The Impact Of Undergraduate Research Participation On Research Self-Efficacy, Tracy N. Baker
The Impact Of Undergraduate Research Participation On Research Self-Efficacy, Tracy N. Baker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Current literature confirms that self-efficacy, academic self-concept, and participation in undergraduate research influence the academic performance and aspirations of students. However, a gap in the literature remains as research has yet to explore whether students who have participated in research have a higher sense of research self-efficacy and academic self-concept than students who have not participated in these activities. In addition, it is unknown whether undergraduate researchers pursuing STEM degrees differ from students pursuing non-STEM degrees, nor if they vary by gender. The purpose of this study was to investigate the research self-efficacy and academic self-concept of undergraduate researchers, compare …
The Lived Experience Of Breastfeeding For Women With Perinatal Depression, Beth A. Pratt
The Lived Experience Of Breastfeeding For Women With Perinatal Depression, Beth A. Pratt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Exclusive breastfeeding for at least 6 months provides numerous infant and maternal benefits. Yet mothers with risk factors, such as lower education, lower socioeconomic status, younger maternal age, planned cesarean birth, and anxiety and depression, are more likely to stop breastfeeding in the early postpartum period. Few studies have focused on perinatal depression as a risk factor for breastfeeding cessation. To tailor effective interventions, nurses must first understand the lived experience of breastfeeding for mothers at risk for perinatal depression. A descriptive phenomenological study was conducted to elucidate the experience of breastfeeding for mothers with perinatal depression. The study was …
The Relationship Between Sense Of Belonging And Instructor Self-Efficacy Among Online Adjunct Faculty In Higher Education, Jillian Wojcik
The Relationship Between Sense Of Belonging And Instructor Self-Efficacy Among Online Adjunct Faculty In Higher Education, Jillian Wojcik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Given the increased reliance on adjunct faculty and the increased demand for online courses, the online adjunct faculty member is an important figure to know and understand. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of research on this population, particularly in terms of how their feelings of connection to their colleagues, administration, and their institution affects their beliefs about their online teaching abilities. This non-experimental correlational study investigated the relationship between sense of belonging and instructor self-efficacy among online adjunct faculty in higher education. Additionally, this study sought to determine if there is a predictive element between these two variables. This study …
The Relationships Among Sleep Quality, Fraility, And Falls In Older Adults Residing In The Community, Jacqueline Staal
The Relationships Among Sleep Quality, Fraility, And Falls In Older Adults Residing In The Community, Jacqueline Staal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
One in three American older adults fall every year, making falls the leading cause of nonfatal injury treated in the emergency department (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013). Fall-related injuries cost the United States healthcare system nearly $30 billion a year and result in 27,000 deaths per year (Burns, Stevens, & Lee, 2016). The risk of falls increases with age, occurring more often in women than man. Age-related muscle weakness and functional decline contribute to fall risk. Age-related changes in neuroendocrine hormone production and shifts in circadian rhythms promote sleep disorders, affecting nearly two-thirds of older adults. Poor …
The Relationship Between Mcgregor’S Leadership Theory And Happiness Among Higher Educational Leaders, Jeannette S. Sullivan
The Relationship Between Mcgregor’S Leadership Theory And Happiness Among Higher Educational Leaders, Jeannette S. Sullivan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this research was to determine if a relationship exists between McGregor’s Leadership Theory and subjective states of well-being among higher educational leaders in state and community colleges in Florida. The underlying supposition was that the preference for what Douglas McGregor called Theory X or Theory Y assumptions, indicate intrinsic assumptions about human nature and are linked to subjective happiness. Quantitative data were collected through electronic administration of two surveys and demographic questions to higher educational leaders at 28 state and community colleges in the State of Florida. These instruments measured levels of well-being through the PERMA-Profiler instrument …
Unrecognized Pasts And Unforeseen Futures: Architecture And Postcolonialism In William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! And The Sound And The Fury, Danielle Haugk
