Interdependence: Being Reformed By Students With Disabilities, Melinda Eichhorn Jan 2017

Interdependence: Being Reformed By Students With Disabilities, Melinda Eichhorn

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Throughout my career in special education, I have reconsidered my beliefs about disability. As I have transitioned from a special educator to a teacher trainer in India to an assistant professor in a Christian college, I have looked beyond limitations and deficits of my students to see individual uniqueness. In this article, I share my lived experience of people with severe special needs ministering to me in India, explore the lived experiences of other disability advocates, and describe the implications this has for my teaching at a Christian college.

Child Temperamental Regulation And Classroom Quality In Head Start: Considering The Role Of Cumulative Economic Risk, Kathleen Moritz Rudasill, Leslie R. Hawley, Jennifer Locasale-Crouch, Eric S. Buhs Jan 2017

Child Temperamental Regulation And Classroom Quality In Head Start: Considering The Role Of Cumulative Economic Risk, Kathleen Moritz Rudasill, Leslie R. Hawley, Jennifer Locasale-Crouch, Eric S. Buhs

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

There is growing recognition that cumulative economic risk places children at higher risk for depressed academic competencies (Crosnoe & Cooper, 2010; NCCP, 2008; Sameroff, 2000). Yet, children’s temperamental regulation and the quality of the early childhood classroom environment have been associated with better academic skills. This study is an examination of prekindergarten classroom quality (instructional support, emotional support, organization) as a moderator between temperamental regulation and early math and literacy skills for children at varying levels of cumulative economic risk. The sample includes children enrolled in Head Start programs drawn from the FACES 2009 study. Three main findings emerged. First, …

Adverse Eating Attitudes And Inadequate Calcium Intake And Their Relationship To The Prevalence Of Skeletal Fracture Injuries Among Competitive American Figure Skaters, Dana T. Sivak

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The Female Athlete Triad (Triad) and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) describe conditions in which energy availability (EA) is low relative to the imbalance between dietary energy intake and energy expenditure required for health and activities of daily living, growth, and sporting activities. Figure skating as an aesthetic sport, requires great demands on time and is a sport whose participants can be affected by such syndromes, but has been minimally studied. The objective of this non-experimental, cross-sectional survey study was to identify the association between the Triad and RED-S' overlapping components of adverse eating attitudes, low calcium intake, and …

Per Scientiam Ad Justitiam: Magnus Hirschfeld's Episteme Of Biological Publicity, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute for Sexual Science was founded in Berlin in 1919 as a place of research, political advocacy, counseling, and public education. Inspired by the world’s first gay rights organizations, it was closely allied with other groups fighting for sexual reform and women’s rights, and was destroyed in 1933 as the first target of the Nazi book burnings. Not Straight from Germany examines the legacy of that history, combining essays and a lavish array of visual materials. Scholarly essays investigate the ways in which sex became public in early 20th-century Germany, contributing to a growing awareness of Hirschfeld’s influence …

Climate Dynamics, Invader Fitness, And Ecosystem Resistance In An Invasion-Factor Framework, Stephen L. Young, David R. Clements, Antonio Ditommaso Jan 2017

Climate Dynamics, Invader Fitness, And Ecosystem Resistance In An Invasion-Factor Framework, Stephen L. Young, David R. Clements, Antonio Ditommaso

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

As researchers and land managers increasingly seek to understand plant invasions and the external (climate) and internal (plant genetics) conditions that govern the process, new insight is helping to answer the elusive question of what makes some invasions successful and others not. Plant invasion success or failure is based on a combination of evolutionary and ecological processes. Abiotic (e.g., climate) and biotic (e.g., plant competition) conditions in the environment and plant genetics (e.g., fitness) combine in either decreasing or increasing invasion, yet it has proven challenging to know exactly which of these conditions leads to success for a given species, …

Beyond Precision Weed Control: A Model For True Integration, Stephen L. Young Jan 2017

Beyond Precision Weed Control: A Model For True Integration, Stephen L. Young

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Precision means being exact and accurate and is an important management component for cropping systems. However, precision does not mean integration, which encompasses spatial and temporal dimensions and is a necessary practice rivaling precision. True IWM merges precision and integration by incorporating advanced technology that allows for greater flexibility of inputs and enhanced responsiveness to field conditions. Examples of this approach are non-existent due to a lack of suitable technological tools and a need for a paradigm shift. Herein a potential model startup company is offered as a guide to advance beyond precision weed control to true integration. The critical …

A Dynamic Data Structure To Efficiently Find The Points Below A Line And Estimate Their Number, Bart Kuijpers, Peter Z. Revesz Jan 2017

