Changes In The Utilization Of Osteoporosis Drugs After The 2010 Fda Bisphosphonate Drug Safety Communication, Bander Balkhi, Enrique Seoane-Vazquez, Rosa Rodriguez-Monguio

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Introduction

In October 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety communication regarding the risks of atypical fractures of the femur, with bisphosphonates drugs. This study evaluated the impact of the bisphosphonates FDA safety communication on the utilization of osteoporosis medications in Medicaid programs.

Methods

Osteoporosis drugs utilization data from the July 2006 to June 2014 were extracted from the national Summary Files from the Medicaid State Drug Utilization Data maintained by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). We performed an interrupted time series analyses to evaluate trends in utilization of osteoporosis drugs before and …

Past Observable Dynamics Of A Continuously Monitored Qubit, Luis Pedro García-Pinto, Justin Dressel Dec 2017

Past Observable Dynamics Of A Continuously Monitored Qubit, Luis Pedro García-Pinto, Justin Dressel

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Monitoring a quantum observable continuously in time produces a stochastic measurement record that noisily tracks the observable. For a classical process, such noise may be reduced to recover an average signal by minimizing the mean squared error between the noisy record and a smooth dynamical estimate. We show that for a monitored qubit, this usual procedure returns unusual results. While the record seems centered on the expectation value of the observable during causal generation, examining the collected past record reveals that it better approximates a moving-mean Gaussian stochastic process centered at a distinct (smoothed) observable estimate. We show that this …

Exploring The Determinants Of Vulnerable Road Users' Crash Severity In State Roads, Àlvaro Alfonso Caviedes Cómbita Dec 2017

Exploring The Determinants Of Vulnerable Road Users' Crash Severity In State Roads, Àlvaro Alfonso Caviedes Cómbita

Dissertations and Theses

Pedestrians and bicyclists are the most vulnerable road users and suffer the most severe consequences when crashes take place. An extensive literature is available for crash severity in terms of driver safety, but fewer studies have explored non-motorized users' crash severity. Furthermore, most research efforts have examined pedestrian and bicyclist crash severity in urban areas. This study focuses on state roads (mostly outside major urban areas) and aims to identify contributing risk factors of fatal and severe crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists in state roads. Two ordinal regression models were developed (one for pedestrian and the other for bicyclist crashes) …

Making Sense With Manipulatives: Developing Mathematical Experiences For Early Childhood Teachers, Cara E. Furman Dec 2017

Making Sense With Manipulatives: Developing Mathematical Experiences For Early Childhood Teachers, Cara E. Furman

Education and Culture

This paper is premised on the fact that math can be an important tool in helping people make sense of the world. Math offers a unique and particular lens, helping people to focus on a range of characteristics from shape and amount to the relationship between the general and the particular. To promote math as a tool for making sense, early childhood math instruction ought to teach it in a manner that helps children make sense of mathematical concepts.

Specifically, I argue here that manipulatives are often brought into the early childhood classroom to promote “hands-on” learning without facilitating making …

The Mindfulness Practice, Aesthetic Experience, And Creative Democracy, Kyle A. Greenwalt, Cuong H. Nguyen Dec 2017

The Mindfulness Practice, Aesthetic Experience, And Creative Democracy, Kyle A. Greenwalt, Cuong H. Nguyen

Education and Culture

In this paper, we explore the degree to which the Buddhist mindfulness practice and the habits of democratic citizenship can be reconstructed in light of each other. We ask what mindfulness is, seeking to first understand it in its Buddhist context. Then we turn to the work of John Dewey in order to seek possibilities for mutual reconstruction. Finally, we ask how we can reconcile mindful acceptance of the present with the ameliorative habits of the democratic citizen—and what this might mean for a reconstructed progressive education practice.

Domain Restricted Secure Podcasts, Dustin Beutin Dec 2017

Domain Restricted Secure Podcasts, Dustin Beutin

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques to securely provide access to audio files across desktop and mobile devices. The audio files, e.g., audio recordings that are part of a podcast, are converted to multimedia files of similar filesize. The converted files, which can optionally include a graphic related to the audio, are uploaded to secure, view-only cloud storage and configured for access by selected users, e.g., users within a particular domain. Access to the files is provided by a widget that can enable users to play the audio via any desktop or mobile device that can access the cloud storage service.

Consistent Hashing For Generating Protobuf Field Numbers, Tomasz Madejski, Rob Shakir Dec 2017

Consistent Hashing For Generating Protobuf Field Numbers, Tomasz Madejski, Rob Shakir

Defensive Publications Series

To convert a YANG-based model into a protobuf format, a unique field identification numbers needs to be assigned to each node in the YANG schema tree. Field identification numbers can be generated by calculating a numeric hash of characteristics of the YANG schema node; for example, its identifier or schema tree path. The resulting hash values provide backwards compatible field identification numbers suitable for protobuf field numbers.
