Transnormativity And The Visual Hierarchies Of Acceptance, Katie Mcbride
Transnormativity And The Visual Hierarchies Of Acceptance, Katie Mcbride
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper presents a critical analysis of the subjective, symbolic, and systemic harmsexperienced as hate by transgender individuals. An analysis of the lived experiences oftransgender individuals in this way illustrates how neoliberal discourses create and sustain a hierarchy of acceptable forms of self-identity for transgender individuals that is transnormative. The data presented is drawn from my doctoral research and was obtained using in-depth qualitative interview methods that generated thick descriptions and reflections of the lived experiences of individuals. The research incorporated the use of visual narrative methods that helped to elucidate the role of symbolic and systemic harm in the shaping …

Cracking Down: A Longitudinal Study Of The Judiciary's Changing War On Drugs, Jennifer P. Schrauth
Cracking Down: A Longitudinal Study Of The Judiciary's Changing War On Drugs, Jennifer P. Schrauth
Honors Capstones
In the United States, drugs continue to be a longstanding problem, causing the addictions and deaths of millions of people. Although drug and drug epidemic trends change with the passage of time, their similarly harmful effects on humanity and society have remained the same. Through drug rehabilitation, particularly Drug Courts, a great deal of the chaos caused by drugs has been stopped. Through research, including the examination of studies, facts, epidemics, drug trends over time, and personal experience working with judges who have helped to create Drug Courts, I conclude that adaptability and group effort were the key pieces in …

Identification And Quantification Of Cyanide And Its Metabolites In Lemur Urine, Jeremy Peralta
Identification And Quantification Of Cyanide And Its Metabolites In Lemur Urine, Jeremy Peralta
Student Theses
Cyanide is a chemical compound that contains the monovalent groups of carbon and nitrogen. This substance is considered a rapidly acting deadly chemical. However, some animals such as lemurs consume food products that are known to contain elevated levels of cyanide without major consequences. The mechanism by which the lemur can handle this high exposure to cyanide is unknown. In this study, we developed and validated two analytical methods for the determination of cyanide and two metabolites, thiocyanate and 2-aminothiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (ATCA) in lemur urine. The method was applied to 47 authentic lemur urine samples collected from 4 different species …
The Effects Of The First Year Of Implementation Of Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports, Rosalind Flanigan Operton
The Effects Of The First Year Of Implementation Of Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports, Rosalind Flanigan Operton
Theses and Dissertations
Disciplinary practices and protocols in schools have been a notable concern over the past 30 years. The traditional punitive punishment-based tactics have not proven to be effective in changing student behavior. Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) is a proactive alternative that puts whole school systems in a place wherein students and teachers share in the responsibility of building a culture and climate of behaviors that produce positive outcomes. Research based on the implementation of PBIS in schools has concluded that problem behaviors decrease, students and staff feel safe, and attendance improves. There is a body of research that concludes that …
Race, Drugs, And Sentencing: A Quantitative Analysis Of Sentencing Outcomes For Federal Cocaine And Methamphetamine Drug Offenses, Makeela Johari Wells
Race, Drugs, And Sentencing: A Quantitative Analysis Of Sentencing Outcomes For Federal Cocaine And Methamphetamine Drug Offenses, Makeela Johari Wells
Theses and Dissertations
For decades, the United States has fought a “War on Drugs” with no success. This war has led to substantial increases in the number of individuals incarcerated in the United States prison system. The following dissertation investigates the impact of the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010 (FSA 2010) on sentencing decisions for crack and powder cocaine offenders sentenced in the federal system. The FSA 2010 is a federal policy that reduced the crack-to-powder cocaine quantity from 100-to1 to 18-to-1 in an effort to reduce racial/ethnic disparity in sentencing associated with harsh penalties. Specifically, I examined federal crack cocaine and powder …
How Regimes Shape Organized Crime: Mexico And Russia During Political Transitions, Yulia Vorobyeva
How Regimes Shape Organized Crime: Mexico And Russia During Political Transitions, Yulia Vorobyeva
Open Access Dissertations
The cases of Russia and Mexico, where deadly and violent organized crime erupted during transitions from authoritarian rule, suggest that political regimes may determine the type of organized crime in a society. This assertion runs counter to the common view of organized crime as a powerful corrosive force that undermines the vitality of democratizing regimes. Why did not democratization strengthen the rule of law in Mexico and Russia, two countries where concurrent processes of economic and political liberalization occurred in the last decade of the 20th century? Why did Russian organized crime become less violent and more controllable after Russia …
Domestic Violence In The National Football League, James Coyne
Domestic Violence In The National Football League, James Coyne
Sport Management Undergraduate
This study was conducted to examine the relationship that existed between domestic violence incidents involving National Football League (NFL) players and the popularity of the league. With more media coverage on players’ off the field exploits there was potential that players committing crimes as heinous as domestic violence was having an impact on how fans consumed the NFL’s products. This was initially sparked by the widely publicized incident featuring former Baltimore Ravens running back, Ray Rice. As the league struggled to figure out on how to best handle player discipline for domestic violence the public opinion of the NFL diminished. …

