Local Measures: The Need For Neighborhood-Level Data In Youth Violence Prevention Initiatives, Jeffrey A. Butts, Alana M. Henniger
Publications and Research
In an attempt to assist local jurisdictions with violence prevention, the U.S. Department of Justice and other federal agencies launched the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention in 2010. More than a dozen cities participated in the National Forum, collaborating to increase the effectiveness of their local strategies for reducing youth violence. The Department of Justice asked John Jay College of Criminal Justice to monitor and assess the outcomes of the National Forum beginning in 2011. The study investigated the accomplishments and perceptions of the leadership networks in each city.

Publications and Research
A comprehensive textbook of the early Arabic Kufic script, written as a complete reference book for calligraphers, designers, and students of art history and the history of Arabic language and scripts. This beautiful and powerful script was derived from the earlier Hijazi Mashq style of Mecca and Medina, which was invented by early Muslim scribes to record the Quran. Today, the many historical manuscripts displayed in numerous museums around the world can attest to development and evolution of this remarkable and versatile script. Authored by master calligrapher, Mousavi Jazayeri, this book is the first book written in English that is …

Conservative Mythology And The Supreme Court, Gregg Ivers
Conservative Mythology And The Supreme Court, Gregg Ivers
Emory Business Law Review
Trump has made a firm public commitment to overturn Roe and appoint 'pro-life' justices, and he held out Antonin Scalia as his model Supreme Court justice. For almost fifty years, Republican presidential candidates have campaigned against the Supreme Court. Should President Trump have the opportunity to appoint two justices over the coming years, Chief Justice John Roberts will, more likely than not, find himself having to make decisions that are as strategically calculated towards maintaining the Court's institutional prestige. Retracting rights is not something the Court does easily, if at all. For better or worse, the Constitution's fate has been …

Cognitive Sociology, Michael W. Raphael
Cognitive Sociology, Michael W. Raphael
Publications and Research
Cognitive sociology is the study of the conditions under which meaning is constituted through processes of reification. Cognitive sociology traces its origins to writings in the sociology of knowledge, sociology of culture, cognitive and cultural anthropology, and more recently, work done in cultural sociology and cognitive science. Its central questions revolve around locating these processes of reification since the locus of cognition is highly contentious. Researchers consider how individuality is related to notions of society (structures, institutions, systems, etc.) and notions of culture (cultural forms, cultural structures, sub-cultures, etc.). These questions further explore how these answers depend on learning processes …
The Uncatchable Crook: Pursuing Effective State Crime Control, Daniel J. Patten
The Uncatchable Crook: Pursuing Effective State Crime Control, Daniel J. Patten
The Hilltop Review
This article investigates an interesting conundrum of addressing crime when the state commits a crime itself, and most often is the primary apparatus of crime control. Even more difficult in pursuing state crime control, the state typically plays a major role in defining crime. Criminologists commonly suggest state sanctions to address crime, and states to sanctions other states for their crimes. However, such an approach struggles when faced with the punishment of a powerful state’s criminal actions such as the United States. After laying out the controversy at the heart of controlling state crimes, several criminological theories traditionally employed to …

The Role Of Colonialism And Neo-Colonialism In Shaping Anti-Terrorism Law In Comparative And International Perspectives: Case Studies Of Egypt And Tunisia, Fatemah Alzubairi
The Role Of Colonialism And Neo-Colonialism In Shaping Anti-Terrorism Law In Comparative And International Perspectives: Case Studies Of Egypt And Tunisia, Fatemah Alzubairi
PhD Dissertations
Contemporary anti-terrorism legislation has raised concerns about the global evolution of law and crime control. National and global anti-terrorism frameworks include broad definitions of terrorist crimes and exceptional measures, which risk violating the rule of law and criminal justice. While these frameworks have been broadened since 9/11, the experience of the Arab world shows that wide sweeping anti-terrorism frameworks existed well before this time. This dissertation investigates the origin of current anti-terrorism laws and measures, arguing that colonialism and neo-colonialism contributed to the shaping of counter-terrorism law and policy in two case studies: Egypt and Tunisia. The investigation considers the …

The Relationship Between Prisoners’ Academic Self-Efficacy And Participation In Education, Previous Convictions, Sentence Length, And Portion Of Sentence Served, Beate Buanes Roth, Arve Asbjornsen, Terje Manger
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
Prison education is an important aspect of adult education. The study investigated current participation in prison education, as well as previous convictions, sentence length, and the portion of sentence served as predictors of academic self-efficacy. Survey data derived from prisoners in all Norwegian prisons provided the empirical evidences for the analyses. A principal component analysis of a 40-item academic self-efficacy questionnaire revealed self-efficacy components in literacy, mathematics, ICT, and self-regulated learning. Educational participation had a positive influence on self-efficacy in both mathematics and self-regulated learning. Participants who reported no previous conviction scored higher than others did on self-efficacy in mathematics, …

