Visually Impaired Individuals' Perspectives On Obtaining And Maintaining Employment, Nadine Donaldson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The employment rate among people with visual impairment is very low compared to sighted individuals. Negative attitudes, stereotypes, and misconceptions are held against people with visual impairment by employers, family members, and the general public. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of 10 people with visual impairment regarding challenges in obtaining and maintaining employment. A transcendental phenomenological conceptual framework was used to guide the study. Data from semistructured interviews were coded and categorized to identify themes. Results revealed 5 essential themes, which showed to be barriers to employment. The themes are: travel difficulties, …
College Instructors' Experiences Transitioning To Inverted Classroom Instruction, Glenda Maria Brown
College Instructors' Experiences Transitioning To Inverted Classroom Instruction, Glenda Maria Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Lecture methods in higher education continue to be the most often used form of lesson delivery, although they seem to be less effective in promoting adult students' learning and engagement. Many higher education instructors have incorporated inverted classroom (IC) methods to increase student engagement and learning. The purpose of this qualitative interview study was to gain an understanding of college instructors' decision-making processes and experiences transitioning from lecture-based instruction to IC and the factors attributed to that transition. Knowles's andragogy theory, Kolb's experiential learning theory, and Rogers's diffusion of innovations provided the conceptual framework for the study. Eight college-level instructors …

Examining The Role Of Emotional Intelligence In The Work And Life Balance Of Foster Care Workers, Pamela Applewhite Applewhite
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Foster care workers are an important part of the social service system, as they are the first line of support for children without families or who have been subjected to tragic events leading to their need for foster care. Foster care workers often experience work-life boundary issues due to the emotional nature of their work. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between (a) emotional intelligence and absenteeism and (b) emotional intelligence and work-life balance with foster care workers. Data was collected from foster care workers in the state of South Carolina employed with the Department …

Lived Experiences Of Same Sex Attracted Men With Competing Spiritual And Sexual Identities, Robert Hedge
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study focused on understanding the lived experiences of men from a conservative Christian background who had disidentified as gay and subordinated their sexual identity to their spiritual identity. The study was intended to create understanding of the social, cultural, and valuative frameworks that informed and guided their attempts at resolving the conflict between spiritual and sexual identity. The study included three research questions: What are the emergent core themes associated with competing spiritual and sexual identities? How has the response of their faith community affected their struggle? How has the response of the gay community affected their struggle? Through …
Educational Advocacy And The Foster Child, Jennifer Loetzerich
Educational Advocacy And The Foster Child, Jennifer Loetzerich
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In Georgia, there are high rates of instability in foster care, and each time a child changes placement, his or her support networks are gone until he or she can rebuild them. The purpose of this case study was to explore if current stakeholders provide effective support and assistance to professionals and others who assist foster students with their educational needs. This case study used a conceptual framework based on Rankism, in which students move up and down the rungs of the ladder of their social system. Data were collected via interviews with a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) worker, …

Perceptions Of Leadership And Employee Performance In Child Welfare Agencies, Deatrice Haney
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Child welfare leaders reflect their organizations' mission and vision and are entrusted to provide support to employees, who in turn provide services to one of the most vulnerable populations, children. Little, however is known about how leaders perceive their roles and responsibilities in terms of providing sufficient supervisory and guidance to child welfare workers in order to support organizational goals. Guided by Houses' path-goal theory, this phenomenological study examined the perceptions of child welfare leaders related to leadership behaviors, strategies to improve administration, work performance, communication, and fostering an inclusive work environment. A sample of 16 participants working as administrators, …

Perceptions About Cognitive Enhancement Therapy Among Regional Mental Health Providers: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Adam A. Loose
DNP Projects
Cognitive Enhancement Therapy (CET) is a program, developed at the University of Pittsburgh, to improve cognitive deficits experienced by people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Since its implementation in various settings, CET has demonstrated positive outcomes for patients in many cognitive domains. This study took a mixed methods approach to assess the interest and knowledge of mental health providers at a regional level and a local mental health facility in particular, about beginning a CET program. The quantitative study obtained data from evaluations administered during two CET training events at a local mental health facility. Digitally recorded qualitative interviews were conducted with …

