Building Blocks: A Multi-Theoretical Preventative Model To Promote Post-Traumatic Growth, Jared S. Becknell
Building Blocks: A Multi-Theoretical Preventative Model To Promote Post-Traumatic Growth, Jared S. Becknell
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
The following is an exploratory model to understand the factors that promote growth after traumatic events, also known as post-traumatic growth (PTG). Additionally, the hope is to inspire further research and create quantitative data regarding the effectiveness of these factors, add additional interventions and integrate into crisis/trauma paradigms during recovery. Therefore, clients would be more equipped to handle the possibility of another event. When PTG occurs, victims of trauma experience increased positive well-being, life satisfaction and regain a new compassion for meaning or purpose in their life. By utilizing the following interventions, victims of past traumatic events can live a …

Ethics For Helping Professionals: Teaching A Framework That Supports Collaborative Ethical Decision-Making, Laura E. Kaplan, Valerie Bryan, Scott Sanders
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
Social work professionals are often employed in interdisciplinary settings with nursing, psychology, medical, and psychiatric professionals. All of these professions have commonality in their codes of ethics such as the primary principle that we work for the client or patient’s benefit. However, we also know that these same codes do not specifically address ethical dilemmas and their resolution (ACA, 2014, ANA, 2011, AMA/ APA, 2013, AMA,2001, APA, 2010, NASW, 2015). There are numerous decision making models that can be used as a step-by-step process in deciding what to do when confronted by a dilemma (Congress, 1996; Strom-Gottfried, 2007). All of …

Motivational interviewing (MI) is an efficacious treatment for alcohol use disorders. MI is thought to enhance motivation via a combination of 2 therapeutic strategies or active ingredients: 1 relational and 1 directional. The primary aim of this study was to examine MI's hypothesized active ingredients using a dismantling design. Problem drinkers (N = 139) seeking treatment were randomized to 1 of 3 conditions: MI, relational MI without the directional elements labeled spirit-only MI (SOMI), or a nontherapy control condition and followed for 8 weeks. Those assigned to MI or SOMI received 4 sessions of treatment over 8 weeks. All participants …

Sbirt Screening In Primary Care Of Women Of Reproductive Age To Aid In The Identification Of Alcohol Use Patterns Focusing On Prevention Of Fetal Alcohol Exposure, Isabel Vesely
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
The over consumption of alcohol can directly correlate with negative effects on health and quality of life. When vulnerable subjects such as pregnant women and subsequently the fetus is alcohol exposed lifelong detrimental consequences can ensue such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Jones, Smith, Ulleland, & Streissguth, 1973). Although most women reduce their alcohol intake during pregnancy, 45% of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned (Finer & Zolna, 2016). The combination of social patterns of alcohol use in women of childbearing age and the prevalence of unintended pregnancy set the stage for an alcohol exposed fetus. Late recognition of …

Because within-host Mycobacterium tuberculosis diversity complicates diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis (TB), we measured diversity prevalence and associated factors among 3,098 pulmonary TB patients in Lima, Peru. The 161 patients with polyclonal infection were more likely than the 115 with clonal or the 2,822 with simple infections to have multidrug-resistant TB.

Wage Theft: Pilfering Paychecks, One Lunch At A Time, James Levault
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The United States Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, is charged with enforcing the payment of minimum wage and overtime to employees. A common problem occurs when an employee performs work during their unpaid lunch. According to DOL regulations, an employee is entitled to payment for time worked whether they were requested to work or if the employer was completely unaware that work was being performed by the employee. Two tests are used to determine whether an employee should be paid for the work performed. The first test is the completely relieved of duty test and the second test …

Queerness And Dating Violence Among Adolescent Mothers In Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews
Social Work Faculty Publications
Adolescent mothers, queer, and foster youth are all groups at heightened vulnerability for teen dating violence victimization. It is unknown how mothers in residential foster care perceive and experience violence within same-sex relationships. Literature suggests, however, that violence within these contexts may be met by minimization and even denial on behalf of practitioners (e.g., social workers) who may not have a comprehensive understanding of how to best serve queer clients, especially clients who may not be automatically perceived as queer (e.g., adolescent mothers). The present study utilized a mixed qualitative methodological approach to triangulate the perspectives of program staff ( …

