Objective
To identify changes in skeletal muscle microRNA expression after endurance exercise and associate the identified microRNAs with mRNA and protein expression to disease-specific pathways in polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM) patients.
Methods
Following a parallel clinical trial design, patients with probable PM or DM, exercising less than once a week, and on stable medication for at least one month were randomized into two groups at Karolinska University Hospital: a 12-week endurance exercise group (n = 12) or a non-exercised control group (n = 11). Using an Affymetrix microarray, microRNA expression was determined in paired muscle biopsies taken before and …

The loss and recovery of muscle mass and function following injury and during rehabilitation varies among individuals. While recent expression profiling studies have illustrated transcriptomic responses to muscle disuse and remodeling, how these changes contribute to the physiological responses are not clear. In this study, we quantified the effects of immobilization and subsequent rehabilitation training on muscle size and identified molecular pathways associated with muscle responsiveness in an orthopaedic patient cohort study. The injured leg of 16 individuals with ankle injury was immobilized for a minimum of 4 weeks, followed by a 6-week rehabilitation program. The maximal cross-sectional area (CSA) …

This paper describes a new combined impedance plethysmographic (IPG) and electrical bioimpedance spectroscopic (BIS) instrument and software that allows noninvasive real-time measurement of segmental blood flow and changes in intracellular, interstitial, and intravascular volumes during various fluid management procedures. The impedance device can be operated either as a fixed frequency IPG for the quantification of segmental blood flow and hemodynamics or as a multi-frequency BIS for the recording of intracellular and extracellular resistances at 40 discrete input frequencies. The extracellular volume is then deconvoluted to obtain its intra-vascular and interstitial component volumes as functions of elapsed time. The purpose of …

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent, inflammatory disease of apocrine gland-bearing skin which affects approximately 1–4% of the population. The disease is more common in women and patients of African American descent and approximately one-third of patients report a family history. Obesity and smoking are known risk factors, but associations with other immune disorders, especially inflammatory bowel disease, are also recognized. The pathogenesis of HS is poorly understood and host innate or adaptive immune response, defective keratinocyte function, and the microbial environment in the hair follicle and apocrine gland have all been postulated to play a role in disease …

Clinical Practice Points. Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and highly aggressive variant of diffuse large B cell lymphoma with median survival of advanced stage patients varying between 6 and 15 months in previous reports. We report here a human immunodeficiency virus-infected patient surviving over 12 years following treatment for advanced PBL with EPOCH chemotherapy and intrathecal therapy. This case highlights the potential for improved survival in PBL with intensive chemotherapy. Further, literature review suggests promising prospects utilizing novel targeted therapies to increase the rate of prolonged responses.

The plasma membrane-associated tyrosine phosphatase PTPRO is frequently transcriptionally repressed in cancers and signifies poor prognosis of breast cancer patients. In this study, deletion of Ptpro inMMTV-Erbb2 transgenic mice dramatically shortened the mammary tumor latency and accelerated tumor growth due to loss of Ptpro within the breast cancer cells but not in surrounding tissue as confirmed by hetero-transplantation studies. Both in vitro and in vivo data demonstrated that the phosphatase activity was required for the inactivation of ERBB2 and its downstream signaling. PTPRO regulated the phosphorylation status of ERBB2 at Y1248. Co-immunoprecipitation and proximity ligation assay (Duolink) indicated that …

Little information exists on the occurrence and the ultimate fate of pharmaceuticals in the water bodies in India despite being one of the world leaders in pharmaceutical production and consumption. This paper has reviewed 19 published reports of pharmaceutical occurrence in the aquatic environment in India [conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment plants (WTPs), hospital WTPs, rivers, and groundwater]. Carbamazepine (antipsychoactive), atenolol (antihypertensive), triclocarban and triclosan (antimicrobials), trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole (antibacterials), ibuprofen and acetaminophen (analgesics), and caffeine (stimulant) are the most commonly detected at higher concentrations in Indian WTPs that treat predominantly the domestic sewage. The concentration of ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, amoxicillin, …

Probabilistic And More General Uncertainty-Based (E.G., Fuzzy) Approaches To Crisp Clustering Explain The Empirical Success Of The K-Sets Algorithm, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Shahnaz Shahbazova, Songsak Sriboonchitta
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Recently, a new empirically successful algorithm was proposed for crisp clustering: the K-sets algorithm. In this paper, we show that a natural uncertainty-based formalization of what is clustering automatically leads to the mathematical ideas and definitions behind this algorithm. Thus, we provide an explanation for this algorithm's empirical success.