Removing Corporate Money From Politics, Kyle Landrigan
Removing Corporate Money From Politics, Kyle Landrigan
Emory Business Law Review
Around one hundred years ago President Theodore Roosevelt took the first step to ban corporations from making contributions in relation to federal elections. Over the next century, Congress would pass many laws in furtherance of this goal. As the Congress would pass these laws, the Court would be pressed to review the constitutionality of these bans. What developed was a constant back-and-forth between these two branches, one passing laws and the other striking down. If the fear of corporate involvement leading to corruption in the government is well-grounded, because the Court struck down the ban on corporate expenditures the ball …
Evaluation Of Shared Medical Appointments For Opioid Relapse Prevention In Patients Receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment In A Rural Health Clinic, Ashley M. Koch
Dissertations
The United States is facing an opioid epidemic. Access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is recognized as one crucial strategy in decreasing opioid abuse rates and improving population health through mitigation of infectious disease and overdose deaths. However, it has been reported that individuals suffering from opioid-use disorders have limited access to MAT. A synthesis of evidence supported project implementation of shared medical appointments (SMAs) for opioid relapse prevention as a means to support implementation of MAT, increase patient access to treatment, and promote social support in opioid abuse recovery. Accordingly, this project aimed to develop, implement, and evaluate a SMA …

Life Plan Development In Young Adult Women: An Exploration Using Grounded Theory, Christina Zambrano-Varghese
Life Plan Development In Young Adult Women: An Exploration Using Grounded Theory, Christina Zambrano-Varghese
The Qualitative Report
Although research exists that explores career planning, romantic relationships, and decision making in women, it is not yet known how women understand and develop the goals that they hope to achieve throughout their lives. The current study aims to answer how women understand and go through the process of developing the life plans that they hope to pursue after college graduation. This research question was answered with Charmaz’s (2006) model of grounded theory by conducting 13 interviews with young adult women approaching college graduation, followed by one focus group which was used to validate emergent themes. It was found that …

Creepers, Druggers, And Predator Ambiguity: The Interactional Construction Of Campus Victimization And The University Sex Predator, Leah C. Butler, Holly Ningard, Brandie Pugh, Thomas Vander Ven
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
In response to the pervasive problem of sexual victimization on campus, many colleges in the United States have adopted bystander intervention programs which seek to educate students and provide them with the tools necessary to intervene in potentially risky situations. Research shows that how potential bystanders construct potential victims and perpetrators of campus victimization significantly impacts their progression to intervention. As an extension of Pugh, Ningard, Vander Ven and Butler’s (Deviant Behavior, 2016) work on victim ambiguity, the present study drew from intensive interviews of 30 undergraduates from a large university in the American Midwest to examine …

The Cuny-Shanghai Library Faculty Exchange Program: Participants Remember, Reflect, And Reshape, Sheau-Yueh J. Chao, Beth Evans, Ryan Phillips, Mark Aaron Polger, Beth Posner, Ellen Sexton
Publications and Research
This chapter recounts the outcomes and experiences of six American librarians who participated in an international librarian exchange program that ran from spring 2010 through fall 2011. The exchange brought together the City University of New York (CUNY) and two universities in Shanghai, China: Shanghai University (SU) and Shanghai Normal University (SNU). The program was inspired, in part, by recognition of the diversity of CUNY’s student body and growing awareness of the increasing globalization of information and education. For the Chinese librarians, the exchange offered an opportunity to learn from the West and showcase their own innovations. The traveling participants …
Space, Land, Territory, And The Study Of The Bible, Stephen C. Russell
Space, Land, Territory, And The Study Of The Bible, Stephen C. Russell
Publications and Research
In this brief volume, written for professional biblical scholars and graduate students being trained in biblical studies, Stephen C. Russell introduces the reader to the interdisciplinary study of space and its related concepts, including land, territory, border, frontier, nature, scale, spatial flows, and rhythm. He offers a synopsis of eight approaches to the study of space that have been influential in the humanities and social sciences in recent decades—sacred, legal, political, economic, ecological, visual, social, and urban approaches. He pays special attention to Henri Lefebvre’s treatment of social space as a social product. The volume also briefly notes some of …
