Policy Essay: Fostering The Acceptance And Inclusion Of Lgbtq Youth In The Child Welfare System: Considerations For Advancing Trauma Informed Responses For Lgbtq Youth In Care, Adam Mccormick, Karey Scheyd, Samuel Terrazas
Journal of Family Strengths
LGBTQ youth are vulnerable to nearly all forms of childhood maltreatment and trauma and are disproportionately overrepresented in the child welfare system. Many LGBTQ youth in the child welfare system encounter a number of obstacles related to discrimination, rejection, placement instability, and further maltreatment. Despite recent insights and advances in the field of trauma informed care the trauma experiences of LGBTQ youth have largely gone unaddressed in major works and frameworks related to trauma informed care. The following article explores the unique trauma and maltreatment experiences of LGBTQ youth and provides considerations for enhancing and improving practice with LGBTQ youth …

A Moral Debate At The Invisible Rainbow: Thoughts About Best Practices In Servicing Lgbtq Students In Special Education, Bernardo E. Pohl Jr, Matthew Fugate, John Kelly
Journal of Family Strengths
Instead of occupying a marginal space within teacher preparation programs, special education courses and training should promote diversity in servicing marginalized groups such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students. Within these programs, issues related to LGBTQ students should occupy a meaningful and formative space in the training of future teachers in special education. Often, special education teachers are at a loss about how to educate LGBTQ students with disabilities. Rethinking the role of special education and LGBTQ students with special needs within teacher education programs enables pre-service teachers to cultivate new values and attitudes that can enrich …
Depression: The Often Overlooked Sequela Of Head Trauma, Samuel D. Hodge Jr., Jack E. Hubbard
Depression: The Often Overlooked Sequela Of Head Trauma, Samuel D. Hodge Jr., Jack E. Hubbard
Cleveland State Law Review
Depression is a common sequela of head trauma. Approximately half of all individuals with a cranial injury will experience depression within the first year, regardless of the severity of the injury. The ailment is characterized clinically as a mood disorder, often associated with intense feelings of sadness. However, depression is more complex than mood disorders, as many mental and bodily complaints—such as insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, appetite changes, aches and pains, and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities—are associated with depression. These intense feelings, particularly when combined with despair and hopelessness, can lead to suicide, a dreaded potential complication of …
Stuck In Ohio's Legal Limbo, How Many Mistrials Are Too Many Mistrials?: Exploring New Factors That Help A Trial Judge In Ohio Know Whether To Exercise Her Authority To Dismiss An Indictment With Prejudice, Especially Following Repeated Hung Juries, Samantha M. Cira
Cleveland State Law Review
Multiple mistrials following validly-prosecuted trials are becoming an increasingly harsh reality in today’s criminal justice system. Currently, the Ohio Supreme Court has not provided any guidelines to help its trial judges know when to make the crucial decision to dismiss an indictment with prejudice following a string of properly-declared mistrials, especially due to repeated hung juries. Despite multiple mistrials that continue to result in no conviction, criminal defendants often languish behind bars, suffering detrimental psychological harm and a loss of personal freedom as they remain in “legal limbo” waiting to retry their case. Furthermore, continuously retrying defendants cuts against fundamental …

Theses
Shiftwork is a major feature of working life in today’s world. Increasing the workday length is a new trend in alternative work schedules. The features of a shift system operation can have an impact on sleep, alertness, and the well-being of shift workers. The objective of this study is to evaluate security and protective services employees working in non-rotating shift systems of 8- hour and 12-hour schedules. New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Public Safety Department staff was studied to examine how non-rotating shift schedules affect sleep, alertness, and wellness under five different work schedules.

Asylum Seekers In A Non-Immigrant State And The Absence Of Regional Asylum Seekers Mechanism: A Case Study Of Rohingya Asylum Seekers In Aceh-Indonesia And Asean Response, Bilal Dewansyah, Wicaksana Dramanda, Imam Mulyana
Indonesia Law Review
The problem of asylum seekers has become a global humanitarian issue. Demands regarding the handling mechanisms based on the values of human rights is getting stronger voiced by the international community. In the Southeast Asian region, the number of ethnic Rohingya asylum seekers has increased and has started to demand settlement in non-immigrant countries like Indonesia. Although Indonesia does not have international obligations in handling asylum seekers, constitutionally, Indonesia has an obligation to guarantee the right of everyone to obtain asylum which has been included in the Constitution. In a global perspective, humanitarian issues in the handling of asylum seekers …