Unrecognized Pasts And Unforeseen Futures: Architecture And Postcolonialism In William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! And The Sound And The Fury, Danielle Haugk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis examines the genesis, maintenance, and failure of rigid and exclusionary societal models present in William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County. Yi- Fu Tuan's analysis of the concepts space and place serves as the foundational theoretical framework by which human spatiality may be interpreted. Combining Tuan's observations and architectural analysis with Edouard Glissant's concepts of atavistic and composite societal models allows for a much broader consideration of various political ideologies present in the South. Following this, it becomes necessary to apply a postcolonial lens to areas of Faulkner's literature to examine how these societal models are upheld and the effects they …
The Wicked Decision Maker: A Collective Case Study Of Senior Student Affairs Officers Responding To At-Risk Student Retention, Aarika C. Camp
The Wicked Decision Maker: A Collective Case Study Of Senior Student Affairs Officers Responding To At-Risk Student Retention, Aarika C. Camp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this collective case study was to discover the decision-making processes used by senior student affairs officers when making wicked decisions related to the retention of specialized, at-risk student populations. Wicked decisions are complex, resistant to resolutions, lead to other problems, and are essentially unique. In this study, decisions related to retention of Black males; students with mental health issues; and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer student retention fall within the wicked problem category and were the focus of this study. These decisions are usually the responsibility of divisions of student affairs in higher education settings and …
Time Orientation And The Ability To Envision The Distant Future Of Higher Education In A Community College, Gisela M. Diaz
Time Orientation And The Ability To Envision The Distant Future Of Higher Education In A Community College, Gisela M. Diaz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Although temporal issues affecting organizations and leaders have been researched, time orientation (preference for one or more of the present, past, and future time frames) and visioning ability of change agents within organizations remain open for additional investigation. This exploratory survey study compared self-reported time orientation (TO) and visioning ability ratings of administrators and faculty at a community college. The research added to the extant literature by contextualizing the measures of the key constructs and extending the research to a novel setting. Scores for all three time frames were assessed in contrast to studies that emphasize future orientation. In addition, …
Utilizing A Game Theoretical Approach To Prevent Collusion And Incentivize Cooperation In Cybersecurity Contexts, Arash Golchubian
Utilizing A Game Theoretical Approach To Prevent Collusion And Incentivize Cooperation In Cybersecurity Contexts, Arash Golchubian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In this research, a new reputation-based model is utilized to disincentivize collusion of defenders and attackers in Software Defined Networks (SDN), and also, to disincentivize dishonest mining strategies in Blockchain. In the context of SDN, the model uses the reputation values assigned to each entity to disincentivize collusion with an attacker. Our analysis shows that not-colluding actions become Nash Equilibrium using the reputationbased model within a repeated game setting. In the context of Blockchain and mining, we illustrate that by using the same socio-rational model, miners not only are incentivized to conduct honest mining but also disincentivized to commit to …
Water And Soil Salinity Mapping For Southern Everglades Using Remote Sensing Techniques And In Situ Observations, Fahad Khan Khadim
Water And Soil Salinity Mapping For Southern Everglades Using Remote Sensing Techniques And In Situ Observations, Fahad Khan Khadim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Everglades National Park is a hydro-ecologically significant wetland experiencing salinity ingress over the years. This motivated our study to map water salinity using a spatially weighted optimization model (SWOM); and soil salinity using land cover classes and EC thresholds. SWOM was calibrated and validated at 3-km grids with actual salinity for 1998–2001, and yielded acceptable R2 (0.89-0.92) and RMSE (1.73-1.92 ppt). Afterwards, seasonal water salinity mapping for 1996–97, 2004–05, and 2016 was carried out. For soil salinity mapping, supervised land cover classification was firstly carried out for 1996, 2000, 2006, 2010 and 2015; with the first four providing average accuracies …

Finally, participants were able to demonstrate these skills once the intervention was removed …
Tracing A Technological God: A Psychoanalytic Study Of Google And The Global Ramifications Of Its Media Proliferation, Benton Fazzolari
Tracing A Technological God: A Psychoanalytic Study Of Google And The Global Ramifications Of Its Media Proliferation, Benton Fazzolari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation makes the connection between the human drive, as described by psychoanalysis, to construct God and the construction of the technological entity, Google. Google constitutes the extension of the early Christian period God to the twenty-first century. From the examination of significant religious and theological texts by significant theologians (Augustine, Thomas, Luther, Calvin, etc.) that explain the nature of God, the analogous relationship of God to Google will open a psychoanalytic discourse that answers questions on the current state of human mediation with the world. Freud and, more significantly, Lacan’s work connects the human creation of God, ex nihilio, …