The manufacturing firms and service delivery vendors in the UAE have recently realised the importance of supply chain management (SCM) applications, but they are still not entirely used for improving firms' performance, capability, and market competitiveness. This study highlights the capacity of information sharing in supply chain management to enhance the capabilities of Tawazun's subsidiaries as key players in the UAE defence industry. Personal interviews were conducted with (20) top and senior managers working in four of these subsidiaries. The qualitative analysis of their statements revealed that information sharing across different SCM departments is strategically important in enhancing firms' capability, …

The Determinants Of Entrepreneurial Success In Oman: A Holistic Approach, Mohammed Abdallah Saif Al Muqbali
Business Administration Dissertations
The literature on determinants of entrepreneurial success calls for additional research especially in GCC countries where studies in this field are limited. There is not yet clear consensus upon the right set of determinants for entrepreneurial success. Studies conclude that the set of determinants of entrepreneurship success can be vary from country to country depending on a country’s economic or market conditions, business trends, culture, human capital, natural resources and demographics. This study investigates determinants of entrepreneurial success in Oman. It also looks at two moderators, alertness to opportunity and intrinsic motivation, with the purpose of finding their impact on …

Smart contracts are self-executing digital transactions using decentralized cryptographic mechanisms for enforcement. They were theorized more than twenty years ago, but the recent development of Bitcoin and blockchain technologies has rekindled excitement about their potential among technologists and industry. Startup companies and major enterprises alike are now developing smart contract solutions for an array of markets, purporting to offer a digital bypass around traditional contract law. For legal scholars, smart contracts pose a significant question: Do smart contracts offer a superior solution to the problems that contract law addresses? In this article, we aim to understand both the potential and …

Trends in the field of service among those with alcohol and other drug addictions highlight the urgent need for schools of social work to effectively train students to serve clients with substance use disorders, and have cultural humility to effectively serve disproportionately affected LGBT consumers. Online surveys and interviews examined perceptions of graduate social work students and alumni in a certified alcohol and drug counselor program, along with several service providers within an urban setting in the US. Results indicated that students and alumni did not feel adequately prepared through coursework to practice with LGBT populations affected by substance use, …

Are Academically At-Risk College Students More Entitled Than Their Non-At-Risk Peers?, Rebekah Reysen, Matthew Reysen, Suzanne Degges-White
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
Academic Entitlement (AE) is a belief held by students that they deserve high grades in school despite a lack of effort put forth into their work (Chowning & Campbell, 2009). Although AE has become a major focus of conversation amongst higher education professionals, few studies have been published on this topic in relationship to student retention and success. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between academic performance and AE for two college student groups. Results included academically at-risk students scoring significantly higher on AE than the non-at-risk group, with AE being negatively correlated with GPA.

In libraries and archives, efforts to document underrepresented communities and diversify collections can be fraught with political tension. We explore an interdepartmental collaboration to create and preserve a digital collection documenting the Urban Native Relocation Program of the mid- to late-twentieth century in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Involving the Grand Valley State University Libraries, the Kutsche Office of Local History, and the university’s Native American Advisory Board, the project serves as a model not just for collaborative collection development but also for community engagement and outreach. We find that process is as important as product in developing collaborative digital collections.

Ethnic Conflict And Gender Inequality In Education: The Case Of Turkey, Ramazan Kilinc, Jody L. Neathery-Castro, Selin Akyuz

Although conflict remains a major obstacle to development in many areas of the world, its impact on education has been rarely studied. This article investigates the relationship between conflict and gender equality, focusing on the schooling of the girls in the conflict-ridden regions of Turkey. Patriarchy is the most important determinant of low educational levels among girls in Southeastern Turkey. However, ethnic conflict exacerbates male-dominant traditions and blocks economic development, reinforcing patriarchal norms and limiting girls’ school attendance. Yet, by provoking political mobilization around a Kurdish identity, ethnic conflict may undermine patriarchy and unintentionally promote girls’ education.
