Building Planner Commitment: Are California’S Sb 375 And Oregon’S Sb 1059 Models For Climate-Change Mitigation?, Keith Bartholomew, David Proffitt

TREC Final Reports

California’s Sustainable Communities and Climate Protection Act (SB 375) and the Oregon Sustainable Transportation Initiative (SB 1059) have made them the first states in the nation to try and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions using the transportation-planning process. Evaluating how these pioneering laws have changed local planning processes – as well as plans themselves – in each state provides insight into the laws’ effectiveness at changing development patterns in a way that reduces GHG emissions, without waiting decades to see the effects in the built environment. Both states’ laws require metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) and the municipalities that comprise them …

Non-U.S. Citizen, Community College Students: Their Federal Student Aid Status, Gender, Achievement, And Persistence At An Emerging Hsi, Jafeth E. Sanchez, Jeannette Smith

Journal of Student Financial Aid

This study presents a quantitative, exploratory analysis of 535 students attending Truckee Meadows Community College in Northern Nevada who were eligible or ineligible for federal student aid and were non-U.S. citizens. Within a snapshot of the Fall 2015 through Fall 2016 semesters, we examined the variables of gender, grade point average (GPA), credits earned, type of financial aid, amount of financial aid, persistence, and graduation status of these two groups via a collaboration between two institutions. Results revealed no statistically significant differences by gender. Non-U.S. citizens attained similar GPAs regardless of eligibility for aid, but there were differences in credit …

In The Folds: Transforming A City’S Identity Through Art And Social Purposes, Yichien Cooper Oct 2017

In The Folds: Transforming A City’S Identity Through Art And Social Purposes, Yichien Cooper

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This autoethnographic narrative retraces my four-year journey as an art commissioner for a city that is transforming beyond the stigma associated with a significant role in early nuclear weapons to a growing agritourism industry. The looming pressure for change is just like when tectonic plates push against each other until there is a quick release, causing earthquakes and eruptions. In the midst of the changing forces, I consider how the arts fold in. There are two purposes in this article that investigates the complexity between civic development and art. First, I will (re)define and (re)frame (Short & Turner, 2013) the …

Sustainability For Whom? Place-Makers Of Detroit, Dominica, Ecuador, And Mexico, Emma Gaalaas Mullaney Oct 2017

Sustainability For Whom? Place-Makers Of Detroit, Dominica, Ecuador, And Mexico, Emma Gaalaas Mullaney

Sponsored Events -- List

Drawing from more than a decade of work with farmers in rural and urban areas across the Americas, Professor Gaalaas Mullaney highlights some key findings about how small-scale farmers have a big influence on the conservation of cultural and ecological richness in their region. In each of these diverse places, innovative farmers work at the margins of dominant political and economic institutions with only occasional recognition of the value that they produce. What can these farmers teach us about how to cultivate place-based sustainability? How is sustainability related to social and economic justice?

African Indigenous Knowledge: An Underutilised And Neglected Resource For Development, Njabulo Bruce Khumalo, Charity Baloyi Oct 2017

African Indigenous Knowledge: An Underutilised And Neglected Resource For Development, Njabulo Bruce Khumalo, Charity Baloyi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Indigenous knowledge points to the fact that Africa has been able to generate, test and apply knowledge through its own methodologies and approaches. This knowledge sustained communities for years prior to colonialism which somehow downplayed the value of indigenous knowledge and promoted western knowledge systems. Colonialism created dependence on western knowledge systems and Africa has over the years neglected its own rich indigenous knowledge. This paper sought tohighlight challenges faced in the quest to incorporate IK into developmental goals and projects. Furthermore, the study also sought to recommend ways through which Africans can promote IK in its developmental projects. A …

The Law Of The Sea Convention And Sea Level Rise After The South China Sea Arbitration, Stuart Kaye Oct 2017

The Law Of The Sea Convention And Sea Level Rise After The South China Sea Arbitration, Stuart Kaye

International Law Studies

Sea level rise from anthropogenic climate change is an increasing concern for the international community and especially for coastal States. The prospect of whole islands disappearing under rising waters raises serious questions as to the impact upon maritime jurisdiction and the ability of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to deal with the inundation of large areas of territory. The South China Sea Arbitration Tribunal recently considered these questions. Here, the Tribunal relied on a high standard for what constituted human habitability under Article 121 of the Law of the Sea Convention, which likely will have …

Haitian Sun And Peruvian Ruins: Service-Learning In International Development, Paige Rudin

