Returns To Tilapia Fish Farming In Ghana – Implications For Tilapia Pooled Investment Vehicles, Kwami Adanu, Mawufemor Adanu

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In Ghana, the private sector’s response to financing constraints associated with aquaculture investment has been to employ Pooled Investment Vehicles (PIVs). Unfortunately, several of these PIVs faced insolvency with huge losses to investors as returns promised investors turn out to be unrealizable. The premise of this study is that such insolvency problems occur mainly because of the lack of reliable data on likely returns and risk associated with Tilapia farm investments. This study improves on the “single value” profitability estimates of previous studies by performing Value at Risk (VaR) analyses on estimated farm-level returns, and 5,000 Monte Carlo simulation …

Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Diaphragm Muscle Precedes The Cachectic Phenotype In Llc Tumor-Bearing Mice., Conner A. Benson, David E. Lee, Jacob L. Brown, Megan E. Rosa-Caldwell, Tyrone A. Washington, Nicholas P. Greene, Michael P. Wiggs

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The defining feature of cancer cachexia is extensive weight loss and skeletal muscle atrophy. It is clinically important because cachexia reduces patient survival, results in functional impairment, and is estimated to be directly responsible for 20-40% of cancer deaths. Unfortunately, no clinical therapy exists and therefore, it is important to understand the molecular mechanisms responsible for rapid muscle wasting. Compared to limb muscles, the diaphragm is relatively understudied in cancer cachexia, but is likely to be adversely affected because cachexia is a systemic disease. Wasting of the primary inspiratory muscle may result in difficulty breathing and inability to adjust minute …

Pharmacological Inhibition Of Mtor And Erk1/2 Resulted In Attenuated Protein Synthesis Rates In Differentiated C2c12 Myoblasts In A Similar Fashion To In Vivo Rodent Studies., John W. Deaver, Colleen L. O'Reilly, Stephen F. Crouse, James D. Fluckey Feb 2017

Pharmacological Inhibition Of Mtor And Erk1/2 Resulted In Attenuated Protein Synthesis Rates In Differentiated C2c12 Myoblasts In A Similar Fashion To In Vivo Rodent Studies., John W. Deaver, Colleen L. O'Reilly, Stephen F. Crouse, James D. Fluckey

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Fractional protein synthesis rates have long been used as in indicator of acute alterations in the anabolic state of various tissues. Through the use of a number of stable and isotopic tracer methodologies, the measurement of fractional synthesis rates (FSR) in vivo has become a staple of skeletal muscle physiology. Through the application of a deuterium oxide tracer, this project sought to measure pharmacological perturbations in fractional synthesis rates in culture in differentiated C2C12 murine myotubes. PURPOSE: To assess myofibrillar protein FSR in differentiated C2C12 murine myotubes following pharmacological inhibition of rapamycin-sensitive (mTOR) or -insensitive (ERK1/2) pathways, and how …

Characterization Of Protein Metabolism In Undifferentiated And Differentiated Murine Muscle Tissue, Jessica M. Cardin, John W. Deaver, Colleen L. O'Reilly, Stephen F. Crouse, James D. Fluckey

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The emergence of cell culture experiments have greatly expanded the understanding of skeletal muscle physiology. However, there is a paucity of data regarding the behaviors of cells grown in culture at various stages versus in vivo. This preliminary set of studies was designed to assess alterations of anabolic responses between undifferentiated and differentiated muscle tissue in [high] and [low] glucose media along with varying dosages of insulin. Purpose: Determine if there is a disparity in fractional synthesis rates (FSR) between C2C12 myoblasts and myotubes with varying levels of insulin and in [high] (4.5g/L) and [low] glucose (2.75 g/L) media. …

Partial Or Complete Unloading Of Skeletal Muscle Leads To Specific Alterations Of Anabolic Signal Transduction, Colleen L. Oreilly, J William Deaver, Michael P. Wiggs, Florence Lima, Joshua M. Swift, Elizabeth S. Greene, Susan A. Bloomfield, James D. Fluckey Feb 2017

Partial Or Complete Unloading Of Skeletal Muscle Leads To Specific Alterations Of Anabolic Signal Transduction, Colleen L. Oreilly, J William Deaver, Michael P. Wiggs, Florence Lima, Joshua M. Swift, Elizabeth S. Greene, Susan A. Bloomfield, James D. Fluckey

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Consequences of disuse atrophy of skeletal muscle observed during spaceflight on astronaut health and performance are a focal point of space research. Decrements of both muscle mass and protein synthesis rates have been observed with exposure to varying muscle loading environments (1G > partial loading > 0G), and most of the reduced muscle mass can be attributed to diminished rates of synthesis. However, specific mechanisms behind unloading-dependent reductions of protein synthesis are not well defined.

