This study seeks to understand the characteristics and motivations of young adults who are involved in sexting. A survey of sexting behaviors was administered online at a large urban university. Identifying the factors and influences for a …

Universal Principles Of Bioethics And Patient Rights In Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Abdulbasit Bukhari Jan 2017

Universal Principles Of Bioethics And Patient Rights In Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Abdulbasit Bukhari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to keep pace with international bioethical practices, and with international bioethical declarations, this dissertation will investigate challenges facing patients’ rights discourse in Saudi Arabia, and the adaptation of universal bioethics standards in the Saudi healthcare system. The role of religion and issues of human rights will be discussed further, given that religion and human rights affect patient’s rights profoundly. Specifically, the divergence between religious dictations and the secular language of human rights principles will provide a distinctive perspective on patients’ rights discourse, especially in a country such as Saudi Arabia where religion is integral to the national foundations, …

Reconstructing The War In Iraq: Post-9/11 American War Fiction In Dialogue With Official-Media Discourse, Ashley Kunsa Jan 2017

Reconstructing The War In Iraq: Post-9/11 American War Fiction In Dialogue With Official-Media Discourse, Ashley Kunsa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project examines American-authored Iraq War fiction within the context of public discourse. Given that modern, industrialized warfare is as much created by and through official-media discourse as represented by it, fictional accounts of Iraq exist not outside or separate from this discourse but rather in a dynamic, continually evolving relationship with it. The three texts explored in this study—Ben Fountain’s Billy Lynn’s Long Half Time Walk (2012), David Abrams’ Fobbit (2012), and Phil Klay’s Redeployment (2014)—thus do more than merely represent the war experience: operating always in conversation with how the war has been constructed, the novels and stories …

Perceptions Of Care During The Prenatal Period: An Ethnonursing Study Of African American Childbearing Women In The Military Health System, Thecly Hines Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The military health system (MHS) offers prenatal care at no-cost, but African-American women eligible for prenatal care still have low/no/late utilization. No studies have sought to understand factors that influence African American women’s use of early and continuous prenatal care or their perceptions of the care they received in the military health care system. The purpose of this research was to understand how African American women in the MHS perceived their care during the prenatal period. Methodology: An ethnonursing study was conducted in two military treatment facilities. The sample comprised 21 informants. Findings: Leininger’s Four Phases of Ethnonursing Data …

Refugee-Led Organizations And The Obstacles They Face: A Comparative Study Of Syria Bright Future And The Bhutanese Community Association Of Pittsburgh, Priscila Elizabeth Cordoba Montoya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the nexus of our collective history, it has been recorded that human-induced political and social conflicts play a powerful role in displacing millions of people. The social insecurity produced by conflict persists long after they have ended, as refugees adjust to new circumstances, cope with loss, and attempt to regain a sense of normalcy. This study focuses on two distinct refugee-led organizations, namely a Syrian and a Bhutanese organization. These organizations operate in distinct stages of resettlement, in different parts of the world—one in a state of emergency, the other in resettlement in the United States. However, both organizations …

Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutics Of The Self: Living In The Truth, Fergus James Laughland Jan 2017

Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutics Of The Self: Living In The Truth, Fergus James Laughland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the relationship of selfhood and ethics from the competing philosophical frameworks developed by Paul Ricoeur and Alain Badiou. Seeking “nothing short of a full victory” on the “battlefield” of history, Badiou argues that Ricoeur deceives his readers by hiding the relationship of the self to history. The purpose of this deception is to defend a definition of history that allows for a Providential sense of history whereby the past could be actively forgotten whereby crimes could be forgiven. In this work I examine Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of the self as developed in Oneself as Another (Soi-même comme …

An Investigation Of Geriatric Microaggressions, Relations With Depression In Later Life, And The Moderating Effect Of Coping, Lisa Zimmerman Jan 2017

An Investigation Of Geriatric Microaggressions, Relations With Depression In Later Life, And The Moderating Effect Of Coping, Lisa Zimmerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative study examined the relationships between experiences of geriatric microaggressions, mental health, coping, and demographic characteristics. Geriatric microaggressions are subtle forms of discrimination experienced by the older adult population based upon negative societal perceptions of aging. Previous research has found relations among other forms of microaggressions, such as racial and sexual orientation, and mental health and coping; however, age related microaggressions remain relatively unexplored. The present sample consisted of 163 adults, age 60 and older, who were recruited primarily from the Western Pennsylvania area. The results revealed significant demographic differences in regard to the experiences of geriatric microaggressions. The …