Evaluation Of The Healthy-Heart, Healthy-Brain Program, Sooksai Kaewbua
DNP Projects
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a group-based, psychoeducational program on the knowledge of healthy diet and eating behaviors of adults with mental-health diagnoses in an inpatient psychiatric setting.
Background and Significance: In a given year, adults with mental-health diagnoses have a higher risk of mortality relative to the general population. Mortality from natural causes among individuals with mental-health disorders is similar to the leading causes of death found nationwide, including cardiovascular diseases. There is a growing body of evidence showing a relationship between the health of clients’ hearts and brains. Thus, it is …
Don’T Pull The Plug On Bioethics Mediation: The Use Of Mediation In Health Care Settings And End Of Life Situations, Amy Moorkamp
Don’T Pull The Plug On Bioethics Mediation: The Use Of Mediation In Health Care Settings And End Of Life Situations, Amy Moorkamp
Journal of Dispute Resolution
A hefty decision, such as the life or death of a loved one, requires more than a few minutes of deliberation and a handful of outside consultations. Delicate, emotional, and potentially contentious medical decisions compel a structured, compassionate approach to produce quality and well-informed results. Due to the magnitude of the decision being made, as well as the abundance of other considerations, (emotional, religious, historic, financial, etc.) the case for a creative, problem-solving process of dispute resolution, such as mediation, is ripe.
This Comment will explore the use of mediation in bioethical disputes. In Part II, the Comment will give …

Online Teacher Professional Development For Gifted Education: Examining The Impact Of A New Pedagogical Model, Matthew J. Edinger
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications
This paper theoretically develops and examines the outcomes of a pilot study that evaluates the PACKaGE Model of online Teacher Professional Development (the Model). The Model was created to facilitate positive pedagogical change within gifted education teachers’ practice, attitude, collaboration, content knowledge, and goal effectiveness. Kirkpatrick and Kirkpatrick’s (2006) model of training evaluation suggests that trainees should evaluate the training for satisfaction at the time the training is completed, as well as six months after, to evaluate for behavior change. Applying Kirkpatrick and Kirkpatrick’s (2006) model, findings indicate that teachers were immediately satisfied with the Model’s effectiveness, adequacy and overall …

Two key design decisions are elaborated around (a) the selection of appropriate projects and packaged materials that distance education students can receive by mail to participate in making, and (b) the choice of an online platform for distance education students to document their design processes for assessment purposes and peer interaction and learning. This design case is relevant to a variety of online communities who may wish to engage in maker activities as well as isolated face-to-face …
Acceptance Of Marginalized Couples, Shaquela Hargrove
Acceptance Of Marginalized Couples, Shaquela Hargrove
Honors Theses
Marginalized couples (i.e., those seen as dissimilar from the socialized standard) are still not completely accepted (Lehmiller & Agnew, 2006). Almost 50% of Americans still disapprove of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) couples (Changing Attitudes on Gay Marriage, 2015) and almost 13% disapprove of interracial/interethnic couples (Newport, 2013). When these couples perceive stigma due to their relationships, negative outcomes such as higher levels of depression, can occur (LeBlanc, Frost, & Wight, 2015). Previous research has identified personal factors that are similar for the acceptance of both types of marginalized couples: non-White, Republican, politically conservative, men, less educated, more religious, and …

Changing Perceptions Of Loss: The Influence Of Generation Effects And Message Framing, Kaylee Brown
Changing Perceptions Of Loss: The Influence Of Generation Effects And Message Framing, Kaylee Brown
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This study is a three-part survey that examines how loss can be experienced differently based on one's generation and the way a message about loss is framed. More specifically, participants of all ages read a mock article that framed loss experiences positively or negatively, and then participants answered questions regarding their own loss experiences. It was hypothesized that, due to generational variance, older vs. younger individuals may deal with loss quite differently and, as such, may react to the positively and negatively framed loss articles as a function of their ages. As hypothesized, significant relationships among article type and age …
The Rest Of The Story: Exploring The Overall Functioning And Maturational Experiences Of Former Foster Youth In Middle Adulthood, Jessica Lynn Yang
The Rest Of The Story: Exploring The Overall Functioning And Maturational Experiences Of Former Foster Youth In Middle Adulthood, Jessica Lynn Yang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Middle adulthood as a developmental stage is often neglected in developmental research, yet it is vitally important to the cohesiveness of the life span as this is a time when integrating the experiences of the earlier developmental periods such as emerging adulthood, setting the stage for healthy aging. Emerging adulthood is but one unique stage in the life course, and situating this phase within a holistic developmental context is essential. Doing so illuminates the ways in which the past influences current functioning and the ways in which one's present developmental state sets the stage for later development. To date, no …

