Focus On Fidelity: Delivering What's Intended In A Multi-Site Randomized Clinical Trial, Janet D. Morrison, Alexa Stuifbergen
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Intervention fidelity, the degree to which an intervention study is carried out as proposed, is critical to ensuring internal validity, reliability and generalizability of research findings (Gearing et al., 2011; Goense, Boendermaker, & von Yperen, 2016). Unfortunately, intervention fidelity is infrequently reported in the research literature (Corely & Kim, 2016; Stone 2015). The absence of intervention fidelity reporting may contribute to dissemination of potentially low-efficacy or ineffective interventions into clinical practice. The purpose of this abstract is to explicate the strategies used to assess and monitor intervention fidelity in an ongoing multi-site clinical trial. The intervention fidelity strategies used …

Constructing A Reference Framework For Ecep Evaluation: A Constructive Grounded Theory, Shelina Bhamani, Nasreen Husain
Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
The purpose of this research study, which is a thesis investigation, was to develop a reference framework that can help program staff to evaluate quality in Early Childhood Education (ECE) settings. The study was approached with three questions. This paper presents the first question of the study that enables practitioners to understand what are the variables that best define quality in early childhood education. The grounded theory, design was approached to explore the experiences of 20 ECE experts in the field. The data analysis revealed eight main indicators, that are, holistic development, interactive teaching, trained practitioners, conducive learning environment, safe …

Working Together To Treat Tobacco Dependence Among Smokers With Serious Mental Illness, Rhonda Garrett Schwindt, Karen Hudmon, Kathy Lay, Angela Mcnelis, Jon Agley
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The prevalence of tobacco use among persons with mental illness exceeds the prevalence in the general population by a factor of 2 to 4. Despite strong evidence that tobacco cessation counseling by a health professional can approximately double patients" odds of quitting, clinicians across disciplines are reluctant to offer these individuals effective means by which to quit smoking. The purpose of this pilot study was to estimate the impact of an interprofessional tobacco education program on the perceived self-efficacy and self-rated counseling abilities of graduate health professions students to provide tobacco cessation counseling and their perceptions of interprofessional collaborative practice.

Mental Health Stigma And Perceived Practice Competence Among Nurse Practitioners: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study, Cara C. Young, Susan Calloway, Courtney Brown
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Approximately 50% of Americans will meet the criteria for a mental health disorder sometime during their life, and the majority of these illnesses begin in childhood and adolescence (Merikangas et al., 2010). Significant health disparities exist among those with a major mental illness who die 10 to 32 years earlier than the general population due to largely preventable causes (NIMH, 2011; Walker, McGee, & Druss, 2015). In order to reduce this health disparity, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2011) developed an action plan outlining specific strategies to integrate mental health promotion and mental illness prevention with chronic …

Importance Of Auxiliary Theories In Research On University-Community Partnerships: The Example Of Psychological Sense Of Community, N. Andrew Peterson, Paul W. Speer, Christina Hamme Peterson, Kristen Gilmore Powell, Peter Treitler, Yuqi Wang
Collaborations: A Journal of Community-Based Research and Practice
Psychological sense of community (PSOC) has long been recognized as a key element of successful collaborative initiatives, particularly university-community partnerships. A critical challenge involves the development of auxiliary theories that guide the specification of measurement models in studies of PSOC and other theoretical constructs. Auxiliary theories can be especially useful in clarifying the differences between scales and indexes, and how each is uniquely specified and validated. Scales are based on reflective measurement in which classical test theory can be applied (e.g., reliability estimation, confirmatory factor analysis) to evaluate scores that are hypothesized to be highly correlated and as representing manifestations …