Use Of Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) In A Study On Beach Morphodynamics At Red Reef Beach, Boca Raton, Florida, Dos Santos Porto Sabrina Camara
Use Of Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) In A Study On Beach Morphodynamics At Red Reef Beach, Boca Raton, Florida, Dos Santos Porto Sabrina Camara
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The internal architecture of a beach system can provide clues into the processes involved in its formation, including depositional processes, and/or driving mechanisms (Billy et al., 2014). Several unique events such as cold fronts or Hurricane Irma caused conditions that resulted in erosion and accretion changes in Red Reef Beach - Boca Raton, throughout the year of 2017. Since the lateral extent of these changes is difficult to evaluate using traditional methods such as coring, a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was tested, which allows for a good lateral resolution (cm scale), to image the distribution and evolution of these sediments. …
Valuing The Invaluable: Piquant Georgia Low-Country Marsh Ecosystem Services, Alyssa A. Wood
Valuing The Invaluable: Piquant Georgia Low-Country Marsh Ecosystem Services, Alyssa A. Wood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Coastal ecosystems, such as the salt marsh of the Georgia coast, have long been valued for decision-making purposes based on market-values of goods and services including: fishery landings, hedonic pricing of waterfront homes, and tourism dollars. These values do not show the full picture of services provided by these ecosystems. Using focus group discussions and key informant interviews I investigate socio-cultural values and benefits provided by salt marsh ecosystems in central coastal Georgia. Participants noted that through their experiences in marshes they developed a desire to be stewards. This desire, coupled with the industrial pollution, residential development, and sea-level rise …
Working In The Biz: Material And Identity Processes Of Bartending, Jacqueline Me Frazer
Working In The Biz: Material And Identity Processes Of Bartending, Jacqueline Me Frazer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Bartending makes for an interesting case study in that it brings together research on emotional labor and tipped front-line service jobs, as well as the contemporary increase in precarity in work and precarity in life. This project explores the material and identity processes of bartending, examining how a precarious job with high expectations of emotional labor in-turn affects the occupational and personal identities of those employed in the industry. Overall three overarching themes were identified: (1) When wages are outsourced to customers via tipping systems workers are exposed to particularly high emotional demands, rendering bartending a unique form of quid …
Wave Ship Interaction In Transforming Seas, Fuxian Gong
Wave Ship Interaction In Transforming Seas, Fuxian Gong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In near-shore transforming seas, as waves approach the shoreline, wave shoaling and sometimes wave breaking take place due to the decreasing water depth. When a ship advances through the transforming seas, the ship body and waves interact with each other substantially and can lead to unknown motions of the ship hull. The physical process of how the wave transforms in the surf zone and how the vehicle actually behaves when it passes through the transforming seas is a complicated issue that triggers considerable research interest. The goal of my research is to characterize the dynamics of a high-speed surface ship …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Most diurnal birds are presumed visually sensitive to near ultraviolet (UV)wavelengths, however, controlled behavioral studies investigating UV sensitivity remain few. Although woodpeckers are important as primary cavity excavators and nuisance animals, published work on their visual systems is limited. We developed a novel foraging-based behavioral assay designed to test UV sensitivity in the Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus). We acclimated 21 wild-caught woodpeckers to foraging for frozen mealworms within 1.2 m sections of peeled cedar (Thuja spp.) poles. We then tested the functional significance of UV cues by placing frozen mealworms behind UV-reflective covers, UV-absorptive covers, or decayed red …

Worldwide, native predators are killed to protect livestock, an action that can undermine wildlife conservation efforts and create conflicts among stakeholders. An ongoing example is occurring in the western United States, where wolves (Canis lupus) were eradicated by the 1930s but are again present in parts of their historic range. While livestock losses to wolves represent a small fraction of overall livestock mortality, the response to these depredations has resulted in widespread conflicts including significant efforts at lethal wolf control to reduce impacts on livestock producers, especially those with large-scale grazing operations on public lands. A variety of …

