The Role Of Trauma And Poverty In Decision-Making: Implications For Otda Practices, Carolyn Hilarski Ph.D.
The Role Of Trauma And Poverty In Decision-Making: Implications For Otda Practices, Carolyn Hilarski Ph.D.
Public Assistance Development Programs
Decision-making is defined as a method of selecting a particular option among a set of alternatives expecting to produce a desirable outcome. Decision-making is a complex process and can be particularly daunting depending upon an individual’s circumstances. Adults seeking financial assistance and other supports from public and private human services agencies may have significant challenges with the decision-making process due to their current circumstances.
Research suggests poverty affects higher-level thinking skills, including decision-making. One explanation poses a relationship between the state of poverty, the stress/trauma response, and impaired decision-making. For example, studies indicate that when people are experiencing fear and …

Objective: A growing body of research finds that darker skin tone is often associated with poorer physical and mental health in Blacks. However, the psychosocial mechanisms underlying the skin tone-health link remain elusive. The present study seeks to address this knowledge gap by investigating the direct and indirect (through perceived discrimination, socioeconomic status, and self-esteem) effects of skin tone on self-reported physical and mental health.
Design: An urban sample of 130 Blacks aged 35 and above completed a self-administered computerized survey as a part of larger cross-sectional study.
Results: Self-esteem played a particularly important role in mediating the associations between …

Pathways To Delinquency And Substance Use Among African American Youth: Does Future Orientation Mediate The Effects Of Peer Norms And Parental Monitoring?, Dexter R. Voisin
Faculty Scholarship
The following study assessed whether future orientation mediated the effects of peer norms and parental monitoring on delinquency and substance use among 549 African American adolescents. Structural equation modeling computed direct and indirect (meditational) relationships between parental monitoring and peer norms through future orientation. Parental monitoring significantly correlated with lower delinquency through future orientation (B = −.05, standard deviation =.01, p <.01). Future orientation mediated more than quarter (27.70%) of the total effect of parental monitoring on delinquency. Overall findings underscore the importance of strengthening resilience factors for African American youth, especially those who live in low-income communities.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between selected social network characteristics and engagement among faculty at a research university (RU/VH). In 2013, a restructuring initiative targeted seven departments from different colleges at a public research university (RU/VH) located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States with a student population of more than 30,000. These departments were restructured to form a new academic college within the university. The archival sample for this study includes the faculty of the newly formed college who were in attendance at the initial college faculty meeting.

The Almost Great Escape: The Continuing Tourism Development Of Croatia As A Destination, Jennifer N. Wohlgamuth
International ResearchScape Journal
The tourism industry in Croatia is experiencing a slower development than other European countries. Because of their current union in the communist state of Yugoslavia and the Civil War between Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Croatian Tourism Board needs to recreate a stable infrastructure in which to grow their tourism. Some of the occurring issues with current Croatian tourism is high seasonality, lack of multiple foreign languages, underdeveloped transportation structures, and homogenization of Croatian culture. This paper offers a brief history of Croatian tourism, current developments, current development issues, and suggestions for a change in managerial structure to increase the …
Journalism And Mass Communication Textbook Representations Of Verbal Media Skills: Implications For Students With Speech Disabilities, Elia M. Powers, Beth Haller
Journalism And Mass Communication Textbook Representations Of Verbal Media Skills: Implications For Students With Speech Disabilities, Elia M. Powers, Beth Haller
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This study examines representation of disabilities by conducting a qualitative content analysis of how 41 journalism/mass communication textbooks frame the ideal standards of verbal communication for media professionals. Textbooks are integral to students’ understanding of professional norms and may influence career decisions. Results show that textbooks rarely address the topic of speech disabilities, describing them as “roadblocks to success.” Instead, authors often address best practices in broadcast voicing and the value of projecting confidence in interviews and press conferences. What are the explicit and implicit messages for students with speech disabilities such as stuttering? We argue that such framing is …

Social Class And The Establishment Of The London Metropolitan Police Force, Michelle C. Zachary
University Honors Theses
This research compiles information pertaining to the discourse surrounding the study of class-based systems as it relates to the establishment of our modern policing systems. Focus is on the London Metropolitan Police Force, est. 1829. Analysis of a collection of information from the fields of sociology, history, criminology, and anthropology revealed that there is an undeniable relationship between class structures in society and systems of social control. From there, two main sociological theories; conflict and consensus, are used to examine the relationship between the London Metropolitan Police and the class systems of England in the early-mid 1800's.

