Points Of View: Herbert Bayer's Exhibition Catalogue For The 1930 Section Allemande, Wallis Miller Jan 2017

Points Of View: Herbert Bayer's Exhibition Catalogue For The 1930 Section Allemande, Wallis Miller

Architecture Faculty Publications

Sigfried Giedion called Herbert Bayer’s exhibition catalogue for the 1930 Section Allemande a “minor typographical masterpiece.” Like similar catalogues, it is inexpensive, provides an inventory list, has an introduction, functions as a guide, and is illustrated. However, the majority of its images are of installations, not their contents. Bayer accommodates the catalogue type for applied arts exhibitions by listing installations as objects, but he confronts the type by showing installations as display contexts that establish points of view, emulating, idealizing and interpreting the experience of the exhibition. By independently constructing ways of seeing and understanding the exhibition, the catalogue resists …

A Prospective Trial: Traditional Versus Video-Based Teaching For Gynecologic Surgery, Mireille Truong

Health Sciences Education Symposium

This prospective study compared the effect of traditional versus video-based education in gynecologic surgery on cognitive and surgical skills performance among millennial medical trainees and evaluated the impact of individual learning preference on performance. Residents and medical students in their OBGYN rotation at an urban university-hospital were recruited and assigned to either traditional training (TT) or video-based training (VBT) for teaching of skills needed for total laparoscopic hysterectomy. Pre- and post-intervention knowledge and skills assessments were performed. Subjects’ learning preference was evaluated with the validated VARK© questionnaire. VBT and TT change in knowledge and skills assessment scores was compared, and …

Clarifying The Need For Inpatient Medication Education, Pamela Cox Raffaldt Jan 2017

Clarifying The Need For Inpatient Medication Education, Pamela Cox Raffaldt

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Low health literacy is a problem for millions of Americans resulting in increased use of avoidable healthcare resources and poor health outcomes. Use of pharmaceutical regimens to manage acute and chronic health issues is the most common treatment modality. Unfortunately, people with low health literacy may have trouble understanding and following provider instructions; reading and following directions on medication bottles, either prescribed and/or over the counter; and identifying proper reasons for taking a medication. The purpose of this study was to increase patient self-agency for the treatment and management of acute and chronic health conditions through medication education. Providing medication …

How Instagram Content Affects Brand Attitudes And Behavior, Ming (Bryan) Wang, Valerie K. Jones Jan 2017

How Instagram Content Affects Brand Attitudes And Behavior, Ming (Bryan) Wang, Valerie K. Jones

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

This paper examines the effectiveness of communication on Instagram, a type of visual social networking site, by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Results show that the TSA’s Instagram account elicited stronger emotional reactions than a private consumer product business Instagram account. More importantly, perceived usefulness of content, perceived persuasive intent of content, and negative emotions all affected attitudes toward the TSA. Additionally, perceived usefulness of content and negative emotions also influenced communicative action regarding the TSA account. Findings demonstrate the emotional impact of visual communication and the role of both cognitive and affective evaluations in changing attitudes and behavior …

Feline And Canine Figures In The Art Of Teotihuacan, Mexico : A Review And Reassessment Of Major Interpretations Of Predatory Animal Imagery In The City Of The Gods, Charles R. Stapleton Jan 2017

Feline And Canine Figures In The Art Of Teotihuacan, Mexico : A Review And Reassessment Of Major Interpretations Of Predatory Animal Imagery In The City Of The Gods, Charles R. Stapleton

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The feline and canine figures of Teotihuacan's mural paintings communicate a surprisingly wide range of concepts and feature a rich array of associations. This variation was generated in part by the complex socio-political, economic and religious systems of this monumental, cosmopolitan city that permeated its central Mexican highland core and formed long-distance ties across Classic period Mesoamerica during its tenure (1-550/650 CE). Teotihuacan feline and canine imagery is best known for its military and sacrificial associations, a group of interpretations often supported by direct historical analogy to the Late-Postclassic Mexica-Aztec Jaguar and Eagle warrior sodalities. Although this line of reasoning …

Activity Patterns And Habitat Use Of Ansonia Hanitschi On Gunung Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, Nancy E. Karraker, David Bickford, Samantha Fischer, Anne Devan-Song, Alicia Tan, Jennifer Sheridan, Paul Yambun, Maklarin Lakim

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Ansonia hanitschi is a small, stream-breeding toad endemic to Borneo. Little is known about its ecology or behavior. We documented diurnal activity patterns and habitat use, nocturnal habitat use, and body sizes of A. hanitschi near streams and in forests on Gunung Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. We identified 12 unique diurnal behaviors in this species. Ansonia hanitschi are sit-and-wait predators that spend > 75% of their time during the day, on average, sitting inactive in shady areas within 1.2 m of the stream. Observed toads spent 6% of their time jumping, 4% of their time crawling, and …

Audiovisual Commentary As A Way To Reduce Transactional Distance And Increase Teaching Presence In Online Writing Instruction: Student Perceptions And Preferences, Anna Grigoryan Jan 2017

Audiovisual Commentary As A Way To Reduce Transactional Distance And Increase Teaching Presence In Online Writing Instruction: Student Perceptions And Preferences, Anna Grigoryan

Journal of Response to Writing

The rapid increase in online learning programs has led to an increase in the number of students taking composition courses online. As a result, there is a need to develop teaching practices and approaches to feedback designed specifically for online learning environments, which serve a largely nontraditional student population. Addressing a current gap in the literature regarding approaches to feedback that meet the needs of nontraditional students, this quasi-experimental study used a process model of composition and post-positivist and social constructivist epistemological orientations to measure student perceptions and preferences when provided with text-only feedback or a combination of textual and …

Using Mediawiki, The Semantic Mediawiki Extension And Relfinder For Heritage Data Management: A Rock Art Case Study, Robert A. Haubt

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

This paper looks at the usefulness of the MediaWiki and relevant wiki extensions for rock art data management and research. The paper follows a framework provided by the Global Rock Art Database www.rockartdatabase.com and examines a new database model for a semantic data management approach. Through practical examples it explores the usefulness of wikis in the data management life cycle from data planning to collection, storage and dissemination and examines interconnections within each phase of the cycle. The paper proposes a combined use of the Semantic MediaWiki extension and the RelFinder for visualization of semantic relationships, which could assist researchers …
