Synthesis Of Novel, Highly Bio-Based Monomeric Materials Derived From Lignocellulosic Biomass And Their Respective Epoxy Resins, Polycarbonates, And Polyesters, Joseph Randall Mauck
Theses and Dissertations
The development of high performance polymers from renewable feedstocks is a crucial step toward a global economy that is less dependent on fossil resources and has been a field of increasing study. The development of novel and interesting bio-based monomers, resins, and functional building blocks is critical to the improvement of polymers produced across the field, as well as to increasing the resource base from which chemical and materials engineers can draw to meet specific polymer property requirements. To this end, interesting tri-functional (trisguaiacol) and 4-vinyl guaiacol based hetero-difunctional monomers were developed and screened for preliminary polymer properties. The applications …

On November 27, 2014, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries met in Vienna and adopted a bold stance against increasing supply from beyond the reach of the cartel. Rather than reduce their own production, the cartel decided to allow market forces to dictate the price of a barrel of oil. By doing this, Saudi Arabia-the de-facto leader of the cartel-made a bet that the burgeoning shale gas industry within the United States would be unable to cope with a sharp fall in the price of oil. Over the course of the following two years, the U.S. energy sector-aided by further …

Subsurface habitats harbor novel diversity that has received little attention until recently. Accessible subsurface habitats include lava caves around the world that often support extensive microbial mats on ceilings and walls in a range of colors. Little is known about lava cave microbial diversity and how these subsurface mats differ from microbial communities in overlying surface soils. To investigate these differences, we analyzed bacterial 16S rDNA from 454 pyrosequencing from three colors of microbial mats (tan, white, and yellow) from seven lava caves in Lava Beds National Monument, CA, USA, and compared them with surface soil overlying each cave. The …

© 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Neural communication depends on release and reception of different neurotransmitters within complex circuits that ultimately mediate basic biological functions. We mapped the distribution of glutamatergic, GABAergic, and cholinergic neurons in the brain of the African cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni using in situ hybridization to label vesicular glutamate transporters (vglut1, vglut2.1, vglut3), glutamate decarboxylases (gad1, gad2), and choline acetyltransferase (chat). Cells expressing the glutamatergic markers vgluts 1–3 show primarily nonoverlapping distribution patterns, with the most widespread expression observed for vglut2.1, and more restricted expression of vglut1 and vglut3. vglut1 is prominent in granular layers of the …

Context can drastically influence responses to environmental stimuli. For example, a gunshot should provoke a different response at a public park than a shooting range. Little is known about how contextual processing and neural correlates change across human development or about individual differences related to early environmental experiences. Children (N = 60; 8–19 years, 24 exposed to interpersonal violence) completed acon text encoding task during fMRI scanning using a delayed match-to-sample design with neutral, happy, and angry facial cues embedded in realistic background scenes. Outside the scanner, participants completed a memory test for context-face pairings. Context memory and neural correlates …

© 2017 The Author(s). Klebsiella pneumoniae causes severe lung and bloodstream infections that are difficult to treat due to multidrug resistance. We hypothesized that antimicrobial resistance can be reversed by targeting chromosomal non-essential genes that are not responsible for acquired resistance but essential for resistant bacteria under therapeutic concentrations of antimicrobials. Conditional essentiality of individual genes to antimicrobial resistance was evaluated in an epidemic multidrug-resistant clone of K. pneumoniae (ST258). We constructed a high-density transposon mutant library of >430,000 unique Tn5 insertions and measured mutant depletion upon exposure to three clinically relevant antimicrobials (colistin, imipenem or ciprofloxacin) by Transposon Directed …

Security Council Resolution 2178 (2014): An Ineffective Response To The Foreign Terrorist Fighter Phenomenon, Cory Kopitzke
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
Thousands of foreign terrorist fighters poured into the Middle East from almost every country across the globe. Radicalized by professionally edited videos and propaganda disseminated through the Internet, people from all walks of life were captivated by the Islamic State's rhetoric, and nations were struggling to figure out how to stop them. One solution came in the form of a United Nations Security Council Resolution- Resolution 2178 (2014). This resolution is directed specifically at foreign terrorist fighters and calls upon all Member States to act with haste to address this new phenomenon. Critics were quick to call into question the …

In this research, a new electrochemical biosensor was constructed for the glucose detection. Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4) were synthesized through co-precipitation method. Polyvinyl alcohol-Fe3O4 nanocomposite was prepared by dispersing synthesized nanoparticles in the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution. Glucose oxidase (GOx) was immobilized on the PVA-Fe3O4 nanocomposite via physical adsorption. The mixture of PVA, Fe3O4 nanoparticles and GOx was drop cast on a tin (Sn) electrode surface (GOx/PVA-Fe3O4/Sn). The Fe3O4 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Also, Fourier transform infrared …

Snail1, a key transcription factor of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), is subjected to ubiquitination and degradation, but the mechanism by which Snail1 is stabilized in tumours remains unclear. We identify Dub3 as a bona fide Snail1 deubiquitinase, which interacts with and stabilizes Snail1. Dub3 is overexpressed in breast cancer; knockdown of Dub3 resulted in Snail1 destabilization, suppressed EMT and decreased tumour cell migration, invasion, and metastasis. These effects are rescued by ectopic Snail1 expression. IL-6 also stabilizes Snail1 by inducing Dub3 expression, the specific inhibitor WP1130 binds to Dub3 and inhibits the Dub3-mediating Snail1 stabilization in vitroand in vivo. …