Should Lip Dosing Be Reconsidered When Performing Open Food Challenges?, Carina Venter, Kate Maslin, Jane Grundy, Gillian Glasbey, Tara Dean
School of Nursing and Midwifery
To the Editor, A lip dose or labial food challenge (LFC) is a simple, easy to perform method of diagnosis that could potentially be a convenient alternative to conducting an oral food challenge in children (1). Rance and Dutau (1) published a paper on LFC in 1997 demonstrating their clinical utility, according to the technique described by Moneret-Vautrin et al. (2). This involved a drop of the allergen being placed on the lower lip and left for 10 seconds to two minutes, with the mouth slightly opened. However, in the study by Rance et al. (1), children with positive LFC …

Close Encounters: A Feminist Legal Theory Analysis Of The State Treatment Of Female Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Jessica Dixon Weaver
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
This article explores the way in which the law currently deals with sexual violence against female children in the home – evaluating the ways in which the state has access to the private realm of the family and the ways in which civil and criminal legal systems deal with this type of trauma to girls across a spectrum of time. Research shows that the child protection system only captures a small percentage of sexual abuse right after it happens. However, research also shows that female child sex abuse survivors appear in statistically significant numbers among other groups – drug and …
The Effects Of Ego Depletion And Emotional Intelligence On Risk-Taking, Travis Bishop
The Effects Of Ego Depletion And Emotional Intelligence On Risk-Taking, Travis Bishop
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Ego depletion theory postulates that the ability to exert self-control depends upon the availability of a limited mental resource. In this experiment, we investigated the effects of ego depletion on risky decision-making. We also examined the moderating effect emotional intelligence may have on this relationship. First, participants completed a trait emotional intelligence questionnaire and a self-control task. This was followed by a mood questionnaire and a series of risky-decision scenarios. Results showed (1) participants who were depleted made more risky decisions than non-depleted participants, (2) no differences in perceived task effort between groups, (3) no evidence of a moderating effect …

Addiction And Substance Abuse In Nevada, Andrea Blin
Social Health of Nevada Reports
Substance abuse is an issue with serious health and societal consequences in Nevada and throughout the nation. In 2016, drug overdoses were responsible for approximately 64,000 deaths in the United States, surpassing motor vehicle deaths by 60 percent (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2018). Recent attention has been focused on the spike in opioid use and its implications for public health. Nationally, deaths from opioid overdoses increased from 6.1 per 100,000 in 1999 to 19.8 per 100,000 in 2016. Nevada’s experience has mirrored national trends, with the drug overdose death rate in the state increasing from 11.5 per 100,000 in …

Intraracialized, Anti-Queer Microaggressions Towards Queer Black Men Research Prospectus, Camisha Fagan, Anna Smedley-López
McNair Poster Presentations
Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership (Sue et al., 2007). As intersectional microaggression research remains understudied (Sterzing et al., 2017), the purpose of this project is to extend the platform by documenting the experiences that Queer Black males experience from microaggressions intraracially in their communities. Through qualitative research and an intersectional framework, I plan to examine the impacts, experiences, and coping methods that Queer Black men encounter from intersectional microaggressions, and additionally code …

Background: Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) have worse health outcomes than other populations of people living with HIV. Contributing factors include lack of standard and comprehensive procedures for ALHIV transitioning from pediatric to adult care. This has contributed to poor retention at, and following transition, which is problematic especially in high ALHIV-burden, resource-limited settings like Nigeria. Methods: Using a two-arm cluster randomized control design, the Adolescent Coordinated Transition (ACT) trial will measure the comparative effectiveness of a graduated transition and organized support group intervention against the usual practice of abrupt transfer of Nigerian ALHIV from pediatric to adult care. This …
