Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Forecasting At Short And Medium Time Scales, Julie Pullen, Richard Allard, Hyodae Seo, Arthur J. Miller, Shuyi Chen, Luciano Ponzi Pezzi, Travis Smith, Philip Chu, José Alves, Rui Caldeira
Journal of Marine Research
Recent technological advances over the past few decades have enabled the development of fully coupled atmosphere-ocean modeling prediction systems that are used today to support short-term (days to weeks) and medium-term (10–21 days) needs for both the operational and research communities. We overview the coupling framework, including model components and grid resolution considerations, as well as the coupling physics by examining heat fluxes between atmosphere and ocean, momentum transfer, and freshwater fluxes. These modeling systems can be run as fully coupled atmosphere-ocean and atmosphere-ocean-wave configurations. Examples of several modeling systems applied to complex coastal regions including Madeira Island, Adriatic Sea, …

The Generation Of Rossby Waves And Wake Eddies By Small Islands, R. C. Musgrave, G. Flierl, T. Peacock
Journal of Marine Research
The influence of small islands on zonal geostrophic currents is examined in a two-layer configuration. An analytic solution for steady quasigeostrophic flow is derived under the assumption of no upstream influence and is validated numerically in a time-dependent quasigeostrophic model. Under these conditions solutions are the sum of two eigenmodes, which are either arrested Rossby waves or evanescent depending on background flow conditions (layer speeds, stratification, and latitude). In contrast to homogeneous flows, arrested Rossby waves in two layers can occur even when the depth mean flow is westward and can be generated both to the east and west of …
Doctors, Death, And Denial: The Origins Of Hospice Care In 20th Century America, Sarah E. Pajka
Doctors, Death, And Denial: The Origins Of Hospice Care In 20th Century America, Sarah E. Pajka
Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections
This essay provides insight into the social and cultural trends that led to the creation of hospice care in the United States. The essay covers the changes in treatment of death by the medical profession, from the discussion of tuberculosis sanatoriums and cancer centers in the early 1900s through the rise of medical authority, and the pivotal role of Yale School of Nursing dean Florence Wald in the 1980 opening of Connecticut Hospice, the first modern American hospice facility.
The Influence Of Classroom Cell Phone Policies On Instructor Credibility, Nicholas Tatum
The Influence Of Classroom Cell Phone Policies On Instructor Credibility, Nicholas Tatum
Communication and Sociology
Considering the growth of cell phone usage in the classroom, instructors often attempt to regulate student behavior through specific technology policies in their syllabi. However, research offers little explanation regarding the influence of policies that try to restrict cell phone usage on perceptions of instructor credibility. Using the social influence (SI) model of technology use as a sensitizing lens, results from this study (N = 206) demonstrated that policies encouraging the use of cell phones for instructional purposes resulted in significantly greater student perceptions of instructor credibility than policies discouraging the use of cell phones for noninstructional (i.e. social) purposes.

Although membrane proteins represent most therapeutically relevant drug targets, the availability of atomic resolution structures for this class of proteins has been limited. Structural characterization has been hampered by the biophysical nature of these polytopic transporters, receptors, and channels, and recent innovations to in vitro techniques aim to mitigate these challenges. One such class of membrane proteins, the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily, are broadly expressed throughout the human body, required for normal physiology and disease-causing when mutated, yet lacks sufficient structural representation in the Protein Data Bank. However, recent improvements to biophysical techniques (e.g., cryo-electron microscopy) have allowed for previously …
Polarization Of Cystic Fibrosis Macrophages Is Dysregulated, Evan Jacob Levy
Polarization Of Cystic Fibrosis Macrophages Is Dysregulated, Evan Jacob Levy
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
We hypothesize that intrinsic defects in cystic fibrosis (CF) macrophages affect their ability to adequately respond to extracellular stimuli, affecting their phenotypic response and contributing to a hyper-inflammatory state.
Peripheral blood-derived monocytes from healthy donors (HD) (n=10) as well as CF subjects (n=10) were differentiated into macrophages using RPMI media with 50 ng/mL of MCSF for 10 days. Cells were treated with 100 ng/mL of LPS plus 20 ng/mL of INF-gamma to activate the M1 phenotype or 20 ng/mL of IL-4 to activate the M2 phenotype. Cells were treated for 24 hours in preparation for RNA isolation and 3 hours …

Scavenger receptors constitute a large family of proteins that are structurally diverse and participate in a wide range of biological functions. These receptors are expressed predominantly by myeloid cells and recognize a diverse variety of ligands including endogenous and modified host-derived molecules and microbial pathogens. There are currently eight classes of scavenger receptors, many of which have multiple names, leading to inconsistencies and confusion in the literature. To address this problem, a workshop was organized by the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, to help develop a clear definition of scavenger receptors and …