Dialogic Praxes In Gabriel Marcel’S Philosophy: Hope For Being In A Technological World, Margaret M. Mullan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a technological age, communicators report conflicting experiences of presence and absence, connection and isolation. Dislocation, distraction, and disconnection present challenges for dialogue and reveal a world broken by technology. A world broken by technology invites a response. Philosopher Gabriel Marcel (1889-1973) offers insightful reflections on ways of being in a broken world. Marcel’s philosophical reflections on body, reflection, intersubjectivity, and technology form the primary content for this dissertation.

In Chapter One, Gabriel Marcel, philosopher, playwright, and international speaker, is introduced as participant in twentieth-century Paris, France. Marcel’s philosophy emerged in response to his societal, technological, and cultural contexts. Chapter …

Sacramental Theology Of Elochukwu Uzukwu In Light Of Vatican Ii And Its Application In African Contexts, Emmanuel Osigwe Jan 2017

Sacramental Theology Of Elochukwu Uzukwu In Light Of Vatican Ii And Its Application In African Contexts, Emmanuel Osigwe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recognition of the indispensable intersection of faith and culture has become a major trend in the contemporary theology. This renewed approach emphasizes various anthropologies and cultures as locations of divine activity. Specifically, the Second Vatican Council’s understanding of sacraments as pneumatological, and ecclesiological, beyond the dominant Christological motif, and its call for profound adaptation gives a wide latitude for rethinking the sacraments. This provision overcomes the danger of enforcing a monocultural model of sacramental celebration, which can submerge local voices and separate sacramentality from symbols and values that resonate differently with various peoples and cultures. This dissertation shows how Elochukwu …

Comparing The Urgent Needs Of Nebraska Small Business Owners Since The Great Recession, Abbey Rhodes Jan 2017

Comparing The Urgent Needs Of Nebraska Small Business Owners Since The Great Recession, Abbey Rhodes

Undergraduate Research Journal

The Center for Rural Affairs is a Nebraskan nonprofit organization whose mission is to establish strong rural communities while engaging local citizens in the decisions affecting their quality of life and the future of their communities (Bailey, Preston, & Beck, 2014). Established in 1973, the Center’s research shows that rural communities in Nebraska and the Great Plains suffered economic and social declines in the late 1980s and early 1990s due to a diminishing population and decreased demand for products and services. The REAP program was funded by the Small Business Administration in 1992 to address these challenges and to help …

Religiosity And The Impact On Relationship Quality, Siera Schwanz Jan 2017

Religiosity And The Impact On Relationship Quality, Siera Schwanz

Undergraduate Research Journal

Religiosity is important for relationship maintenance. However, past studies are inconsistent regarding the impact of individual and partner religiosity for relationship quality. In addition, many studies focus on married couples and use single-item measures of religiosity. The goal of this study is to test the religiosity of relationships as a mediator between individual and partner religiosity for relationship quality of dating couples, using stringent measures of centrality of religiosity. Participants completed a survey regarding their religiosity, their partners’ religiosity, and the religiosity of their relationships (N=119). Mediation analyses showed that relationship religiosity fully mediated the relationship between individual religiosity and …

Transgender Inclusion In Higher Education: An Examination Of Perceived Inclusion And Personal Wellbeing On Four College Campuses, Tiff Weekley Jan 2017

Transgender Inclusion In Higher Education: An Examination Of Perceived Inclusion And Personal Wellbeing On Four College Campuses, Tiff Weekley

Undergraduate Research Journal

Research finds that the success of transgender students is heavily reliant upon how welcome and safe they feel on their own campus. This paper aims to discuss transgender inclusion in higher education and the effects of inclusion/exclusion on transgender students. How does transgender inclusion in areas such as policy, administration, residency, and health care have an impact on the personal wellbeing of transgender students in higher education? Through a survey of 51 self-identified transgender individuals who have completed at least one semester of higher education in Nebraska, this paper describes transgender inclusion in higher education and the personal wellbeing of …

Cedaw’S Broad Language Contributes To A Lack Of Gender Equality Progress In Canada, Caitlin Williams Jan 2017