Identifying Victims Of Human Trafficking Within Health Care Settings, University Of Michigan Law School
Event Materials
Program for a December 2017 Problem Solving Initiative at the University of Michigan Law School on the topic of identifying human trafficking victims in health care settings.
It is estimated that up to one third of all victims of human trafficking come into contact with a health care provider during their trafficking and are unrecognized. Health care settings offer a unique opportunity to identify victims of human trafficking and connect them with services and support. In a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting, students were tasked with developing innovations to increase the identification of victims of human trafficking in health care settings.

This article contains seven micro-cases, each of which highlights a discussion of communication and cultural impact. The cases range from issues related to handshakes, communication with powerful people, collaborating in a divergent culture, unintended impact in meetings, and regional pronunciation differences. The cases include discussion questions, references for additional reading, and one unique feature: a “bumper sticker” summary. The article features a section on Approaching the Challenges. Revisiting The Voluntariness Of Confessions After State V. Sawyer, Michael Theodore Bigos
Revisiting The Voluntariness Of Confessions After State V. Sawyer, Michael Theodore Bigos
Maine Law Review
Every individual in our society needs confidence in our criminal justice system to know that one cannot be convicted of a crime unless a fact finder is convinced of every necessary element with the highest assurances of the truth. The process of establishing facts in a criminal trial is highly dependent upon how decision-making power is allocated between the judge and the jury and upon the fairness of that allocation. This Note discusses the areas of confession law and burdens of proof in the context of how federal criminal constitutional doctrines that affect the fact-finding process offer less than clear …

More Of The Same: Elitism And Exclusion At The Aals Annual Meeting, David E. Steinberg
Maine Law Review
At the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) meetings and in materials published by the Association, probably no one word appears more frequently than “diversity.” For example, the theme of the 2000 AALS Annual Meeting was A Recommitment to Diversity. In a 1986 essay titled Collegial Diversity, AALS President Susan Westerberg Prager wrote: “The different perspectives of our colleagues can illuminate other areas of research to give us new classroom direction.” And, in a 1996 statement on diversity adopted by the AALS Executive Committee, the committee stated that an objective of diversity was “to create an educational community—and ultimately a …

Economic Integration For Individuals In The Refugee Resettlement Program, University Of Michigan Law School
Event Materials
A program for a December 2017 Problem Solving Initiative by the University of Michigan Law School on the topic of economic integration of refugees and victims of human trafficking during and after resettlement.
Both refugees and foreign national victims of human trafficking are eligible for refugee resettlement benefits. How can these benefits be optimized to increase individual economic empowerment and economic development for the communities in which these individuals are resettled? Students in this class were tasked with developing innovations to facilitate the economic integration of refugees and victims of human trafficking both during and after the resettlement process.
