Gper/Gpr30, A Membrane Estrogen Receptor, Is Expressed In The Brain And Retina Of A Social Fish (Carassius Auratus) And Colocalizes With Isotocin, Lisa A. Mangiamele, Julia R. Gomez, Nancy J. Curtis, Richmond R. Thompson Feb 2017

Thompson

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Estradiol rapidly (within 30 minutes) influences a variety of sociosexual behaviors in both mammalian and nonmammalian vertebrates, including goldfish, in which it rapidly stimulates approach responses to the visual cues of females. Such rapid neuromodulatory effects are likely mediated via membrane-associated estrogen receptors; however, the localization and distribution of such receptors within the nervous system is not well described. To begin to address this gap, we identified GPER/GPR30, a G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor, in goldfish (Carassius auratus) neural tissue and used reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and in situ hybridization to test if GPR30 is expressed in the brain regions that …

A Theological Dialogue With And Evaluation Of Erik H. Erikson’S Theory Of Identity Development In Light Of Pauline Baptismal Theology In Romans And Some Implications For Pastoral Care, Walter Steele Feb 2017

A Theological Dialogue With And Evaluation Of Erik H. Erikson’S Theory Of Identity Development In Light Of Pauline Baptismal Theology In Romans And Some Implications For Pastoral Care, Walter Steele

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Steele, Walter R. “A Theological Dialogue with and Evaluation of Erik H. Erikson’s Theory of Identity Development in Light of Pauline Baptismal Theology in Romans and Some Implications for Pastoral Care” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2017. 304pp.

The Issue of identity and identity development, or actualization, is both a psychological and a theological issue. Among psychologists who have been concerned with identity, the name of Erik H. Erikson is at the forefront. His psychosocial theory has been appropriated by several people in the field of pastoral care, yet his theory has not been adequately subjected to a robust and thorough …

Mitigation Of Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms From Chronic Terror Attacks On Southern Israel, Nuriel Mor, Kathryn L. Dardeck Feb 2017

Mitigation Of Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms From Chronic Terror Attacks On Southern Israel, Nuriel Mor, Kathryn L. Dardeck

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Since 2000, the southern Israeli town of Sderot and neighboring rural region, Otef Aza, have been frequently exposed to nearly identical terror attacks by Hamas. While only a small minority of Otef Aza residents have been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), more than a third of Sderot residents have been so diagnosed. Factors such as social cohesion and ideology may be the unique factors that protect Otef Aza residents from PTSD; however, a gap in the literature exists as to how these same factors might affect PTSD symptomology in Sderot residents. Orthodox religiosity has also been associated with reduced …

Mindful Fathering: An Investigation And Curriculum, Andrew Dobson Feb 2017

Mindful Fathering: An Investigation And Curriculum, Andrew Dobson

Mindfulness Studies Theses

This two-part paper explores the current state of fathering in the United States of America, and aims at highlighting the importance of active fatherly engagement in the lives of children. Statistics from the United States Census (2010) show that 29.5 percent of children under the age of 18 in the United States of America live in fatherless homes. When a father is engaged in the life of a child, developmental outcomes increase (Roopnarine, 2015). This signals a need to investigate solutions to this problem. Mindfulness is offered as a remedy, and mindfulness programs like Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and …

What Is ... Benford’S Law?, Arno Berger, Theodore P. Hill Feb 2017

What Is ... Benford’S Law?, Arno Berger, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

Benford’s law quantifies the surprising fact that in many datasets, such as populations of counties, numbers on the World Wide Web, or incomes and expenses on tax returns, the numbers are much more likely to start with small digits like 1 or 2 than with large digits like 8 or 9. The law actually provides a specific probability distribution on the (significant) digits, telling exactly how likely each sequence of digits is.

The Relationship Between Gratitude And Health Behaviors, Jacob Lowen Feb 2017

The Relationship Between Gratitude And Health Behaviors, Jacob Lowen

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Gratitude interventions lead to significant increases in subjective, psychological, spiritual, and physical well-being. These benefits may be because grateful individuals are better able to form social bonds, better able to utilize coping skills to defer stress, better able to maintain positive affect, and are more creative in problem solving. It remains unclear what mechanism(s) are responsible for the positive benefits associated with gratitude and whether the link between gratitude and health enhancement is bidirectional. The current study seeks to explore the link between gratitude and health behaviors by measuring the increase or maintenance of gratitude over time in response to …

The Unique Role Of Ethnic Identity In The Resilience Of Korean Transracial Adoptees, Sue Han Feb 2017

