The Title Of Liberty And Ancient Prophecy, Roseann Benson
The Title Of Liberty And Ancient Prophecy, Roseann Benson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Captain Moroni cites a prophecy regarding Joseph of Egypt and his posterity that is not recorded in the Bible. He accompanies the prophecy with a symbolic action to motivate his warriors to covenant to be faithful to their prophet Helaman and to keep the commandments lest God would not preserve them as he had Joseph.

Improvisation And Extemporaneous Change In The Book Of Mormon Part 1: Evidence Of An Imperfect, Authentic, Ancient Work Of Scripture, Gerald E. Smith
Improvisation And Extemporaneous Change In The Book Of Mormon Part 1: Evidence Of An Imperfect, Authentic, Ancient Work Of Scripture, Gerald E. Smith
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Joseph Smith made various refining changes to the Book of Mormon text, most of them minor and grammatical in nature. However, one type of textual change has been virtually unstudied in Book of Mormon scholarship: extemporaneous change that was present the moment Smith dictated the original text to his scribes. This type of change appears to have been improvisational, a fix or repair made in the middle of a thought or expression. I study these improvisations in depth — where they might appear historically, their purpose, and their authorship — in two articles. The evidence points to ancient authors and …
Looking Back, Almost Five Years On, Daniel C. Peterson
Looking Back, Almost Five Years On, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
As the axiom states, hindsight is 20/20. As Volume 24 of Interpreter: A Journal of Mormon Scripture nears the press, it seems relevant to look back to a tumultuous time nearly five years ago when the Interpreter Foundation was visualized and launched. If history has any value at all (particularly recent history), it provides a context for understanding the course on which we find ourselves. For the Interpreter Foundation, that course continues to be full of surprises and promise.

Looking Deeper Into Joseph Smith’S First Vision: Imagery, Cognitive Neuroscience, And The Construction Of Memory, Robert A. Rees
Looking Deeper Into Joseph Smith’S First Vision: Imagery, Cognitive Neuroscience, And The Construction Of Memory, Robert A. Rees
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Critics of Joseph Smith assert that he invented or imagined the First Vision and then deliberately altered the details in his subsequent f irst-person accounts of the event (also reflected in accounts recorded or related by others) to mislead his followers. That the details of the narrative changed so dramatically between the first version (1832) and the last authorized version (1842) is considered prima facie evidence that Joseph was deliberately inventing and embellishing his narrative to make it more credible. The only thing, say critics, that could possibly explain such divergent, and in some cases, radically different versions of the …
The Book Of Mormon Versus The Consensus Of Scholars: Surprises From The Disputed Longer Ending Of Mark, Part 2, Jeff Lindsay
The Book Of Mormon Versus The Consensus Of Scholars: Surprises From The Disputed Longer Ending Of Mark, Part 2, Jeff Lindsay
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Following the account of the ministry of Christ among the Nephites as recorded in the Book of Mormon, Christ gave a charge to His New World disciples (Mormon 9:22–25). These words are nearly like the commission of Christ to His apostles at the end of the Gospel of Mark (Mark 16:9–20). According to the general consensus of modern Bible scholars, Christ did not speak those words; they are a later addition. If so, this is a problem for the Book of Mormon. Fortunately, recent modern scholarship offers compelling reasons for overturning the old consensus against the longer ending of Mark. …

