Aporinellus Banks, Austrochares Banks and Dicranoplius Haupt are new generic records for Colombia, as well as the species Dipogon ariel Banks, Evagetes peruana Banks, and Euplaniceps notabilis (Smith). Five new combinations are formally endorsed: Aimatocare argentinica (Banks), comb. n.;Aimatocare longula (Banks), comb. n.; Aimatocare imitator (Evans), comb. n.; Aimatocare impensa (Evans), comb. n.; Aimato-care vitrea (Fox), comb. n. Although these names have been used in Pompilidae, no formal nomenclatural act had been proposed. The presence of Chirodamus paramicola Roig-Alsina, previously reported with uncertainty, is confirmed. Finally, a new combination for Euplaniceps notabilis (Smith), comb. n. …

BACKGROUND: The DiGeorge syndrome, the most common of the microdeletion syndromes, affects multiple organs, including the heart, the nervous system, and the kidney. It is caused by deletions on chromosome 22q11.2; the genetic driver of the kidney defects is unknown.
METHODS: We conducted a genomewide search for structural variants in two cohorts: 2080 patients with congenital kidney and urinary tract anomalies and 22,094 controls. We performed exome and targeted resequencing in samples obtained from 586 additional patients with congenital kidney anomalies. We also carried out functional studies using zebrafish and mice.
RESULTS: We identified heterozygous deletions of 22q11.2 in 1.1% …

Microsatellite Analysis Of Population Structure In The Santa Ana Speckled Dace (Rhinichthys Osculus): Conservation And Evolution, Stacey Nerkowski
Microsatellite Analysis Of Population Structure In The Santa Ana Speckled Dace (Rhinichthys Osculus): Conservation And Evolution, Stacey Nerkowski
OSRI Journal of Student Research and Innovation
Geographic isolation and habitat fragmentation can cause a population to undergo independent evolutionary trajectories. Stream dwelling vertebrates such as the minnows belonging to the Cyprinidae family, one of the most genetically variable and geographically distributed groups, are excellent models for examining the genetic effects of population isolation and substructure. Rhinichthys osculus, a freshwater minnow, is a local species of concern that inhabits the Santa Ana and San Gabriel watershed systems within the Southern California region. 23 polymorphic microsatellite loci were characterized and identified for Rhinichthys osculus in conjunction with the Savannah River Ecology Lab. These microsatellite loci have been visualized …

Novel Signaling Mechanisms Implicated In Epithelial Mesenchymal Transition And Metastasis Of Human Cancers, Minsoon Kim
Novel Signaling Mechanisms Implicated In Epithelial Mesenchymal Transition And Metastasis Of Human Cancers, Minsoon Kim
Open Access Dissertations
Distant metastases are the leading cause of breast cancer related death. It is important to understand how the metastatic process is regulated in order to develop new therapies that would oppose metastasis and improve cancer outcome. Initiation of metastasis requires cell invasion and escape from the primary tumor into the vasculature followed by colonization of secondary sites. Tumor invasion and intravasation are enabled by the epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process in which epithelial cells lose polarity and intracellular adhesion and acquire motility and invasiveness. This thesis work has revealed novel mechanisms whereby cancer metastasis is regulated via induction of …

Background: HPV infection causes cervical cancer, mediated in part by the degradation of Scribble via the HPV E6 oncoprotein. Recently, Scribble has been shown to be an important regulator of the Hippo signaling cascade. Deregulation of the Hippo pathway induces an abnormal cellular transformation, epithelial to mesenchymal transition, which promotes oncogenic progression. Given the recent rise in oropharyngeal HPV squamous cell carcinoma we sought to determine if Hippo signaling components are implicated in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: Molecular and cellular techniques including immunoprecipiations, Western blotting and immunocytochemistry were used to identify the key Hippo pathway effector Yes-Associated Protein (YAP)1. …

