Influence Of Social Factors On Student Satisfaction Among College Students With Disabilities, Kathleen Marie Oertle, Allison R. Fleming, Anthony J. Plotner, Jonathan G. Hakun

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

A significant body of research on student retention reflects that social and environmental factors influence continued enrollment in post-secondary education and academic success. Yet, for students with disabilities, more emphasis is placed on accommodations, access, and support services without sufficient attention to the social aspect of the student experience. In this study, we investigated belonging as a primary contributor to student satisfaction and examined the degree to which other social factors modified this relationship among a sample of students with disabilities attending public, 4-year universities. A higher sense of belonging was associated with greater student satisfaction in our sample. Through …

Intersections Between Gender And Disability In A Clinical Setting: The Need For Clinicians’ Awareness Of The Gendered Effects Of Disability, Maria Medlyn Feb 2017

Intersections Between Gender And Disability In A Clinical Setting: The Need For Clinicians’ Awareness Of The Gendered Effects Of Disability, Maria Medlyn

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

While gender is a large topic in psychological research, little research investigates the intersection between gender and disability. This research is vital in psychology as gender strongly impacts an individual’s experience with disability and people with disabilities are at an increased risk for numerous mental disorders. Despite this need for clinician’s awareness of the gendered effects of disability, disability has been historically ignored in psychological research.

This literature review investigates common perspectives used to study disability including the medical model, feminist model, social model, and disabilities studies. Psychological research on disability demonstrates that men with disabilities commonly experience conflict between …

Psychology, Counseling Psychology, And Professional Counseling: Shared Roots, Challenges, And Opportunities, Peggy Brady‐Amoon, Kathleen Keefe-Cooperman Feb 2017

Psychology, Counseling Psychology, And Professional Counseling: Shared Roots, Challenges, And Opportunities, Peggy Brady‐Amoon, Kathleen Keefe-Cooperman

Faculty of Counseling & Development Publications

Psychology, counseling psychology, and professional counseling are at a crossroad. The growing movement to establish professional counseling as a distinct profession, based on an increasingly narrow definition of professional identity, is particularly relevant to counseling psychologists and professional counselors and has implications for the broader field of psychology. A brief systematic historical analysis of these professional specialties in the U.S. provides the context to examine current challenges, including proposed restriction of master’s level training, licensure or other authorization to practice, and employment to graduates of programs accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). …

Achieving The Promise Of Assistive Technology: Why Assistive Technology Evaluations Are Essential For Compliance With The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Alexandra Abend Feb 2017

Achieving The Promise Of Assistive Technology: Why Assistive Technology Evaluations Are Essential For Compliance With The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, Alexandra Abend

Cardozo Law Review

The note advocates for a more rigorous and proactive approach to incorporating assistive technology (AT) in special education, arguing that it is essential for ensuring students with disabilities receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It critiques the current legal standard established by Rowley as insufficient, calling for a higher threshold that prioritizes maximizing educational opportunities. The analysis emphasizes the importance of comprehensive AT evaluations and the need for systemic improvements to prevent procedural violations and ensure effective implementation of AT in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Counselor Supervisors' Perceptions Of The Importance Of Social Justice Competence In Novice Counselors, Elisabeth Bradley Simpson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores counselor supervisors’ perceptions of social justice competence (SJC) in novice counselors during the hiring process through the use of the Social Justice Competence Desirability Inventory (SJCDI). A total of 109 counselor supervisors completed the SJCDI, an instrument developed for the purpose of this study, and responses were evaluated through principal axis factoring. A series of one-way multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVAs) explored whether perceptions of the importance of SJC differed among demographic and professional characteristics. The results of this study show that counselor supervisors perceive empathy & self-awareness, social action, and the development of critical consciousness as …

Comparison Of General And High Probability Motor Sequence Attentional Cues For Increasing Vocabulary Identification In Students With Autism, Ashleigh G. Obst Jan 2017

Comparison Of General And High Probability Motor Sequence Attentional Cues For Increasing Vocabulary Identification In Students With Autism, Ashleigh G. Obst

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

The present study assessed if embedding high probability responding (high-p) into an attentional cue, versus a general attentional cue (GA), would result in students with moderate and severe disabilities displaying differential responding for grade level science vocabulary word identification. Using an adapted alternating treatments design, three students with autism spectrum disorder received an intervention involving a GA cue and one with a high-p to determine which is more efficient. Hypothesized results are that the attentional cue with a high-probability motor sequence would be more effective for teaching vocabulary word identification.

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Counselor Competencies In Working With Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Their Families, Katherine A. Feather

Theses and Dissertations

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a profound diagnosis that affects 1% of the world’s population (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC]; 2015a). Counselors can play a dynamic role in treating ASD and promoting greater life satisfaction; however, the counseling field has not identified how counselors develop their competencies working with children with ASD and their families. Therefore, the phenomenological investigation examined the experiences of 15 counselors in the field and their self-perceived competencies of treating ASD. A model of ASD counseling competencies development emerged from the data. Participants described the developmental components of Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies …

Effects Of A Coaching Intervention On Teacher’S Implementation Of Naturalistic Strategies To Promote Communication In Children, Kaitlin J. Dick Jan 2017

Effects Of A Coaching Intervention On Teacher’S Implementation Of Naturalistic Strategies To Promote Communication In Children, Kaitlin J. Dick

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

With accountability on the rise, educators are changing their focus to optimizing instructional strategies in the classroom. Their job performance depends upon their ability to show progress on child outcomes. One way teachers advance this process is by executing more evidence-based practices in their classroom. There is a lack of research in early childhood that report treatment integrity of the treatment package. This study utilized a multicomponent coaching intervention to increasing treatment fidelity of teacher implementation of naturalistic teaching strategies in an early childhood classroom. This coaching intervention could prove to be more efficient and practical for educators. This study …

The purpose of this study was to provide training to peer tutors in order to teach students with severe intellectual disability to initiate communication to obtain preferred objects. A multiple probe (days) across students was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the peer implementing a naturalistic time delay to teach the communication skill. Two of the four students were able to initiate communications with the peer tutors to use objects they preferred. One student showed increasing in responding prior to the implementation of the intervention. The results showed that the peers were able to maintain the instructional procedures to teach …

Increasing Self-Initiated Question Asking With Adults With Autism Using Pivotal Response Training Strategies And Constant Time Delay, John Colin Vogler Jan 2017

Increasing Self-Initiated Question Asking With Adults With Autism Using Pivotal Response Training Strategies And Constant Time Delay, John Colin Vogler

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

The purpose of this study was to implement pivotal response training (PRT) strategies paired with constant time delay (CTD) to teach an individual with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID) to self-initiate through question asking. A multiple probe across behaviors design was used to evaluate effectiveness of implementation. Results show that this naturalistic intervention is effective for some questions, while other questions need to be taught in more contrived scenarios.
