Career Pathways Program Annual Report For Ay 2016/17, Wie Yusuf, Chris Osgood
Career Pathways
It is the mission of the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Program at Old Dominion University (ODU) to introduce graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to the diverse roles, the responsibilities, and the rewards of an academic career. In doing so, it focuses particularly on the teaching and service roles sometimes not included in doctoral training. Fundamental research skills, such as grant writing, publishing, and academic job searching, are also addressed.
The PFF program offers a ‘Preparing Future Faculty Certificate’ to graduate students who document completion of specific activities related to preparing for an academic career. Any ODU and NSU degree-seeking graduate …

You’ve Gotta Read This: Summer Reading at Musselman Library
Each year, Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list. Our goal is to inspire students and the rest of our community to take time in the summer to sit back, relax, and read.
With the 2017 collection, we again bring together recommendations from across our campus—the books, movies, TV shows, and podcasts that have meant something special to us over the past year. 118 faculty, administrators and staff offer up 218 recommendations.
We include five special features this year. Two of our regular columnists return once again: James Udden and …

The More? Uniform Code Of Military Justice (And A Practical Way To Make It Better), Sean Patrick Flynn
Notre Dame Law Review
This Note offers suggestions for the successful transition of the military sentencing system, in light of the responses to the federal sentencing system. It goes on to argue that ,because sentencing guidelines are detrimental to the defendant, the military sentencing process should offer a guaranteed, but waivable, two days of preparation to the defendant post-conviction and presentencing.

Breaking The Cycle: An Exploratory Study Of Alternative Solutions For Mentally Ill Adults In The Criminal Justice System, Lindsey Whitley
Breaking The Cycle: An Exploratory Study Of Alternative Solutions For Mentally Ill Adults In The Criminal Justice System, Lindsey Whitley
Masters Theses
Mental illness is a prevalent issue and many times individuals diagnosed with a mental illness are repeat offenders within the criminal justice system; therefore, it is important to understand the problems at hand and find ways to handle the problems, or best yet take preventative measures to stop the problems from ever occurring. The literature review and interviews show that the criminal justice system seems to be handling mental illness in the best way possible with the current resources that are available to them. However, the literature review and interviews also show that an increase in resources and training on …

The Fort Mcmurray Wildfire 2016: Risk Perceptions And Behaviours Among Evacuees, Christopher James Kearns
Dissertations
The devastating wildfires in the Fort McMurray, Alberta, region in May of 2016 forced the evacuation of almost 90,000 people from their homes. This study examines and compares risk perceptions and evacuation behaviours between young adults, 18 to 24 years of age and older adults, 25 years and older, and between genders. The study participants (n = 299) were students and staff at Keyano College in Fort McMurray. They indicated only slight differences in their perceptions of risk and their evacuation behaviours between both the age groups and by gender. Environmental cues were significant indicators of risk for all participants. …

A Randomized Trial Of Brief Assessment Interventions For Young Adults Who Use Drugs In The Club Scene, Steven P. Kurtz, Mance E. Buttram, Maria E. Pagano, Hilary L. Surratt
Center for Health Services Research Faculty Publications
Background—Efficacious interventions to reduce drug use and its consequences for club drug using populations are not apparent in the literature. We tested interviewer-(CAPI) and self-administered (ACASI) comprehensive health and social risk assessments as distinct interventions compared to waitlist control.
Methods—750 men and women ages 18-39 with multidrug use and heterosexual behavior were randomized in equal proportions to the three conditions. Instrumentation included well-tested measures of drug use, risky sex, mental distress and substance dependence.
Results—The sample was 56% male; mean age=25. Reported risk behaviors and health consequences did not differ by assessment modality. Adjusted HLM analyses showed …

In this Perspective, HEAL Trafficking, the nation's leading public health anti-trafficking organization maps out a national research agenda to tackle the problem of human trafficking. Given the paucity of research on trafficking, HEAL Trafficking engaged its membership in a consensus development process throughout 2016 to develop its national research agenda. HEAL Trafficking proposes five priorities that public health researchers should focus on in the decade ahead to make meaningful progress on preventing and responding to human trafficking in the Unites States.

Developmental Trajectory Of Familiar And Unfamiliar Face Recognition In Children: Evidence In Support Of Experience, Molly Humphreys
Developmental Trajectory Of Familiar And Unfamiliar Face Recognition In Children: Evidence In Support Of Experience, Molly Humphreys
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The ability to recognise faces and where the ability stems from is a much debated topic in psychology. This study sought to replicate Jenkins, White, Van Montfort and Burton’s (2011) simple paradigm to investigate the developmental trajectory of face processing. This study was conducted with 234 participants, formed of three age groups; 4-5 year olds (N=78), 8-9 year olds (N=78) and 18-21 year olds (N=78). All participants were provided with two separate piles containing 60 photographs each and were asked to sort them into piles according to their identity. One pile contained photographs of two well known popstars’ faces (familiar) …

Conflicting Definitions Of Sexual Assault And Consent: The Ramifications Of Title Ix Male Gender Discrimination Claims Against College Campuses, Tyra Singleton
Conflicting Definitions Of Sexual Assault And Consent: The Ramifications Of Title Ix Male Gender Discrimination Claims Against College Campuses, Tyra Singleton
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
Sexual assault is pervasive on college campuses across the country. Title IX mandates that school’s receiving federal funding protect student victims of sexual assault. Some campuses have gone further than the Title IX requirements and have created internal policies that are stacked against the accused and potentially reach the level of violating the accused’s constitutional rights. This note examines how Title IX has influenced academia and how unjust campus tribunals have caused accused male students to seek redress in federal courts for gender discrimination. This note will also examine the racial implications of Title IX and consider how race contributes …

Robert and Yvonne Koob Fund for Student Community Engagement Recipients
During my internship, I accomplished many goals that I had. The first goal was to better understand the life of a criminal prosecutor. I sat in on many trials and was able to learn the process of convicting a criminal. By the end of the internship, I was able to understand much more legal terminology than when I started. I also accomplished a few projects in the office that made the prosecutors’ jobs a bit easier. One of those projects was to aid in transferring paper case files to electronic files. The second project was to look up dispositions of …

Learning The Ropes: General Experience, Task-Specific Experience, And The Output Of Police Officers, Gregory Deangelo, Emily Owens
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
We estimate the role that law enforcement officer experience has on the probability of punishment, using a unique data set of tickets issued by the Idaho State Police linked to human resource records. All else equal, officers issue fewer tickets earlier in their career than later in their career. Quasi-exogenous shocks to an officer’s task-specific experience, generated by law changes, cause a temporary reduction in the frequency with which a subset of troopers “use” those laws, creating disparities in the likelihood that individual citizens are cited for law violations. The reduction in ticketing in response to a law change is …

Raising The Library's Impact Factor : A Case Study In Scholarly Publishing Literacy For Graduate Students., Samantha Mcclellan, Robert Detmering, George Martinez, Anna Marie Johnson
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Graduate students across disciplines feel pressure to publish their scholarship, but they are often unsure how to go about it, partly due to a lack of explicit training in this area. This article discusses the collaborative development of a semester-long Publishing Academy, designed to promote knowledge of scholarly publishing and increase the library’s impact within the graduate student community. Demonstrating how librarians can draw on their unique skills to build a niche service addressing unmet needs on campus, the project also puts into practice a broader conception of scholarly publishing literacy, which can be linked to the Association of College …