Keynote and plenary speakers at professional conferences serve as highly visible role models for early-career scientists and provide recognition of scientific excellence. This recognition may be particularly important for women, who are underrepresented in senior positions in the biological sciences. To evaluate whether conferences fulfill this potential, we examined distinguished speakers at North American ecology conferences between 2000 and 2015 and compared these data with the percentage of women ecologists at diverse career stages. We found that 15%–35% (x = 28%, n = 809) of the distinguished speakers were women, which is significantly lower than the percentage of female ecology …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
With the development of a toxic bait (HOGGONE®) for the control of invasive wild pig (IWP; Sus scrofa) populations in the United States, there is a need to develop a bait station to mitigate potential effects on nontarget species. Our objective was to identify characteristics of a bait station that can successfully exclude raccoons (Procyon lotor)—a ubiquitous and dexterous nontarget species—while facilitating bait consumption by IWPs that exhibit group-feeding behaviors. We evaluated abilities of captive raccoons (n = 19) and IWPs (n = 41) to open the lids of prototype resistance assessment bait stations (RABS) …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Wildlife contraceptives are an emerging tool for minimizing human-wildlife conflicts. One promising avian contraceptive compound, 20,25-diazacholesterol (DAC), reduces fertility by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis. A reliable analytical method for DAC was required in support of its registration for use as a reproductive control agent in pest bird species. A liquid chromatographic method employing tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) was developed for the analysis of tissue extracts following solid phase extraction clean-up. Tissues analyzed were whole body samples from crows, monk parakeets, and quails and liver samples from crows and quails. Excellent sensitivity and selectivity was afforded by tandem mass spectrometry. The method …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Assessing the health and condition of animals in their natural environment can be problematic. Many physiological metrics, including immunity, are highly influenced by specific context and recent events to which researchers may be unaware. Thus, using a multifaceted physiological approach and a context-specific analysis encompassing multiple time scales can be highly informative. Ecoimmunological tools in particular can provide important indications to the health of animals in the wild.We collected blood and hair samples from free-ranging polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in the southern Beaufort Sea and examined the influence of sex, age, and reproductive status on metrics of immunity, …
Seasonal Effects Of Wind Conditions On Migration Patterns Of Soaring American White Pelican, Javier Gutierrez Illan, Guiming Wang, Fred L. Cunningham, D. Tommy King
Seasonal Effects Of Wind Conditions On Migration Patterns Of Soaring American White Pelican, Javier Gutierrez Illan, Guiming Wang, Fred L. Cunningham, D. Tommy King
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Energy and time expenditures are determinants of bird migration strategies. Soaring birds have developed migration strategies to minimize these costs, optimizing the use of all the available resources to facilitate their displacement. We analyzed the effects of different wind factors (tailwind, turbulence, vertical updrafts) on the migratory flying strategies adopted by 24 satellite-tracked American white pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) throughout spring and autumn in North America. We hypothesize that different wind conditions encountered along migration routes between spring and autumn induce pelicans to adopt different flying strategies and use of these wind resources. Using quantile regression and fine-scale atmospheric …
Chickens And Eggs: Does Custody Move Support, Or Vise-Versa?, Margaret F. Brinig
Chickens And Eggs: Does Custody Move Support, Or Vise-Versa?, Margaret F. Brinig
Journal Articles
Most, if not all, of the theoretical work on child support presupposes that it becomes an issue only when couples separate, that is, that the flow moves between custody and child support and that the duty to make monetary payments is typically owed by the noncustodial parent. (I realize, of course, that there can be issues regarding the identity of the payor and that there are criminal and civil actions possible when parents refuse or neglect to provide support to dependent children.) Some empirical work confirms the relationship between the two. For example, Judith Seltzer, Weiss and Willis, and Brinig …

Intellectual property law sorts subject matter into a variety of different regimes, each with different terms of protection and different rules of protectability, infringement, and defenses. For that sorting to be effective, IP needs principles to distinguish the subject matter of each system. This paper focuses on one of the most important aspects of border-drawing that our IP system undertakes — identifying “useful” subject matter.
This aspect is critical because our IP system gives utility patent law pride of place and draws the boundaries of the other doctrines in large part to respect utility patent’s supremacy. Yet IP law’s sense …