This work considered the effect of increasing Strontium ion (Sr2+) content on the structure of a series of glasses based on the B2O3-P2O5-CaCO3-Na2CO3-TiO2-SrCO3 series and their resultant fracture toughness when coated onto a surgical metal substrate. Six glasses with increasing Sr2+ content (0 to 25 mol%) were synthesized and subsequently characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and both Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (MAS-NMR) and Raman Spectroscopy. These techniques confirmed that increased Sr2+ content induced …

Background. A Nugent score > 7 has been defined as the gold standard for the diagnosis for bacterial vaginosis (BV), though it is resource intensive and impractical as point of care testing. We sought to determine if colorimetric assessment of vaginal pH can accurately predict the occurrence of BV. Methods. We performed a planned subanalysis of 1,216 pregnant women between 13 0/7 and 19 6/7 weeks who underwent vaginal examination as part of a randomized controlled trial. Using a standardized technique, specimens were obtained for colorimetric assessment and two separate slides for Gram staining. These slides were subsequently evaluated by two …

There are parameter variation effects that would reduce the performance of missile terminal guidance system, e.g., target maneuverability, missile autopilot time constant, turning rate time constant as well as radome slope error effects. To solve this problem this research proposed a novel neural-fuzzy missile terminal guidance law by applying three different neural network optimization algorithms alternatively in each step, such as the Gradient Descent (GD), SCG (Scaled Conjugate Gradient), and Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) methods. Moreover, the missile turning rate time constant, autopilot time delay, target maneuverability, glint and fading noises, radome slope error, missile initial heading error as well as acceleration …

Numerical Simulation Of Solitary Wave Propagation In A Vegetated Channel Using An Extended Boussinesq Model, Mingliang Zhang, Huiting Qiao, Yuanyuan Xu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
An explicit one-dimensional model based on the extended Boussinesq equations was established to calculate solitary wave propagation in vegetated and non-vegetated waters. This model adopts a hybrid solution combining the finite difference (FD) and the finite-volume (FV) methods. This hybrid model can also simulate wave propagation as the FV solution of a non-linear shallow water equations (NSWE) model by removing the higher order Boussinesq terms. The resistance force caused by vegetation is added into a source term in the momentum equation. The interface fluxes are evaluated using the Harten-Lax-van Leer (HLL) approximate Riemann solver with reconstruction technique, providing a robust …

Background: Bacteria from the genus Borrelia are known to harbor numerous linear and circular plasmids. We report here a comparative analysis of the nucleotide sequences of 236 plasmids present in fourteen independent isolates of the Lyme disease agent B. burgdorferi.
Results: We have sequenced the genomes of 14 B. burgdorferi sensu stricto isolates that carry a total of 236 plasmids. These individual isolates carry between seven and 23 plasmids. Their chromosomes, the cp26 and cp32 circular plasmids, as well as the lp54 linear plasmid, are quite evolutionarily stable; however, the remaining plasmids have undergone numerous non-homologous and often duplicative recombination …
Mixed Signals: Examining Ethnic Affirmation As A Factor In The Discrimination-Depression Relationship With Multiracial And Monoracial Minority Adolescent Girls, Linda A. Oshin
Master's Theses
Multiracial adolescents are a growing segment of our population, but not much is known about their ethnic-racial identity development. The current study examined ethnic affirmation, a dimension of ethnic-racial identity, and race socialization and their influence in the relationship between perceived group discrimination and depressive symptoms among multiracial (n = 42) and monoracial minority Black (n = 29) and Latina (n = 95) adolescents (M=15.4 years). Results showed that there were no mean differences between multiracial and monoracial adolescents in ethnic affirmation, maternal race/ethnic socialization, or depressive symptoms. Multiracial adolescents reported significantly less perceived discrimination. …

Rights Of Nature And The Political Implications Of Post-Humanist Ecologies, Jaimie Kent
Theses and Dissertations
Several countries have adopted legal frameworks that recognize ‘nature,’ or nonhuman things in ‘nature,’ as rights-bearing entities in their own right. In this thesis, I ask what these laws can tell us about the possible political implications of post-humanist perspectives regarding nonhuman entities and ‘nature.’ To answer this question, I analyze the similarities and differences between recent post-humanist ecological perspectives (Bennett 2010; Latour 2014, 2004) and indigenous imaginaries that informed rights of nature laws in Ecuador, Bolivia, and New Zealand. This comparative analysis reveals a promising path for achieving sustainable relationships with nonhuman entities that promote environmental protection. Finally, I …

Parasites are ubiquitous throughout nature and can have dramatic effects on their hosts. Although much is known about the pathology of parasites, the environmental factors influencing the distribution and abundance of parasites are poorly understood. Investigations into these factors could help predict the effect of parasites on the functioning of ecosystems. The limpet Patella vulgata is a key grazer on European rocky shores and is the first intermediate host for the trematode parasite, Echinostephilla patellae. This study investigated the spatial distribution of E. patellae in relation to P. vulgata at fourteen rocky shores around Ireland. Despite P. vulgata recruiting into …
