Enhancing The Well-Being Of Older Adults And Young Adults With Developmental Disabilities Through Participation In An Intergenerational Community Garden: Participatory Action Research, Diane L. Keen
Doctorate of Nursing Science Dissertations
The purpose of this Participatory Action Research (PAR) study was to discover ways to enhance well-being in young adults with DD and older adults in the Oak Grove community. This dissertation details how PAR was used in the Oak Grove community to identify ways to enhance purpose and meaningful activity for older adults while developing positive relationships with younger adults with DD through qualitative methods.
Ryff and Keyes (1995) discovered that although some elements of well-being remain stable as a person ages, purpose-in-life drops significantly in older adults. In addition, young adults with developmental disabilities (DD) lack meaningful relationships, which …

A pilot study of a parenting intervention delivered by an interdisciplinary clinical team improved maternal indices for mothers enrolled in community mental health services. While intervention with this vulnerable and often stigmatized population is very challenging, our program was found to be feasible and acceptable in this community-based setting.

Experience-Based Co-Design: A Method For Patient And Family Engagement In System-Level Quality Improvement, Bianca Fucile, Erica Bridge, Charlene Duliban, Madelyn P. Law Dr.
Patient Experience Journal
Integrating patient and family member needs, wants and preferences in healthcare is of utmost importance. However, a standardized patient and family engagement model to understand these needs, wants and preferences in order to translate into high quality improvement activities is lacking. Experience based co-design (EBCD) is an approach that enables patients, family members and healthcare providers to co-design improvement initiatives together. In this study, EBCD was employed to: 1) assess the current state of information and educational resources at a local oncology center and 2) partner with patients, family members, and healthcare providers to create quality improvement initiatives targeting identified …
Romantic Discrimination And Children, Solangel Maldonado
Romantic Discrimination And Children, Solangel Maldonado
Chicago-Kent Law Review
In recent years, social scientists have used online dating sites to study the role of race in the dating and marriage market. This research has revealed a racialized and gendered hierarchy that disproportionately excludes African-Americans and Asian-American men. For decades, other researchers have studied the risks and outcomes for children who are raised in single-parent homes as compared to children raised by married parents.
Drawing on these studies, this Essay explores how racial preferences in the dating and marriage market potentially disadvantage the children of middle-class African-American women who lack or reject opportunities to intermarry relative to children of married …

Assessing Interprofessional Palliative Care Movie Simulation And Debriefing: A Multisite, Multinursing Track Perspective, Mary Val Palumbo, Kathleen Marie-Anne Huun
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
A scripted movie of interprofessional teamwork (palliative care of an ALS patient) can provide simulation experience for various tracks of nursing (traditional BSN, LPN-BSN, and RN-BSN) via face-to-face or online delivery modes. Evidence of student satisfaction, self-confidence in learning, and perceived interprofessional competency can be achieved through this simulation modality.

Using insights from employers and employees to generate evidence on employee financial wellness programs (EFWPs), this research report illustrates findings from a mixed-methods study assessing the potential of these programs to increase the financial stability of American workers. The research team surveyed employers that offered or were interested in offering an EFWP and subsequently conducted in-depth interviews with a subsample of those employers to acquire a greater understanding of survey responses. Further, the research team conducted intensive case studies, examining the relationship between EFWP providers and their clients as well as the dynamics of program delivery. These case studies benefitted …

Preventing Heart Failure Readmissions By Using A Risk-Stratification Tool, Anna Dermenchyan
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: To implement strategies to improve care and patients" experience and reduce readmissions for heart failure (HF) patients, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center accepted an invitation from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) to join the Patient Navigator Program (PNP). The goal for the program is for hospitals to establish a patient-centered focus that involves making hospitalization less stressful for patients by providing evidence-based quality improvement strategies. At the initiation of the program (Spring 2014), UCLA utilized a validated risk model, LACE index, to identify patients who are at high risk of readmissions before discharge. This tool has been used …

Risks And Protector Factors: Access To A Diagnosis And Services For A Child With Autism, Susan Agnes Bonis
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a growing global issue (Autism Speaks, 2016; World Health Organization, 2016) characterized by verbal and nonverbal social communication deficits, including difficulty following rules for conversation and forming and maintaining relationships (APA, 2013). A Logical Absurdity: Jeremy Bentham And The Auto-Icon, Anna Brenton Brawley
Episteme
Ever wonder what might be the most absurd idea to come out of the Age of Reason? This paper in the history of philosophy supplies one possibility: Jeremy Bentham’s Auto-Icon. This study places Bentham’s decision to preserve his physical body in the context of his full body of philosophical and social work, itself contextualized within the revolutionary ideas and advances of the Enlightenment. The author touches on Bentham’s philosophy, his fondness for invention and science, as well as his vehement religious and political critiques. It is argued that the Auto-Icon embodies Bentham’s desire to promote universal happiness and to set …

Background: Nursing doctoral programs exist in varying models around the world. While there are many measures of success for these programs, one way is through the collaborative opportunities a program provides and the success of the students in maximizing these collaborative efforts (Edwards, Rayman, Diffenderfer, & Stidham, 2016). Doctorally prepared nurses value opportunities to learn from each other and form professional contacts as they prepare for their future careers (Jairam & Kahl, 2012). Seeking international peers through a web-based platform can be used to increase collaboration and peer support.
Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to describe an international …

Background
Uganda’s national community health worker program involves volunteer Village Health Teams (VHTs) delivering basic health services and education. Evidence demonstrates their positive impact on health outcomes, particularly for Ugandans who would otherwise lack access to health services. Despite their impact, VHTs are not optimally supported and attrition is a growing problem. In this study, we examined the support needs and existing challenges of VHTs in two Ugandan districts and evaluated specific factors associated with long-term retention. We report on findings from a standardized survey of VHTs and exploratory interviews with key stakeholders and draw conclusions that inform efforts to …

Does Fathers' Involvement In Services Affect Mothers' Likelihood Of Reunification With Children Placed In Foster Care?, Amy D'Andrade
Does Fathers' Involvement In Services Affect Mothers' Likelihood Of Reunification With Children Placed In Foster Care?, Amy D'Andrade
Faculty Publications
Social science literature shows associations between fathers' involvement with their children and beneficial developmental outcomes of those children. A related but smaller body of research in the child welfare services arena has found measures of father involvement to be positively associated with beneficial child welfare outcomes, including child's reunification with parent after placement in foster care. However, the pathway by which father involvement affects reunification likelihood has not been determined. This study builds on the existing body of literature by testing a theoretical basis for the relationship between father involvement (measured as service use) and mothers' reunification in a model …