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

Development issues in growing nations can be seen and discussed in service-learning programs on Purdue’s campus. Two international experiences in Haiti and Peru reveal a need for development strategies that can be universally applied in service-learning settings. Traveling with graduate students from Lima, Peru, to study animal connection in Peruvian society and teaching Haitian university students the basics of water quality and testing allow the exchange of ideas between cultures and profound learning for both parties. Connections like these change mindsets and inspire curiosity, thus strengthening human capacity. Challenges and barriers like integrating quantitative and qualitative data from community partners …

Water Supply In Developing Countries: Student Experiences In The Dominican Republic, Albert Alwang, Margaret Busse, Audrey Caprio, Marieke Fenton, Jason Hawes, Andrew Kanach, Autumn Mcelfresh-Sutton

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

In 2010, the United Nations established access to safe drinking water as a basic human right; however, many areas around the globe still lack access. The interdisciplinary service-learning course “Water Supply in Developing Countries” was established at Purdue in 2012 to address the complex issue of water insecurity around the world. Over the past five years, the course has produced teams involving students from nursing, engineering, agricultural economics, biology, and food science working together to develop sustainable, community-scale drinking water treatment systems. In partnership with Aqua Clara International, the student team in 2017 established a drinking water treatment system at …

Residents ' Perception Of Tourism Impacts And Involvement: A Cluster Analysis Of Kilimanjaro Residents, Tanzania, Dev Jani

Business Management Review

This study aimed at segmenting residents around Mount Kilimanjaro on the basis of their perception of economic, environmental, and socio-cultural impacts of tourism. A structured questionnaire yielded 160 cases that were clustered and analyzed using non-hierarchical analysis followed by hierarchical cluster analysis. Two clusters were noted to differ with respect to their perceived impacts of tourism. Among the demographic variables, only gender served in differentiating the clusters. The two clusters were observed to differ in terms of economic, political, and social involvement of residents with tourism industry. Residents who are involved in tourism industry are likely to be positive on …

A Truly Transformative Hre: Facing Our Current Challenges, Christine Monaghan, Carol Anne Spreen, Anna Hillary Oct 2017

A Truly Transformative Hre: Facing Our Current Challenges, Christine Monaghan, Carol Anne Spreen, Anna Hillary

International Journal of Human Rights Education

In this research project, we examine how human rights education can go be-yond the symbolism and rhetoric of rights and, instead, be understood in a way that critically considers the continued social, economic, and political inequalities that persist. Learning about rights should be informed by the lived experiences of those whose rights have been and continue to be violated. We use five years of research which empirically documents the impact and learning that took place in an interdisciplinary, action-oriented high school class comprised of honors/Advanced Placement (AP), refugee/migrant and special education students. By understanding and investigating identity, belonging, and citizenship …

Raton Walkability Workshop Report, University Of New Mexico Prevention Research Center

Walking Guides and Reports

Ramblin’ Round Raton (RRR) coordinated a walkability workshop for members of the community to come together at the Center for Sustainable Community and assess different parts of the city for pedestrian friendliness. The group modeled the event after a similar workshop in the Village of Cuba in 2009. Prior to the workshop, RRR identified six areas of focus. They chose the locations because they are popular pedestrian thoroughfares, close to schools, or thought to be confusing areas for pedestrians.

How Do Developers Respond To Land Use Regulations? An Analysis Of New Housing In Los Angeles, C. J. Gabbe Oct 2017

How Do Developers Respond To Land Use Regulations? An Analysis Of New Housing In Los Angeles, C. J. Gabbe

Environmental Studies and Sciences

There is strong evidence that land use regulations constrain housing production. We know less about how real estate developers respond to specific zoning provisions. I compare the characteristics of new multifamily housing with baseline land use regulations in two sets of rail station areas in Los Angeles. I supplement this building-scale analysis with expert interviews. I find that developers were most sensitive to density restrictions and parking requirements. The average development in the Vermont/Western area had 112% of the maximum allowable residential density and 94% of the minimum required parking. Koreatown’s average development had 99% of the maximum density and …

Building Vibrant Lives And Communities Through Higher Education, Jeffrey S. Vitter

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

This essay examines the powerful impact that higher education has on changing lives, communities, and the world; how it creates opportunities, inspires new ideas, spurs innovations, and is the great enabler that allows people to create better futures. The essay provides illustrative examples from the University of Mississippi across a broad spectrum of areas. First, the essay examines how higher education offers a range of opportunities from inspiring and challenging the most prepared students to providing an accessible and affordable education to all qualifying students. The essay then describes how a modern university’s vision transcends the intellectual development of students …
