“Damp In Bathroom. Damp In Back Room. It's Very Depressing!” Exploring The Relationship Between Perceived Housing Problems, Energy Affordability Concerns, And Health And Well-Being In Uk Social Housing, Gt Boomsma, S Pahl, Rv Jones, A Fuertes Jan 2017

“Damp In Bathroom. Damp In Back Room. It's Very Depressing!” Exploring The Relationship Between Perceived Housing Problems, Energy Affordability Concerns, And Health And Well-Being In Uk Social Housing, Gt Boomsma, S Pahl, Rv Jones, A Fuertes

School of Psychology

Social housing residents often struggle with achieving adequate levels of warmth in their home on a limited household budget. Additionally, other housing problems such as damp are common. Previous research has found a link between housing problems and poor health and reduced well-being, but this relationship is complex and poorly understood. A survey among UK social housing residents (N=536) investigated the association between cold and damp housing, as well as the role of energy affordability concerns in the relationship between housing problems and health. The findings indicated that struggles with keeping warm related to a cluster of damp and mould …

IntroductionPeople who are homeless often experience poor hospital discharge arrangements, reflecting ongoing care and housing needs. Specialist integrated homeless health and care provision (SIHHC) schemes have been developed and implemented to facilitate the safe and timely discharge of homeless patients from hospital. Our study aims to investigate the health outcomes of patients who were homeless and seen by a selection of SIHHC services. Methods and analysisOur study will employ a historical population-based cohort in England. We will examine health outcomes among three groups of adults: (1) homeless patients seen by specialist discharge schemes during their hospital admission; (2) homeless patients not …

Internet Risks For Children: Parents' Perceptions And Attitudes: An Investigative Study Of The Saudi Context, Norah Alqahtani, Steven Furnell, Shirley Atkinson, Ingo Stengel Jan 2017

Internet Risks For Children: Parents' Perceptions And Attitudes: An Investigative Study Of The Saudi Context, Norah Alqahtani, Steven Furnell, Shirley Atkinson, Ingo Stengel

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Internet has become a part of our children's daily activities at home and at school. The benefits of the Internet for children are huge and include education and entertainment. However, the same technologies also pose some risks that parents need to identify and guard against. A lack of awareness can cause children to encounter serious danger and become victims of Internet criminals. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no previous research has been conducted in Saudi Arabia on parent's awareness of the risks of Internet use to their children and how Saudi's parents seek to mitigate those risks. This …

Security Education And Awareness: Just Let Them Burn?, S Furnell, I Vasileiou

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

© 2017 Elsevier Ltd It is now readily recognised that cyber-security is not just a technical issue, with many breaches highlighting insufficient attention towards human aspects. One of the fundamental reasons for this is that people are not naturally equipped with the skills, instincts and behaviours required to ensure appropriate protection and so need support in order to help them understand what they should be doing and learn how to do it. However, looking at the evidence from surveys over the years, it becomes clear that security awareness, training and education often hold the curious distinction of being overlooked as …

BackgroundDepression and debt are common in the UK. Debt Counselling for Depression in Primary Care: an adaptive randomised controlled pilot trial (DeCoDer) aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the addition of a primary care debt counselling advice service to usual care for patients with depression and debt. However, the study was terminated early during the internal pilot trial phase because of recruitment delays. This report describes the rationale, methods and findings of the pilot study, and implications for future research.ObjectivesThe overarching aim of the internal pilot was to identify and resolve problems, thereby assessing the feasibility of …

Social Geology — Integrating Sustainability Concepts Into Earth Sciences, Iain S. Stewart, Joel C. Gill Jan 2017

Social Geology — Integrating Sustainability Concepts Into Earth Sciences, Iain S. Stewart, Joel C. Gill

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Most geologists would argue that geoscientific knowledge, experience, and guidance is critical for addressing many of society's most acute environmental challenges, yet few geologists are directly engaged in current discourses around sustainable development. That is surprising given that several attributes make modern geoscience well placed to make critical contributions to contemporary sustainability thinking. Here, we argue that if geoscientists are to make our know-how relevant to sustainability science, two aspects seem clear. Firstly, the geoscience community needs to substantially broaden its constituency, not only forging interdisciplinary links with other environmental disciplines but also drawing from the human and behavioral sciences. …

