Community participation in building climate change resilient rural housing: a case of the Jamuna river basin of BangladeshAbstractThe climate resilient cluster village was established by an NGO named “ActionAid Bangladesh”. The study was undertaken to ensure safe community living for the inhabitants of a vulnerable ecological zone of Bangladesh.. The experience was that local people had their houses destroyed by flood almost every year with far-reaching threat to livelihood and solemnity of women. It was therefore felt essential to facilitate the community in building multi-hazard resilient houses so as to make themselves self-protective from climatic hazards like windy storm, theft …

High Fructose Corn Syrup Induces Metabolic Dysregulation And Altered Dopamine Signaling In The Absence Of Obesity, Allison M. Meyers, Devry Mourra, Jeff A. Beeler Dec 2017

High Fructose Corn Syrup Induces Metabolic Dysregulation And Altered Dopamine Signaling In The Absence Of Obesity, Allison M. Meyers, Devry Mourra, Jeff A. Beeler

Publications and Research

The contribution of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to metabolic disorder and obesity, independent of high fat, energy-rich diets, is controversial. While high-fat diets are widely accepted as a rodent model of diet-induced obesity (DIO) and metabolic disorder, the value of HFCS alone as a rodent model of DIO is unclear. Impaired dopamine function is associated with obesity and high fat diet, but the effect of HFCS on the dopamine system has not been investigated. The objective of this study was to test the effect of HFCS on weight gain, glucose regulation, and evoked dopamine release using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry. …

Dental caries affect 87.4% of Filipinos while 48.3% have periodontal disease. In most developing low-income countries like the Philippines, more than 90% of caries is untreated. Because of the evident disparities in health, high cost of healthcare, unaffordable and unavailable health service, there was a call for reorientation towards prevention on a mass scale by the World Health Organization. This pushed for oral health promotion in schools. Schools give an ideal setting for introducing preventive measures for health with the objective of developing sustainable health promoting behavior change and long-term health outcome improvements. The dental interns from the University of …

Improving Wayfinding And Signage Systems Of The Ragunan Zoo As A Way To Enhance Visitors’ Quality Time, Yulia Nurliani Lukito, Enira Arvanda

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

Ragunan zoo is the biggest zoo in Jakarta that becomes one of the most favorite recreation areas during holidays. Unfortunately, the existing signage in the zoo does not provide simple wayfinding and good signage systems that resulted in the confusion of visitors in exploring the zoo. Beside recreation, zoo also functions as, educational and conservational areas. Confusing wayfinding and signage make visitors have less time to enjoy the exhibits and reduce visitors’ motivation to fulfill the education and conservation goals. This paper analyzes existing wayfinding and signage systems at the Ragunan Zoo and proposes a more comprehensive system by using …

Recent studies have found an association between functional variants in TREM2 and PLD3 and Alzheimer's disease (AD), but their effect on cognitive function is unknown. We examined the effect of these variants on cognitive function in 1449 participants from the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention, a longitudinal study of initially asymptomatic adults, aged 36–73 years at baseline, enriched for a parental history of AD. A comprehensive cognitive test battery was performed at up to 5 visits. A factor analysis resulted in 6 cognitive factors that were standardized into z scores (∼N [0, 1]); the mean of these z scores was …

“Listen To What Your Jotería Is Saying”: Coverage Of The 2016 Orlando Shooting By English- And Spanish-Language Media, Julian A. Bugarín Quezada

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

This study will focus on coverage of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting by multiple English- and Spanish-language media sources in the month following the attack. The study assesses the extent through which following the shooting, coverage of the event often ignored the victims’ and survivors’ queerness, Latinidad, or both. Did these actions diminish the intersectional experiences of queer Latinx people? Were stories of the victims and survivors of the shooting accurately represented? How did this event shape queerness, gender identity, and Latinidad in the year after the attack? Through the frameworks of Latino critical race theory and queer theory, this …

Sympathetic Symbols, Social Movements, And School Desegregation, Marisela Martinez-Cola Dec 2017

Sympathetic Symbols, Social Movements, And School Desegregation, Marisela Martinez-Cola