PURPOSE: To determine whether or not alterations of anabolic signal transduction was responsible for the changes previously observed in fractional synthesis rates with specific gravitational loading …

Adaptive Non-Inferiority Margins Under Observable Non-Constancy, Brett S. Hanscom, Deborah J. Donnell, Brian D. Williamson, Jim Hughes Feb 2017

Adaptive Non-Inferiority Margins Under Observable Non-Constancy, Brett S. Hanscom, Deborah J. Donnell, Brian D. Williamson, Jim Hughes

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

A central assumption in the design and conduct of non-inferiority trials is that the active-control therapy will have the same degree of effectiveness in the planned non-inferiority trial as it had in the prior placebo-controlled trials used to define the non-inferiority margin. This is referred to as the `constancy' assumption. If the constancy assumption fails, the chosen non-inferiority margin is not valid and the study runs the risk of approving an inferior product or failing to approve a beneficial product. The constancy assumption cannot be validated in a trial without a placebo arm, and it is unlikely ever to be …

In Vivo Pharmacological Evaluations Of Pilocarpine-Loaded Antioxidant-Functionalized Biodegradable Thermogels In Glaucomatous Rabbits, Shih-Feng Chou, Li-Jyuan Luo, Jui-Yang Lai

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

To alleviate oxidative stress-induced ocular hypertension, grafting of antioxidant molecules to drug carriers enables a dual-function mechanism to effectively treat glaucomatous intraocular pressure (IOP) dysregulation. Providing potential application for intracameral administration of antiglaucoma medications, this study, for the first time, aims to examine in vivo pharmacological efficacy of pilocarpine-loaded antioxidant-functionalized biodegradable thermogels in glaucomatous rabbits. A series of gallic acid (GA)-grafted gelatin-g-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (GN) polymers were synthesized via redox reactions at 20-50 °C. Our results showed that raising redox radical initiation reaction temperature maximizes GA grafting level, antioxidant activity, and water content at 40 °C. Meanwhile, increase in overall hydrophilicity of …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Soya bean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is sought after for both its oil and protein components. Genetic approaches to add value to either component are ongoing efforts in soya bean breeding and molecular biology programmes. The former is the primary vegetable oil consumed in the world. Hence, its primary usage is in direct human consumption. As a means to increase its utility in feed applications, thereby expanding the market of soya bean coproducts, we investigated the simultaneous displacement of marine ingredients in aquafeeds with soya bean-based protein and a high Omega-3 fatty acid soya bean oil, enriched with alpha-linolenic …

How Do Undergraduate Stem Mentors Reflect Upon Their Mentoring Experiences In An Outreach Program Engaging K-8 Youth?, Kari L. Nelson, Jamie Sabel, Cory Forbes, Neal Grandgenett, William E. Tapprich, Christine E. Cutucache

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: Many university students are becoming involved in mentoring programs, yet few studies describe the impact of mentoring on the mentor. Additionally, many studies report that students graduating from college are not prepared to enter the workforce in terms of key career skills and/or content knowledge. Herein, we examine the impact of our program, NE STEM 4U (Nebraska Science, Technology, Engineering and Math for You), in which undergraduate (UG) mentors engage K-8 youth in after-school STEM experiments. The UGs reflected upon their experiences using post-mentoring evaluations, 12- and 24-week interviews, and exit surveys. Many of the questions asked of …

Assessing The Ecological Coherence Of A Marine Protected Area Network In The Celtic Seas, Nicola L. Foster, Sian Rees, Olivia Langmead, Charly Griffiths, Jenny Oates, Martin J. Attrill

