Development Of Image Analysis Toolboxes For Biological Imaging, Samia Sanjari
Development Of Image Analysis Toolboxes For Biological Imaging, Samia Sanjari
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of tissue engineering is to regenerate the damaged tissues by using three dimensional porous scaffolds which act as substrates for tissue regeneration. Several studies have showed that structural properties of scaffold (fiber diameter, pore size of scaffold, and fiber orientation) play a significant role in tissue regeneration. Therefore, in order to design a suitable scaffold for tissue engineering application, it is important to understand the structural properties of fibrous scaffold. To achieve this aim in this study, standalone image analysis toolboxes are generated by using the MATLAB software for finding the mean pore size of scaffolds, length, diameter …
A Comparative Study Of Student Achievement In Remedial Math Courses Through Online And Traditional Delivery Modes At Northwest Mississippi Community College, Keith Deon Reed
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study focused on student achievement in remedial math through online and traditional delivery modes at Northwest Mississippi Community College. Student participants were interviewed through a semi-structured interview process to determine perceived influences and challenges that affected success in remedial math courses. The perceived influences and challenges that emerged from interview data were used to comparatively analyze online and traditional classroom modality of instruction. The acquired interview data provided for a systematic process to determine if there was a significant difference in student achievement in remedial math based on modality of instruction. A grounded theory methodology was used as a …

Emulating Natural Disturbance Using Variable Retention Harvest Regimes: Measuring Short-Term Changes In The Avian Community And Understory Nest Survival, Jennifer L. Wilcox
Student Theses and Dissertations
Over the last 200 years, forests of the eastern United States were largely cleared for industrial and agricultural purposes, and subsequent regrowth has resulted in mostly even-aged, closed canopy stands. Furthermore, dynamic ecological conditions including windthrow, ice storms, floods, fires, tree senescence, and insect outbreaks, which are necessary for maintaining healthy forest ecosystem functions and biodiversity, have become infrequent and/or do not have the same effects in contemporary forests as they did in old growth systems. This has partially led to declines in a number of disturbance-dependent and early-successional avian species, and a need for harvest prescriptions that emulate these …
Causes And Consequences Of Range Expansion In The Genus Tyrannus, Alexander Joseph Worm
Causes And Consequences Of Range Expansion In The Genus Tyrannus, Alexander Joseph Worm
Student Theses and Dissertations
Investigating factors that influence species’ ranges and the potential consequences arising from expansion is vital in successfully predicting future distributions. Species-habitat associations are considered to be fixed, but if they are variable, inaccurate forecasts may occur. Additionally, hybridization with heterospecifics can affect species’ ranges, possibly preventing successful expansion. Here, I used two expanding bird species, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher (Tyrannus forticatus) and Western Kingbird (T. verticalis), to assess how differential habitat selection and hybridization may influence range expansion. First, I explored variation in habitat selection behavior of Scissor-tailed Flycatchers by comparing habitat selection patterns at the periphery with the historic core of …
Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (Sers) Substrates And Probes, Srismrita Basu
Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (Sers) Substrates And Probes, Srismrita Basu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Raman spectroscopy is a well-known technique for complex molecular detection. In Raman spectrometry, laser beam is focused on a sample to generate a unique "fingerprint" of the molecule. The Raman signal is very weak. To overcome this problem nano rough metallic substrates are fabricated to enhance the signal strength. In clinical applications, remote contact and minimally invasive probes inside the specimen are needed.
This research work is divided in: (1) development of Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) substrate using gold coated etched aluminum foil, (2) development of the SERS probe using the aluminum based substrate with a single optical fiber …

