Recreation In The Brazilian Amazon - Understanding Visitor Profile And Perceptions Of Crowding, Lidiane Castro Gregory
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this thesis was to define the visitor profile of the Brazilian Amazon Basin using data from two different locations: The Tapajos National Forest and Anavilhanas National Park. This study also investigated possible issues regarding crowding. Overall data as well as segmented data were used in the analysis.;The methodology consisted of on-site interviews with survey days spread across weekdays and weekends. A total of 2534 usable surveys were collected from October 2015 to May 2015. All the analysis was conducted on SPSS. Frequencies, valid percentages, and means were used to describe the sample. For comparative analyzes between the …
Impact Of Incident Cancer On Coronary Artery Disease-Related Concomitant Medication Adherence, Short-Term Health And Economic Outcomes Among Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries With Coronary Artery Diseas, Ishveen Kaur Chopra
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the most burdensome chronic conditions in the elderly. The two key goals of long-term management of CAD are (i) to reduce symptoms and ischemia and (ii) prevent myocardial infarction and death, by lowering lipids and blood pressure. Of all the risk reduction strategies, use and adherence to concomitant pharmacotherapy with statins and beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) have been shown to be highly effective and has become the cornerstone of CAD management. However, adherence to concomitant pharmacotherapy can be influenced by many factors including the development of …
Nonword Repetition Task To Evaluate Syllable Stress As A Motor Class, Emily R. Cobun
Nonword Repetition Task To Evaluate Syllable Stress As A Motor Class, Emily R. Cobun
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Current speech therapy methods and theories are based on generalized motor program (GMP) theory (Schmidt, 1975). GMP theory states a single GMP, or motor program, directs multiple movements of speech (Maas et al., 2008). Additionally, GMP theory asserts these similar muscle movements are part of the same motor class, which allows a GMP to direct performance on novel, untrained patterns of movements (i.e., what is termed "transfer performance"; Chamberlin & Magill, 1992; Schmidt, 1975). Alternatively, movements outside of a learned motor class will be more difficult to perform because a different GMP is controlling these movements. Currently, syllable stress patterns …
Pyschometric Evaluation Of The Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire For Musicians And The Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity And Interference Questionnaire For Musicians, Brian Matthew Schmidt
Pyschometric Evaluation Of The Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire For Musicians And The Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity And Interference Questionnaire For Musicians, Brian Matthew Schmidt
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
There is currently no standard method to measure the incidence and prevalence of musculoskeletal injury among musicians. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability for the Musculoskeletal Pain Questionnaire for Musicians (MPQM) and the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM) in collegiate musicians. Participants completed a packet containing the MPQM and MPIIQM, with two baseline instruments (SF-36 and QuickDASH). Convergent validity was evaluated using a correlation between the scores of the baseline instruments and the MPQM and MPIIQM. Reliability was evaluated using the split-half method and Cronbach’s alpha. The readability was evaluated …

Evaluation Of A Nutrition And Physical Activity-Based Curriculum On Children’S Lifestyle Choices, Alyssa Justine Carlson
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
This study assessed the effectiveness of the “On the Move to Better Health” program, specifically whether it promoted 4th to 6th grade North Dakota students, as well as their families, to make healthier lifestyle choices. “On the Move,” NDSU Extension Service’s five-lesson nutrition and physical activity-based public health intervention program, was taught in 211 elementary school classrooms throughout North Dakota. Both students and parents were given presurveys at the beginning of the program and postsurveys at the end. Students increased their fruit intake, vegetable intake, and amount of time spent being physically active over the course of the 5-week program. …
A Framework For Profiling Prospective Students In Higher Education, Santhosh Kumar Lakkaraju, Deb Tech, Shuyuan Deng
A Framework For Profiling Prospective Students In Higher Education, Santhosh Kumar Lakkaraju, Deb Tech, Shuyuan Deng
Research & Publications
Prospective student acquisition is a prominent issue in higher education marketing. Noel-Levitz (2012) estimated that higher education institutions are losing as high as 75% of the prospects after receiving an inquiry. Another study reported that 80% of the students who decide to apply to a program were influenced by the post-inquiry communications they had received from the higher education institutions (Aarinen, 2012). This chapter attempts to study the underlying concepts from literature and design a framework to extract prospective student profiles and further extend a discussion on how these profiles can be used to address the prospect engagement.

