Charles A. Moose: Race, Community Policing, And Portland's First African American Police Chief, Douglas Jon Kenck-Crispin
Charles A. Moose: Race, Community Policing, And Portland's First African American Police Chief, Douglas Jon Kenck-Crispin
Dissertations and Theses
In 1993, Charles Moose became Portland, Oregon's first black police chief. A nationally recognized student of the developing theories of community policing, Chief Moose's promotion was also hoped to help strengthen the diversity of the Portland Police Bureau. Ultimately, Portlanders were unable to look past Moose's public outbursts and demeanor and recognize his accomplishments. As a city, they missed an opportunity.
This thesis uses transcripts of speeches and policy papers to present some political history to the reader, but also letters to the mayor's office, letters to the editor and the like to consider the social history of 1990's Portland. …

The Status Of Women In Utah Politics: A 2017 Update, Susan R. Madsen, D. Candice Pierucci
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
In 2014, the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) released four research and policy briefs on the status of women in Utah politics, education, nonprofits, and business. These were initially prompted by the Center for American Progress report titled “The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation” that ranked Utah last in terms of women being in positions of decision making and leadership. Soon after, a series of other national reports also gave Utah poor rankings, and most used the following four criteria: 1) gender wage gap, 2) educational attainment, 3) …

Public Health Framing And Attribution: Analysis Of The First Lady’S Remarks And News Coverage On Childhood Obesity, Jennifer A. Andersen, Lindsey Wylie, Eve M. Brank
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
First Lady Michelle Obama’s public health promotion “Let’s Move” seeks to place children on a path to better health by giving families access to health education and fostering healthier environments. We examined the use of public health framing and attribution of responsibility in the First Lady’s remarks and newspaper articles reporting on childhood obesity. We coded the Whitehouse.gov website for remarks made by the First Lady regarding the childhood obesity prevention program “Let’s Move.” Of the 103 remarks coded, 35% of the remarks used public health framing. The First Lady’s remarks attributed responsibility and solutions for the childhood obesity crisis …

Social Work (Graduate) Faculty Publications
Social justice has long been at the forefront of the core values of the social work profession. Social workers are charged to confront social injustices and advocate for social change. In 2014, there was a societal response across the United States to the deaths of two African-American men, Mike Brown and Eric Garner, and the decision to not indict the police officers who killed them. The collective reaction was reflective of a country unsettled by the criminal justice system’s ongoing acceptance of structural discrimination. This article will focus on one university’s social work faculty’s collective response to the brutal killings …

Sec Enforcement Attorneys: Should I Stay Or Should I Go?, Adam C. Pritchard, Stephen J. Choi
Law & Economics Working Papers
We examine the career paths of attorneys in the Enforcement Division at the SEC. Using a variety of performance metrics, we find evidence that long term lawyers and lawyers in regional offices do not perform as well as other SEC attorneys. We also report that men and women may differ in their career paths in this field. We find that early-stage female attorneys perform just as well as male attorneys. Notwithstanding their comparable performance, these early-stage women are less likely to get a raise or promotion. We find that women are more likely to stay at the SEC, at least …
War On Drugs: A Prophetic Mission Of Resisting Evil, Albert E. Alejo, Manuel V. Francisco, Jojo M. Fung
War On Drugs: A Prophetic Mission Of Resisting Evil, Albert E. Alejo, Manuel V. Francisco, Jojo M. Fung
Landas
This article critically examines the moral, theological, and human rights crises emerging from the violent "War on Drugs" campaign. Writing from a contextual Philippine perspective, the authors challenge state-sanctioned violence and extrajudicial killings by framing opposition as an imperative Christian duty. Grounded in Catholic social teaching and liberation theology, the paper argues that the Church must reclaim its prophetic mission to voice the plight of the marginalized and actively resist systemic evil. Ultimately, it calls for a pastoral approach rooted in restorative justice, human dignity, and communal healing rather than punitive bloodshed.
The Italian Enlightenment And The American Revolution: Cesare Beccaria’S Forgotten Influence On American Law, John Bessler
The Italian Enlightenment And The American Revolution: Cesare Beccaria’S Forgotten Influence On American Law, John Bessler
Journal of Public Law and Policy
The influence of the Italian Enlightenment—the Illuminismo—on the American Revolution has long been neglected. While historians regularly acknowledge the influence of European thinkers such as William Blackstone, John Locke and Montesquieu, Cesare Beccaria’s contributions to the origins and development of American law have largely been forgotten by twenty-first century Americans. In fact, Beccaria’s book, Dei delitti e delle pene (1764), translated into English as On Crimes and Punishments (1767), significantly shaped the views of American revolutionaries and lawmakers. The first four U.S. Presidents—George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison—were inspired by Beccaria’s treatise and, in some cases, …