An Experimental Determination Of The Quasi-Rest Potential Of Copper Indium Disulfide Utilizing The Novel Open-Circuit Voltage Transient, Michael Jason Newell
Student Theses and Dissertations
Environmental sustainability requires resource management that takes future generations into account. The present generation has witnessed changes across the planet, unprecedented in human history and disrupting communities and cities around the world, due to shifting global climate. This is primarily the result of fossil fuels, which powered modern civilization but dramatically increased levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, and may be the least sustainable aspect of human civilization. Chapter 1 justifies the research from an environmental perspective and provides initial research parameters. Thin film photovoltaic (PV) modules are reported the most sustainable among energy production technologies currently available. Electrodeposited …
Primary Care Of Latino Patients In The United States: A Comparative Analysis Of Personal Experiences In Safety-Net Healthcare Organizations, Grant Douglas Tore
Primary Care Of Latino Patients In The United States: A Comparative Analysis Of Personal Experiences In Safety-Net Healthcare Organizations, Grant Douglas Tore
Senior Theses
This thesis aims to compare two types of healthcare organizations that compose the safety-net healthcare system in the United States with the utilization of both personal experiences and extensive research. The first are community health centers, which receive federal funding in order to serve specific populations with in their communities. In my experience, this population was migrant farmworkers, all who came to the United States legally with H2A visas. The second model is that of the free medical clinic, which operates on a volunteer/staff model, but receives no government funding. Serving primarily uninsured patients, free clinics such as the Good …
The Importance Of Planning: Science Education From Many Points Of View, Kirsten Morgan Edwards
The Importance Of Planning: Science Education From Many Points Of View, Kirsten Morgan Edwards
Senior Theses
The purpose of this thesis project was to bridge the divide between public lands, such as parks, and the education system; national parks and monuments are great resources for education. In addition to promoting outside of the classroom education, this project explores different teaching methods and how changing pedagogical practice can help more students learn in the long term. In order to explore different methods of teaching, I created three different lesson plans that could be used, for example, in places like Congaree National Park, to bring education outside of the traditional school environment. These lesson plans are supplemental materials …
Geological Framework Of The Continental Shelf Of South Carolina Winyah Bay: Paleodrainage, Transgressions And Essential Fish Habitat, Amanda Roach
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A regional geophysical survey of the inner continental shelf off central South Carolina was completed on a cooperative cruise between NOAA and Coastal Carolina University in July 2015. An integrated mapping suite comprised of subbottom echosounder, side scan, multibeam and split beam sonars was used to define the regional geologic framework, including paleodrainage patterns across the shelf and to identify potential fish habitat locations that will provide additional inputs to a thematic habitat mapping routine developed by NOAA. Results from the thematic mapper characterization suggest that large-scale framework elements such as paleochannel networks may play a role in determining benthic …
Development Of Molecular Catalysts For Co2 Reduction And Nanomaterial Catalysts For Oxidation Reactions, Kankana Mullick
Development Of Molecular Catalysts For Co2 Reduction And Nanomaterial Catalysts For Oxidation Reactions, Kankana Mullick
Doctoral Dissertations
The thesis presented here is focused on two aspects of transition metal mediated catalysis research- one is designing homogeneous rhenium complex with suitable ligand framework for electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to address dual issues regarding green house gas removal and hydrocarbon fuel production; another being fabrication of heterogeneous mesoporous manganese oxide to catalyze organic fine chemical synthesis under aerobic atmospheric condition. The quest for conquering fossil fuel energy dependence leads us to develop methodologies for using CO2 as a renewable resource. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 has been considered as a promising procedure for this purpose. Coordination complexes …

Fates Of Rare Species Under Siege From Invasion: Persistence Of Coccinella Novemnotata Herbst In Western North America Alongside An Invasive Congener, Edward W. Evans
Biology Faculty Publications
Species invading new geographic regions may threaten continued existence of similar, indigenous relatives, particularly those species whose rarity may reflect an already tenuous existence. The spectacular colonization of North America in recent decades by Coccinella septempunctata L. has generated widespread concern over potentially adverse effects on population viability of native species of ladybird beetles (Coccinellidae). Coccinella novemnotata Herbst in particular has been hypothesized to be at great risk, as this species apparently dwindled in numbers across much of North America during the twentieth century. Here results of sampling diverse habitats over three decades are examined to address the fate of …

Non-Native Mangroves (Rhizophora Mangle) Of Moloka'i, Hawai'i: A Socio-Ecological Analysis, Casey Lynette Lewis
Dissertations and Theses
The formation of novel ecosystems by non-native species poses management challenges that are both socially and ecologically complex. This complexity necessitates consideration of both ecological dynamics and social attitudes and perceptions. Red mangrove propagules were introduced to Moloka'i, Hawaii in 1902 to mitigate the effects of soil erosion and they have since spread along the coast and to adjacent islands creating novel habitat. Non-native mangroves in Hawai'i present a unique case study to examine diverse social attitudes and perceptions resulting from a long history of land cover transformations on the Hawaiian Islands, socio-cultural diversity of involved stakeholders, and the potential …