Cedaw’S Broad Language Contributes To A Lack Of Gender Equality Progress In Canada, Caitlin Williams

Undergraduate Research Journal

International treaties and agreements like CEDAW are the subject of a large body of scholarly research on the relevance of these conventions to the behavior of states. A subsection of that research focuses on the language of treaties and how they affect implementation of the goals within the treaties. This paper examines the language of CEDAW and assesses how its broadness has effected gender equality implementation in Canada since their ratification in 1981. The scholarly literature on the language of CEDAW is divided between scholars who argue the language is either too broad and leaves the document up to interpretation …

Therapeutic Alliance And Adherence To A Plant-Based Eating Plan To Treat Chronic Disease, Michiel A. Zyl, Lesley M. Harris, Rachel Hale

Social Work Faculty Publications

Background: Systematic reviews show that a plant-based diet offers many benefits to patients with a variety of chronic illnesses. However, more research is needed to show how plant-based diets are successfully prescribed by physicians and what supports are essential for adherence. The primary research questions in this study were: Is therapeutic alliance correlated with adherence to the eating plan?; Does a change in therapeutic alliance result in a change in adherence?; and How do patients view the doctor-patient relationship and adherence? Methods: This multiple methods feasibility study combined cross-sectional pre-post and six-month follow-up survey, a focus group and case study …

Gendered Synthetic Love: Real Dolls And The Construction Of Intimacy, Desirée Ciambrone, Voonchin Phua, Erin N. Avery

Sociology Faculty Publications

Real Dolls are life-size, anatomically correct figures. Except for their lifelessness, they are made to look and feel like humans. The availability of Real Dolls allows us to examine the social significance of relationships and gender expectations in a new light. In this paper, we are interested in how the Real Dolls are being offered and accepted as alternative partners. Specifically, we examine the relationship between the commodification of the body and the agency individuals have to create intimacy and connection. We conducted an exploratory content analysis of the customer testimonials on the Real Doll website. Results suggest that the …

While religion, law, and social mores may seem reliable guides in the professions, I argue here that traditional ethics escapes some of the limitations born by these three approaches.

Religious Affiliation And Women's Labor Patterns In U.S. Counties, Andrew Schaefer Jan 2017

Religious Affiliation And Women's Labor Patterns In U.S. Counties, Andrew Schaefer

Doctoral Dissertations

In the past 50 years, the United States has experienced a large influx of women, particularly those with young children, into the paid labor force. Concurrently, adults across the country have steadily moved away from organized religion. Nonetheless, sociological research has documented relationships between affiliation with conservative religious groups and negative attitudes towards women’s labor force participation. Further, research has shown that women in conservative religious groups like evangelical Protestants and Mormons are less likely than others to enter the labor force upon getting married and, among those who work, more likely to work a reduced schedule.

Building upon this …

Are 21st Century After School Programs An Effective Academic Intervention For Elementary School Students Attending High Poverty Schools?, Jennifer Scarpati Jan 2017

Are 21st Century After School Programs An Effective Academic Intervention For Elementary School Students Attending High Poverty Schools?, Jennifer Scarpati

Doctoral Dissertations

In America, millions of children are living in poverty and/or attending high poverty schools. These students, on average, score lower on assessments of math and reading achievement than their more affluent peers. The federal government budgets money each year towards interventions targeted to raise the achievement of students living in poverty. 21st Century after school programs have received billions of dollars over the past 20 years towards this goal.

This is a secondary analysis of students attending five diverse, high poverty elementary schools in New Hampshire between 2008 and 2013. Ordinary Least Squares multiple regression analyses were used to estimate …

Edward Channing’S Writing Revolution: Composition Prehistory At Harvard, 1819-1851, Bradfield Edward Dittrich Jan 2017

Edward Channing’S Writing Revolution: Composition Prehistory At Harvard, 1819-1851, Bradfield Edward Dittrich

Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation, building on the work of John Brereton, Robert Connors, and others returns to the Harvard University Archives to reconstruct the Harvard rhetoric program under the leadership of Edward Tyrrel Channing from 1819 to 1851. During that time, coincident with the industrial revolution, U.S. publishers experienced a period of rapid growth as the cost of production for books, newspapers, and magazines dropped, and demand for print grew among a nascent middle class. Against that backdrop, and in spite of considerable resistance, Channing engineered a substantial shift at Harvard from an oratory-based curriculum to a writing-based one, just as the …