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

An important theoretical contribution to the study of social movements involving legal mobilization is framing theory. Framing encourages an analysis of the parties involved and the tools used to make meaning of their cause. A scholarly gap emerges, however, when considering the race, gender, and class of the litigants and the social challenges they face. In this article, the author blends framing theory with controlling‐images theory to provide a conceptual tool of ‘the sympathetic symbol’ to analyse the effects of race, gender, and class. Next, the author introduces the legal and social histories of two school desegregation cases involving Chinese‐American …

Parenting And Youth Adjustment Across Deployment, Allison E. Flittner O'Grady, Shawn D. Whiteman, Jean-François Cardin, Shelley M. Macdermid Wadsworth

Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications

This study examined how changes in at‐home parents' mental health and parenting practices related to changes in their children's adjustment throughout the course of a service members' military deployment. Participants included at‐home parents from 114 National Guard families who were interviewed at four different occasions across the deployment cycle. The results revealed changes across the deployment cycle among the following three indicators: parental warmth, depressive symptoms, and children's externalizing behaviors. Changes in parental warmth were associated with changes in children's adjustment. Overall, these findings indicate that during parental separation, at‐home parents' responses to children have important implications for children's adjustment.

Monosexual And Nonmonosexual Women In Same-Sex Couples’ Relationship Quality During The First Five Years Of Parenthood, Abbie E. Goldberg, Randi L. Garcia, Melissa H. Manley Dec 2017

Monosexual And Nonmonosexual Women In Same-Sex Couples’ Relationship Quality During The First Five Years Of Parenthood, Abbie E. Goldberg, Randi L. Garcia, Melissa H. Manley

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Research on relationship quality in same-sex couples has rarely focused on (1) couples who are parents, or (2) couples in which partners differ in sexual identity. Insomuch as nonmonosexual women (i.e., women with non-exclusive sexual orientations) experience unique challenges due to monosexism, relationship quality may be influenced by whether partners share a monosexual or nonmonosexual identity. The current study is a longitudinal, dyadic analysis of 118 female parents within 63 same-sex couples whose relationship quality (relationship maintenance, conflict, love, ambivalence) was assessed at five time points across the first 5 years of adoptive parenthood. Monosexual women were those who identified …

Psychological Conditions That Promote Job Engagement: Test Of A Model, Zhuo Chen Dec 2017

Psychological Conditions That Promote Job Engagement: Test Of A Model, Zhuo Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

According to Kahn’s theoretical model (1990), the following three psychological conditions - meaningfulness, safety, and availability - are the key proximal predictors of job engagement. The current study examined the effects of these three psychological conditions (meaningfulness, safety, and availability) on three aspects of job engagement (JE), using both cross-sectional and daily diary data to examine between-person and within-person relationships among these variables. Psychological conditions were also examined as mediators of relationships between organizational and personal factors and job engagement. Furthermore, positive affect (PA) was tested as a moderator of the relationships between distal predictors and the three psychological conditions. …

A Longitudinal Growth Mixture Model Of Child Disclosure To Parents Across Adolescence, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Daye Son, Larry J. Nelson

Faculty Publications

The present study used in a person-centered approach to examine heterogeneity in children's patterns of routine disclosure (i.e., sharing information regarding their whereabouts and activities to parents) across adolescence and explored predictors and outcomes of different trajectories. Participants included 500 adolescents (51% female, 67% White, 33% single-parent families) who completed questionnaires every year from age 12 to age 18. Growth mixture modeling suggested that the majority of adolescents (82%) reported low and stable disclosure, and a third party (5%) a steep decrease and leveling out over time. Group membership varied as a function of predictors at age 12 (delinquency, prosocial …

The Downward Spiral: Postmodern Consciousness As Buddhist Metaphysics In The Dark Souls Video Game Series, Paolo Xavier Machado Menuez Dec 2017

The Downward Spiral: Postmodern Consciousness As Buddhist Metaphysics In The Dark Souls Video Game Series, Paolo Xavier Machado Menuez