Reflections On The Crisis Of Comparative Literature In The Contemporary West, Zhoukun Han, Quan Wen
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their Article "Reflections on the Crisis of Comparative Literature in the Contemporary West" Zhoukun Han and Wen Quan review the challenges met during the evolution of comparative literature as a discipline between the turn of nineteenth century and 1958. They maintain that comparative literature in the contemporary West is indeed experiencing a crisis, explicate the reasons for this. Apart from the pursuit of sameness inherent in conventional comparative studies and the position of western-centrism, the shift from literary comparison to cultural study has exacerbated the crisis. In view of this situation, some western scholars call for a return to …
Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In China From The Perspective Of Medio-Translatology, Wei Guo
Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In China From The Perspective Of Medio-Translatology, Wei Guo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Rebirth of Comparative Literature in China from the Perspective of Medio-translatology," Wei Guo discusses the "rebirth" of Comparative Literature in China from the development of medio-translatology. He argues that, though translation has received wide attention in Comparative Literature, both domestic and foreign, especially in today's globalized world, the proposition of medio-translatology and systematic investigation by Xie Tianzhen and other Chinese scholars constitute an important way forward for translation in Comparative Literature. It makes translation an independent branch in this discipline, which is conducive to ending the longstanding confusions in translation under medio-translatology and translation studies on the …

Another Argument On The "Crisis Said" Of Comparative Literature, Ping Du
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Another Argument on the 'Crisis Said' of Comparative Literature" Ping Du discusses "Crisis Said", the long-lasting topic since the birth of Comparative Literature. She argues that after every crisis comes an opportunity of a new development of Comparative Literature. Du claims that comparative literature is experiencing a rebirth in the Age of Multiculturalism. She, firstly, reviews the first wave of "Crisis Said", its solution and the progress of Comparative Literature, then she analyses the prevailing second wave of "Crisis Said" or even "Death Said", and finally points out that the way-out is not merely world literature but …

The Theoretical Basis And Framework Of Variation Theory, Shunqing Cao, Zhoukun Han
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "The Theoretical Basis and Framework of Variation Theory" Shunqing Cao and Zhoukun Han re-examine the conclusions on variation theory drawn from Cao's The Variation Theory of Comparative Literature. Drawing on the past three decades of Chinese comparatist practice, the proposal of variation theory in that book is a scientific endeavor from China. China's comparative literature has sustained a focus on comparison of literatures Eastern and Western. And Chinese scholars have long been aware of the heterogeneity of civilizations and the variability in literature exchanges. By demonstrating uses and potentials of variation theory, this thesis attempts to …
Examining Attentional Control And Processing Speed Deficits As Underlying Mechanisms Of Neuropsychological Impairment In Schizophrenia, Mayte Forte
Graduate Masters Theses
Neuropsychological impairment is a key characteristic of schizophrenia (SZ), but its cognitive profile and underlying information processing mechanisms are not yet well understood. We compare patterns of neuropsychological functioning in 85 persons with SZ and 76 healthy controls across measures of intelligence, memory, and executive function. We then test the hypothesis that neuropsychological impairment in SZ is related to dual deficits in two related but distinct information processes: processing speed and attentional control. All research participants completed Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III), Wechsler Memory Scale Third Edition (WMS-III), and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), all of which provided measures …

Observing The Experience Of Racism Through Social Background, Leïla J. Dieye
Graduate Masters Theses
This study explores racism through the eyes of the one that experiences it. If different types of racism have already been established, the initial premise of the study is that some factors make its experience unique, such as one individual’s markers of identity and his history.
Data have been collected from in-depth interviews with ten participants belonging to five ethnic groups (Latino, African American, Asian, African and Middle Eastern). Those participants were asked to reflect on a specific moment when they witnessed racism, and on why it made them think that event in particular was racist. Then, they were asked …

Whether Or Not 'It Gets Better'…Coping With Parental Heterosexist Rejection, Cara Herbitter
Graduate Masters Theses
Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people face the burden of additional stressors as a result of their experiences of stigma and discrimination regarding their sexual minority status. Parental rejection of LGB people in the context of heterosexism serves as a powerful minority stressor associated with poorer mental health (e.g., Bouris et al., 2010; Ryan, Huebner, Diaz, & Sanchez, 2009). Few contemporary theories exist to describe the experience of parental rejection. In addition, the extant empirical research has focused primarily on youth experiences among White and urban LGB samples, signaling the need for research across the lifespan investigating more diverse samples. …