Optimal Management Of Post-Traumatic Radioulnar Synostosis, Arthur Lee Osterman, Melissa S. Arief
Optimal Management Of Post-Traumatic Radioulnar Synostosis, Arthur Lee Osterman, Melissa S. Arief
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Post-traumatic radioulnar synostosis is a rare complication after forearm or elbow injury that can result in loss of motion and significant disability. Risk factors include aspects of the initial trauma and of the surgical treatment of that trauma. Surgical intervention for synostosis is the standard of care and is determined based on the location of the bony bridge. Surgical timing is recommended between 6 months and 2 years with recent advocacy for the 6- to 12-month period after radiographs demonstrate bony maturation but early enough to prevent further stiffness and contractures. For most types of synostosis, surgical resection with interposition …

The Great Lakes Entomologist
Three new prey families of adult Diptera are presented for Crabro advena, bringing to 14 the total number of fly families captured by this euryphagous wasp. The variety of prey flies used as provisions by this species is probably related to its varied nesting habitat.
Resistance Stability Of The Secondary Tiller Of 'Caldwell' Wheat After The Primary Culm Was Infested With Virulent Hessian Fly (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) Larvae, Stanley G. Wellso, Jaime E. Araya
Resistance Stability Of The Secondary Tiller Of 'Caldwell' Wheat After The Primary Culm Was Infested With Virulent Hessian Fly (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) Larvae, Stanley G. Wellso, Jaime E. Araya
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Secondary tiller resistance of 'Caldwell' wheat, Triticum aestivum, with the H6 gene for larval resistance to Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor, was maintained, after the primary culm had been previously infested with virulent larvae. Earlier studies showed that a primary culm infested initially with a virulent larva allowed subsequent normally avirulent larvae to survive on that cultivar; however, in our study the resistance of secondary tillers was mainained even though the primary culm was infested earlier with virulent Hessian fly larvae. This gene stability for resistance is important for optimizing wheat yield of those cultivars that possess genes resistant to …

Field Investigations On The American Dog Tick, Dermacentor Variabilis, In Northwest Ohio (Acari: Ixodidae), Kelly M. Micher, C. Lee Rockett
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Ecological investigations on the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, were conducted in two metroparks located in Lucas County, Ohio. Adult tick surveys were conducted in 1989 and 1990. For both years, adult tick activity began in late April, and adult ticks were most abundant from early May to mid-June. Observed activity had ceased by early August, producing a unimodal pattern of activity. Sunny days with temperatures between 24 ° and 32°C were most conducive to adult tick activity, and adult ticks were most abundant on grass trails and in meadows. Using nest boxes inhabited by white-footed mice, immature tick …

The Slow Work Of Democracy: Resisting Reductionist Views Of Women And Children, Stephanie C. Serriere
Democracy & Education
In her research article “State your defense!": Children negotiate analytic frames in the context of deliberative dialogue," Hauver offers important contributions to the field of elementary civic education that illuminate how young people apply various analytical frames to make collective decisions. First, I highlight significant contributions of her work, namely children’s capabilities to build perspective-taking through dialogue, which I suggest can be more solidly grounded in a sociocultural framework, not a developmental one. Second, I offer suggestions toward such a theoretical framework that loosens determinism for children’s development and offers a less deterministic framework for women. My review seeks …
Countering The Neos: Dewey And A Democratic Ethos In Teacher Education, Jamie C. Atkinson
Countering The Neos: Dewey And A Democratic Ethos In Teacher Education, Jamie C. Atkinson
Democracy & Education
Neoliberalism and neoconservatism are two ideologies that currently plague education. The individualistic free-market ideology of neoliberalism and the unbridled nationalistic exceptionalism associated with neoconservatism often breed a narrowed, overstandardized curriculum and a hyper-testing environment that discourage critical intellectual practice and democratic ideas. Dewey’s philosophy of education indicates that he understood that education is political and can be undemocratic. Dewey’s holistic pragmatism, combined with aspects of social reconstructionism, called for a philosophical movement that favors democratic schooling. This paper defines neoliberal and neoconservative ideologies and makes a case for including more critique within teacher preparation programs, what Dewey and other educationists …

Learning Social Skills Through Natural And Paid Supports, Miyah Sundermeyer
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
With 1 in 68 individuals living with autism, most are born with parts of the brain that pick up on social skills. While these skills can be taught, individuals with autism extra special support in learning in this area. Social skills can be taught in two different types of supports being that they are paid and natural supports. Furthermore, social skill styles can be taught through other methods such as the internet.
