Evaluating Trophic Rewilding As A Conservation Technique, Aaron Sieve Jan 2017

Evaluating Trophic Rewilding As A Conservation Technique, Aaron Sieve

Biology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The focus for this paper is to define specifically trophic rewilding, determine its efficacy as a conservation technique, and explore ways to lessen one of its key limitations. Trophic rewilding is the conservation technique whereby an extirpated keystone species or ecosystem engineer is reintroduced into a degraded habitat to restore ecological function by triggering trophic cascades. The technique is evaluated through analysis of the concepts of trophic cascades and ecosystem engineers. Key limitations of trophic rewilding are that a lack of population control in reintroduced may cause issues, that many times not enough is known about trophic cascades to be …

4-Methylcyclohexanemethanol Acute Toxicity To Daphnia And Its Effects On General Esterase And Glutathione S-Transferase Activity In Fathead Minnows, Rachel Clark, Jared Lewis, Jeehoon Jung, Benjamin Thornton

Research in Biology

In 2014, 10,000 gallons of crude MCHM spilled into the Elk River in West Virginia. Due to a paucity of information about the toxicity of this chemical prior to the spill, our research aimed to verify the published 48-h EC50 for Daphnia magna (Daphnia) examine the effects of MCHM on two enzyme detoxification systems, general esterase and glutathione S-transferase, in Pimephales promelas (Fathead Minnow). We used pure MCHM instead of the crude form used in Eastman’s toxicity tests because the composition of crude MCHM is variable. The EC50 we obtained for pure MCHM did not differ significantly from …

An Evaluation Of Gridded Temperature Products And Their Effectiveness In Modeling Small Scale Ambient Temperatures, Barrie Chileen Jan 2017

An Evaluation Of Gridded Temperature Products And Their Effectiveness In Modeling Small Scale Ambient Temperatures, Barrie Chileen

Geography: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The use of remotely sensed temperature products is becoming increasingly prevalent in research on climate change due to their accessibility, low cost, and spatial and temporal coverage. These studies use gridded products to model near-surface ambient temperatures as many often lack the resources and time to conduct on- site temperature measurements. Previous studies have compared the effectiveness of these gridded products against each other and weather station data (Vavrus et al. 2015, McEvoy et al. 2014). However, little research has been done to determine the effectiveness of these gridded products in modeling ambient climate. For this study, 65 LogTag temperature …

Guatemala : Chagas Disease, Audrey Datzman

Global Public Health

Chagas disease is a parasitic and vector-borne endemic prevalent across Latin American countries, particularly Guatemala. The parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, is spread through triatomine insect vectors often found in low-income housing. Already claiming twelve-thousand deaths in 2016, Guatemala faces a major challenge in attempting to eliminate the triatomine vectors of Chagas disease. Various interventions have been undertaken in the country, including insecticide-based control and community-based vector surveillance.

The Psychology Of Beethoven And The Eroica Symphony, Sean P. Harty, Rebekah K. Gohl, Dana J. Burhorn, Joshua S. Morano

2017 Festschrift: Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Op. 55

As a concert pianist and chapel organist, Beethoven rose to a fame in Vienna which allowed him patrons and friends who would support his compositions. One such patron was Count Waldstein, who claimed that Beethoven would inherit the spirit of Mozart in his famous prediction of Beethoven’s success. To study composition Beethoven turned to two prominent Viennese composers: Haydn and Salieri. As his fame grew, his health decreased until he was diagnosed with deafness and moved to Heiligenstadt. Here Beethoven wrote a letter to his brothers called the Heiligenstadt Testament, which was never sent but expressed his troubled mental …

Integrating Kaolin Clay For Ambrosia Beetle Management In Ornamental Crops Of Eastern Redbud, Christopher T. Werle, Karla M. Addesso, Blair J. Sampson, Jason B. Oliver, John J. Adamczyk

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Invasive ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) are an important pest problem at ornamental tree nurseries. Available chemical treatments are not completely effective and, due to the length of the beetle dispersal period and insecticide breakdown, repeated treatments can become costly in terms of application expense and nontarget impacts. Additional options are needed to reduce application frequency and to provide an acceptable level of crop protection. Four treatments were tested using ethanol-injected eastern redbud trees at research sites in Mississippi (MS) and Tennessee (TN) over 2 years (2014–15), with the number of new ambrosia beetle galleries compared over time on 1) nontreated …

Engagement In A Public Forum: Knowledge, Action, And Cosmopolitanism, Jennifer F. Brewer, Natalie Springuel, James Wilson, Robin Alden, Dana Morse, Catherine Schmitt, Chris Bartlett, Teresa Joihnson, Carla Guenther, Damian Brady Jan 2017

Engagement In A Public Forum: Knowledge, Action, And Cosmopolitanism, Jennifer F. Brewer, Natalie Springuel, James Wilson, Robin Alden, Dana Morse, Catherine Schmitt, Chris Bartlett, Teresa Joihnson, Carla Guenther, Damian Brady

Geography

Facing challenges to the civic purpose of higher education, some scholars and administrators turn to the rhetoric of engagement. Simultaneously, the political philosophy of cosmopolitanism has gained intellectual favor, advocating openness to the lived experiences of distant others. We articulate linkages between these two discourses in an extended case study, finding that a cosmopolitan ethos of engagement in a rural context can improve (1) understanding among people ordinarily separated by spatialized social-ecological differences, (2) prospects for longer term environmental sustainability, and (3) the visionary potential of collaborative inquiry. Despite globalization of food systems and neoliberal shifts in fishery management, an …

A Dialectical Approach To Theoretical Integration In Developmental-Contextual Identity Research, Jayson O. Seaman, Erin H. Sharp, Andrew D. Coppens Jan 2017

A Dialectical Approach To Theoretical Integration In Developmental-Contextual Identity Research, Jayson O. Seaman, Erin H. Sharp, Andrew D. Coppens

Kinesiology

Future advances in identity research will depend on integration across major theoretical traditions. Developmental-contextualism has established essential criteria to guide this effort, including specifying the context of identity development, its timing over the life course, and its content. This article assesses four major traditions of identity research - identify status, eudaimonic identity, sociocultural theory, and narrative identity - in light of these criteria, and describes the contribution of each tradition to the broader enterprise of developmental-contextual research. This article proposes dialectical integration of the four traditions, for the purpose of generating new questions when the tensions and contradictions among …

Comparing Group Deliberation To Other Forms Of Preference Aggregation In Valuing Ecosystem Services, Mackenzie B. Murphy, Georgia Mayrommati, Varun Rao Mallampalli, Richard B. Howarth, Mark E. Borsuk Jan 2017

Comparing Group Deliberation To Other Forms Of Preference Aggregation In Valuing Ecosystem Services, Mackenzie B. Murphy, Georgia Mayrommati, Varun Rao Mallampalli, Richard B. Howarth, Mark E. Borsuk

New Hampshire EPSCoR

Deliberative methods for valuing ecosystem services are hypothesized to yield group preferences that differ systematically from those that would be obtained through calculative aggregation of the preferences of participating individuals. We tested this hypothesis by comparing the group consensus results of structured deliberations against a variety of aggregation methods applied to individual participant preferences that were elicited both before and after the deliberations. Participants were also asked about their perceptions of the deliberative process, which we used to assess their ability to detect preference changes and identify the causes of any changes. For five of the seven groups tested, the …