A Radial Basis Function (Rbf) Compact Finite Difference (Fd) Scheme For Reaction-Diffusion Equations On Surfaces, Erik Lehto, Varun Shankar, Grady B. Wright
A Radial Basis Function (Rbf) Compact Finite Difference (Fd) Scheme For Reaction-Diffusion Equations On Surfaces, Erik Lehto, Varun Shankar, Grady B. Wright
Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We present a new high-order, local meshfree method for numerically solving reaction diffusion equations on smooth surfaces of codimension 1 embedded in ℝd. The novelty of the method is in the approximation of the Laplace-Beltrami operator for a given surface using Hermite radial basis function (RBF) interpolation over local node sets on the surface. This leads to compact (or implicit) RBF generated finite difference (RBF-FD) formulas for the Laplace-Beltrami operator, which gives rise to sparse differentiation matrices. The method only requires a set of (scattered) nodes on the surface and an approximation to the surface normal vectors at …

The Law And Big Data, Caryn Devins, Teppo Felin, Stuart Kauffman, Roger Koppl
Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy
In this Article we critically examine the use of Big Data in the legal system. Big Data is driving a trend towards behavioral optimization and "personalized law," in which legal decisions and rules are optimized for best outcomes and where law is tailored to individual consumers based on analysis of past data. Big Data, however, has serious limitations and dangers when applied in the legal context. Advocates of Big Data make theoretically problematic assumptions about the objectivity of data and scientific observation. Law is always theory-laden. Although Big Data strives to be objective, law and data have multiple possible meanings …
Transcendent Mind, Emergent Universe In The Thought Of Michael Polanyi, Vincent Smiles
Transcendent Mind, Emergent Universe In The Thought Of Michael Polanyi, Vincent Smiles
Theology Faculty Publications
This essay vindicates two major aspects of the science-based philosophy of Michael Polanyi: 1. His concept of tacit knowing, and 2. His concept of the multi-levelled character of reality. These two notions relate closely with one another, and together support the thesis to be argued here, that when it comes to understanding human beings, and most especially the human mind, science and religion have to meet on the common ground of the transcendent capacities of human beings, which are pointers to the transcendent character of the universe. The mind is an emergent of the universe, as are all of its …

The Impact Of Globalization On The Perceptions And Practices Of Menstruation Among Indigenous Women In Peru, Meghan Wallace
The Impact Of Globalization On The Perceptions And Practices Of Menstruation Among Indigenous Women In Peru, Meghan Wallace
Honors Program Theses
The existing perceptions and practices of menstruation on the island of Taquile in Lake Titicaca, Peru provide insights into the manners in which globalization can challenge and shape perspectives in indigenous communities. Through the framework of globalization as polarization, hybridization, and homogenization, this study explores the impacts that changes in menstrual practices and perceptions can have on female health outcomes, agency in the community, and education efforts. Viewpoints of menstruation distinctly differ according to gender and age, yet ultimately point toward the concept that all three lenses of globalization provide explanations for menstruation in the community of Taquile.

Where You End And I Begin : Notes On Subjectivity And Ethics In The Translation Of Poetry, Andrea Lingenfelter
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
What can translation teach us about poetry and poetics? To what extent is a lyric constellation portable, and to what extent is it embedded in a particular culture or language? How much of a foreign syntax can be replicated before things break down? What is the role of sound in a translation? By discussing poems by three poets whose work I have translated—the Taiwanese poet Yang Mu and the mainland-Chinese poets Zhai Yongming and Wang Yin—this paper explores issues such as the above. It connects these issues with the question of “where you end and I begin” and vice versa, …

This paper utilizes Rochester, NY, as a case study to argue that approaching race intersectionally and across disciplines creates a stronger model of feminist pedagogy. It is based on our work in the classroom and on the Fisher Race Initiatives—a series of three interactive workshops we created on our campus to create change in the aftermath of the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, MO, and in the subsequent rise of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Our goals were to promote dialogue on race, to expose participants to factual information on race, and to emphasize the intersectional causes of poverty in the Rochester …

Embryonic Exposure Of Chicken Chicks (Gallus Gallus Domesticus) Leads To Heightened Sensitivities Towards The Exposed Scent, Ryan Hughes, Gregory B. Cunningham
Biology Faculty/Staff Publications
In chickens, food consumption can be altered by exposing the chicks to scents as embryos. We exposed eggs to an orange-scented food additive in the final days of incubation. Following hatching, we tested these exposed chicks’ ability to detect this scent at a variety of concentrations. We found that orange-exposed chicks responded to an orange-scented solution at lower concentrations than control chicks. This sensitization may allow chicks to be more effective at locating acceptable food items but requires further testing to determine its significance. Orange-exposed and control chicks were also tested with the scent of raspberry. Orange-exposed chicks responded to …
