their …

Hepatitis C Virus-Associated Aortitis Caused By Type I Cryoglobulins, Adrienne Lenhart, Alireza Meighani, Mona Hassan, Stuart C. Gordon

Gastroenterology Articles

Chronic hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) can present with cryoglobulinemic vasculitis, which is primarily associated with type II/III cryoglobulins. Type I cryoglobulins are usually seen in lymphoproliferative disease, and large vessel involvement with this type of vasculitis is rare. A 70-year-old man with chronic HCV presented with abdominal pain, leukocytosis, and rash. Computed tomography angiography showed thickening of the abdominal aorta consistent with large-vessel vasculitis. He was found to have type I cryoglobulinemia and was treated with corticosteroids and ledipasvir/sofosbuvir with rapid resolution of his aortitis. This case emphasizes the need to recognize HCV as a potential etiology of large-vessel …

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

The genus Dichaetophora Duda comprises 61 described species classified into four species groups: agbo, tenuicauda, acutissima and sinensis. This genus is distributed exclusively in the Old World, and is rich in species in the tropical and subtropical areas of the Oriental, Australasian, and Afrotropical regions. In this paper, a new species group, the trilobita group, is established for six new species discovered from the Oriental region. The delimitation of these species is firstly performed in light of morphology and further with the aid of DNA sequences of the mitochondrial COI and COII (cytochrome c oxydase, subunits I and II, respectively) …

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts of the roots of Piper sarmentosum Roxb. were screened for toxicity towards Sitophilus oryzae (L.), Rhyzopertha Dominica (F.), and Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) and the hexane extract exhibited the highest mortality percentage. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the hexane extract resulted in the isolation of asaricin 1, isoasarone 2, and trans-asarone 3. Asaricin 1 and isoasarone 2 were the most toxic compounds to Sitophilus oryzae, Rhyzopertha Dominica, and Plodia interpunctella. Sitophilus oryzae and Rhyzopertha Dominica exposed to asaricin 1 and isoasarone 2 required the lowest median lethal time. Insecticidal activity of trans-asarone 3 showed consistent toxicity throughout the …

Domestic Violence And Parental Substance Misuse In Child Welfare-Involved Families, Bryan Gary Victor Jan 2017

Domestic Violence And Parental Substance Misuse In Child Welfare-Involved Families, Bryan Gary Victor

Wayne State University Dissertations

Child welfare worker routinely screen for domestic violence and parental substance misuse given their association with child maltreatment and poorer foster care outcomes such as lower rates of family reunification and higher rates of system reentry. Although childhood exposure to either domestic violence or parental substance misuse in and of itself does not constitute maltreatment in most child welfare systems, workers may consider these factors in their decision-making and service planning when identified. A set of three studies are therefore presented here that sought to determine the impact of caseworker-identified domestic violence and substance misuse on decision-making and service planning …

Human papilloma virus positive (HPV+) tumors represent a large proportion of anal, vulvar, vaginal, cervical and head and neck squamous carcinomas (HNSCC) and late stage invasive disease is thought to originate from a premalignant state. Cyclic dinucleotides that activate STimulator of INterferon Genes (STING) have been shown to cause rapid regression of a range of advanced tumors. We aimed to investigate STING ligands as a novel treatment for papilloma. We tested therapies in a spontaneous mouse model of papilloma of the face and anogenital region that histologically resembles human HPV-associated papilloma. We demonstrate that STING ligands cause rapid regression of …

The Cosmological Liveliness Of Terril Calder's The Lodge: Animating Our Relations And Unsettling Our Cinematic Spaces, Salma Monani

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

I first saw Métis artist Terril Calder's 2014 stop-frame feature, The Lodge, an independently made, relatively small- budget film, at its premiere at the ImagineNative Film + Media Arts festival, held annually in Toronto, Canada. The feature-length animation played to a full house at the Light-box Theater downtown. Many were there to attend the five-day festival, which is dedicated to Indigenous media made by and for Indigenous people. Others were there because as members of Toronto's general public they wanted to catch a movie during a night out in the city. Since then The Lodge has shown at various other …

Recent Development: Smallwood V. State: A Writ Of Actual Innocence Is Not Available To Convicted Defendants Who Are Guilty Of Their Crime, Even If They Are Deemed Not Criminally Responsible, Andrew Siske

University of Baltimore Law Forum

The Court of Appeals of Maryland held that convicted defendants must allege that they did not actually commit the crime resulting in their conviction to be eligible to petition for a writ of actual innocence under section 8-301 of Criminal Procedure Article of the Maryland Code. Smallwood v. State, 451 Md. 290, 323, 152 A.3d 776, 795 (2017). Additionally, the court ruled that a claim of not criminally responsible is not equivalent to an assertion of actual innocence as required by the court's interpretation of the actual innocence statute. Id.

Dameron Smallwood ("Smallwood") was physically and verbally abused by his …

Permafrost Organic Carbon Mobilization From The Watershed To The Colville River Delta: Evidence From 14C Ramped Pyrolysis And Lignin Biomarkers, Xiaowen Zhang, Thomas S. Bianchi, Xingqian Cui, Brad E. Rosenheim, Chien-Lu Ping, Andrea J. M. Hanna, Mikhail Kanevskiy, Kathryn M. Schreiner, Mead A. Allison

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The deposition of terrestrial-derived permafrost particulate organic carbon (POC) has been recorded in major Arctic river deltas. However, associated transport pathways of permafrost POC from the watershed to the coast have not been well constrained. Here we utilized a combination of ramped pyrolysis-oxidation radiocarbon analysis (RPO 14C) along with lignin biomarkers, to track the linkages between soils and river and delta sediments. Surface and deep soils showed distinct RPO thermographs which may be related to degradation and organo-mineral interaction. Soil material in the bed load of the river channel was mostly derived from deep old permafrost. Both surface and …