Colorblind Ideology And Perceptions Of Minority Children During A Fictionalized Parent-Child Discipline Scene, Michelle R. Dunlap, Tong-An Shueh, Christina Burrell, Penney Jade Beaubrun
Human Development Faculty Publications
Belief in colorblind ideology among 200 social service providers and its associations with their evaluations of a fictionalized minority family were examined. Perceptions of the family in the first scenes of the movie Crooklyn included the mother’s competency, abusiveness, supportiveness, and irresponsibility, as well as her children’s respectfulness, obedience, lack of control, and aggressiveness. Colorblind ideology was operationalized as participants’ reported degree of belief that differences should be ignored when encountering others. Significant associations were found between degree of belief in ignoring differences and perceptions of the children as aggressive and out-of-control. Therefore, as the tendency to believe in ignoring …
Patients And Nurses And Doctors Oh My!: Nurse Retention From A Multi-Foci Aggression Perspective, Kevin Oliver Novak
Patients And Nurses And Doctors Oh My!: Nurse Retention From A Multi-Foci Aggression Perspective, Kevin Oliver Novak
Dissertations and Theses
Attrition is a serious issue in the nursing industry. One factor influencing rates of attrition in nursing is aggression victimization at work (Estryn-Behar et al., 2010). However, there is little research in the aggression literature that examines how aggression from different sources affects attrition (both job and career turnover) differently. This study attempts to better understand the linkages between aggression victimization and nursing attrition; specifically how aggression from different sources (i.e. patients/patients’ families, coworkers, and licensed independent practitioners) differentially affects retention factors (i.e. job satisfaction, turnover intentions, and career commitment). This study also attempts to understand the role that prosocial …

Eliminating Mental And Physical Health Disparities Through Culturally And Linguistically Centered Integrated Healthcare, Octavio N. Martinez Jr.
Eliminating Mental And Physical Health Disparities Through Culturally And Linguistically Centered Integrated Healthcare, Octavio N. Martinez Jr.
Journal of Family Strengths
Since the U.S. Surgeon General’s report on mental health (1999) declared mind and body to be inseparable, integrated healthcare, bringing the body and mind back together, has been gaining significant momentum across the nation as a preferred approach to care for people with co-morbid physical health and mental health conditions. Primary care settings often are the gateway to healthcare for racial and ethnic minority populations and individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP) and, as such, it has become the portal for identifying undiagnosed or untreated behavioral health disorders. An integrated holistic philosophical approach to behavioral healthcare provides an opportunity to …

Implementation Of The National Asthma Guidelines In A Residential Pediatric Clinic, Patricia A. Foster-Staples
Dissertations
Abstract
Purpose: Foster care children admitted to residential facilities are a unique and vulnerable group, many presenting with undiagnosed or poorly managed asthma. The alarming rate of residents admitted to a particular residential primary care clinic with a diagnosis of asthma led to the project question: “Based on record reviews, does staff education about the importance of utilizing the national guidelines for asthma education influence the implementation of such guidelines in a residential pediatric clinic?” The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement a systematic process to influence practice change. The project was conducted over a period …

Caught In The Middle: Intersectionality And Mental Health Among Asian Indian Women, Semran K. Mann, Lisa R. Roberts, Susanne Montgomery
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Our aim was to explore intersectional tensions affecting Asian-Indian immigrant women"s mental health.
Mental health is a serious and globally prevalent health care issue, though certain groups— such as immigrants— are specifically vulnerable to experiencing negative mental health consequences. Immigration alone is known to cause stress that can affect mental health, yet literature is lacking on AI immigrant mental health needs and preferences for care in the US. However, recent studies have identified AI women, both English and those with Punjabi language preference, to be at high risk of experiencing mental health issues (Roberts, Mann, Montgomery 2016; Roberts, Mann, …
Distinctive Factors Affecting The Legal Context Of End-Of-Life Medical Care For Older Persons, Marshall B. Kapp
Distinctive Factors Affecting The Legal Context Of End-Of-Life Medical Care For Older Persons, Marshall B. Kapp
Georgia State University Law Review
Current legal regulation of medical care for individuals approaching the end of life in the United States is predicated essentially on a factual model emanating from a series of high-profile judicial opinions concerning the rights of adults who become either permanently unconscious or are clearly going to die soon with or without aggressive attempts of curative therapy.
The need for a flexible, adaptable approach to medically treating people approaching the end of their lives, and a similar openness to possible modification of the legal framework within which treatment choices are made and implemented, are particularly important when older individuals are …