Factors Affecting Virtual Gift Acceptance: Mediating Roles Of Hedonic And Utilitarian Values, Eric M. Tamandja, Assion Lawson-Body, Laurence Lawson-Body, Jun Liu
Research & Publications
There is little formalized knowledge of virtual gifting in the information technology (IT) literature. The objective of this paper is to explore the factors affecting the acceptance of virtual gifts and specifically the factors within a virtual gift that affect individuals’ intention to accept it and the mediating role of these factors. This research combines several acceptances, hedonic and utilitarian view related theories to explore the factors affecting acceptance of virtual gifts. Moreover, this study investigates the effects of usefulness, beautifulness, subjective norms of the receiver, and importance of the giver of a virtual gift as determinants of its utilitarian …
Too Nice To Be Dominant: How Brand Warmth Impacts Perceptions Of Market Dominance, Jennifer L. Stoner, Carlos J. Torelli
Too Nice To Be Dominant: How Brand Warmth Impacts Perceptions Of Market Dominance, Jennifer L. Stoner, Carlos J. Torelli
AMTP Proceedings 2017
Consumers are unaware of brands’ market dominance. This is important given that even misperception as a market leader has been shown to lead to positive evaluations from consumers. We hypothesize that when consumers are lacking direct knowledge about a brand’s market dominance, brand image is used as a cue for inference making: specifically, a brand with a warm, kind, and generous image will be in conflict with perceptions of market dominance, which are perceived as an embodiment of power. Thus high warmth brands will be perceived as less market dominant than low warmth brands.
In study 1, we use real …
A Model To Predict Matriculation Of Concordia College Applicants, Kaylin Pavlik
A Model To Predict Matriculation Of Concordia College Applicants, Kaylin Pavlik
Statistics
Colleges and universities are under mounting pressure to meet enrollment goals in the face of declining college attendance. Insight into student-level probability of enrollment, as well as the identification of features relevant in student enrollment decisions, would assist in the allocation of marketing and recruitment resources and the development of future yield programs. A logistic regression model was fit to predict which applicants will ultimately matriculate (enroll) at Concordia College. Demographic, geodemographic and behavioral features were used to build a logistic regression model to assign probability of enrollment to each applicant. Behaviors indicating interest (campus visits, submitting a deposit) and …
Power Analysis To Determine The Importance Of Covariance Structure Choice In Mixed Model Repeated Measures Anova, Taylor J. King
Power Analysis To Determine The Importance Of Covariance Structure Choice In Mixed Model Repeated Measures Anova, Taylor J. King
Statistics
Repeated measures experiments involve multiple subjects with measurements taken on each subject over time. We used SAS to conduct a simulation study to see how different methods of analysis perform under various simulation parameters (e.g. sample size, autocorrelation, repeated measures). Our goals were to: compare the multivariate analysis of variance method using PROC GLM to the mixed model method using PROC MIXED in terms of power, determine how choosing the incorrect covariance structure for mixed model analysis affects power, and identify sample sizes needed to produce adequate power of 90 percent under different scenarios. The findings support using the mixed …

Background: Appendectomy is considered the gold standard treatment for acute appendicitis. Recently the need for surgery has been challenged in both adults and children. In children there is growing clinician, patient and parental interest in non-operative treatment of acute appendicitis with antibiotics as opposed to surgery. To date no multicentre randomised controlled trials that are appropriately powered to determine efficacy of non-operative treatment (antibiotics) for acute appendicitis in children compared with surgery (appendectomy) have been performed.
Methods: Multicentre, international, randomised controlled trial with a non-inferiority design. Children (age 5-16 years) with a clinical and/or radiological diagnosis of acute uncomplicated appendicitis …

