Developing A Racial Equity Stance: Moving Philanthropy Beyond Diversity Statements, Maegan Scott
Developing A Racial Equity Stance: Moving Philanthropy Beyond Diversity Statements, Maegan Scott
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past several years the national conversation about race, inequality, and power in the United States has grown in both urgency and intensity. In parallel to these social trends, more businesses, nonprofit organizations, and philanthropies are becoming better informed about the role of race and ethnicity in social and economic and disparities. The purpose of this study was to conduct action research to develop a racial equity stance at the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation in Washington, DC. This study also examined the role of cultural competence in supporting the development of a racial equity stance. The impetus …
Toward Better Discharge Decision-Making For Violent Offenders In Forensic Mental Health Settings: A Critical Analysis Of The Literature, Sara Laniado
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the United States are institutions abundant with violent offenders who have been found not guilty by reason of insanity (NGI). The decision to release these insanity acquittees into the community is a vital one, both for the patient and the larger community. While these decisions should be informed by evaluations that combine clinicians’ opinions with validated tools of assessment, no standard of care regarding such evaluations exists. Forensic specialists are thus often left to base discharge decisions on clinical judgment alone. This dissertation assumed a critical review of the theoretical and empirical literature relevant to conditional release decisions of …
A Phenomenological Investigation Of The Factors That Influence Motivation, Recruitment And Retention Of Volunteers Age 65 And Over, Carol Landry
Theses and Dissertations
Nonprofit agencies rely on continued support from volunteers, many who are 65 years of age or older, to provide aid and services to local community. However, community nonprofits have experienced a recent decline in volunteerism over the last six years. With the number of adults age 65 and over expected to double by 2060 in the United States, this twofold population could address the decline in volunteerism for nonprofit agencies. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research was to explore and identify factors that influence motivation, recruitment and retention of volunteers age 65 and over. The study aimed to enhance …
Social Support Communication Behavior, Depression Symptomatology, And Marital Satisfaction Among Distressed Couples, Kaddy Revolorio
Social Support Communication Behavior, Depression Symptomatology, And Marital Satisfaction Among Distressed Couples, Kaddy Revolorio
Theses and Dissertations
The relationships between individual depression symptomatology, marital satisfaction, and social support communication behaviors were examined. Social support communication behaviors of partners as a moderator of the relationship between their own individual depression symptomatology and marital satisfaction was also examined. This study included 96 chronically and seriously distressed heterosexual married couples seeking couple therapy. This study found no relationship between marital satisfaction and depressive symptomatology and no relationship between depression symptomatology and positive and negative social support (p > .05). A significant interaction between gender and marital satisfaction in predictive depressive symptomatology was found (p < .05). Negative social support was significantly negatively related to marital satisfaction (p < .01). Positive social support was significantly positively related to marital satisfaction (p < .001). Social support did not moderate the relationship between depression symptoms and marital satisfaction (p > .05).
Millennials And Meaningfulness At Work, Daena Lee
Millennials And Meaningfulness At Work, Daena Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Meaningfulness at work has been shown to be a positive contributor to employee engagement, performance, commitment and an extensive list of other desirable factors. The Millennial generation appears to be the largest and fastest growing generation since the Baby Boomers. Some managers have said some Millennials seem difficult to manage because their expectations of work upon entering the workforce seem so much higher than previous generations. This qualitative research project explored how Millennials at a small business find meaningfulness at work and to what extent their leaders create an environment of meaningfulness. Millennials at a small business were interviewed to …
Active Games: An Examination Of User Engagement To Define Design Recommendations, Pamela N. Martinez
Active Games: An Examination Of User Engagement To Define Design Recommendations, Pamela N. Martinez
Theses and Dissertations
Active gaming is a form of video gaming that requires full body motion or varying degrees of physical activity to play a game. While active gaming has gained momentum, there is a lack of studies that provide insight on how they should be designed, specifically components of active games make them engaging. This study identifies, analyzes and categorizes specific design mechanics and features used in active games. It answers the question: Which, if any, game mechanics and features can a panel of experts in academia, health and the game industry agree on as valuable and impactful to the construction of …
Intergenerational Ontology & Leadership: Uniting The Multigenerational Workforce, Gabrielle Ellerbrock
Intergenerational Ontology & Leadership: Uniting The Multigenerational Workforce, Gabrielle Ellerbrock
Theses and Dissertations
The multigenerational workforce offers a wide landscape of knowledge and successful practices that can propel organizational success. Currently, however, only 20% of organizations have a formal, strategic program in place for fostering intergenerational interaction. By overlooking intergenerational strategies, organizations are not experiencing the tangible results derived from harnessing the strengths offered by each generation and across the generational spectrum. This dissertation focuses on building what can be termed the interactional bandwidth of cross-generational relationships through the use of ontological principles and leadership development resources: the Gallup organization’s Clifton StrengthsFinder and the Myers & Briggs Foundation’s Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Through addressing …