A-1 Children's Participation Rights, Michelet William
Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship
This paper presents an overview of the concept of children’s participation from a human rights perspective, using the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child as framework. It emphasizes the importance of children’s active participation in decisions and actions that relate to their advancement and that of their community. Drawing on examples primarily from Haiti, the paper proposes three basic rationales for children’s participation: 1) historically, they are key actors of social and political changes; 2) their participation enhances order and stability; and 3) their participation enhances provision and protection rights. As right-holders, children should not be treated …
Western Balkan Security And The European Union: Taming Securitization On The Fringe Of Europe, Djordje N. Tomic
Western Balkan Security And The European Union: Taming Securitization On The Fringe Of Europe, Djordje N. Tomic
The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development
The paper investigates the patterns of securitization within and from the perspective of the Western Balkan countries, in the light of the external influences on the regional security. The ongoing migrant/refugee crisis, particularly at its peak during 2015 and 2016, is analyzed as an indicative case of the multilevel context for the dominant political discourse in the region. The countries most directly involved in the ‘Balkan route’ provided responses that differed in the extent of (de)securitization. The governments were exposed to incentives and pressures from different levels. Within this analytical framework, the argument proceeds in three stages. First, security studies …
Confronting Capitalism: Traditional Movements & Alternatives, Steve Mcgiffen, Patrick Clairzier
Confronting Capitalism: Traditional Movements & Alternatives, Steve Mcgiffen, Patrick Clairzier
The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development
Capitalism has developed into a dangerous hindrance to any possibility of human progress, if ‘progress’ is defined not by the availability of ever more impressive gadgetry, but by a reduction in poverty, the spreading of prosperity and the conservation of a livable environment. Clearly, the left project in the 20th century was partially successful in raising living standards, and access to basic services such as health care and education in developed countries and for many elsewhere. However, these achievements are now under threat. Moreover, the broader capitalist narrative states there are no alternatives to this system and any endeavor that …

Closing The Gap: An Analysis Of The Musical Elements Contributing To Hip-Hop’S Emergence Into Popular Culture, Grant Knox
Scholars Week
This paper explores the musical evolution of hip-hop and the techniques that have influenced such growth. Hip-hop music’s pioneers established a genre that would not only prove to be self-sustaining, but allow for a diverse array of influences to contribute to its growth. An art form that was once preserved for minorities and often considered a lower form of intellectual art is growing closer to mainstream music. Topics such as the orchestration and production of music, influence of other genres, harmonic analysis, and the diversity within the genre itself are discussed with an emphasis on hip-hop artists of the previous …
Book Review Solidarity Without Borders: Gramscian Perspectives On Migration And Civil Society Alliances, Edited By Óscar García Agustín And Martin Bak Jørgensen, David Feldman
The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development
In recent years, migration has emerged as one of the most politically charged issues in global society. From the Bangladeshi government's harsh treatment of thousands of Rohingya families fleeing the Burmese army’s genocidal campaign against them in late summer of 2017, to the Trump administration's decision sustained attack on the new “sanctuary movement” and attempts to further militarize the southern border of the United States, news headlines and social media around the world are filled with images of repression against migrants, alongside impassioned calls for solidarity. Despite its ubiquity, the coverage of these events tends to remain rather superficial, making …

Consent Decrees, The Enlightenment, And The "Modern" Social Contract: A Case Study From Bates, Olmstead, And Maine's Separation Of Powers Doctrine, Dana E. Prescott
Maine Law Review
On December 17, 2004, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, sitting as the Law Court, issued its decision in Bates v. Department of Behavioral & Developmental Services, which affirmed in part, and vacated in part, the decision of Superior Court Chief Justice Nancy Mills, and remanded for further proceedings in the so-called Augusta Mental Health Institute (AMHI) Consent Decree case. In the underlying litigation, patients at the mental health hospital filed motions for sanctions and findings of contempt alleging the State of Maine failed to comply with the 1990 Consent Decree and incorporated settlement agreement. After a seventeen-day trial on whether …
Alexis De Tocqueville And American Constitutional Law: On Democracy, The Majority Will, Individual Rights, Federalism, Religion, Civic Associations And Originalist Constitutional Theory, Philip C. Kissam
Maine Law Review
Count Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America has been said to be "at once the best book ever written on democracy and the best book ever written on America. " This praise should perhaps be tempered by consideration of Tocqueville' s purposes and the historical circumstances within which he worked and understood both democracy and America. Yet Tocqueville's insights into American democracy as of the 1830s undoubtedly constitute a rich source of constitutional thought-either as support for particular constitutional principles or as constitutional ideas that should be contested. In a recent notable instance, John McGinnis has argued that Tocqueville's ideas …
