Ace’S And Trauma In Education, Richard Santangelo

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The author of this paper has worked in special education since 1988, primarily with Emotional and Behavioral Disordered (EBD) students. Throughout the author's career there have been many conversations about why some students display EBD behaviors. Through many years of teaching and numerous professional conferences, it was not until January 2016 that the author heard about ACES. This piqued the author's curiosity. Dr. Felitti spear-headed a study in the mid-1990s out of a clinic in Southern California. As a practicing physician focusing on weight loss he began questioning clients about their social history. Felitti found that his clients experienced trauma …

Parental Involvement: Importance, Reality And Application, Paul Stiles Jan 2017

Parental Involvement: Importance, Reality And Application, Paul Stiles

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Parents have always been actively involved in their child’s education. As researchers continue to explore factors that drive academic success, parental involvement has emerged as a factor that promotes positive outcomes. Just how they are involved and why they become involved is something that researchers continue to examine. However, regardless of the research conclusions on parental involvement, parental involvement initiatives continue to be implemented at a surprisingly low rate. This paper examines modes of parental involvement, barriers to parental involvement implementation and ways to minimize barriers while maximizing parental involvement effectiveness.

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Brain-based teaching is an evidence based teaching philosophy that is widely accepted as successful practice. This philosophy revolves around teaching to how the brain functions. One aspect of this practice is relating movement to increasing brain function. This literature review examines studies where students were assessed on their academic performance after having engaged in different forms of movement, including physical education classes, organized programs, and specific movement sequences. While it is concluded that there are many factors that impact a student's performance, research shows that there is an established positive correlation between movement and exercise, and an increase in academic …

Association Of Sex Drive, Gender, And Infidelity In Romantic Relationships, Mari Eik

The Cosenza Prize for Undergraduate Writing: Winning Papers

This study examined the association between sex drive and infidelity based on gender differences. All participants had either been in a serious relationship in the past, or were currently in one. The sample was compromised of students from a Northeastern university in America (N=60). Those who reported having a high sex drive were more likely to engage in infidelity. However, there were only partial statistically significant results for men being more unfaithful than women. Infidelity was examined using two measures, Perception of Dating Infidelity Scale (Wilson, Mattingly, Clark, Weidler & Bequette, 2011) with no statistically significant gender difference, and a …

Fingerprinting: A Study In Cognitive Bias And Its Effects On Latent Fingerprint Analysis, Jessica Kern Jan 2017

Fingerprinting: A Study In Cognitive Bias And Its Effects On Latent Fingerprint Analysis, Jessica Kern

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

The forensic science world contains a variety of disciplines that cover a wide range of sciences, from chemistry to physics to biology. Today, DNA is considered to be the “goldstandard” of forensics, due to the amount of information that can be collected. However, fingerprinting used to be the pinnacle of forensic science before DNA because of the uniqueness of each print and their unchanging nature. The different patterns, along with the smaller ridge details, allow examiners to categorize and differentiate between two similar fingerprints, using the standard method of ACE-V, adopted by all fingerprint examiners. Experts had believed that fingerprints …

Empathy As Sacred Ethic: A Chaplain's Perspective On Difficult End Of Life Cases, Peter L. Bauck Jan 2017

Empathy As Sacred Ethic: A Chaplain's Perspective On Difficult End Of Life Cases, Peter L. Bauck

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

Because of our increasingly intercultural world, it can be difficult for patients, families, and medical teams to decide on what they should do for patients who are, in the medical team’s opinion, near the end of life. The family and medical team can hold disparate beliefs and values around what they should do for the patient. Ethics committees often get involved in these difficult end of life cases. These cases are also emotionally charged, especially for the family as they wrestle with the intensity of their loved one’s situation and try to decide what to do. Because of the emotional intensity …

Nepa, Flpma, And Impact Reduction: An Empirical Assessment Of Blm Resource Management Planning In The Mountain West, John C. Ruple, Mark Capone

