Quantifying The Burden Of Vampire Bat Rabies In Peruvian Livestock, Julio A. Benavides, Elizabeth Rojas Paniagua, Katie Hampson Dec 2017

Quantifying The Burden Of Vampire Bat Rabies In Peruvian Livestock, Julio A. Benavides, Elizabeth Rojas Paniagua, Katie Hampson

KIP Articles

Background: Knowledge of infectious disease burden is necessary to appropriately allocate resources for prevention and control. In Latin America, rabies is among the most important zoonoses for human health and agriculture, but the burden of disease attributed to its main reservoir, the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus), remains uncertain. Methodology/Principal findings: We used questionnaires to quantify under-reporting of livestock deaths across 40 agricultural communities with differing access to health resources and epidemiological histories of vampire bat rabies (VBR) in the regions of Apurimac, Ayacucho and Cusco in southern Peru. Farmers who believed VBR was absent from their communities were one …

The Risk Of An Anti-Consumer Cfpb, Christopher L. Peterson Dec 2017

The Risk Of An Anti-Consumer Cfpb, Christopher L. Peterson

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

The risks of an anti-consumer CFPB go beyond just those cases currently under investigation. America has a massive financial sector that is constantly evolving and reinventing itself. This striving for innovation and efficiency is, of course, one of the American financial system’s great advantages. Nevertheless, the Sun-Tzu-worshipping, MBA-wielding financiers that use boilerplate consumer credit contracts as weapons in their endless market-share battles are paying attention to what the agency is doing—and more importantly, to what it is not doing. A chilled CFPB law enforcement program will embolden the consumer finance industry to roll out more misleading advertising, more deceptive sales …

Integrating Abc And Eva To Evaluate Investment Decisions, Chiadamrong N. Dec 2017

Integrating Abc And Eva To Evaluate Investment Decisions, Chiadamrong N.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

The significance of investment is transparent in the world of competitive business. Traditional costing systems in which their emphasizes are for short term savings rather than long term benefits have shown some lacking in providing accurate and reliable cost data for the investment decisions. Activity-based Costing (ABC), which is developed to satisfy some of the weaknesses of the traditional costing systems, can provide valuable insights into the operating processes and come up with more accurate cost data. In this paper, ABC is used to provide significant information for investment decisions. Although, the ABC method provides accurate operating product costs, it …

Applying A Mindfulness Practice To Qualitative Data Collection, Laura Lemon Dec 2017

Applying A Mindfulness Practice To Qualitative Data Collection, Laura Lemon

The Qualitative Report

Mindfulness, or paying attention on purpose in the present moment, can serve as a tool for qualitative researchers as they navigate the research setting and data collection. In this article, I provide an overview of mindfulness and suggest ways to incorporate mindfulness as a data collection tool. To demonstrate how to apply mindfulness to qualitative research, I share my personal experience in incorporating a mindfulness practice into data collection as part of a phenomenological study and what I learned in the process. In doing so, I offer an actual practice that researchers can incorporate into the research process as a …

A Grounded Theory Study Of Nurses Who Care For Patients Who Are Victims Of Sexual Violence, Dara M. Whalen Dec 2017

A Grounded Theory Study Of Nurses Who Care For Patients Who Are Victims Of Sexual Violence, Dara M. Whalen

Dissertations

Sexual violence is a widespread traumatic event that has physical, psychological, financial, and spiritual implications for victims, their friends and family, and the community. The negative and long-term effects include poor health outcomes, depression, substance abuse disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Many nurses who treat these patients are inadequately trained.

The treatment of nurses towards patients who are victims of sexual violence can mitigate or contribute to perceived revictimization of patients. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify the processes and uncover the attitudes and behaviors of nurses without specialized training who care for patients who are victims …

The Parents’ Values Of Early Childhood Education And Care In Russia: Discovering The Dimensions Via Coding And Category Clustering, Olga Savinskaya Dec 2017

The Parents’ Values Of Early Childhood Education And Care In Russia: Discovering The Dimensions Via Coding And Category Clustering, Olga Savinskaya

