A Policy-Oriented Framework For Understanding Violent Extremism, Wael Haddara
A Policy-Oriented Framework For Understanding Violent Extremism, Wael Haddara
New England Journal of Public Policy
Violent extremism represents a serious challenge to open and democratic societies. This article presents a framework for understanding violent extremism in the context of “lone-wolf” attacks in Western societies. The framework combines social, political, and psychological factors and highlights the importance of integrating the available evidence from multiple disciplines to develop cogent, effective policy. Specifically, in addition to a broad survey of motivational factors, the article draws on terror management theory to provide insight into the interaction between religiosity and violence.
Counterextremism programs are most successful at mitigating the risk of violence when they are focused on behavior, rather than …
Inclusiveness, Foresight, And Decisiveness: The Practical Wisdom Of Barrier-Crossing Leaders, Michael A. Cowan
Inclusiveness, Foresight, And Decisiveness: The Practical Wisdom Of Barrier-Crossing Leaders, Michael A. Cowan
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article previews a study under way to compare and contrast the attitudes, thinking, and action of leaders around the world who manage to bridge social divisions in their respective locales with those who work within their own groups. After briefly describing the planned assessment of their forms of social cohesion and empathy, the article examines the practical wisdom of effective actors in the social world and how it contrasts with academic knowledge for insight into how wise practitioners think about what they are doing. It also looks at the history of the conception of practical wisdom. Finally, examples of …

Case Study Of “Hot-Spot” Apartment Complexes In North Central Indianapolis, Sarah R. Simpson
Case Study Of “Hot-Spot” Apartment Complexes In North Central Indianapolis, Sarah R. Simpson
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
This case study focused on a defined apartment complex hot spot, which includes apartment complexes receiving Section 8 funding, in the north-central region of Indianapolis, Indiana. The study identified social, environmental, and management characteristics possibly associated with concentrated levels of crime at Section 8 apartment complexes. As previous studies have shown, crime is concentrated at a few apartment complexes with a number of common characteristics such as a large minority population and a large amount of litter at the complex. In addition, a perspective of the effectiveness of hot-spot policing was obtained from beat officers who are familiar with the …
Instrumental Goal Pursuit As An Individual-Difference Dimension In The Seeking Of Happiness, Bernardo J. Carducci, Benjamin D. Traughber
Instrumental Goal Pursuit As An Individual-Difference Dimension In The Seeking Of Happiness, Bernardo J. Carducci, Benjamin D. Traughber
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
The purpose of the present study was an attempt, by examining in more detail the use of the specific strategy of instrumental goal pursuit with the development of the Instrumental Goal Pursuit Scale (IGPS), to extend previous research on the self-selected strategies individuals employ in an attempt to seek happiness. The IGPS consists of five items characterized by happiness-enhancement strategies designed to meet personal goals (e.g., “Attempt to reach my full potential”). Although no gender difference was found, scores on the IGPS correlated significantly (p < .001) with measures of life satisfaction and positive affect. Compared to those with low scores, those in the High-IGPS group maintained personal beliefs reflective of being more satisfied with their current state of happiness, feeling more optimistic about the future, and expressing greater control over their happiness, as well as a greater (p < .001) frequency of use of the more constructive happiness-enhancement strategy categories of Purposeful Leisure, Social Affiliation, Mental Control, and Religious/Reflective. The overall pattern of results suggests initial support for the construct validity of the IGPS. Future research based on instrumental theories linking personality to subjective well-being should focus on individual differences in the underlying dynamics (e.g., goal construction/implementation) and practical implications (e.g., happiness interventions; goal-pursuit training) to examine more thoroughly the validity and utility of the IGPS.

The Influence Of New Governance Policy On Correctional Management And Policy: The Indiana Example, Joseph Ferrandino
The Influence Of New Governance Policy On Correctional Management And Policy: The Indiana Example, Joseph Ferrandino
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
Correctional management and policy decisions throughout the nation have been greatly influenced by the new governance of public administration philosophy, and Indiana provides a practical example of this rapid expansion that has gone largely unnoticed in the criminal justice literature. Using state budget data and contractual artifacts from the Indiana Department of Corrections and Department of Administration, this research details the levels of privatization through contracting and private management in the Indiana system. This analysis suggests specific attention of correctional policy makers to the size of private markets, accountability networks, market expansion of private providers, and equity issues that arise …
The New Frontier: Genetic Analysis And The Concept Of Rights Infringement, Tyler Counsil
The New Frontier: Genetic Analysis And The Concept Of Rights Infringement, Tyler Counsil
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
Major highlights of genetic analysis and its implications in the field of forensic science are discussed at length, including the discovery of polymerase chain reaction and the importance of one’s genetic material as criminal evidence. A discussion of recent trends in molecular techniques will give way to a necessary dialogue regarding the potential pitfalls pertaining to overinvestment in genetic profiling. Major topics of debate include the use of arrestee databases, constitutional rights infringements through molecular analysis, and unwarranted evidence collection.

Hobbes In Hollywood: Crime And Its Outcomes In The Natural State, Joseph Ferrandino
Hobbes In Hollywood: Crime And Its Outcomes In The Natural State, Joseph Ferrandino
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
This content analysis introduces a genre of film that paralleled the rise of conservatism in the United States (1979–1996). Based on the words of Hobbes, the films are perceived to represent the world in its natural state, absent the proper social and law enforcement authorities within existing civilized society. Prior literature on this topic and subject are examined, as are the real measures of criminal justice system breadth over this period, including crime, victimization, arrests, imprisonments, police staffing data, and information on dollars spent. The results of the content analysis reveal the cold, harsh, brutal, nasty, and short world of …
