It Has Taken Me Years To Understand What It Means To Be Latino, Fernando Rivera
It Has Taken Me Years To Understand What It Means To Be Latino, Fernando Rivera
UCF Forum
When I was growing up in Puerto Rico, the term Latino did not make much sense to me. Back then, I was me, a kid from Barceloneta (in northern Puerto Rico) who went to Catholic school and loved to play baseball.

Religiousness And Perceived God Perfectionism Among Elite Athletes, Benjamin J. Houltberg, Kenneth T. Wang, Sarah A. Schnitker
Religiousness And Perceived God Perfectionism Among Elite Athletes, Benjamin J. Houltberg, Kenneth T. Wang, Sarah A. Schnitker
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
Little research has been conducted examining the link between athletes’ religious beliefs and practices and coping with the pressures related to elite competition. The purpose of the study was to investigate athletes’ global self-worth and perfectionistic concerns as key variables that link religiousness and perceived God perfectionism to dealing with performance failure and appraisals of upcoming competition. Self-report data was collected from a sample of 99 elite athletes (Mdn age = 22, 48% female, 89% believed in God) that were currently competing at a NCAA D1, professional or Olympic level. We used structural equation modeling to test direct and indirect …

Christianity And Sport Psychology: One Aspect Of Cultural Competence, Trevor J. Egli, Leslee A. Fisher
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
There is currently a dearth of literature relating to how applied sport psychology practitioners might work with a Christian sportsperson (Czech et al., 2004, Egli et al., 2014). Therefore, the purpose of this article is to provide practical suggestions for sport psychology practitioners based on relevant research related to Christianity and sport psychology as well as personal and professional experience. We first explain the various sport psychology roles before providing a brief review of literature. Studies related to Christian athletes, Christian coaches, Christian prayer within sport, and sport psychology consultants’ experiences of spirituality are presented. Lastly, the authors include four …

Exploring The Role Of Spirituality And Spiritual Beliefs In The Pursuit Of Excellence And Attainment Of Peak Performance In Professional Athletes, Ashley Ballard, Charles H. Wilson Jr.
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
Little research has been found which examines the assessment of spirituality in sport performers and its possible role in performance enhancement. The goal of the current study was to understand if and how spirituality impacts athleticism. The subjective experiences of Christian spirituality in an American World Sprinter (male), a British Olympic Sprint Canoe Racer (female), and a retired American Minor League Baseball player (male) were analyzed through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) (Smith & Osborn, 2003). Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data leading to three major themes: “The Belief and Confidence in God”, “Individual and Communal Prayer”, and “The Influential …

