Creative Writing In Ministry Preparation: Narrativizing Formational Reflection, Benjamin Forrest, Marybeth Davis Baggett Apr 2017

Creative Writing In Ministry Preparation: Narrativizing Formational Reflection, Benjamin Forrest, Marybeth Davis Baggett

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper is part proposal and part example. Our proposal, in essence, is a challenge to faculty to consider the value of incorporating various forms of creative writing into the ministry classroom. Incorporating creative writing can serve as a means for equipping students in their own spiritual transformation through the practice of narrativizing formational reflection. Our theoretical framework for using creative writing as a pedagogical tool is built on metacognition as classroom practice, which challenges students toward reflection and internalization. Following our proposal, we provide two tangible examples of how this proposal has been implemented in a seminary-level classroom. The …

The First Thing Andrew Did' [John 1:41]: Readers As Witnesses In The Fourth Gospel, Mark L. Trump Apr 2017

The First Thing Andrew Did' [John 1:41]: Readers As Witnesses In The Fourth Gospel, Mark L. Trump

Dissertations (1934 -)

In 1996, Robert F. Kysar identified one of the leading issues that would form scholarly debate regarding the Fourth Gospel for decades to come: whether the Fourth Gospel is designed to strengthen and affirm the faith of those inside a Johannine community (a sectarian document/community) or to bring to faith those who were not yet part of that community (an evangelistic tract/missionary community). The sectarian position, often connected to the work of J. Louis Martyn, Raymond E. Brown, and Wayne A. Meeks, has become the received tradition in Johannine studies. Increasingly, others have called into question not only the results …

The Cry Of The Poor: Anthropology Of Suffering And Justice In Health Care From A Latin American Liberation Approach, Alexandre Andrade Martins Apr 2017

The Cry Of The Poor: Anthropology Of Suffering And Justice In Health Care From A Latin American Liberation Approach, Alexandre Andrade Martins

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation examines the connection between poverty and health inequalities from a liberation theological ethics perspective. It uses Simone Weil’s and Latin American liberation theology’s approaches to suffering and social justice as theoretical sources to address health inequalities and the suffering of the poor because of social injustice, vulnerability to diseases, and lack of healthcare assistance. First of all, these approaches are examined from how they shape an anthropology of suffering that enable us to understand the suffering of the poor and, at the same time, to recognize them as agents of their own liberation and struggle for justice in …

The Two Goats: A Christian Yom Kippur Soteriology, Richard Barry Apr 2017

The Two Goats: A Christian Yom Kippur Soteriology, Richard Barry

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation draws on recent historical-critical research into ancient Jewish temple theology, the priestly book of Leviticus, and especially the Yom Kippur liturgy of Leviticus 16, to develop a more paradoxical interpretation of Christ’s saving work for modern Christian systematic theology. Prompted by the pioneering research of Jacob Milgrom, there has been a surge in sympathetic interpretations of the priestly theological tradition, which has inspired fresh interpretations of the Levitical Day of Atonement. I argue that an adequate Christian theory of atonement must be attentive to both the overall “landscape” of Jewish biblical thought, and to the specific rhythm of …

The Great Plan Of Happiness: A Christ- Centered Visual Approach, Tyler J. Griffin

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

The greatest concept we can study or teach is the plan of redemption—sometimes called the plan of salvation or the plan of happiness. The doctrines of the plan of redemption have more power to bring men to God than any other truth or concept.

Functionality Of Radicalization: A Case Study Of Hizb Ut-Tahrir, Farhaan Wali Apr 2017

Functionality Of Radicalization: A Case Study Of Hizb Ut-Tahrir, Farhaan Wali

Journal of Strategic Security

Moving beyond the concern with causes of radicalization, this article explores the transformative aspect of radicalization within Hizb ut-Tahrir (The Liberation Party). The personal narratives obtained from this ethnographic fieldwork are placed into a frame of reference related to how radicalization occurs within Hizb ut-Tahrir. Gaining insight into this social phenomenon required an ‘ethnographic’ approach, which allowed me to study members of Hizb ut-Tahrir in their natural setting. My access to Hizb ut-Tahrir put me in the unique position of being able to gather the biographical information required to study radicalization. In essence, I sought to acquire, from within the …

“The Room Where It Happens”: Teaching Diversity In The Classroom, Debra Jenson

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Universities across the nation have focused increasingly on promoting diversity, to the point of including this goal in their mission statements. Additionally, millennial students come to college anxious to learn about diversity. This paper presents a lesson plan built around the musical Hamilton. The activity teaches public relations students in a writing class persuasion and rhetoric skills. It has a dual purpose of introducing diversity, the topic of privilege and its role in American culture.

The most beneficial course Andrea Thomas ’14 took at Gardner-Webb University was Honors Research and Thesis. Her project examined how sacred stories from Islam, Judaism and Christianity could be beneficial to the coping process for rape survivors of each respective tradition. “I loved being able to immerse myself in my project and create a paper from my own ideas,” she reflected.

Four Case Studies In Teaching Sermons At A Public University, Robert Ellison

English Faculty Research

In this paper, delivered at the March 2017 meeting of the Northeast Modern Language Association, I discuss my experience with teaching sermons at Marshall University, a public institution in Huntington, WV. I have done this in four classes over the past several years: “Good Essays” (a 200-level general-education course in the English Department); “God Talk” (another gen-ed course, team-taught with a faculty member in religious studies); “Sermon: Text and Performance” (a 400-level class in the Honors College); and “The Victorian Spoken Word” (a graduate seminar in English).

The audiences were very different, as were the texts we used (Newman, Spurgeon, …