Where Are They Now(?): Two Decades Of Longitudinal Outcome Assessment Data Linking Positive Student, Graduate Student, Career And Life Trajectory Decisions To Participation In Intercollegiate Competitive Debate, Jack E. Rogers, Nicole P. M. Freeman, Arthur R. Rennels
National Forensic Journal
In 1997, Rogers (2002, 2007) launched an ambitious cohort-based study to specifically measure student outcomes from forensic participation with direct, empirical comparisons between a debate and non-debate group over an extended period through college, graduate school, professional careers, and life-trajectory decisions. This monograph offers a continuation of those earlier studies in order to provide almost two decades of empirical performance data and outcomes. In order for the reader to place the current study in context, it is helpful to review a brief update of the applicable literature and a brief explanation of the previous two studies before attempting to interpret …

The Presence Of Compassion Fatigue In The Private Practice Setting, Santisha Lynette Walker
The Presence Of Compassion Fatigue In The Private Practice Setting, Santisha Lynette Walker
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Nurses play an intricate role in healthcare and may carry a burden while providing patient care. Bearing this burden could lead to a significant level of stress, which in turn could cause compassion fatigue. Many nurses face issues of stress and fatigue during their daily nursing practice, lending to unsafe conditions for patients and a decrease in quality of life. The purpose of this study was to assess nurses’ perception of the presence of compassion fatigue for nurses working in the private practice setting. This quantitative study, guided by the Neuman Systems Model, consisted of a non-randomized convenience sample of …

What Is The Cause For The Suspension Disparity Between Caucasians And Students Of Color, Pamela Marie Beatty
What Is The Cause For The Suspension Disparity Between Caucasians And Students Of Color, Pamela Marie Beatty
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to showcase the ineffectiveness of suspension upon students and to illustrate the disparity in the use of suspension and expulsion towards African American students when compared to their peers. Studies show that although African Americans make up a small portion of the student population, they make up a majority of the suspended student population. The impact of suspension and expulsion on African Americans can leave them alienated and severely hamper not only the academic future of the students, but also the adult future. Research shows that students who are frequently suspended have lower wages, …
Trauma Sensitive Schools, Maria Bowker
Trauma Sensitive Schools, Maria Bowker
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent research has shown that an astounding number of children have faced adverse childhood experiences. Due to this fact, many of the students sitting in American classrooms have traumatic backgrounds that can cause a variety of side effects including a lack of academic focus, depression, PTSD, and low social-emotional abilities. Schools are the perfect place to implement trauma sensitive frameworks to provide these students an accessible education. Effective trauma sensitive schools are relational, empowering, and consistent. With these traits, research has shown that depression and PTSD symptoms can be reduced, behavior problems can be decreased, and attendance can increase.
Teaching And Un-Teaching Source Evaluation: Questioning Authority In Information Literacy Instruction, Katelyn Angell, Eamon Tewell
Teaching And Un-Teaching Source Evaluation: Questioning Authority In Information Literacy Instruction, Katelyn Angell, Eamon Tewell
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
This study details the design of library instruction sessions for undergraduate students that intended to encourage critical source evaluation and the questioning of established authorities, and appraises these instructional aims through a thematic analysis of 148 artifacts containing student responses to group and individual activities. The authors found a widespread reliance on traditional indicators of academic and scholarly authority, though some students expressed more personal or complex understandings of source evaluation, trustworthiness, and authorship. Based on the findings, recommendations are made for academic librarians interested in promoting learners’ senses of agency and authority.
Copycat Crime, Jamie Licausi
Copycat Crime, Jamie Licausi
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
This Honors thesis explores the links between media and copycat crime, and what media factors influence the triggering of copycat crime. Many scientists propose different psychological mechanisms that cause people to copy crimes portrayed in media. Copycat crime occurs on a global scale, and different countries have implemented various government policies to prevent the growth of media generated copycat crime. By examining the policies enforced by different countries, this paper proposes a solution to this growing social problem. Overall, the purpose is to identify why copycat crimes occur, and how they can be prevented for the future. Several case studies …