What experiences (relationships, professional, and personal) as well as motivational factors shape the life course of women in corporate settings who pursue or choose not to pursue a flexible schedule, and how have the experiences impacted work-life integration decisions? 2. What similarities and differences exist, if any, between women who opted for a flexible schedule and those who chose not to pursue flexible options? 3. What are …
Diversity Climate In One California Community College: A Descriptive Quantitative Study, Sokha Song
Diversity Climate In One California Community College: A Descriptive Quantitative Study, Sokha Song
Theses and Dissertations
Although significant relationships have been found between cultural diversity and organizational performance as perceived by faculty and staff members at four-year public universities and faculty and staff members at two private universities, no contemporary studies could be located that explored the perceptions of public community college faculty and staff members relative to their college’s climate of cultural diversity. This gap is a major shortcoming in the diversity climate literature given that community colleges are becoming increasingly characterized by cultural diversity. This quantitative research study is designed to analyze the diversity climate at one California community college considering the three pronged …

Engineering Professors’ Perspectives On Gender And Assessment Of Teamwork, Kacey Beddoes, Grace Panther
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Teamwork is an important component of engineering education programs; however, when not facilitated well, it can be a site of gender biases. The aim of this article is to thematically explore what and how engineering professors think about gender in the assessment of teamwork. In 2014 and 2015, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 39 engineering professors in the United States. Interviews covered a wide range of topics, with one section of the interviews devoted to teamwork specifically. For this article, the parts of the interviews about assessment of teamwork are analyzed. It was found that most participants were unaware of …
Revolutionary Fathers: Republican Fatherhood And The American Revolution And Early Republic 1763-1814, Travis Jaquess Jaquess
Revolutionary Fathers: Republican Fatherhood And The American Revolution And Early Republic 1763-1814, Travis Jaquess Jaquess
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines American fathers in the eighteenth century and argues that the American Revolution, both the war itself and the ideology it created, affected attitudes towards and practices of fatherhood. Historians have characterized the father/son relationship in the Revolutionary period as one of filial rebellion against their patriarchal fathers. My work finds, conversely, that because of their experience in the Revolution, ideas such as liberty and equality which spread throughout the colonies, and additional opportunities available to industrious young men due to national independence, fathers actively prepared their sons for an independent life free from patronage, massive inheritances, and …

Attention Deficit Identity Discourse: Exploring The Ableist Limitations And The Liberative Potential Of The Contested Adhd Self, Nathan T. Stewart
Attention Deficit Identity Discourse: Exploring The Ableist Limitations And The Liberative Potential Of The Contested Adhd Self, Nathan T. Stewart
Wayne State University Dissertations
The specific objective of this project is to elaborate general rhetorical resources and strategies that can allow for ADHDers to both cultivate/reclaim a positive sense of self in the face of multiple forms of stigmatizing discourse and begin the process of challenging that discourse. Working from a disability studies perspective, I identify both challenges and opportunities to develop a positive sense of self through the examination of nostalgia in ADHD discourse, polysemic ADHD medical discourse, and the use of counternarratives as a resource to reframe stigmatizing master narratives. This project concludes by emphasizing that those with what I identify as …
Mass Shootings As Issue Management Exigencies And Focusing Events For Public Policy Debates, Melvin Gupton
Mass Shootings As Issue Management Exigencies And Focusing Events For Public Policy Debates, Melvin Gupton
Wayne State University Dissertations
This content analysis of multiple mass shooting cases examines a crisis genre that is not as frequently studied as other crises such as natural disasters or organizational exigencies. Though just as rich with stakeholders’ communicative exchanges and neatly traversing the three crisis stages, mass shootings have yet to be fully elaborated. To further the examination of these crises, this dissertation identifies those actors who hold the principal stakes in the aftermath of a mass shooting incident, and explores what these stakeholders are saying. By applying focusing events and issue management theories, it uncovers the prominent public policy issues reported in …

