A Risk-Based Method For Estimating The Carbon Sequestration Budget For A Mixed Hardwood Forest, Erin Cooper

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere have risen from approximately 310 ppm in the 1950’s to over 400 ppm as of 2015. This rise in CO2 has likely resulted in the observed warming trend of the earth’s atmosphere in the same time frame, causing significant concern in the scientific community. Several mitigation strategies have arisen to combat the upward trend of CO2 emissions in recent decades, among them being carbon sequestration- the process of capturing CO2 from the atmosphere and holding it for an extended period of time. This study used the U.S. Forest …

Polaron Dynamics In Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles And Applications In Superresolution Imaging, Yifei Jiang Dec 2017

Polaron Dynamics In Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles And Applications In Superresolution Imaging, Yifei Jiang

All Dissertations

Charge carrier dynamics in conjugated polymers are of fundamental interest as they directly affect the performance of conjugated polymer based devices. Through efficient fluorescence quenching by hole polarons, dynamics of individual charge carriers, including generation, recombination, and transport, can be observed through single particle fluorescence study of conjugated polymers nanoparticles (CPNs). In this dissertation, the hopping dynamics of hole polarons in CPNs were studied using superresolution microscopy. Due to quenching of the local fluorescence, a hole polaron can form a “dark spot” that moves with the polaron and results in displacements in the fluorescence centroid. These position fluctuations were used …

The Effects Of Dopamine On Frequency Dependent Short Term Synaptic Plasticity: A Comparison Of Layer Contributions And Rhythmic Dynamics, Jonna Marie Jackson

Dissertations

Executive functions (e.g. working memory [WM]) are known to be mediated by prefrontal cortical areas of the human brain which share homology with mouse medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Furthermore, it is well established that optimal dopaminergic input is required for proper WM function in the PFC. While it is well established that the mPFC receives inputs from several different brain areas, impinging on different compartmental regions of cells, it remains unknown how layer V pyramidal cells, the major output cells of the mPFC, integrate this information. Additionally, it remains unknown how dopamine modulates this integration by way of separate afferents …

Three-Dimensional Context Rather Than Nls Amino Acid Sequence Determines Importin Α Subtype Specificity For Rcc1., Rajeshwer S. Sankhala, Ravi K. Lokareddy, Salma Begum, Ruth A. Pumroy, Richard E. Gillilan, Gino Cingolani

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Active nuclear import of Ran exchange factor RCC1 is mediated by importin α3. This pathway is essential to generate a gradient of RanGTP on chromatin that directs nucleocytoplasmic transport, mitotic spindle assembly and nuclear envelope formation. Here we identify the mechanisms of importin α3 selectivity for RCC1. We find this isoform binds RCC1 with one order of magnitude higher affinity than the generic importin α1, although the two isoforms share an identical NLS-binding groove. Importin α3 uses its greater conformational flexibility to wedge the RCC1 β-propeller flanking the NLS against its lateral surface, preventing steric clashes with its Armadillo-core. Removing …

Synergy Of Two Low-Affinity Nlss Determines The High Avidity Of Influenza A Virus Nucleoprotein Np For Human Importin Α Isoforms., Wei Wu, Rajeshwer S. Sankhala, Tyler J Florio, Lixin Zhou, Nhan L.T. Nguyen, Ravi K. Lokareddy, Gino Cingolani, Nelly Panté

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

The influenza A virus nucleoprotein (NP) is an essential multifunctional protein that encapsidates the viral genome and functions as an adapter between the virus and the host cell machinery. NPs from all strains of influenza A viruses contain two nuclear localization signals (NLSs): a well-studied monopartite NLS1 and a less-characterized NLS2, thought to be bipartite. Through site-directed mutagenesis and functional analysis, we found that NLS2 is also monopartite and is indispensable for viral infection. Atomic structures of importin α bound to two variants of NLS2 revealed NLS2 primarily binds the major-NLS binding site of importin α, unlike NLS1 that associates …

Effective Parental Cooperation And Communication As Protective Factors For Adult Offspring Of Divorce, Damla Til Ogut Dec 2017

Effective Parental Cooperation And Communication As Protective Factors For Adult Offspring Of Divorce, Damla Til Ogut

Theses and Dissertations

Research and society have focused attention on how divorce affects family dynamics for decades. The clinical literature points to significant discrepancies in psychological variables between offspring from divorced versus intact families, suggesting that divorce contributes to negative psychosocial outcomes. Accordingly, investigations have revealed the adverse effects of co-parental conflict and antagonistic communication on divorce offspring’s psychological outcomes. Although parental cooperation and communication are suggested to serve as protective factors, more research is needed, given the current literature’s reliance on measures of psychopathology, yet making conclusions on psychological wellness. Among 244 college students, results indicated that divorce offspring reported lower levels …