Dissertations and Theses

This paper is about locating the meaning of a series of games known as the Dark Souls series in relation to contemporary social conditions in Japan. I argue that the game should be thought of as an emblem of the current cultural zeitgeist, in a similar way one might identify something like Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums as an emblem of the counter cultural 60s. I argue that the Dark Souls series expresses in allegorical form an anxiety about living in a time where the meaning of our everyday actions and even society itself has become significantly destabilized. It does …

Così Fan Tutte: A Better Approach Than The Right To Be Forgotten, Martha Garcia-Murillo, Ian Macinnes Dec 2017

Così Fan Tutte: A Better Approach Than The Right To Be Forgotten, Martha Garcia-Murillo, Ian Macinnes

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

In this article, we argue in favor of a macro-societal approach to protect people from the potential harms of personal information online. In the tension between information and privacy, “the right to be forgotten” is not an appropriate solution. Such a micro, individual-based answer puts the burden of protection on each person instead of on external entities that can abuse such knowledge. The personal responsibility to delete personal data is challenging because of the leakage of data that happens through the connections we have with others, many of whom do not share the same privacy preferences. We show that effective …

A Post-American World? Assessing The Cognitive And Attitudinal Impacts Of Challenges To American Exceptionalism, Jason A. Gilmore, Charles Rowling Dec 2017

A Post-American World? Assessing The Cognitive And Attitudinal Impacts Of Challenges To American Exceptionalism, Jason A. Gilmore, Charles Rowling

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

A number of voices have emerged in U.S. political discourse questioning the legitimacy of American exceptionalism, suggesting we are in a “post-American world.” Our research examines the effects that political messages that explicitly challenge American exceptionalism can have on U.S. public opinion. Drawing upon social identity theory, we find that explicit challenges to American exceptionalism significantly impact Americans’ views toward their own nation, their willingness to denigrate foreign publics, and their broader foreign policy preferences.

Home-Based Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (Prep) Services For Gay And Bisexual Men: An Opportunity To Address Barriers To Prep Uptake And Persistence, Steven A. John, H Jonathon Rendina, Christina Grov, Jeffrey T. Parsons

Publications and Research

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic. Despite the promise of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in reducing HIV transmission risk, barriers for uptake and persistence exist. We sought to identify whether GBM in a nationwide cohort who have not yet initiated PrEP (n = 906) would prefer to get PrEP-related care from a primary care provider (PCP) compared to a specialist clinic or provider. We then sought to identify their level of interest and factors associated with preference for using home-based PrEP services (i.e., HB-PrEP), defined to participants as conducting …

Agency Theory And Corporate Governance In China: A Meta-Analysis, Canan C. Mutlu, Marc Van Essen, Mike W. Peng, Sabrina F. Saleh

Faculty Articles

Do agency theory-based “good corporate governance” principles indeed apply to China? A straightforward answer to this question is lacking, because evidence is inconclusive across studies. We endeavor to fill this gap by conducting the first meta-analysis on the China literature with two focuses. First, we assess the impact of (i) board independence, (ii) board leadership structure, and (iii) managerial incentives on firm performance, as these elements have been central to both agency theory as well as to Chinese corporate governance reforms. Second, we extend current theorizing by showing support for the temporal hypothesis, which states that over time, with the …

Neurofeedback With Fmri: A Critical Systematic Review, Robert T. Thibault, Amanda Macpherson, Michael Lifshitz, Raquel R. Roth, Amir Raz

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Neurofeedback relying on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI-nf) heralds new prospects for self-regulating brain and behavior. Here we provide the first comprehensive review of the fMRI-nf literature and the first systematic database of fMRI-nf findings. We synthesize information from 99 fMRI-nf experiments—the bulk of currently available data. The vast majority of fMRI-nf findings suggest that self-regulation of specific brain signatures seems viable; however, replication of concomitant behavioral outcomes remains sparse. To disentangle placebo influences and establish the specific effects of neurofeedback, we highlight the need for double-blind placebo-controlled studies alongside rigorous and standardized statistical analyses. Before fMRI-nf can join the …