Risk For Cardiovascular Disease In Blacks With Hiv/Aids In America: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Calvin Odhiambo, Jessica Davis, Bernard Omolo
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) related to HIV infection is becoming a major public health concern in the United Stated. Epidemiologic studies show that prolonged use of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy, HIV/AIDS itself, and a combination of traditional vascular risk factors increase the risk for CVD among people with HIV/AIDS. However, little is known about any racial disparities in the risk for CVD in the HIV/AIDS population. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of literature on HIV/AIDS and CVD (June 1, 2010-July 31, 2014) through MEDLINE to examine whether and how HIV-positive African Americans are disproportionately affected by CVD compared to …

Residential Segregation, Neighborhood Social And Physical Context In Obesity Disparities In Hispanic Preschoolers: A Conceptual Model, Catherina Chang Martinez Phd(C), Nasar U. Ahmed Phd, Ruby A. Natale Phd, Psyd
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
During the last decade, there has been a significant inclusion in obesity prevention studies from individual characteristics to household factors then neighborhood factors. The study of place in the context of early childhood obesity studies has been limited to the food and physical built environment. With the persistent disparities in the prevalence of childhood obesity, and Hispanic minorities being increasingly affected, there is a need to reexamine existing models and develop new model conceptual frameworks to examine the role of place and residential segregation in the context of race, ethnicity, social position, and socioeconomic disparities. In the context of place …

"Not Your Mother's Pta": Women's Political Activism In Twentieth-Century America, Jennifer Lynn Mcpherson
History ETDs
Not Your Mother’s PTA: Women’s Political Activism in Twentieth-Century America provides the first in-depth study of women’s political activism in the National PTA and its local PTA units. It closely examines how women integrated themselves and their ideas on women’s and children’s welfare reform into government from the 1890s through the 1970s. This project explores the resources, strategies, and methods used by PTA women working for women and children’s interests at the local and national level, primarily in public schools and government agencies. Not Your Mother’s PTA challenges the subtext of the PTA mother/housewife and shows how women used the …

The oral presentation will report on two completed research projects which compare the levels of staff and student learning across two community based placements, one in the Vietnam highlands and one in a homelessness service in South Australia. Both community based placements provided health care to vulnerable and disadvantaged population groups. Community placements with vulnerable population groups provide nursing and midwifery students with the confidence needed to care for people with complex health and social issues in acute care settings. These placements enhanced the student"s clinical skills and linkages to psychosocial theories of human development. The Australian research project mixed …

Connecting Individuals With Social Services: The Academic Library's Role, Samantha G. Hines
Connecting Individuals With Social Services: The Academic Library's Role, Samantha G. Hines
Collaborative Librarianship
As socioeconomically-disadvantaged people become a core user base for libraries, some libraries have collaborated with non-library workers to connect their user communities with beneficial social services, which ties in with librarianship’s values of promoting social justice and providing for the common good. As public libraries earn attention and kudos for connecting their communities to social services, the question arises as to the role of the academic library in connecting our campus community with resources on services for societal needs. Working with existing campus and community organizations can create many positive networks for our library users, our institutions and our larger …
"Gift Of Life": Comparing Factors Involving Non-Directed Kidney Donor Motivation For Social Workers And Nurses, Cheryl K. Giefer
"Gift Of Life": Comparing Factors Involving Non-Directed Kidney Donor Motivation For Social Workers And Nurses, Cheryl K. Giefer
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: This research examines donor motivations using a research design from earlier investigations evaluating the persuasiveness of the National Kidney Foundation"s (NKF) altruistic "gift of life" frame. Earlier studies produced mixed results, showing, in particular, substantially more support for material incentives among an international sample of nursing professionals as compared to a convenience sample of college students. The purpose of this exploratory study is to compare nurses and social workers on each of three measures used as indicators of kidney donor motivation: 1) social distance between donor and recipient; 2) support for material incentives as a component of motivation to …