In the United States, the legal context plays a major role in how industrial/organizational (I/O) psychologists approach selection system development. The set of protected groups, the approaches to making an a priori case of discrimination (e.g., differential treatment vs. adverse impact), the key court cases influencing selection, and the prohibitions against preferential treatment (e.g., the 1991 ban on score adjustment or within-group norming) are well known. Selection texts (e.g., Guion, 1998) and human resource management texts (e.g., Cascio & Aguinis, 2008) give prominent treatment to the legal context. In recent years, there has been a growing internationalization of I/O psychology …

Organizational Image/Reputation, Filip Lievens Jan 2017

Organizational Image/Reputation, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Organizational image refers to people’s global impressions of an organization and is defined as people’s loose structures of knowledge and beliefs about an organization. Organizational image represents the net cognitive reactions and associations of customers, investors, employees, and applicants to an organization’s name. Accordingly, it serves as a template to categorize, store, and recall organization-related information.

How Future Work Selves Guide Feedback Seeking And Feedback Responding At Work, Frederik Anseel, Karoline Strauss, Filip Lievens Jan 2017

How Future Work Selves Guide Feedback Seeking And Feedback Responding At Work, Frederik Anseel, Karoline Strauss, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Providing feedback is one of the most widely accepted psychological interventions for learning and development. The belief that giving feedback to employees is beneficial for individual and organizational performance is also strongly held in organizations. Therefore, providing feedback to employees lies at the heart of a wide range of often costly and time-intensive performance management tools in organizations. However, contrary to these beliefs, meta-analytic evidence shows that feedback interventions do not produce unequivocal positive effects on performance (Kluger & DeNisi, 1996).

A Journey Towards Conscientisation: Motives Of Volunteers Who Support Asylum Seekers, Refugees And Detainees, Sarah Koelsch Jan 2017

A Journey Towards Conscientisation: Motives Of Volunteers Who Support Asylum Seekers, Refugees And Detainees, Sarah Koelsch

Theses

The focus of this case study is an examination of the factors that motivate people to engage in volunteerism working with asylum seekers. In the research project, volunteering is understood as a civic responsibility of an active member of society which involves social interactions that foster social inclusion: active citizenship. The co-researcher agency of this project is the Perth based Centre for Asylum seekers, Refugees and Detainees (CARAD). The project aim is to investigate the values, belief systems, and attitudes of CARAD’s volunteers. This informed the decision to employ a social constructionist approach and is intended to enable further understanding …

Exploring The Concept Of Receptivity To Bereavement Support: Implications For Palliative Care Services In Rural, Regional And Remote Western Australia, Pippa Blackburn Jan 2017

Exploring The Concept Of Receptivity To Bereavement Support: Implications For Palliative Care Services In Rural, Regional And Remote Western Australia, Pippa Blackburn

Theses

Background: Palliative care services are primary organisations that provide bereavement support in Australia and aim to mitigate potential adverse outcomes of grief and bereavement The success of bereavement services depends, in part, on how ‘receptive’ the bereaved are to receiving support. Although palliative care services provide support services for bereaved carers and families, there still remains a discord between what is delivered, what is needed and factors that deter or encourage a person’s receptiveness to support.

Purpose: The aim of this research was to examine utilisation of bereavement support through the ‘lens’ of receptivity. Bereavement and receptivity are complex multifactorial …

Bioimpedance Spectroscopy - Can It Be Used As A Tool For Monitoring Fluid Shifts In Burns?, Pippa Kenworthy Jan 2017

Bioimpedance Spectroscopy - Can It Be Used As A Tool For Monitoring Fluid Shifts In Burns?, Pippa Kenworthy

Theses

Large fluid shifts and oedema are features of burn injuries. Oedema hampers burn wound healing and is directly related to the size and depth of the burn. The degree of oedema in burns covers a broad spectrum: Minor burns cause localised or peripheral oedema, whilst major burns may result in a systemic inflammatory response which can be life threatening and necessitates formal fluid resuscitation. Acute burn fluid resuscitation is paramount in decreasing patient morbidity and mortality but can contribute to already large amounts of oedema. There is currently no single clinically applicable, non-invasive and accurate outcome measure to titrate fluid …