Internet-delivered treatment has the potential to expand access to evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for pediatric headache, and has demonstrated efficacy in small trials for some youth with headache. We used a mixed methods approach to identify effective components of CBT for this population. In Study 1, component profile analysis identified common interventions delivered in published RCTs of effective CBT protocols for pediatric headache delivered face-to-face or via the Internet. We identified a core set of three treatment components that were common across face-to-face and Internet protocols: 1) headache education, 2) relaxation training, and 3) cognitive interventions. Biofeedback was identified as …

Being Native American In Business: Culture, Identity, And Authentic Leadership In Modern American Indian Enterprises, Daniel Daniel Stewart, Amy K. Verbos, Carolyn Birmingham, Stephanie L. Black, Joseph Gladstone
Management Faculty Publications (Archived)
Tribally-owned American Indian enterprises provide a unique cross-cultural setting for emerging Native American business leaders. This paper examines the manner in which American Indian leaders negotiate the boundaries between their indigenous organizations and the non-indigenous communities in which they do business. Through a series of qualitative interviews, we find that American Indian business leaders fall back on a strong sense of “self”, which allows them to maintain effective leadership across boundaries. This is highly consistent with theories of authentic leadership. Furthermore, we find that leaders define self through their collective identity, which is heavily influenced by tribal affiliation and tribal …

Do Pinnipeds Have Personality? Broad Dimensions And Contextual Consistency Of Behavior In Harbor Seals (Phoca Vitulina) And California Sea Lions (Zalophus Californianus), Amber J. De Vere, Malin K. Lilley, Lauren Highfill
Psychology Faculty Publications (Archived)
Personality has now been studied in species as diverse as chimpanzees and cuttlefish, but marine mammals remain vastly underrepresented in this area. A broad range of traits have been assessed only once in each of bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions, while consistent individual differences in a few specific behaviors have been identified in grey seals. Furthermore, the context component of definitions of personality is not often assessed, despite evidence that animals may show individual patterns of behavioral consistency across contexts. The current study therefore aimed to use behavioral coding to assess underlying personality factors and consistency across contexts in …