The Qualitative Report

In this study I explore parents’ perceptions of kindergarten as a social institution for the provision of early childhood education and care (ECEC). Global reforms of this important part of the welfare state are a starting point for the research. Redefining welfare ideology and minimizing the social burden on the state leads to the public and scientific debate about the value of early childhood education and its role in investing in human development. In-depth interviews with 30 mothers were analyzed by coding and category clustering. The results show that parents understand the service provided by a kindergarten as complex, aimed …

Factors Influencing The Case Selection Of Irs Special Agents, Robert A. Warren Dec 2017

Factors Influencing The Case Selection Of Irs Special Agents, Robert A. Warren

Student Scholarship

This study examines how Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation (CI) Special Agents select cases to investigate during a period of stagnant budgets and significant personnel attrition. Semi-structured interviews (N=30) of current and retired agents and supervisors, along with information gleaned from published reports and through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, suggests that special agents did not believe that the 13% reduction of IRS-CI's appropriated funding from 2010 to 2016 impeded their ability to select and investigate the best tax and money laundering cases, even though the funding gap resulted in a 19% reduction in special agents. However, the data also …

Anthropometric Multicompartmental Model To Predict Body Composition In Brazilian Girls, Dalmo Machado, Analiza Silva, Luis Gobbo, Paula Elias, Francisco J.A. De Paula, Nilo Ramos Dec 2017

Anthropometric Multicompartmental Model To Predict Body Composition In Brazilian Girls, Dalmo Machado, Analiza Silva, Luis Gobbo, Paula Elias, Francisco J.A. De Paula, Nilo Ramos

Teacher Education

Background: Anthropometric models remain appropriate alternatives to estimate body composition of peripubertal populations. However, these traditional models do not consider other body components that undergo major changes during peripubertal growth spurt, with restrictions to a multicompartimental approach as a quantitative growth. DXA has great potential to determine pediatric body composition in more than one component (3-C), but has limited use in field settings. Thus, the aim of this study was to propose and validate an anthropometric model for simultaneous estimation of lean soft tissue (LST), bone mineral content (BMC) and fat mass (FM) in healthy girls, from a multivariate approach …

Classifying Cancer Genome Aberrations By Their Mutually Exclusive Effects On Transcription, Jonathan B. Dayton, Stephen R. Piccolo Dec 2017

Classifying Cancer Genome Aberrations By Their Mutually Exclusive Effects On Transcription, Jonathan B. Dayton, Stephen R. Piccolo

Faculty Publications

Background

Malignant tumors are typically caused by a conglomeration of genomic aberrations—including point mutations, small insertions, small deletions, and large copy-number variations. In some cases, specific chemotherapies and targeted drug treatments are effective against tumors that harbor certain genomic aberrations. However, predictive aberrations (biomarkers) have not been identified for many tumor types and treatments. One way to address this problem is to examine the downstream, transcriptional effects of genomic aberrations and to identify characteristic patterns. Even though two tumors harbor different genomic aberrations, the transcriptional effects of those aberrations may be similar. These patterns could be used to inform treatment …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Pathological high-frequency oscillations are a novel marker used to improve the delineation of epileptogenic tissue and, hence, the outcome of epilepsy surgery. Their practical clinical utilization is curtailed by the inability to discriminate them from physiological oscillations due to frequency overlap. Although it is well documented that pathological HFOs are suppressed by antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), the effect of AEDs on normal HFOs is not well known. In this experimental study, we have explored whether physiological HFOs (sharp-wave ripples) of hippocampal origin respond to AED treatment. The results show that application of a single dose of levetiracetam or lacosamide does not …

Factors Associated With Junior Doctors' Decisions To Apply For General Practice Training Programmes In The Uk: Secondary Analysis Of Data From The Ukmed Project, Thomas C.E. Gale, Paul J. Lambe, Martin J. Roberts

Peninsula Medical School

Background The UK, like many high-income countries, is experiencing a worsening shortfall of general practitioners (GPs) alongside an increasing demand for their services. At the same time, factors influencing junior doctors’ decisions to apply for GP training are only partially understood and research in this area has been hampered by the difficulties in connecting the datasets that map the journey from student to qualified GP. The UK Medical Education Database (UKMED) has been established to ameliorate this problem by linking institutional data across the spectrum of medical education from school to specialty training. Our study aimed to use UKMED to …