Health Information Seeking On The Internet: How Graduate And Senior Level College Students Determine Credibility, Khairul Islam
Health Information Seeking On The Internet: How Graduate And Senior Level College Students Determine Credibility, Khairul Islam
Student Theses and Dissertations
The current study observed that the college students’ health information seeking on the Internet was mainly reactive, upon their experience of health issues. They check the online resources mainly to acquire knowledge about their particular health problems. Sometimes the students also google health information proactively, which denoted their extra consciousness about their health and wellness. The college students apply their subjective health knowledge and the Internet skills to make sure that they have retrieved a reliable information that include matching the retrieved information with health symptoms, browsing lists, crosscheck with multiple sources, reputation, interpersonal reference, perceived health belief, past experiences, …
Helping Children Understand: Using Picture Books To Age – Appropriately Explain Dance-Movement Therapy And Childhood Cancer, Megan Schaefer
Helping Children Understand: Using Picture Books To Age – Appropriately Explain Dance-Movement Therapy And Childhood Cancer, Megan Schaefer
Honors Theses
Cancer is the leading cause of childhood death by disease, and there are many different therapies available to patients. One of the most promising forms of therapy is Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT). DMT is an engaging and creative form of rehabilitation, and focuses on the interaction between the body and mind. With this exercise, patients are able to express their emotional processes through physical movement, allowing for an alternate form of communication.
The way that children engage in DMT is highly influenced by their age and developmental stage. When children are presented with a new task, it may be necessary for …
Failing Food Supply: Permaculture's Potential, John Faltin
Failing Food Supply: Permaculture's Potential, John Faltin
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Conventional agriculture is the currently leading production method to grow crops in the western hemisphere. Long-term sustainability of the system and all the components is secondary to producing high yields each growing season, which leads to issues such as erosion and reduced soil quality. Other agricultural production methods such as permaculture aim to build soil and improve quality every growing season. This experiment intends to look at the potential of permaculture to improve soil quality on small-scales at the end of each growing season. The parameters to gauge success are a larger concentration of macronutrients at the end of the …
An Ethnographic Exploration Of Pokémon Go, Ketzia Abramson
An Ethnographic Exploration Of Pokémon Go, Ketzia Abramson
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The mobile app game, “Pokémon GO” became a worldwide phenomenon immediately following its initial release in the summer of 2016. Now, more than a year later, despite its fall from social domination and decline in popularity, POGO is still at the forefront for better understanding the future of communication and socialization in today’s ever growing digital age. This ethnographic study, aided by field research, observations, and literature review of both the app itself as well as the ‘Poké-verse,’ provides an in-depth analysis of how and why a mobile gaming app that utilizes no new forms of technology (augmented reality combined …
Vincent De Paul And The Empowerment Of Women, Louise Sullivan
Vincent De Paul And The Empowerment Of Women, Louise Sullivan
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
The year 2017, marking the 400th Anniversary of the birth of the Vincentian Charism, has proven to be one of celebration for the entire Vincentian Family. While thousands of women are taking part in these celebrations around the world, the role women played in the birth and development of the charism is often overlooked. To do so however, is to miss a singularly significant aspect of Vincent de Paul’s genius, namely, the mission of charity he confided to the laity and particularly to women. Vincent de Paul’s life and his works would become what they were and what they continue …

The U.S. Heath Care Experience, Cristian Montes
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
This research project intends to look in depth into the U.S. health care system specifically the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The overview of the ACA will be evaluated to see if it has reached all its objectives it was pursuing prior to being signed into law in 2010. The questions we seek to answer is if the ACA is working or not. Additionally the project will also overview health care systems in other countries and understand how other private insurance functions along with how countries with universal health care and how its people are able to benefit from these specific …
Disproportionate Disenfranchisement In The United States: Race And Felon Disenfranchisement From The Jim Crow Era To The Era Of Black Lives Matter, Amber Fletcher
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
The purpose of this study is to re-examine the policy of felon disenfranchisement through analysis of its historical lineage from the Jim Crow Era to the contemporary era of Black Lives Matter. Review of previous research indicates a race bias in its early implementation meant to prevent Blacks from exercising the right to vote both before and after the Fifteenth Amendment in 1780. Disenfranchisement is understood to prevent the exercise of full United States citizenship for felons and ex-felons who are disproportionately Black. Through a constructivist research paradigm, this critical interpretivist study will seek to further understand the socially constructed …
Can Goal-Setting Improve Hospital Volunteers' Intrinsic Motivation?, Genesis Orellana
Can Goal-Setting Improve Hospital Volunteers' Intrinsic Motivation?, Genesis Orellana
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
With the objective of increasing volunteer retention, hospital administrators are interested in fostering volunteers’ motivation to continue working in the departments in which they have been placed. However, there is limited research on hospital volunteers’ motivation and whether setting goals will affect their motivation. The purpose of my research, therefore, is to examine whether hospital volunteers who set personal goals will increase their intrinsic motivation and tenure at a particular site. My research question is: does a goal-setting intervention affect the intrinsic motivation of hospital volunteers? Volunteer participants, 16-25 years old, will be recruited from a local medical care facility. …
Analysis Of Gender Differences In Authentic Science Inquiry Practices, Arianna Garcia
Analysis Of Gender Differences In Authentic Science Inquiry Practices, Arianna Garcia
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
The purpose of this project is to study differences in male versus female science epistemology as reflected in their practices during authentic science inquiry. Understanding an individual’s science epistemology is important to develop better methods of teaching authentic science inquiry. Science epistemology refers to the beliefs people have about the process of performing scientific inquiry and how scientific information is generated. In particular, students may believe science is a simple process with definite conclusions previously established by professionals, or that science is a complex field with many unanswered questions which require creative and unconventional processes to expose. Scientific inquiry in …