Utilizing Action Research To Improve Counseling Education Course Work For Culturally Diverse Students, Sabina De Vries, Deirdre Mcdonald, Mary Mayorga
Counseling and Guidance Faculty Publications (Archived)
This article informs counselor educators and psychologists on how to utilize action research to evaluate diverse students, course work, and to improve classroom instruction. A paucity exists in research investigating educational needs of diverse counseling students. The present action research study examined educational experiences of diverse counseling students enrolled in a research course. The sample consisted of 70% Hispanic/Latino students, and a little less than half were older adults; 80% of the participants were female. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected and analyzed. Findings, limitations, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Military-Related Ptsd And Working With Couples In Private Practice: Emotion-Focused Therapy, Psychoeducation, And Evolutionary Perspective, Sabina De Vries
Counseling and Guidance Faculty Publications (Archived)
The aim of this article is to provide information and treatment suggestions to mental health services providers who work with couples with trauma-related problems. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment dropout rates, evolutionary perspective of PTSD, emotion-focused therapy (EFT), emotionally focused couples therapy, and psychoeducational strategies are discussed. A hypothetical case example is provided to illustrate how psychoeducation and information pertaining to trauma responses and evolution can be integrated with emotion-focused therapy to work with traumatized persons/couples in a private practice setting.
Caretakers Of The Community's Past Volunteers In North Dakota Museums, Amber Lien
Caretakers Of The Community's Past Volunteers In North Dakota Museums, Amber Lien
History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies
The bulk of museum studies research focuses on professionalized museums. Little research has been conducted on the challenges of small museums. This study looks at volunteers in small North Dakota museums. Sparsely populated North Dakota lacks the funds and manpower to professionally staff their rural museums. While it is especially difficult for museums to recruit younger volunteers because they tend to be more mobile and have constricted schedules, North Dakota’s small museums have adapted by staffing with older volunteers. Museums in Southwest North Dakota such as the Hettinger County Historical Society, Dakota Buttes Museum, and Mott Gallery of History and …
American Thought, Culture, And Neo-Noir In The Era Of Postmodernity, Thomas Quist
American Thought, Culture, And Neo-Noir In The Era Of Postmodernity, Thomas Quist
History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies
The rise of postmodernism, following the fall of modernism after WWII, brought about new modes of thinking, understanding, and living in America. Postmodernity is often neglected or glanced over by historians. Those who mention it do it either in passing or use it as a pejorative, yet it has had huge effects and ramifications on American culture during the second half of the 20th century. By exploring the thought, culture, and film of a postmodern America a deeper connection between history and postmodernism is formed. The transitions from noir to neo-noir films (which mirrors the transition from modernity to postmodernity) …
Host Communities’ Perceptions Of Refugees In North Dakota And Perceived Impacts Of Refugees On North Dakota Communities, Kurukulasuriya Mary Tania Fernando Arseculeratne
Host Communities’ Perceptions Of Refugees In North Dakota And Perceived Impacts Of Refugees On North Dakota Communities, Kurukulasuriya Mary Tania Fernando Arseculeratne
Sociology and Anthropology
This study identifies host communities’ perceptions of refugees and perceived impacts of refugees on North Dakota communities by analyzing a 2015 petition against future refugee resettlement using Braun and Clarke’s guide to thematic analysis. I identify two host community perceptions of refugees: refugees as “other,” and refugees as a potential threat to the security of individuals, the community, and the nation. I also identify three perceived impacts of refugees: privation of American citizens, and the beliefs that refugees exert pressure on public services, and refugees are ruining the American way of life. Using Intergroup Threat Theory to interpret the perceptions …
Emplacing New Economy Businesses In Small Metropolitan Areas: Examination Of Role Of Place Constructs, Mitchell Bryant Calkins
Emplacing New Economy Businesses In Small Metropolitan Areas: Examination Of Role Of Place Constructs, Mitchell Bryant Calkins
Sociology and Anthropology
It is often argued that only large metropolitan areas possess the preconditions for the origination of successful technology companies. However, smaller cities across the country have been successful in developing vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystems, thus contravening that observation. This case study presents one such city in order to further expand the conceptual understanding of what characteristics contribute to a thriving entrepreneurial scene. Previous research has identified multiple qualities related to culture, networks, and institutions as being important. It is argued that the attachment entrepreneurs develop with a location, as well as the location’s identity upon their business, are variables that might …
Transitions Of Care In The Veteran Population And The Effects Of Patient Education On Patient Outcomes: A Systematic Literature Review, Tuula Elina Kallioniemi
Transitions Of Care In The Veteran Population And The Effects Of Patient Education On Patient Outcomes: A Systematic Literature Review, Tuula Elina Kallioniemi
Nursing
The main focus of this systematic literature review was to assess research on care transitions in the veteran population as well as the effects of patient education interventions. A variety of care transition interventions were discovered in the literature. The majority of the interventions described in the research were based upon earlier research by Coleman, Parry, Chalmers and Min - The Care Transitions Intervention (2006), and Naylor and Keating - Transitional Care Model (2008). The large variety in patient populations, heterogeneity of interventions, and lack of protocols hinders direct comparisons between the care transition interventions. Apparent assessment methods for patient …
Screening For Bipolar Disorder In The Primary Care Setting Using The Mood Disorder Questionnaire, Julian David Good
Screening For Bipolar Disorder In The Primary Care Setting Using The Mood Disorder Questionnaire, Julian David Good
Nursing
The majority of patients who have mental health needs are seen by their primary care provider (PCP) for treatment. In 2014, an estimated 6.6% of adults in the United States met diagnostic criteria for a major depressive episode during the past year. However, not all patients who present to their healthcare provider with symptoms of depression have a major depressive disorder. Some of these patients may have bipolar disorder, which in addition to symptoms of depression, include symptoms of mania or hypomania. This practice improvement project aimed to improve PCPs’ confidence in treating patients with depression and identifying patients with …