Into Ireland: An Analysis Of Cultural Hybridity, Immigration, Food, And Place In The Silicon Docks Market In Dublin, Ireland, Grace Katharine Elizabeth Myers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ireland is still recovering from the Great Recession that devastated much of the world in 2007. Simultaneously, the country is also dealing with increasing diversity and multiculturalism during a time of rising economic stability. This thesis analyzes the effects of globalization on the local expressions and perceptions of changing cultural identities through an examination of interactions between Irish patrons and Non-Irish vendors and employees in a weekly lunchtime food market located in the Silicon Docks Business Park in Dublin, Ireland. The actions which occur in the market demonstrate the influences of cross-cultural contact and heterogeneity on the Irish display of …
Stereotypes And The Self-Perceptions Of Black Women: How Places And Identity Strategies Matter, Brieann Avery
Stereotypes And The Self-Perceptions Of Black Women: How Places And Identity Strategies Matter, Brieann Avery
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Black women are one of the most oppressed groups in America because they possess two qualities of being a minority in terms of race and gender. Whether it is magazines, television shows, or music videos, controlling images are established in the preservation of hegemonic power and to condone the remaining marginalization of black women. Black women are seen mostly sexually exploited in hip-hop. Black women are continuously being oppressed through hip-hop’s constructions created to reinforce ideals about race and gender positioning and inferiority in a hegemonic masculine world, Hip-hop promotes negative images of black women as sexual objects and the …

A Phenomenographic Study Of Student Engagement Using Gis-Story Maps In An Eighth-Grade Social Studies Classroom, Esohe E. Egiebor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative phenomenographic study explores students' engagement using gis-story maps in an eighth-grade social studies classroom from a southeastern United States’ school district. The study answered the following questions: (1) how do eighth-grade students perceive their engagement with social studies when it is taught using story maps? (2) how do eighth-grade students perceive the relationship between gis, story maps to their own life? This study investigates students' engagement from the perspective of the students rather than the teacher. Qualitative data collection involved classroom observations, student-written reflections, and oral interviews of fourteen student-participants. The data analysis reveals that students perceive story …

Deconstructing The Winner's Circle, Taylar Bolds
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has investigated black women in mass feminized sports cultures and spaces such as gymnastics, beauty pageants, and cheerleading, finding patterns of hegemonic ideals and the preference for "white" standards. I expand the narrative to include the twirling culture by investigating how female twirlers, and in particular black female twirlers, perform and embody femininity and whiteness. Using data from ten (10) semi-structured interviews and observations of three baton-twirling competitions, I investigate how female baton twirlers competing in one of the largest American baton twirling organizations embody femininity, as well as negotiate raced and gendered criteria in what I call …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Keynote and plenary speakers at professional conferences serve as highly visible role models for early-career scientists and provide recognition of scientific excellence. This recognition may be particularly important for women, who are underrepresented in senior positions in the biological sciences. To evaluate whether conferences fulfill this potential, we examined distinguished speakers at North American ecology conferences between 2000 and 2015 and compared these data with the percentage of women ecologists at diverse career stages. We found that 15%–35% (x = 28%, n = 809) of the distinguished speakers were women, which is significantly lower than the percentage of female ecology …

Bell Hooks' "Enactment Of Non-Domination" In The "Practice Of Speaking In A Loving And Caring Manner": An Autoethnography Of A Saudi "Widow's Son", Braik Aldoshan
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
The Prophet Mohammed lost his parents when he was a child, and because he was an orphan, he believed that anyone caring for an orphan would hold a special place in the hereafter. Often when children in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia lose the father, as the author did, there is a stigma attached to the boy with no father, and a tremendous hardship is placed on the family. Having married at age 11 to her third cousin 10 years her senior and giving birth to three children, and expecting another child, his mother became a widow. He analyzes his …