Educational theorists and researchers have emphasized the importance of museum spaces as sites of learning and engagement for their ability to supplement and enhance the school curriculum. These individuals often describing the importance of museums in relation to a set of progressive educational ideals such as the provision of experiences that enhance a learner’s capacity to live and learn in a diverse democratic society. As interdisciplinary community teaching spaces, museums can serve as a natural nexus for socially engaged cross-disciplinary teaching and learning, fostering and supporting the investigation of questions about how to best understand, curate, and educate around difficult …

From Dislocation To Disengagement: The Experiences Of Low-Income And First Generation College Students, Azure S. Mcginty

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In this thesis, I examine the experiences of low-income and first generation college students who are enrolled members of the TRiO Student Support Program at the University of Montana. This program is designed to cater to the specific academic struggles of low-income and first generation college students. There is a wealth of scholarly literature concerning this population of students and their risk of dropping out of college. Researchers have found these students are susceptible to habitus dislocation, which causes many of these students to feel torn between acclimating to college and forfeiting their membership in the working-class. One of the …

Immaterial Attachments: Performing Iphone And The Rhetorics Of Dematerialization, Codey Ryan Bills Jan 2017

Immaterial Attachments: Performing Iphone And The Rhetorics Of Dematerialization, Codey Ryan Bills

Theses - ALL

Engaging with rhetorical studies, performance studies, and surveillance studies, this thesis attempts to outline the ideological construction of the experience of iPhone, underlining how this experience—and its performance—is imbricated with conceptions of social control. To do this, I begin with the cultural oscillation between extreme psychological attachment to Apple’s iPhone and its complementary disposability. How can an object generate such attachment, yet remain disposable? To get at this question, I examine how attachment and disposability are layered together in an experience of iPhone structured by rhetorics of dematerialization. These are visual and discursive fragments that, together, construct an ideological impulse …

Who's Driving You? Driver Data Remains Unprotected Under Coppa And Shine The Light, Marisa Tashman

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

As our lives become more driven by technology, California’s privacy laws fall short of protecting our personally identifiable information. Vehicles in particular present an increasing privacy concern, as our automobiles become more computer and less car. Cars today have increasingly sophisticated capabilities, stemming from connected technology and sensors, and their ability to capture geolocation and biometric data. This data can be used to make inferences about drivers’ behavioral patterns and daily habits. This Article analyzes whether California’s privacy laws—California Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) and Shine the Light—adequately address privacy concerns regarding driver data collected by the connected car. This …

Mass Monitoring, Avlana Eisenberg Jan 2017

Mass Monitoring, Avlana Eisenberg

Scholarly Publications

Business is booming for criminal justice monitoring technology: these days “ankle bracelet” refers as often to an electronic monitor as to jewelry. Indeed, the explosive growth of electronic monitoring (“EM”) for criminal justice purposes—a phenomenon which this Article terms “mass monitoring”—is among the most overlooked features of the otherwise well-known phenomenon of mass incarceration.

This Article addresses the fundamental question of whether EM is punishment. It finds that the origins and history of EM as a progressive alternative to incarceration—a punitive sanction—support characterization of EM as punitive, and that EM comports with the goals of dominant punishment theories. Yet new …

Inspirational Teaching In Higher Education: What Does It Look, Sound And Feel Like?, James G. Derounian Mr

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This article discusses the qualities of inspirational teaching in higher education (HE). It starts by arguing how topical this subject is, given emphasis world-wide on quality assurance measures, such as the UK Government’s 2016 Teaching Excellence Framework TEF. The paper then moves to review the academic and practice literature in order to outline what comprises inspirational teaching in HE institutions. These components – in the form of key words - are extracted from the literature and then tested through primary research.

Lecturers, at an English University, agreed to circulate a short survey to final year social sciences undergraduates. Fifty-two student …

Hosting The Displaced – And Being Hosted, Cynthia Caron

Sustainability and Social Justice

A local family hosting a displaced family in their home is becoming a well-recognised form of shelter for families in displacement. Understanding how displaced persons and their hosts experience hosting can help governments and humanitarian agencies design programme activities to promote its success and sustainability.