Wallace Stegner Center for Land, Resources, and the Environment publications

This Article reviews Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) completed in conjunction with Resource Management Plan (RMP) revisions conducted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming between 2004 and 2014. Based on our review of sixteen EISs, we found that RMP revisions increased application of more protective surface use stipulations by statistically significant amounts without causing a statistically significant change in either the number of jobs created or the pace of oil and gas development. In fact, both the number of jobs created and wells drilled increased slightly despite strengthened environmental protections. We also found that …

Nepa And The Energy Policy Act Of 2005 Statutory Categorical Exclusions: What Are The Environmental Costs Of Expedited Oil And Gas Development?, Mark Capone, John C. Ruple

Wallace Stegner Center for Land, Resources, and the Environment publications

A decade ago, concerned that National Environmental Policy Act (“NEPA”) compliance caused delays in permitting oil and gas (“O&G”) development on federal land, Congress enacted Section 390 of the Energy Policy Act (“EPAct”) of 2005. Section 390 is intended to expedite the environmental review of O&G development projects on federal lands. To effectuate that end Congress created several statutory categorical exclusions (“CEs”) to NEPA that apply to O&G development. Prior to the EPAct, the Bureau of Land Management (“BLM”) would permit new O&G development after conducting an Environmental Impact Statement (“EIS”) or Environmental Assessment (“EA”). EISs and EAs were the …

An On-Campus Botanical Tour To Promote Student Satisfaction And Learning In A University Level Biodiversity Or General Biology Course, Harish H. Ratnayaka

Faculty and Staff Publications

Outdoor, hands-on and experiential learning, as opposed to instruction-based learning in classroom, increases student satisfaction and motivation leading to a deeper understanding of the subject. However, the use of outdoor exercises in undergraduate biology courses is declining due to a variety of constraints. Thus, the goal of this paper is to describe a convenient, no-cost and flexible exercise using an on-campus botanical tour for strengthening specific knowledge areas of major plant groups. Its assessment on conduct and coverage, and student-perceived and actual knowledge gain is also described. Data presented derived from traditional biology undergraduates in sophomore year over nine fall …

The Family Politics Of The Federation Of South African Women: A History Of Public Motherhood In Women’S Antiracist Activism, Meghan Healy-Clancy Jan 2017

The Family Politics Of The Federation Of South African Women: A History Of Public Motherhood In Women’S Antiracist Activism, Meghan Healy-Clancy

History Faculty Publications

This article reexamines the roots of the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW), the first national organization of women from all state-defined racial groups united against apartheid, founded in 1954. It argues that the deep history of public motherhood in southern Africa was what made FEDSAW possible: biological and symbolic motherhood had long been associated with responsibility for public social life in the region. Moreover, the article demonstrates that the first half of the twentieth century represented a time of profound transformation in the ways that women in southern Africa talked about and experienced motherhood. The influences of both missionary …

Treatment-Emergent Hypomania Possibly Associated With Over-The-Counter Supplements, William Olsufka, Mary-Ann Abraham

Touro College of Pharmacy (New York) Publications and Research

The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is gaining popularity in the Western world. Among the general public, CAM is often perceived to be associated with less stigma, fewer adverse effects, and may be more affordable. A number of patients utilize CAM for the treatment of depression; however, as there is limited scientific evidence, the safety profile of these supplements are largely unknown. In this case, a 42-year-old man developed hypomania approximately 1 week after S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) therapy was initiated for depression. The combination of SAMe and 5-HTP can potentially induce hypomanic episodes.

Finasteride has been used extensively until now as a relative efficient therapeutic option for male androgenic alopecia and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Unfortunately, over time several concerns appeared regarding the frequency and magnitude of adverse effects, which in some cases have been even irreversible. Herein we review the recent literature on this topic, trying to clarify the current safety profile of Finasteride for these two therapeutic indications. We concluded that Finasteride could be retained as a therapeutic approach for male androgenic alopecia, based on two important reasons. First, a synergistic action between a partial inhibitor of 5α-reductase (Finasteride) and another compound …