Kids Make Sense... And They Vote: The Importance Of Child Study In Learning To Teach Responsively, Frederick Erickson
Occasional Paper Series
A lecture that discusses the "developmental-interaction" perspective and practice that has become the hallmark of Bank Street. Erickson builds upon the relations of mutual influence among students, teachers, and learning environments, and taking account of the relations between local practice within the small-scale "here and now" interactional ecosystems of immediate learning environments and the workings of culture, language, and society across more distal connections in social space and time.

Global Advances in Business Communication
Sensitivity to diversity now demands a strategic understanding of the importance of cross-cultural communication competence in every action in organizations, communities, and nations throughout the world. This article contains seven micro-cases, each of which highlights a discussion of communication and cultural impact. The cases range from issues related to handshakes, communication with powerful people, collaborating in a divergent culture, unintended impact in meetings, and regional pronunciation differences. The cases include discussion questions, references for additional reading, and one unique feature: a “bumper sticker” summary. The article features a section on Approaching the Challenges. This discusses major communication and cultural theories, …
Caring For Workers, Martha T. Mccluskey
Caring For Workers, Martha T. Mccluskey
Maine Law Review
This essay examines the question of conflict between market work and family care from the angle of family caretaking labor for workers rather than for dependents. Feminist legal scholars and activists have been concerned for generations about the effect of women's unpaid caretaking work on women's participation and success in the wage labor market. Better public support for this gendered family care work is crucial to many leading visions of feminist legal and economic change. Recent welfare reforms, however, have increased the extent to which public policy treats caretaking instead as a personal responsibility (or a sign of personal irresponsibility) …
Telecommuting: The Escher Stairway Of Work/Family Conflict, Michelle A. Travis
Telecommuting: The Escher Stairway Of Work/Family Conflict, Michelle A. Travis
Maine Law Review
According to Working Mother magazine, telecommuting is a “wonderful arrangement for working moms.” Advertisements for telecommuting jobs and related technologies show us pictures of these happy telecommuting moms, who are conducting important business on the telephone or typing busily at their computers, as their smiling toddlers play quietly by their sides or sit contentedly in their laps. Some employers have offered this wonderful experience in direct response to concerns raised by “women's issues” committees. That was probably just what Jack Nilles had in mind when he first coined the term “telecommuting” in the 1970s and described it as a way …

The Miseducation Of Welfare Reform: Denying The Promise Of Postsecondary Education, Rebekah J. Smith, Luisa S. Deprez, Sandra S. Butler
Maine Law Review
When Congress enacted “welfare reform” in 1996, decades of progress in assisting low-income mothers obtain a college education in order to escape poverty was nearly eradicated. The federal welfare reform law strongly discouraged states from incorporating postsecondary education into their welfare reform programs and focused instead on “work-first” policies. As a direct result, hundreds of thousands of low-income mothers across the country were forced to drop out of college and find jobs in order to comply with strict “work-first” welfare rules. Despite the pressure imposed by the federal law, the State of Maine persevered in its effort to make college …

SURGE
Whenever anybody asks me about my experience studying abroad, I lie. I tell them that it was transformative, that I returned a more confident, learned, and enlightened person. I tell them all of the things I wish were true, pretending that all of the dreams I had about how studying abroad would affect me were actually the reality of my experience. [excerpt]

Challenge And Hope In The North Country, Lawrence Hamilton, Linda Fogg, Curt Grimm
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Lawrence Hamilton, Linda Fogg, and Curt Grimm report on a 2017 survey that asked North Country residents about their perceptions, hopes, and concerns regarding this region. Many of the same questions had been asked on earlier surveys in 2007 and 2010, providing a unique comparative perspective on what has changed or stayed much the same. The authors report that over these years, North Country (northern New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont) residents’ positive views of life in their region have mostly held steady, or in some cases improved, over the past ten years. Residents also express optimism …