Nurses' Perceptions Of The Image Of The Profession Of Nursing, Lorraine E. Emeghebo
Nurses' Perceptions Of The Image Of The Profession Of Nursing, Lorraine E. Emeghebo
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the evolution of nurses' perceived image of nursing from the time nurses begin their career and through various phases of nursing experience. The image of nursing as perceived by nurses and by the public affects recruitment of new nurses and retention of experienced nurses (Buerhaus, 2000, Irvine & Evans, 1995, Nevidjon & Erickson, 2001). There is a projected deficiency of 800,000 nurses by 2020 (National Center for Health Workforce Analysis, 2002) that has been attributed, in part, to low enrollments and graduations from nursing programs, as well as nurses leaving the profession. …

Mechanisms Of Therapeutic Resistance In Prostate Cancer, Mary Nakazawa, Channing Paller, Natasha Kyprianou
Urology Faculty Publications
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the USA. The challenge in managing castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) stems not from the lack of therapeutic options but from the limited duration of clinical and survival benefit offered by treatments in this setting due to primary and acquired resistance. The remarkable molecular heterogeneity and tumor adaptability in advanced prostate cancer necessitate optimization of such treatment strategies. While the future of CRPC management will involve newer targeted therapies in deliberately biomarker-selected patients, interventions using current approaches may exhibit improved clinical benefit if employed in the context of optimal sequencing …

The Xingu and Tapajós rivers in the eastern Amazon are the largest clearwater systems of the Amazon basin. Both rivers have “fluvial rias” (i.e., lake-like channels) in their downstream reaches as they are naturally impounded by the Amazon mainstem. Fluvial rias are widespread in the Amazon landscape and most of the sedimentary load from the major clearwater and blackwater rivers is deposited in these channels. So far, little is known about the role of Amazon rias as a trap and reactor for organic sediments. In this study, we used organic and inorganic geochemistry, magnetic susceptibility, diatom, and pollen analyses in …

"Hormones and neurotransmitters regulate cell functions by binding to their receptors, which activate intracellular signaling and produce the physiological response [1]. There are several intracellular pathways, including but not limited to, leading to the activation of protein kinases, phosphatases and increase in intracellular calcium (Ca2+) [1]."

In legged terrestrial locomotion, the duration of stance phase, i.e., when limbs are in contact with the substrate, is positively correlated with limb length, and negatively correlated with the metabolic cost of transport. These relationships are well documented at the interspecific level, across a broad range of body sizes and travel speeds. However, such relationships are harder to evaluate within species (i.e., where natural selection operates), largely for practical reasons, including low population variance in limb length, and the presence of confounding factors such as body mass, or training. Here, we compared spatiotemporal kinematics of gait in Longshanks, a long-legged …

Never Underestimate The Power Of Forgiveness, Germayne Graham
Never Underestimate The Power Of Forgiveness, Germayne Graham
UCF Forum
For many people, forgiveness issues may go undetected because they ignore the obvious signs that they have not let go of a past hurt. I believe that in order to experience total freedom in life, one must constantly do a forgiveness check – as I once did with my biological father.

Background: Hyperthermia, i.e., raising tissue temperature to 40-45°C for 60 min, has been demonstrated to increase the effectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy for cancer. Although multi-element conformal heat applicators are under development to provide more adjustable heating of contoured anatomy, to date the most often used applicator to heat superficial disease is the simple microwave waveguide. With only a single power input, the operator must be resourceful to adjust heat treatment to accommodate variable size and shape tumors spreading across contoured anatomy. Methods: We used multiphysics simulation software that couples electromagnetic, thermal and fluid dynamics physics to simulate heating patterns …

By suppressing the expression of genes with essential biological functions, in planta RNAi can negatively affect the development and survival of target pests. As a part of a concerted effort to assess the risks of RNAi transgenic crops on non-target organisms, we developed an in vivo toxicity assay to examine the impacts of ingested dsRNAs incurred to the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus (L.), an iconic eco-indicator in North America. To create the worst case scenario, the full-length v-ATPase A cDNAs from the target pest, western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, and the non-target D. plexippus were respectively cloned.