Should We Apologize For Apologetics?, Steven T. Densley Jr.
Should We Apologize For Apologetics?, Steven T. Densley Jr.
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
An analysis of the history, scope, and effectiveness of Mormon apologetics is long overdue. Unfortunately, Perspectives on Mormon T heology: Apologetics falls short of providing an in-depth analysis of the f ield and instead provides a very limited history, very little discussion of the scope of Mormon apologetics, and little discussion of the impact of Mormon apologists on Mormon thought. Furthermore, no attempt is made to discuss how apologetics has affected the arguments of critics of Mormonism. While a few articles do approach apologetics in a positive way, the work is largely critical of the activity of defending the Church …
Marjorie Newton On “The Mormons In Australia” — A Retrospective Review, Louis Midgley
Marjorie Newton On “The Mormons In Australia” — A Retrospective Review, Louis Midgley
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
This is a survey of Marjorie Newton’s account of Latter-day Saints in Australia which identifies the roots of her agenda — that is, what she was striving to accomplish in her first book in 1991 (and the other related essays) which she published before turning her attention to a criticism of the faith of Māori Latter-day Saints, first in 1998 and then in 2014. Midgley locates in her early publications on the Saints in Australia early signs of her controlling cultural Mormon agenda and hence how and why she insists that there has been a trampling of the Māori culture …

Rehearsing Justice: Theatre, Sexuality And The Sacred, Victoria Rue
Rehearsing Justice: Theatre, Sexuality And The Sacred, Victoria Rue
Faculty Publications, Social Sciences
The theatre actor’s process in a rehearsal hall is reality and metaphor. It can be a rehearsal for justice, where we can live freely. In this laboratory the actor becomes all of us. Like the actor, we inhabit our bodies and our sexualities, sometimes as spiritual practice, or as sacred and creative, even as incarnations. In particular, women’s bodies remember what it is like to be no-body and what it is like to be a some-body. The texts of women’s bodies contain their history of pain, wellness and illness. In creating a character, the actor creates a biography, an inner life, …
The Touch Of Translation: An Application Of Digital Tools To The Study Of Biblical Translation From 1511 To The Present, Kat Malone
Theses & ETDs
This thesis seeks to present the history and methodology of biblical translation through methods popularized by the Digital Humanities. The argument begins by exploring the history of biblical translation from 325 C.E. to the present. Then, it considers the influence of technology on the development of translations, as well as the cultural impact and social contexts. By examining this history, the focus of previous scholarship on “hapax legomena,” or words that only occur once in a text, becomes apparent. By performing a “distant reading” of five translations of the chapter Genesis, this thesis instead investigates the effect of large scale …
Salvation In View: Kierkegaard And Nishtani On “The Human Condition”, Jordan Colbert
Salvation In View: Kierkegaard And Nishtani On “The Human Condition”, Jordan Colbert
Theses & ETDs
This thesis tackles the question of “the human condition” from the perspective of religious studies. In order to gain clarity on this ambiguous expression, the thesis draws from two texts: The Sickness unto Death: A Christian Psychological Exposition for Upbuilding and Awakening, by 19th century Danish existentialist Soren Kierkegaard, and Religion and Nothingness, by 20th century Kyoto school philosopher Keiji Nishitani. These two presentations of “the human condition” are first explored through independent analyses. The analyses are then brought together through a modified application of Weberian Ideal Type Theory. This process depicts “the human condition” as a state of suffering …

Digitization Of New College’S Medieval Manuscripts, Adelle Singer
Theses & ETDs
This thesis involves the process of digitizing medieval manuscripts that were donated to New College in 2008-2009 by Larry Schoenberg. Included in this thesis are several chapters which delve into the digitization process, compare physical and digital archives, explore the benefits and challenges of digital manuscript archiving in proxy with academics and their research, a look into how medieval manuscripts have reached the general populace, and an evaluation of several digital archives from different institutions. The manuscript digitization project itself can be located on New College’s Digital Collections at http://ncf.sobek.ufl.edu/l/manu/all.