Climate oscillations and episodic processes interact with evolution, ecology and biogeography to determine the structure and complex mosaic that is the biosphere. Parasites and parasite–host assemblages are key components in a general explanatory paradigm for global biodiversity. We explore faunal assembly in the context of Quaternary time frames of the past 2.6 million years, a period dominated by episodic shifts in climate. Climate drivers cross a continuum from geological to contemporary timescales and serve to determine the structure and distribution of complex biotas. Cycles within cycles are apparent, with drivers that are layered, multifactorial and complex. These cycles influence the …
Tuning Parameter Selection In Cox Proportional Hazards Model With A Diverging Number Of Parameters, Andy Ni, Jianwen Cai
Tuning Parameter Selection In Cox Proportional Hazards Model With A Diverging Number Of Parameters, Andy Ni, Jianwen Cai
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Regularized variable selection is a powerful tool for identifying the true regression model from a large number of candidates by applying penalties to the objective functions. The penalty functions typically involve a tuning parameter that control the complexity of the selected model. The ability of the regularized variable selection methods to identify the true model critically depends on the correct choice of the tuning parameter. In this study we develop a consistent tuning parameter selection method for regularized Cox's proportional hazards model with a diverging number of parameters. The tuning parameter is selected by minimizing the generalized information criterion. We …

This retrospective study shows that the majority of patients’ correlations between PSA and Testosterone during the on-treatment period is at least 0.90. Model-based duration calculations to control PSA levels during off-treatment are provided. There are two pairs of models. In one pair, the Generalized Linear Model and Mixed Model are both used to analyze the variability of PSA at the individual patient level by using the variable “Patient ID” as a repeated measure. In the second pair, Patient ID is not used as a repeated measure but additional baseline variables are included to analyze the variability of PSA.

A Comprehensive Image-Based Phenomic Analysis Reveals The Complex Genetic Architecture Of Shoot Growth Dynamics In Rice (Oryza Sativa), Malachy T. Campbell, Qian Du, Kan Liu, Chris J. Brien, Bettina Berger, Chi Zhang, Harkamal Walia
Agronomy & Horticulture -- Faculty Publications
Early vigor is an important trait for many rice (Oryza sativa L.)- growing environments. However, genetic characterization and improvement for early vigor is hindered by the temporal nature of the trait and strong genotype × environment effects. We explored the genetic architecture of shoot growth dynamics during the early and active tillering stages by applying a functional modeling and genomewide association (GWAS) mapping approach on a diversity panel of ~360 rice accessions. Multiple loci with small effects on shoot growth trajectory were identified, indicating a complex polygenic architecture. Natural variation for shoot growth dynamics was assessed in a subset …

Hyporheic Flow Possibilities Within Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus) Redds On The Blackledge River In Marlborough Connecticut, Samuel Fixler
Hyporheic Flow Possibilities Within Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus) Redds On The Blackledge River In Marlborough Connecticut, Samuel Fixler
Environmental Studies Honors Papers
The fluvial geomorphic process of hyporheic flow provides critical nutrients and dissolved oxygen to macroinvertebrates and eggs within riverbeds through hyporheic exchange. Hyporheic flow may operate at similar scales within sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) redds. Limited documentation exists on the hyporheic processes within lamprey redds. This study attempts to measure hyporheic flow using a saline injection syringe and salinity probe to record salinity-time curves. The method was applied to several redds on the Blackledge River, Marlborough, Connecticut. The second aspect of this study examined the hydraulic properties of lamprey redds within a controlled environment in a 0.5 m …
The Effects Of Fetal Alcohol Exposure On Gene Expression And Associated Behavioral Markers In Sprague Dawley Rats, Sarah Willey
The Effects Of Fetal Alcohol Exposure On Gene Expression And Associated Behavioral Markers In Sprague Dawley Rats, Sarah Willey
Biology Honors Papers
Alcohol is a dangerous recreational substance because of its availability and the economic, social, and biological problems that it can cause. Fetal alcohol exposure, although preventable, is particularly harmful to a developing embryo. This exposure often causes fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), the symptoms of which include learning disabilities and psychological hardships with comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, and attention deficit disorder. One of the main teratogenic effects of alcohol is the effect on epigenetic modifications and altered gene expression during development. These modifications involve changes in the methylation and condensation of DNA that then alters the expression of specific …

Sulfur Isotope Characteristics Of The Permian Vhms Deposits In Tasik Chini District, Central Belt Of Peninsular Malaysia, Mohd Basril Iswadi Basori, Khin Zaw, Robert Ross Large, Wan Fuad Wan Hassan
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Sulfur isotope data from sulfide and sulfate minerals have been measured from the two typical examples of the Permian volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits at the Tasik Chini district in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia. In this study, we present the sulfur isotope data for 33 sulfide minerals and 23 barite samples from two VHMS deposits in the Tasik Chini district. Sulfides show a narrow range of sulfur values from -2.9%o to +8.30%o, which can be interpreted to be derived from a mixed sulfur source of reduced seawater sulfate with the possible addition of magmatic sulfur. Sulfate sulfur in …