The Unique Role Of Ethnic Identity In The Resilience Of Korean Transracial Adoptees, Sue Han

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Korean transracial adoptees (KTAs) participated in this quantitative research studying the roles of ethnic identity, self-esteem, acculturation, social support, and family cohesion in predicting resiliency for KTAs using self-report measures. KTAs also completed a demographics questionnaire in which they self-identified in terms of Korean, Korean-American, American, or other. The correlation between self-identification and level of acculturation and ethnic identity was also analyzed. Age and level of ethnic identity was assessed. Results showed that selfesteem is the only significant predictor of resilience. It was found that those who self-identified as Korean American had higher ethnic identity levels. No significant relationship was …

Combined Genome-Wide Linkage And Targeted Association Analysis Of Head Circumference In Autism Spectrum Disorder Families, M. Woodbury-Smith, D. A. Bilder, J. Morgan, L. Jerominski, T. Darlington, Thomas D. Dyer, A. D. Paterson, H. Coon Feb 2017

Combined Genome-Wide Linkage And Targeted Association Analysis Of Head Circumference In Autism Spectrum Disorder Families, M. Woodbury-Smith, D. A. Bilder, J. Morgan, L. Jerominski, T. Darlington, Thomas D. Dyer, A. D. Paterson, H. Coon

School of Medicine Publications

Background: It has long been recognized that there is an association between enlarged head circumference (HC) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the genetics of HC in ASD is not well understood. In order to investigate the genetic underpinning of HC in ASD, we undertook a genome-wide linkage study of HC followed by linkage signal targeted association among a sample of 67 extended pedigrees with ASD.

Methods: HC measurements on members of 67 multiplex ASD extended pedigrees were used as a quantitative trait in a genome-wide linkage analysis. The Illumina 6K SNP linkage panel was used, and analyses were carried …

Cordycepin Induces Apoptosis By Caveolin-1-Mediated Jnk Regulation Of Foxo3a In Human Lung Adenocarcinoma, Jong Cheon Joo, Jung-Hoo Hwang, Eunbi Jo, Young-Rang Kim, Dae Joon Kim, Kyung-Bok Lee, Soo Jung Park, Ik-Soon Jang Feb 2017

Cordycepin Induces Apoptosis By Caveolin-1-Mediated Jnk Regulation Of Foxo3a In Human Lung Adenocarcinoma, Jong Cheon Joo, Jung-Hoo Hwang, Eunbi Jo, Young-Rang Kim, Dae Joon Kim, Kyung-Bok Lee, Soo Jung Park, Ik-Soon Jang

School of Medicine Publications

Forkhead transcription factor (Foxo3a) is a downstream effector of JNK-induced tumor suppression. However, it is not clear whether the caveolin-1 (CAV1)-mediated JNK/Foxo3a pathway is involved in cancer cell apoptosis. We found that cordycepin upregulates CAV1 expression, which was accompanied by JNK phosphorylation (p-JNK) and subsequent Foxo3a translocation into the nucleus, resulting in the upregulation of Bax protein expression. Furthermore, we found that CAV1 overexpression upregulated p-JNK, whereas CAV1 siRNA downregulated p-JNK. Additionally, SP600125, a specific JNK inhibitor, significantly increased Foxo3a phosphorylation, which downregulated Foxo3a translocation into the nucleus, indicating that CAV1 mediates JNK regulation of Foxo3a. Foxo3a siRNA downregulated Bax …

Left And Right: Politics And Images Of Motherhood In Weimar Germany, Michelle L. Vangen Feb 2017

Left And Right: Politics And Images Of Motherhood In Weimar Germany, Michelle L. Vangen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Art historians and cultural critics have long debated the aesthetic and political implications of the stylistic shift in Germany from pre-war experimentations with abstraction and expressive distortion to more clear-cut figuration in their paintings during the years following World War I. They have questioned whether this shift represents a regressive return to tradition or a new artistic direction and if it should be associated with a reactionary or progressive political stance. This dissertation broadens our understanding of German interwar realism, commonly referred to as Neue Sachlichkeit, by examining representations of mothers, a popular theme in the realist painting of …

Capturing The Attention Of Caregivers: Variability In Infant Vocalizations, Catharine A. Castelluccio De Diesbach Feb 2017

Capturing The Attention Of Caregivers: Variability In Infant Vocalizations, Catharine A. Castelluccio De Diesbach