The Relationship Between Appearance Comparisons And Disordered Eating Behaviors: A Proposed Model And A Test Of An Intervention, Allison Minnich
The Relationship Between Appearance Comparisons And Disordered Eating Behaviors: A Proposed Model And A Test Of An Intervention, Allison Minnich
Psychology
One sociocultural factor that has been implicated as a risk factor in the development of eating disorders is a tendency to compare one’s appearance to others’ (appearance-related comparisons). The aims of the current study were to propose a detailed model of the relationship between appearance comparisons and disordered eating behaviors based on a review of previous literature and to experimentally test an intervention generated from this model. Previous research reports inconsistent findings regarding the potential differential impact of comparisons to universalistic (i.e., distant sources of influences) and particularistic (i.e., close sources of influence) targets. The intervention aimed to alter appearance …
Awakening The Social Self: Nostalgia Regulates Loneliness By Energizing Approach-Related Social Motivation, Andrew Allen Abeyta
Awakening The Social Self: Nostalgia Regulates Loneliness By Energizing Approach-Related Social Motivation, Andrew Allen Abeyta
Psychology
Chronic loneliness is predictive of poor health. Therefore, it is vital to identify psychological resources that combat loneliness and encourage social connection. However, loneliness is difficult to overcome, in part because it is associated with a maladaptive high avoidance and low approach motivation orientation that limits a person’s ability to connect with others. I hypothesized that nostalgia, a positive emotional experience that involves reflecting on cherished memories that are typically social in nature, is a psychological resource that regulates the tendency for lonely people to be less oriented toward social approach goals and motivation. I tested this hypothesis across 3 …
Applying The Situational Judgment Test Method To Assess Individual Differences In Health Competence, Michelle Ruth Persich
Applying The Situational Judgment Test Method To Assess Individual Differences In Health Competence, Michelle Ruth Persich
Psychology
People regularly make decisions about their health, yet they clearly differ in their ability to successfully make healthy decisions. We sought to understand this important individual difference by developing a scenario-based measure of health competence (HC) modeled from the Situation Judgment Test (SJT) method. People were required to judge certain responses to health-related scenarios in terms of how healthy the response was and the likelihood that they would enact the response. In study 1, we showed that those with high HC scores tended to participate in less risky health behaviors and more protective health behaviors. In study 2, we used …

Are You A Good Partner? Using The Situation Judgment Test Method To Identify And Measure Romantic Competence, Ian B. Penzel
Psychology
We devised a measure seeking to assess competency within romantic relationships using a scenario-based paradigm that was informed by the situation judgment test (SJT) and emotional intelligence literatures. Pilot data revealed positive correlations between romantic competence (RC) and romantic relationship outcomes such as satisfaction and self-efficacy within romantic relationships. To further research of this type, we conducted a study examining daily romantic behaviors, feelings, and motivations, while also collecting partner and peer reports. Results revealed that RC was a significant predictor of romantic success as quantified by self-perceptions and peer reports, and some of these relationships remain significant when controlling …
Dual Effects Model Of Social Control: Extending The Model To 24-Hour Health Behavior, Michael P. Mead
Dual Effects Model Of Social Control: Extending The Model To 24-Hour Health Behavior, Michael P. Mead
Psychology
The Dual Effects Model of Social Control suggests that partners can positively and negatively influence the health behaviors of their partner. However, the model fails to consider the impact of control on non-targeted health behaviors, such as sleep. The current study sought to expand this model by including sleep continuity and duration as outcomes related to control efforts targeting diet and exercise. Partner control and objective sleep data were collected via daily sleep diaries and Fitbit Charge HR. Regression models were used to test the direct and indirect effects of control on sleep duration and continuity and the extent to …