A Dynamic Data Structure To Efficiently Find The Points Below A Line And Estimate Their Number, Bart Kuijpers, Peter Z. Revesz

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

A basic question in computational geometry is how to find the relationship between a set of points and a line in a real plane. In this paper, we present multidimensional data structures for N points that allow answering the following queries for any given input line: (1) estimate in O(log N) time the number of points below the line; (2) return in O(log N + k) time the k ≤ N points that are below the line; and (3) return in O(log N) time the point that is closest to the line. We illustrate the utility of this computational question …

Automated Stem Angle Determination For Temporal Plant Phenotyping Analysis, Sruti Das Choudhury, Saptarsi Goswami, Srinidhi Bashyam, Ashok Samal, Tala Awada Jan 2017

Automated Stem Angle Determination For Temporal Plant Phenotyping Analysis, Sruti Das Choudhury, Saptarsi Goswami, Srinidhi Bashyam, Ashok Samal, Tala Awada

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Image-based plant phenotyping analysis refers to the monitoring and quantification of phenotyping traits by analyzing images of the plants captured by different types of cameras at regular intervals in a controlled environment. Extracting meaningful phenotypes for temporal phenotyping analysis by considering individual parts of a plant, e.g., leaves and stem, using computer-vision based techniques remains a critical bottleneck due to constantly in- creasing complexity in plant architecture with variations in self-occlusions and phyllotaxy. The paper introduces an algorithm to compute the stem angle, a potential measure for plants’ susceptibility to lodging, i.e., the bending of stem of the plant. Annual …

Anisotropy, Phonon Modes, And Lattice Anharmonicity From Dielectric Function Tensor Analysis Of Monoclinic Cadmium Tungstate, Alyssa Mock, Rafal Korlacki, Sean Knight, Mathias Schubert Jan 2017

Anisotropy, Phonon Modes, And Lattice Anharmonicity From Dielectric Function Tensor Analysis Of Monoclinic Cadmium Tungstate, Alyssa Mock, Rafal Korlacki, Sean Knight, Mathias Schubert

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We determine the frequency dependence of four independent Cartesian tensor elements of the dielectric function for CdWO4 using generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry within mid-infrared and far-infrared spectral regions. Different single crystal cuts, (010) and (001), are investigated. From the spectral dependencies of the dielectric function tensor and its inverse we determine all long-wavelength active transverse and longitudinal optic phonon modes with Au and Bu symmetry as well as their eigenvectors within the monoclinic lattice. We thereby demonstrate that such information can be obtained completely without physical model line-shape analysis in materials with monoclinic symmetry. We then augment the …

Metabolic Engineering Of The Pentose Phosphate Pathway For Enhanced Limonene Production In The Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Po-Cheng Lin, Rajib Saha, Fuzhong Zhang, Himadri B. Pakrasi

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Isoprenoids are diverse natural compounds, which have various applications as pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and solvents. The low yield of isoprenoids in plants makes them difficult for cost-effective production, and chemical synthesis of complex isoprenoids is impractical. Microbial production of isoprenoids has been considered as a promising approach to increase the yield. In this study, we engineered the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 for sustainable production of a commercially valuable isoprenoid, limonene. Limonene synthases from the plants Mentha spicata and Citrus limon were expressed in cyanobacteria for limonene production. Production of limonene was two-fold higher with limonene synthase from M. spicata …

Delphiforce, A Tool For Electrostatic Force Calculations: Applications To Macromolecular Binding, Lin Li, Arghya Chakravorty, Emil Alexov

Publications

Long-range electrostatic forces play an important role in molecular biology, particularly in macromolecular interactions. However, calculating the electrostatic forces for irregularly shaped molecules immersed in water is a difficult task. Here, we report a new tool, DelPhiForce, which is a tool in the DelPhi package that calculates and visualizes the electrostatic forces in biomolecular systems. In parallel, the DelPhi algorithm for modeling electrostatic potential at user-defined positions has been enhanced to include triquadratic and tricubic interpolation methods. The tricubic interpolation method has been tested against analytical solutions and it has been demonstrated that the corresponding errors are negligibly small at …

Human Rights: From Legal Transplants To Fair Translation, James M. Donovan Jan 2017

Human Rights: From Legal Transplants To Fair Translation, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The current regime of international human rights suffers from three shortcomings: First, it has failed to adequately address the reality of cultural diversity. Second, the formalized human rights treaties have been ineffective in their ability to compel states to reform their behaviors, and third, the uncontrolled growth in the number of human rights weakens the impact of appeals to that standard.

Although treated as independent problems, this paper finds that these three limitations are sufficiently linked such that a remedy to the first will simultaneously resolve the others. Parts I and II of the paper describe how the imposition of …