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The effect of variability in infant vocalizations on potential caregivers’ heart rate variability (HRV), facial expressions, and subjective ratings on emotional reactions and desire to approach the baby was examined in an evolutionary context. Recordings of non-canonical, canonical, fussing, and crying vocalizations were utilized to elicit physiological and self-reported reactions from sixty participants. Breastfeeding mothers, non-mothers at high estradiol point in menstrual cycle, non-mothers at low estradiol point in menstrual cycle, fathers, and non-fathers were included in the study. Participants wore Polar RS800 heart rate monitors, were video recorded for facial expression analysis, and filled out 11 point self-rating forms …

Weight Loss Maintenance: Women's Experience During Perimenopause, Karren B. Liebert Feb 2017

Weight Loss Maintenance: Women's Experience During Perimenopause, Karren B. Liebert

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Women’s health may be at risk during middle age, a time when women in the United States often gain weight. Being overweight or obese during perimenopause increases a woman’s vulnerability to disabling health sequela in later life, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression and osteoarthritis, all of which increase morbidity, mortality, health care costs and decrease quality of life. Stigma and discrimination related to overweight and obesity are associated with delay and avoidance of health care, and with poorer quality health care. Weight loss often is followed by weight regain within three to five years. This qualitative study was designed …

Sex Differences In The Anxiety Effects Of Cannabinoids, Helen T. French Feb 2017

Sex Differences In The Anxiety Effects Of Cannabinoids, Helen T. French

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Aim: Anxiety disorders are twice as common among women, and those with anxiety disorders are 2-3 times more likely to have a substance abuse disorder than the general populace. However, little data exists on the sexually dimorphic effects of cannabinoids. In male humans and rodents, low acute doses of cannabinoids are anxiolytic while high and/or chronic doses are anxiogenic. In the dose response curve (DRC), we examined whether the biphasic effects of cannabinoids observed in males are also present in females. In the CB1R antagonism study, CP55,940-induced CB1R activation was antagonized via the CB1R-selective antagonist rimonabant to test the hypothesis …

Environmental Changes Turn On The Sinorhizobium Melitloti Exor-Exos/Chvi (Rsi) Host Invasion Switch, Shari N. Walcott Feb 2017

Environmental Changes Turn On The Sinorhizobium Melitloti Exor-Exos/Chvi (Rsi) Host Invasion Switch, Shari N. Walcott

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The free-living Gram-negative soil bacterium, Sinorhizobium meliloti, must switch into its host-invading form in order to infect the root hairs of the host plant, alfalfa (Medicago sativa), and establish a nitrogen-fixing symbiosis. The activation of the switch is believed to occur inside the infection chamber that is formed by curling of the root hairs. It is not fully understood what signals in the environment of the root hairs trigger and infection chamber S. meliloti to switch into a host-invading form since these signals were not extensively examined until now. This switch can be observed directly, due to …

Violence Against Architecture: The Lost Cultural Heritage Of Syria And Iraq, Heidi James Fisher Feb 2017

Violence Against Architecture: The Lost Cultural Heritage Of Syria And Iraq, Heidi James Fisher

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis examines ancient architecture within Syria and Iraq that has been deliberately destroyed by violence. The act of destroying architecture and monuments in both Syria and Iraq, which is often-historical UNESCO protected, will invariably violate various laws, such as the 1954 Hague Convention or the Rome Statute. Since post-2011 Syria, all of humanity has been shocked by continuous warfare that, in addition to causing untold loss of human life and suffering, has included a series of episodes of violence against architecture, all of which is so egregious that foreign governments and non government organizations are constantly engaged in efforts …

Transcriptional And Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Histone Variant H2a.Z During Sea Urchin Development, Mihai Hajdu Feb 2017

Transcriptional And Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Histone Variant H2a.Z During Sea Urchin Development, Mihai Hajdu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Histone variant H2A.Z promotes chromatin accessibility at transcriptional regulatory elements and is developmentally regulated in metazoans. We characterize the transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of H2A.Z in the purple sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. H2A.Z depletion by antisense translation-blocking morpholino oligonucleotides during early development causes developmental collapse, in agreement with its previously demonstrated general role in transcriptional multipotency. During H2A.Z peak expression in 24-h embryos, endogenous H2A.Z 3’ UTR sequences stabilize GFP mRNAs relative to those with SV40 3’ UTR sequences, although the 3’UTR of H2A.Z does not determine the spatial distribution of H2A.Z transcripts during embryonic and postembryonic development. We …