Project-Based Learning In Higher Education In The Uae: A Case Study Of Arab Students In Emirati Studies, Noorah Mohammed
All Works
Educational institutions in the Middle East are often criticized for using outdated teaching strategies such as lecturing that promote rote learning and memorization skills rather than life skills such as critical thinking, creativity and innovation which are important for students’ education and their future careers. This applied research paper presents an example of using Project-Based Learning (PBL) in Higher Education as a supplement to traditional lecturing and the benefits of using this approach for teaching and learning. A group of 62 female Arab students studying Emirati Studies at a federal higher institution in the UAE were involved in this classroom-based …

Intergenerational Financial Exchange And Cognitive Well-Being Among Older Adults In China, Ping Xu
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Although cognitive loss is part of normal aging, it has unfavorable consequences for older individuals, their family, as well as society. The prevalence of mild cognition impairment is expected to go up in China. How to maintain normal cognition for a longer period of time and to delay impair process is an emerging concern for older Chinese adults. Unlike Western countries, China lacks of formal support system. Intergenerational support between older parents and adult children is a predominant resource when they are in need. The Role Of Economic Efficiency In Competition Law, Zbigniew Jurczyk
The Role Of Economic Efficiency In Competition Law, Zbigniew Jurczyk
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
The main focus of the paper is the function of economics in the current application of competition law. While advocating further economization of the law, it is seen as necessary to widen the extent to which aspects of economic efficiency encompassing static and dynamic efficiency are taken into consideration in an antitrust analysis. Much attention is devoted to these issues, while clarifying what is meant by them, how they are to be understood and implemented in the practice of antitrust authorities, as well as discussing their importance for the promotion of innovation. It is noted that accounting for the economic …

Problem-Based Variations In Teaching Stephen Dobyns's 'Kansas' In China, Tao Zou
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Problem-based Variations in Teaching Stephen Dobyns's 'Kansas' in China" Tao Zou and Hong Zeng discuss the multiple variations in their experience of teaching foreign literature in China, with the teaching of Stephen Dobyns's short story "Kansas" as an example and the positive results of their approach. Variations in a broad sense occur with the differences in the choice of literary text, translation, interpretation, and canonization. All these variations can be used to reflect on and resolve major current issues in teaching foreign literature, and to stage cross-cultural communication and creativity through foreign literature pedagogy.

The Significance Of The Variation Theory In Cross-Cultural Communication, Yi Wan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "The Significance of the Variation Theory in Cross-Cultural Communication" Yi Wan analyzes some problems that East-West Comparative Literature, as a discipline, has encountered and discusses the significance of the development of the Variation Theory, proposed by Shunqing Cao. The author aims to explore two important points of this new platform, namely, heterogeneity and variation, and compares this new perspective to the French School, which is based on "influences" and the American School which is based on "analogies." By investigating the variations of literary texts or theories during the course of cross-civilization communication from the perspectives of imagology …

Gaze-Contingent Displays For Interactive Text Enhancement, Divya Bajaj
Graduate Masters Theses
Eye trackers are used for measuring a person’s eye movements, for example, while reading text on a screen. This information can be used by scientists to study the human visual system during object recognition or text comprehension. Moreover, engineers can build gaze-controlled interfaces that trigger a variety of actions when the user looks at pre-specified icons on a screen. In my research, I studied how gaze-contingent displays can be used to enhance the information that is provided by texts. First, I implemented a simple scripting language that allows even users without programming experience to set up gaze-contingent text displays. The …

A number of factors affects the effectiveness of whistleblowing system, such as the whistleblower, the wrongdoer, and other relevant parties. However, whistleblowing literature, so far, seems to attend more on whistleblowers’ perspectives. Little is known about aspects from recipient perspectives, especially the effect of psychological biases that can seriously damage the effectiveness of the system. This study extend the whistleblowing literature by experimentally investigating how the fraud type and anonymity influence the recipient decision making process. The results show that internal auditor (as recipient) has lower probability to respond to fraudulent earning management allegation than to that of asset misappropriation. …

Academic dishonesty among students has been recognised as a major concern in higher education in Indonesia. Accounting research arguably need to give more attention to this issue. This is partly because of the importance of integrity as part of accounting ethics and professionalism. However, little currently known about academic dishonesty among accounting students in Indonesia. We address this issue by surveying 342 accounting students about their perception of academic dishonesty and what motivates such behaviour. Our respondents were from all first, second or third year undergraduate students at one state university in Indonesia. Drawing from Theory of Planned Behaviour, we …