Singing Exile: Music In Irish Emigration Literature, Christopher Mccann Jan 2017

Singing Exile: Music In Irish Emigration Literature, Christopher Mccann

Theses

Ireland possesses a cultural heritage that is particularly literary and musical. The island is also renowned for its extensive and ongoing history of emigration, and imagery of exile and return is as intrinsic to conceptions of Irishness as the island’s artistic lineage. The impact on the creation of a modern Irish identity by exilic Irish writers and musicians is testament to this relationship.

The act of emigration can be conceived as a narrative of individual identity framed by a wider cultural discourse. It is therefore natural that the themes of exile and departure are a frequent presence in Irish art, …

The Modification Of Two Tools To Measure Emotional Intelligence In Undergraduate Student Nurses: A Mixed Method Pilot Study, Laurel Collin Jan 2017

The Modification Of Two Tools To Measure Emotional Intelligence In Undergraduate Student Nurses: A Mixed Method Pilot Study, Laurel Collin

Theses

Nurses need a range of strategies to manage their clinical practice while helping patients to cope with their health problems. Stress and inefficient coping skills of student nurses have been shown to lead to attrition within the university and later, on graduation, in the workplace. Student nurses can learn some of these strategies as they are expected to cope with issues associated with the practical nature of nursing, university demands and home life. One strategy offered is the use of emotional intelligence (EI). An ability to monitor and regulate emotions may contribute to an increase in the repertoire of coping …

From The Garden Of Eden To The New Creation In Christ : A Theological Investigation Into The Significance And Function Of The Old Testament Imagery Of Eden Within The New Testament, James Cregan Jan 2017

From The Garden Of Eden To The New Creation In Christ : A Theological Investigation Into The Significance And Function Of The Old Testament Imagery Of Eden Within The New Testament, James Cregan

Theses

The thesis is intended as an analytical and critical introduction to a developing theology of Eden. It compares a range of Old Testament understandings pertaining to the imagery of the Garden of Eden, as the basis for a study of the appropriation, integration and transformation of Edenic imagery in the New Testament. It does so in the context of Christian theology which, for a variety reasons, has been generally subdued, if not ambivalent, in articulating the relationship between the imagery of Eden and the representation of the New Creation in Christ. The purpose of the thesis, then, is not just …

The Effectiveness Of Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Li-Cbt) On Reducing Symptoms Of Depression In Arab Clients, Safa Ali Bait Jameel Jan 2017

The Effectiveness Of Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Li-Cbt) On Reducing Symptoms Of Depression In Arab Clients, Safa Ali Bait Jameel

Theses

This study examines whether an awareness of LI-CBT skills would result into the reduction of symptoms of depression in Arab clients. The study exclusively applies two techniques, behavioral activation (BA) and cognitive restructuring (CR), to clients of varying levels of depression residing in the United Arab Emirates. Utilizing a pre-test-post-test design, 50 participants (25treatment and 25control) were included in the analyses of the study and level of depression was measured using the PHQ-9. Results indicate that 76 percent of participants in the treatment group showed improvement in their level of depression, when compared to 30.4 percent of participants in the …

Advancing The Scientific Understanding Of Trust In The Contexts Of Negotiations And Repeated Bargaining, Dejun Tony Kong, Robert B. Lount, Mara Olekalnsc, Donald L. Ferrin Jan 2017

Advancing The Scientific Understanding Of Trust In The Contexts Of Negotiations And Repeated Bargaining, Dejun Tony Kong, Robert B. Lount, Mara Olekalnsc, Donald L. Ferrin

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

More than half a century ago, Deutsch (1949, 1958) recognised the critical role that trust plays in negotiations and related forms of social interactions. Despite this very early recognition, and rapidly expanding research on trust in several fields, only in recent decades have negotiation researchers begun a systematic exploration of trust in the contexts of negotiations and repeated bargaining. In the last two decades, researchers have increasingly focused their attention on the role of trust in negotiations.