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are a management tool used to respond to human-derived threats in marine ecosystems. Historically, MPAs have been established on an individual ad hoc basis, rather than through a systematic, planned process. However, high levels of functional and spatial connectivity within marine ecosystems have led to the suggestion that networks of MPAs provide greater ecological benefits than individual MPAs. Consequently, international policy has developed to consider broader spatial requirements for marine conservation, resulting in a number of international and regional agreements that require the establishment of ecologically coherent MPA networks. Existing MPAs are now being considered, retrospectively, …

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

The signaling of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is essential for the maintenance of normal cellular function. However, whether and how ROS regulate stem cells are unclear. Here, we demonstrate that, in transgenic mice expressing the human manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) gene, a scavenger of ROS in mitochondria, the number and function of mouse hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPC) under physiological conditions are enhanced. Importantly, giving MnTnBuOE-2-PyP5+(MnP), a redox- active MnSOD mimetic, to mouse primary bone marrow cells or to C57B/L6 mice significantly enhances the number of HSPCs. Mechanistically, MnP reduces superoxide to hydrogen peroxide, which activates intracellular Nrf2 signaling …

Blubber Transciptome Response To Acute Stress Axis Activation Involves Transient Charges In Adipogenesis And Lipolysis In Fast-Adapted Marine Mammal, J. I. Khudyakov, C. D. Champagne, L. M. Meneghetti, D. E. Crocker Feb 2017

Blubber Transciptome Response To Acute Stress Axis Activation Involves Transient Charges In Adipogenesis And Lipolysis In Fast-Adapted Marine Mammal, J. I. Khudyakov, C. D. Champagne, L. M. Meneghetti, D. E. Crocker

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Stress can compromise an animal's ability to conserve metabolic stores and participate in energy-demanding activities that are critical for fitness. Understanding how wild animals, especially those already experiencing physiological extremes (e.g. fasting), regulate stress responses is critical for evaluating the impacts of anthropogenic disturbance on physiology and fitness, key challenges for conservation. However, studies of stress in wildlife are often limited to baseline endocrine measurements and few have investigated stress effects in fasting-adapted species. We examined downstream molecular consequences of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation by exogenous adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in blubber of northern elephant seals due to the ease of …

Road Ecology: Shifting Gears Toward Evolutionary Perspectives, Steven P. Brady, Jonathan L. Richardson Feb 2017

Road Ecology: Shifting Gears Toward Evolutionary Perspectives, Steven P. Brady, Jonathan L. Richardson

Dartmouth Scholarship

Recent advances in understanding the often rapid pace of evolution are reshaping our view of organisms and their capacity to cope with environmental change. Though evolutionary perspectives have gained traction in many fields of conservation, road ecology is not among them. This is surprising because roads are pervasive landscape features that generate intense natural selection. The biological outcomes from these selection pressures – whether adaptive or maladaptive – can have profound consequences for population persistence. We argue that studying evolutionary responses is critical to accurately understand the impacts of roads. Toward that end, we describe the basic tenets and relevance …

The Impact Of Parents Having Health Insurance On Their Children’S Health Care, Andrea Bennett Feb 2017

The Impact Of Parents Having Health Insurance On Their Children’S Health Care, Andrea Bennett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Abstract of the Dissertation

This study examines the impact of parents having health insurance on their children’s health care in Kentucky. Child health insurance status and child a usual source of medical care are the two health care measures analyzed. The author builds on prior research that indicated more children would become insured if parents had access to affordable health insurance options. Through the implementation of the ACA in 2014, Kentucky expanded Medicaid eligibility to low-income adults up to 138% of the federal poverty level (FPL) and offered discounts on private health insurance plans for families in certain income thresholds …

Use Of Erroneous Wolf Generation Time In Assessments Of Domestic Dog And Human Evolution, L. David Mech Feb 2017

Use Of Erroneous Wolf Generation Time In Assessments Of Domestic Dog And Human Evolution, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Scientific interest in dog domestication and parallel evolution of dogs and humans (1) has increased recently (2-4), and various important conclusions have been drawn based on how long ago the calculations show dogs were domesticated from ancestral wolves (Canis lupus). According to Skoglund et al. (2015:3), calculation of this duration is based on “the most commonly assumed mutation rate of 1 x 10-8 per generation and a 3-year gray wolf generation time . . .” (5). It is unclear on what information the assumed generation time is based, but the latest paper (6) seems to have based generation time on …