The Shingon Ajikan, Meditation On The Syllable ‘A’: An Analysis Of Components And Development, Ronald S. Green
The Shingon Ajikan, Meditation On The Syllable ‘A’: An Analysis Of Components And Development, Ronald S. Green
Philosophy and Religious Studies
This paper examines what has been described as the most basic and essential element of Kūkai’s (774-835) religio-philosophical system (Yamasaki 1988:190), meditation on the Sanskrit syllable ‘A’. According to Shingon Buddhist tradition, Kūkai introduced the meditation on the syllable ‘A’ (hereafter referred to as the Ajikan) into Japan in the early 9th century, at the time he transmitted the Shingon Dharma to that country from China. Materials clearly showing the origin and development of the Ajikan before Kūkai’s time have either not been discovered or have not been analyzed in relationship to the Ajikan. Indeed, some researchers have argued that …
Engaging Millennials: The Quest To Revive Their Participation And Commitment At Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, Gastonia, Nc, Kimberly Moore
Engaging Millennials: The Quest To Revive Their Participation And Commitment At Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, Gastonia, Nc, Kimberly Moore
Doctor of Ministry Projects
There are times when a church can have the look of success, but the zeal of that ministry is slowly diminishing. The older generation continues to do their best to keep ministry viable and moving, but there is a younger generation who does not see the importance of committing to anything beyond the Sunday morning experience. Through a series of Bible studies, sermons, outreach and moments of fellowship, this project engages the millennial generation and discovers ways to move them toward some level of commitment and participation within the Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, Gastonia, NC. It is becoming more and …
Church Hurt: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Survivors, Raquel Anderson
Church Hurt: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Survivors, Raquel Anderson
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
The church is often seen as a place where people go to seek love, peace, and acceptance. Increasingly, there are occasions where these needs are not being met. Mansfield (2012) used the term “Ecclesia exitus ...the decision to permanently question one’s faith, trust in the church leadership and/or withdraw from a congregation you had considered to be your ‘church home,” to describe the experience of Church Hurt. This study seeks to describe the experience of those who have undergone church hurt. Abraham Maslow in his seminal 1943 paper A Theory of Human Motivation and his subsequent book, Motivation and Personality, …

Narrative Medicine And Health Care Ethics: Religious And Literary Approaches To Patient Identity And Clinical Practice, Tara Flanagan Tracy
Narrative Medicine And Health Care Ethics: Religious And Literary Approaches To Patient Identity And Clinical Practice, Tara Flanagan Tracy
Dissertations
This dissertation examines practices of narrative medicine and moral identity for end-of-life patients, with special attention given to Aristotle's Poetics and the work of Paul Ricoeur. While noting the genuine value of narrative medicine for clinicians, I examine the limits of self-narration for patients who are unable to offer a linear, coherent narrative of their lives due to cognitive deficits such as Alzheimer's disease. Nevertheless, the premise of narrative medicine, that being a close reader of texts can develop the ability to attend closely to patients, remains useful. When the sources used in narrative medicine are expanded to include those …
The Power Of Pandi: Multiplicity, Ambiguity, And Intimacy At A South Indian Temple, Julie Ann Edelstein
The Power Of Pandi: Multiplicity, Ambiguity, And Intimacy At A South Indian Temple, Julie Ann Edelstein
Theses - ALL
This thesis is an ethnographic account of Pandi Koyil, a small temple located in the South Indian city of Madurai. The temple, its presiding deity Pandi Muneesvarar, and the devotees who worship there represent a diverse spectrum of narrative histories, ritual practices, and community identities. This thesis demonstrates how the multiplicity, ambiguity, and power of the deity Pandi fosters the multiple narratives, differentiated practices, and relationships of intimacy that surround him. First, this thesis presents the multiple origin stories people tell about the founding of Pandi Koyil and the mythological identity of its main deities, while also explaining the caste …

The Spirituality Of The Leader And Its Influence On Visitor Experience Management At Sacred Sites In The Island Of Ireland: Insights And Implications, Vreny Enongene, Kevin Griffin
Other resources
Despite growing interest in understanding the sacred site visitor experience management, scholars have predominantly explored the phenomenon from the visitor’s perspective. There is very little exploration from the managerial perspectives, given that decisions regarding the nature of the experience and product and service delivery strategies aimed at providing a diversity of visitors with rewarding, satisfying and memorable experiences solely depends on these individuals, whose personal attributes may play a fundamental role. In this case their spirituality, that may either implicitly or explicitly influence visitor experience management strategies and their implementations have not received attention in the religious and pilgrimage tourism …
