Second-Graders Beautify For Butterflies, Andrea Anderson
Second-Graders Beautify For Butterflies, Andrea Anderson
Annual Graduate Student Symposium
This project presents activities that support previous research suggesting the integration of art with science is beneficial to the learning and cooperative processes of children. The primary participants in this project were 23 second-grade students. The second-graders participated in a community engagement activity during which they brainstormed, collaboratively problem solved, and implemented a new plan to beautify an outdoor space at their school. The Think-Pair-Share (TPS) learning strategy was implemented to encourage peer teaching in the classroom. Students’ participation in activities was organized based upon the 5 E’s learning phases; engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate.
The results of this …

Colstrip Coal: Developing A Website To Communicate A Highly Complex And Controversial Subject, Carolyn Chaffee
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
The purpose of this meta-document is to explain my project design, review its development and outcomes, and provide my reflections on the project. The project objective was to create a website that communicates vital information about the coal industry, Colstrip’s coal-fired power plants, the potential closure of several of the plants, and the potential impacts closure would have on the community and the state. The project also discusses options to continue to use coal as an energy source and lower its impacts on the environment. The information on the website is thorough and presented in an interesting and effective method; …
'Why Don’T You Just Go Back Where You Came From?' Or 'Slight Yams': 'Pangs' Of Regret And Unresolved Ambivalence In Joss Whedon’S California, Tereza M. Szeghi, Wesley Dempster
'Why Don’T You Just Go Back Where You Came From?' Or 'Slight Yams': 'Pangs' Of Regret And Unresolved Ambivalence In Joss Whedon’S California, Tereza M. Szeghi, Wesley Dempster

Joss Whedon’s two longest-running television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (BtVS) (1997-2003) and Angel (1999-2004), which together constitute the “Buffyverse,” often focus on questions about the degree to which past actions bear on one’s present moral character. Particularly in the case of reformed demons and vampires, regret for past sins weighs heavily on the present and motivates current benevolent and heroic deeds.
For the ensouled vampire Angel most especially, the need to make amends for centuries of sadistic cruelty and bloodshed stamps him with his ever brooding-personality and his nearly ceaseless attempts to balance the scales—while knowing that the scales …

An Investigation Into The Teaching Of International Public Relations To Undergraduates, Matthew Wisla
An Investigation Into The Teaching Of International Public Relations To Undergraduates, Matthew Wisla
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Currently, most U.S. multinational companies increasingly rely on international markets for revenue and growth. Public relations professionals, whether they are on assignment in a foreign land or based in the U.S. as part of an international team, must possess the skills to communicate effectively with target audiences from other cultures. The purpose of this study is to better understand the international qualifications and background of instructors teaching international public relations to U.S. undergraduates. This study is based on data collected through telephone interviews with select academic thought leaders in the field of teaching international public relations, and a broad email …
Using Online Grammar Lessons For Student Fluency In American Sign Language, Darby Campbell
Using Online Grammar Lessons For Student Fluency In American Sign Language, Darby Campbell
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
American Sign Language (ASL) is offered as a foreign language at many universities across the United States. Most research on ASL acquisition focuses on Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) children and first language (L1) acquisition. In this quantitative experimental study, a sample of undergraduate hearing students in intermediate ASL classes were given ASL grammar lessons that accompanied traditional language lessons. It was hypothesized that ASL students exposed to explicit written grammar lessons would show an increase in fluency. Participants were given a pre-test and post-test consisting of 20 English sentences and were asked to translate them into written ASL …

Mobile App Of Food Combinations- Medley For Mom, Xun Zhao
Mobile App Of Food Combinations- Medley For Mom, Xun Zhao
Theses
“There were variations in the types of dietary intervention and the effect of specific nutrient components. There was no heterogeneity for dietary intervention components, but considerate heterogeneity for all dietary interventions combined.” With the development of the society and the improvement of living conditions, people’s eating habit has become much more diverse. However, some food combinations could potentially bring discomfort, such as indigestion, constipation and so on.
Due to the individual differences of the human digestive system structures, improper food combinations lead to various harms to different groups of people, among which pregnant women suffer the most.

The Relationship Between The Military's Masculine Culture And Service Members' Help-Seeking Behaviors, Rachel Reit
The Relationship Between The Military's Masculine Culture And Service Members' Help-Seeking Behaviors, Rachel Reit
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, over 2.5 million active duty U.S. military service members have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan (Knobloch & Wilson, 2015). Of those who return as veterans, twenty percent experience serious mental health problems, and only 30-40% of them seek help or treatment (Tanielian & Jaycox, 2008; Wilson, Gettings, Hall, & Pastor, 2015). Recently, the military has increased efforts to encourage help-seeking behaviors among service members and to normalize mental health treatment. However, the military’s masculine culture and emphasis on strength and toughness inhibits the success of these efforts. The present studies investigate the …

From Character To Characteristics, Yen-Ting Chen
From Character To Characteristics, Yen-Ting Chen
Theses
Through my life experiences, the way my family raised me, and fostered my thoughts, I have developed a strong connection to my native language. Taiwan is a country where the traditional Chinese characters are still widely in use, alongside with Hong Kong, Macao and Singapore. In fact, traditional Chinese characters can carry specific meaning individually, or further create various meanings when used in combination, which is profound and intriguing. Focusing on the form and structure of Chinese characters and their relationship with literal meaning, I wanted to design and create furniture that brings together culture, family, and personal vision.

A Passionate Journey: Info-Motion Graphics Video Exploring Why And How To Find Work You Love., Jia Zhou
Theses
Benjamin Disraeli, a 19th century British Prime Minister, once said, “Man is not a rational animal. He is only truly good or great when he acts from passion.” Passion is the fuel that can power you toward the realization of your dreams. To live a truly satisfying and purposeful life, it is important for every individual to know what their passions are so life will be fulfilling.

Websites As Facilities Under Ada Title Iii, Ryan C. Brunner
Websites As Facilities Under Ada Title Iii, Ryan C. Brunner
Duke Law & Technology Review
Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act requires public accommodations—private entities that offer goods or services to the public—to be accessible to individuals with disabilities. There is an ongoing debate about whether Title III applies to websites that offer services to the public, but this debate may be resolved in the coming years by litigation or Department of Justice regulations. Assuming for the sake of argument that Title III will eventually be applied to websites, the next inquiry is what that application should look like. The regulatory definition of “facilities” should be amended to include nonphysical places of public …
Human Head Orientation And Eye Visibility As Indicators Of Attention For Goats (Capra Hircus), Christian Nawroth, Alan G. Mcelligott
Human Head Orientation And Eye Visibility As Indicators Of Attention For Goats (Capra Hircus), Christian Nawroth, Alan G. Mcelligott
Social Cognition Collection
Animals domesticated for working closely with humans (e.g. dogs) have been shown to be remarkable in adjusting their behaviour to human attentional stance. However, there is little evidence for this form of information perception in species domesticated for production rather than companionship. We tested domestic ungulates (goats) for their ability to differentiate attentional states of humans. In the first experiment, we investigated the effect of body and head orientation of one human experimenter on approach behaviour by goats. Test subjects (N = 24) significantly changed their behaviour when the experimenter turned its back to the subjects, but did not take …
